I have submitted close to 1k books that hit 9.8 with none going higher. As you point out, I am pretty sure the reality is that a lot of books are simply never checked to see if they reach the standard of 9.9 or 10.0. The simplest reason for this in my mind is that they plop the most inexperienced graders in the modern 9.8 pre-screen and modern book categories and they are told that a 9.8 is free of ticks, bends, etc. Massive $$$ orders from dealers may be dealt with by more experienced graders, and that is likely where the 9.9s and 10.0s are falling.
I think I speak for most collectors in stating we consider a 9.8 grade being a perfect book since CGC has been holding back 9.9 and 10.0 grades for years. 9.9 and 10.0 grades are like unicorns and not really sought out by the majority of the market. When CGC started including the 9.8 sticker with submissions I felt it was their of saying this is as high as we're gonna go.
I'm feeling the same way, give the 9.9s and 10s to 2024 books and forward. I did a video last year on the top 20 comics with the most 9.8s and zero 9.9s, Ultimate Fallout 4 was on that list. I followed up a couple of weeks ago and still zero 9.9s, I will be keeping track.
I think CGC jumped the shark! It seems that my 9.8 CGC slabs are going to be devalued now by what CGC is going to do. I feel like they should have just stuck with the grading formula as it was. Though it did seem imperfect, at least it was consistently imperfect.
You provide excellent valid points with a reasonable alternative solution. Unfortunately CGC will ignore problems or solutions as long as it does not hurt the profits. Once they start significantly adding 9.9 and 10.0 to the census an example to new mutants 98 and Ultimate fallout 4. It will dramatically invalidate the cgc grading system with regards to 9.8
This is a very bad situation CGC has created. The only way this would be fair is what you said about this only applying to 2023 and newer books. CGC needs to worry more about redesigning their holder so that you cant break into them with a hair dryer! This is a blatant cash grab that will do nothing but harm the individual collectors collection of 9.8 books. This is the final straw, I will be switching to CBCS.
It’s an easy fix, as collectors we should simply not buy any 9.9 or 10’s graded books. At the end of the day, it’s always a supply vs demand. If there’s no demand for a 9.9 or 10 it has no value.
I had been submitting heavily for 2 years now. I have personally gotten two 9.9s and they were both brand new skottie youngs. Transformers 1 and Xmen 141. It is possible for the normal everyday person to get them.
At the end of the day, people have way too much $ invested in CGC graded books, and for that reason, CGC will always have a monopoly over the grading industry. The only solution is to boycott, but that will never happen 🤦🏻♂️
This whole situation with cgc is becoming a bit fubar. Since getting back into comics, I really liked the idea of and the looks of slabbed books, but I can't say I care for what I've been seeing from them since then. I think I'm going to start thinking of graded books similarly to how I see nfts. Maybe that's extreme, but ultimately, the thing that holds the value to me is the book itself and only the book. Now, I'm not going to go and start cracking slabs just to say I freed another book, but I honestly think we as collectors need to reassess how we value these things. I think the way many currently view them is a bit warped.
I'll be making one final submission to CGC just to get the "free"150 dollars of submission that is included in my membership. After that, I'm done with these morons. CBCS?
I have submitted a super crispy super sharp no spine tick no colour breaking 90's x-men book many times and it still came back 9.8 and never 9.9 or 10. CGC is a joke and i'm glad is stop using cgc 4 or 5 years ago. If i ever need a 9.8 cgc book I'll just buy it at ebay, lcs or at events. I will never give my money to cgc anymore.
LOVE your work but CGC will never see a penny from me as of current. I will buy slabs but i won't send any of my books in as i don't see the value plus my son and i read it all. I know facsimiles and replicas exist but nothing ever beats the tactile feel and smell of old newsprint. IMHO feels more of a monies grab with all the reholder and other scams going on i will buy raw and only had a problem with trimming 1x. Plus we only collect Platinum to some Copper age books. No modern books for us :-)

Couldn't. Agree. More. Thanks for the great analysis!
My pleasure!
Following! Interested to see what will actually change.

Glad I am not the only one
I before E (except after C) or when sounding like A, as in neighbor or weigh.

I have gotten 4 9.9s in the last few months. All newer books though. 2 of them magazines and 2 of them newer foil covers.
Yeah the new foil covers can be 9.9 as they are thicker and have tighter production specs. Those don’t bug me.

Oh and also never buy that power rangers book even in a 9.8. Let who ever submitted that sit there will there stack and invoice

Well - see the comments - lots of folks are. This one is a self inflicted wound imo.
@@TopComicsPressing I sure hope so. I would probably start collecting again with CGC on the decline. Best of luck to you! 👍🏻

In five years, CGC will add 9.91-9.99.
Hahahaha yup
