I think the subtext though is, it's advice he heard, but it's not something he personally believes.
When he buys the rifle from the black market gun seller, he references sadly his experience in Vietnam, that and other clues to his personality seems to strongly suggest that Mike carries EVERYTHING with him, even years and decades later, especially his son, who he was fully prepared to die for avenging.
@@georgetazberik6834 exactly!! I think Mike is basically saying "keep going and keep trucking on" and that someday you don't think about it as much but that stuff doesn't just go away. This show deals heavily with fatalism and we know that later both Jimmy and mike go further down bad choice road. Instead of forgetting about it, I think you're right. In the future they both carry all of it and makes them become who we see them be in breaking bad

I think that Mike didn't let the wounds heal over time naturally, but instead he forced himself to feel nothing. That's the only way he knew how to deal with the tragedies in his life. That's why being a hitman comes easy to him. He has nothing to loose in regards to his mental state, since he already turned off his emotions.

I love so much that the writers didn't just forget about Fred like his life was meaningless. Jimmy showed genuine remorse and he wasn't even involved in Fred's death, however looking back and seeing Fred's family at the bail hearing sobbing in tears broke him.

This really is the only thing that helped me when I had to move on. Interestingly, it's not really an advice or a trick. He just says to live your life and do your thing, and just let the pain dry out on its own. This was more real than any other advice or tips for me.

I never asked - Why me? Why not me? What makes me so special? It happened and I had a choice: move on or crumble.
I have found what speeds up the process is if you do something so out of character that your mind has to focus on 110 percent.
It could be anything like going skydiving even though you are afraid of flying or getting a bikini wax when you are shy or prone to pain or get a colonic.
When you finish the task you will notice your mind has kind of skipped the needle on the record and you are no longer as in a groove mentally.
I call it shock therapy.

The part where he says "bcs was originally going to be a comedy but vince and Pete didn't know how to write comedies so they made it a drama like breaking bad" still sends chills down my spine

Everybody needs a Mike in their lives. The voice of reason, minus the bs. Even if Mike doesn't follow his own advice to you, he'll tell you what you need to hear, at least.
A lot of people dont like the brutal honesty however.
Mike is a hypocrite though. The advice he gave Jimmy is the one he got from counseling. He rejected it and refused to confront his own grief. That's why he's back working for Gus.
Reminds me of my grandpa. Every time we had lunch, he’d drop some wisdom that I didn’t want to hear but really needed. Listen to the Mike in your life, he won’t be around forever.

@@paulbeen459 Indeed, he is. But in his wisdom of knowing that what they were telling him was right, even if Mike himself didn't want to listen, he shared that information with Jimmy to help him out because he knew the advice was right.
I noticed Jimmy misquoted Mike's "bad choice road" speech, but recited the "You can forget" to Kim perfectly.
The second the worst botch job of relaying advice ^^ totally felt like "and one day you wake up and your conscience won't finally bother you any more".
Probably because moving on was something Jimmy was used to doing by that point, and then the bad choice road speech was perhaps butchered because Jimmy couldn't sell the idea of the choices he made either. He was never truly happy with them or felt he could reasonably justify them.
But he also completely missed the point of Mike's advice when relaying it to Kim. Mike's advice was to accept the pain as there will come a time when you can stop thinking about it. Jimmy was in denial regarding Howard's death and trying to convince Kim to be in denial as well and just carry on like everything was normal.
Mike's so sympathetic that he almost makes you forget what a terrible man he is.

That's a really good point. He's definitely not 'good' or 'moral' in the traditional sense but you really do root for him. Perhaps it's because his aspiration is in some ways a more genuine version of Walt's in BB (which was "to look after his family", but Walt's iiknitial desire becomes more about his ego and failed legacy).

3:49 I think most people would either be offended or annoyed but Mike actually looks pretty understanding there. He knows Jimmy can’t see a therapist or talk to anyone else about what happened or he would be in jail or that person would be in danger, and Mike admits that emotions aren’t his strong suit. That maybe he had a similar situation during his time in the military or police force or when he lost his son or Werner.
Trivia: Jimmy stopped cracking jokes once Mike died🥲.

Such a brilliant scene. On one hand this could be viewed as probably Jimmy's last chance to change the path he was on. He was clearly disillusioned, & questioning a lot of his decisions, after that traumatic trip to the desert. But Mike's speech made it clear that Jimmy was already on the "road." He couldn't just walk away from Lalo. And it all goes back to the very first episodes of BCS when Jimmy hooked up with those two skaters to try & con the Kettlemans. Had Jimmy not done that, he never would have met Tuco & Nacho, & Lalo never would have heard about Jimmy. What do we see in the background of this scene? Skaters.

Genuinely love that Jimmy drops his entire persona because of how damaged he is (including the time machine flashback) and it’s the one time Mike fully embraces him as an actual person with respect.
He even embraced Daniel Warmold and didn't make fun of him or anything when telling him he was a criminal.

This is a big detail a lot of people miss. Mike’s daughter in law said this exact same thing at the meeting with the church about his son and her husband dying. She just forgot about him and didn’t think about him for a day and she realized she had finally gotten over it/moved on to her new reality. And here he’s giving his own daughter advise to Saul. Amazing writing
Even better of course that Mike took Jimmy's insult on the chin thereafter, because it's almost exactly how he felt after Stacy had told Mike that. Mike realised he too could move on, and that Jimmy would, too.

I don't think Mike felt insulted by that. I think this is the one moment where Mike really understood and sympathized with Jimmy.
In a sense of course part of the irony is Mike knows there is no one you really can talk about/talk out this kind of crime.

Can someone tell me the context of this conversation? What happened that shock jimmy
I beLIEVE (someone correct me if I'm wrong), the context is largely Jimmy's PTSD from his prior traumatic experiences in the desert, as well as his anger over the death of Fred. This all put him in a state of personal/moral crisis. Because his involvement with the very forces that created these circumstances has left a stain on his soul (to get rather poetic about it), he is now carrying a pretty unbearable burden.

I think his bad choice road actually started the moment he stole from his dad
Jimmy in this scene still angry at Fred’s death.
Meanwhile, Jimmy in Breaking Bad was comfortable in suggesting shanking Badger (who is younger than Fred), “sending Hank on a trip to Belize” and gave Jesse an “Old Yeller type situation”.
It’s sad that he became more evil and heartless over time.
It's like Mike said, mate. Eventually, you can forget. And by that point, that's what being able to forget does to Jimmy.

I almost don’t want to know what happens in Season 6 that pushes him to that level of heartlessness…. I assume it involves Howard and Kim
they're all "in the game" though, they put their lives at risk. Fred didn't.

After watching the series finale, you can compare this dialogue with the theme of the last chapter: remorse and redemption.
Mike says you can never walk out that path, and Chuck in a flashback shows his love telling Jimmy he can change if he wants to. Eventually Jimmy does change; chooses 86 years taking all the guilt he deserves and trying to do the right thing for once. It’s beautiful in fact. Mike never understood he could change, and that is his greatest flaw.
It reminds me of his scene with Nacho's father, where he tells him that "Justice" will be served, only for him to be remind that he's not better than the Salamancas, or Fring, or even Heisemberg, they're all criminals, gangsters, definitly bad people, having an innocent honest man twisting so much Mike's head and his "Criminals can be bad or good" it's like a message for him and for the audience who has being saying for over a decade that Mike is some sort of "Good criminal", when his just a man as dangerous and ruin as all the other ones

Mike's advice is very common but also probably the best advice for dealing with grief. Ive used this analogy myself with grief stricken or heart broken friends who seemingly needed help getting from one moment to the next.
It definitely goes hand in hand with the “Box and the button” analogy. The button that triggers grief doesn’t go away or hurt less, but the box it lives in gets wider and wider and wider with time

What's even better about this scene is that, even though Saul expressed his anger and left Mike at the end , it's stuck with him so much that he echoes it later towards Kim. Except this time, instead of Mike's "our actions have consequences and we live with what we get from them", Jimmy turns it into "there are only good or bad actions, and Kim's actions are bad and will have bad consequences"
I had a horrible experience about two months ago. Someone got killed outside my apartment, blood everywhere. Hit and run in broad daylight.
This piece of dialogue has helped me cope with the PTSD of it all. And last week on Thursday, I didn't think about it at all.

When I watched Breaking Bad I thought Saul was a snake, but I could see a twinge of compassion underneath. This show really humanized him for me. He dug a lot of his holes himself, but he had a conscience. In the end, I guess he had to abandon that conscience in order to survive, and that's the man we saw in Breaking Bad.

The “here’s what’s gonna happen” is clearly a favourite line of the writers. Jimmy uses it to Chuck whilst waiting to be arrested.
Pretty sure Nacho and Chuck use it too I’ll have to get the specifics on my next rewatch!
No wishy washy “I think this will happen” or “this might happen”. The confidence with which these predictions are made makes them so much more powerful. Amazing writing and tv shows.

If someone ever ask me how to briefly define the Gilliganverse, I will show this speech of Mike. Because BB and BCS are not about drugs, crime, law, family or romance, among other recurring themes in both shows. They are, in essence, about choices. Every single character is free to make their choices, but no one is free of facing, for the rest of their lives, the consequences of the choices that they made.
To reduce it down to a single sentence, Mike is saying: “you’ve made your choices and they come with the consequences… accept the choices you’ve made and get through it.”
I'm just now realizing that Mike got the advice about forgetting from Stacey, since she said that happened to her regarding Matty's death. God I love this show
Mike got it from Stacey, the French toast version. Then gave it to Jimmy. Who then gave it to Kim about Howard.
Subtle but world class writing
The thing I love about mikes character is he’s all about self accountability and ends it off with a “do you understand” he knows Saul is scared and hurting and he empathizes with Saul but at the end he understands “ we are adults this is the choice we made “
Jimmy putting on the space blanket in the desert must have been tough. You can see the pain and bad memories of Chuck in Jimmy’s eyes when Mike asks him if he wants a space blanket. Also looking at Mike wrapped up in the space blanket gave Jimmy some harsh reminders of Him and Chuck’s history.
It's kinda iconic actually. Most people don't realize that but i think Jimmy had an understanding of that aswell in the actual scene.

That dialogue about choices basically summarizes Mike’s and Saul’s stories over the years. The show describes how both of them slowly entered the criminal world step by step.
Story of my life unfortunately
This actually got me over trauma I was having, yes the pain won't go away completely but the most painful part will and you'll smile again one day.

When I lost my two boys, they were the first thing i would think of when waking up, the last thing I would think of when I tried to sleep, and the middle was just a long reply session of their lives. I would still say goodnight to them like they were still here. After having them in my life for so long, just all of a sudden for them to be gone, it's impossible to adjust in any timeframe. I do remember the first morning when I realized I didn't say goodnight to them the night before and I felt so horrible. It's not moving on, it's being able to deal with the pain. I refuse to move on and I make it a point to say their name once a day to remind me what I lost, to remember the pain. To me, forgetting and moving on is like having them die again.

Do you think they would want you to live in constant pain? It hurts, I know, and it should. It's really important for you to grief and feel that sadness, but only to be able to overcome it eventually. You'll do it at your own pace, you'll make it there.
At 4:05 I love the call back to the Lindholm twins.
The whole scene Mike is telling Jimmy about the choices you make and how they lead you to places in life. Jimmy made the choice to use the Lindholm twins with their skateboard/hit by car scam to help him with Kettleman's. However, they instead accidentally scam Tuco's abuelita which then allows Jimmy to get involved with the Salamanca's. Which then slowly allowed Jimmy to get more and more involved with the Cartel which brought him to where he is now. Like Mike said about making small choices which make you go down the road you're on. That "small" choice that Jimmy made in season 1 has led him to the road he's on now.

Brilliant comment, I thought the same. Yes, the mistake by the twins brought Jimmy in contact with Tuco first, and later with Lalo - remember, *the guy for this*

It’s sad to think that Jimmy and Mike were quite close in this show, almost like buddies, then Mike got too deep into Gus’ business that he threatened Jimmy then Walter just killed Mike and Jimmy had to keep talking to Walter because he’s afraid that Walter will kill him.

@@Merces-Letifer That, is most definitely on purpose. Notice the colors in the scene/shots and the show in general; pretty much everything that composes the frames is intentionally done.
The writers and actors really cared about the characters. It wasn’t all about money like every other show but it was more about the art of telling a good story and having faith the success would follow because of it.

Mike reminds me of my dad. In appearance, voice, demeanor, and stoicism.
His first deployment was a few weeks before the fall of Saigon. Only talked about the details during the holidays after a boatload of bourbon.
War is inherently hell, but he was thrown on to the losing team near the end of the war, with virtually no experience or understanding of the situation. His only "trigger" was crying, oddly enough.
When my mom passed, it confused and enraged me that he never even shed a tear. But now ten years later, I know he was just calm and tough and accepting of the situation.
I'd cut off a toe to have one more conversation with the man. And to let him meet his grandchildren . . . I would cut off a whole leg.

Im actually glad that Fred's death is treated like it mattered, if that makes sense. So many other tv shows and movies just gloss over the fact that a villain killed an innocent person or that innocent people died as collateral damage, but this show humanizes him, shows characters in pain over the death of an innocent person, reminds the viewer that this happened and has repercussions.
Mike is a hell of a character. I pray nothing happens to him.

Could be a callback to what put Jimmy on the path he is because it was working with the two skateboard guys that introduced him to the Salamancas.

I watched BCS before Breaking Bad and it was interesting seeing the difference in Mike's characterisation. Mike in BCS seems like he hates being a criminal whereas Mike in BB seems like he has 'moved on' and learned to enjoy it.
Most real thing on a tv show ever.

My best friend killed himself on december 2nd 2019. I thought about it every single day for over two years. I just realized after watching this on a whim that I didnt think about it today, or the last few days here and there. Pretty solid advice. You just have to keep living.

Yes, while I realize (at this point), Jimmy sees Mike as the face of death, Mike did open up and talk through it with him and I did not care for the ingratitude Jimmy showed at the end of the scene.
Mike is that old person everyone needs to talk at times, when life squeezes you like a snake
Anybody who has ever experienced and got over a traumatic situation knows how true that is
I forgot how much Jimmy got through during that episode. I thought he was acting weird in the first 3 episodes of season 6... not hisself at all, then I saw this clip and it really make sense now, he is still in shock.
When Jimmy gets out of Mike's car following Mike's speech to Jimmy about how even the smallest decisions you make in life lead you down a road you can't escape from, you can see two skateboarders in the background of the scene. This was a throwback to the start of season one when Jimmy was running a scam with the two skateboarders that led him to Tuco and eventually led him to becoming a "friend of the cartel".
This scene is the last real honest look at Jimmy before the transformation to Saul. He still has some sense of scruples.
Mike didn't pay the parking meter. Hes a hypocrite asking for tickets.
This advice has helped me out a lot with troubles in my life.
mikes character strikes me as the sort of guy you can talk to that won't bullshit you, and at the end of the whole conversation you feel just a little bit better about life
Mike was such a great character, he really added interest to the show.

This episode, and the one before it getting out of the desert, were my favourites out of both BCS and BB. I can't explain why exactly, but I love them so much!

The cool little detail about this scene is falling skaters in the background in scene's end;
Literally a small choice that has put Jimmy on his road:
- decides to use skater brothers,
- meets Tuco,
- meets Lalo,
- ends up in a desert almost shot.
My dog passed away recently and he was too young to go. So hearing Mike's advice provided some clarity into what I am currently going through. It was also helpful hearing them talk about an innocent being like Fred, and how he didn't deserve to die, but his death is something that had to be moved past from. That was my interpretation of this amazing scene, thank you for listening.

The series tells us about the decisions we make, good or bad. And now, in the final season, we are going to see all the consequences that the characters will have to suffer for making those choices.
There's Mike offering some badly needed counseling, and Saul throws it back in his face. Mike probably drove off thinking "You've got one more person you can talk to about this stuff than I do."
