  • This is my review of the Cosmo Communicator: the portable Android laptop. amzn.to/3xWxh3K (Gemini PDA 4G LTE - Amazon Affiliate Link)
The Cosmo Communicator is a smartphone that doubles as an Android Laptop with a full QWERTY physical keyboard and running Android 9. The Cosmo Communicator is built from the ground up with one purpose in mind: productivity on the go. The Cosmo Communicator brings a very focused skill-set to the smartphone landscape and allows you to have a functionality of a pocket computer on the go for important business, work, school, and productivity tasks, but can also perform traditional smartphone tasks as well.

For some reason that device made me feel nostalgic. Clearly I owned a similar device at some point. So many uses I'd prefer to use the Cosmo rather than my phone. Keyboard has my attention. I think I'd be very interested in the next, improved model. Great video. Thanks!

I still have a review model - I still stick a SIM in it when I am travelling light but want to type a bit. It's genuinely great at what it does. But, I do wish the outer screen was more responsive, I feel I have to open it up most of the time to really use it.

I know this is a cosmo communicator video, but I know you have had experience with the gemini and I think you have looked at the Slide as well...
Heres my question, i bought a gemini wifi only to see if i even liked the layout and setup, since I missed that keyboard!
Im at the point where i am ALMOST sold, but that littttleeeee bit of sluggishness or lagginess on the gemini makes me hesitant there arent any significant performance improvements FROM the gemeni for it to be worth it, and I wanted to reach out and ask before finally giving up my iPhone, I really wish the Gemini *(with the customizable external lighting scheme which I really love above the little tiny screen on the outside, very much more cryptic, user specific feature that gives it a ton of character that its contemporaries have not managed to capture.... )
If the Gemini had a backlit keyboard, I would suck up the lagginess and sluggishness and just move on, but that backlit keyboard has got to be clutch...
    Anyway, my question:
If im loving the Gemini, but hate its sluggishness, IS THE PERFORMANCE UPGRADE WORTH IT to move to the Cosmo communicator or the astro slide...?
    I trust your opinion.
    thanks in advance!

Good review. So many reviews on TH-cam compare this to a smartphone which it is not. It runs a smartphone operating system. I have both Android and Debian installed on my Cosmo.
The handset is a nice take on mobile computing in the 21st century. It allows me to be productive on the go in some cases not requiring a laptop. For me that is great because my job can require me to use a customers laptop also which is locked down. Therefore, not having to carry an additional laptop in preference to the Cosmo or even the predecessor the Gemini is a real bonus.

@@vinnyfanneran3116 there are times when a portrait device is needed. The Astro Slide 5G would have been the best alternative. Unfortunately, Planet Computers have had production issues which is not good.

Do you still use it? What software version is it running?

    • @josephbenaiah3260
      @josephbenaiah3260 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@davidaikman1920 I still use it as the power button on the Gemini broke. Primarily, I run Android 9. I don't think that Planet Computers ever provided a new ROM image. As a Splunk Consultant, being able to ssh to my Linux server and load up the Splunk UI along with those favourite Microsoft tools.
I do have Debian on the second partition but Planet Computers never did much with it and it is more for show than a functional daily phone os. I don't expect Planet Computers to do so as Davide Guide, CTO, has moved on. As a smartphone only, the Cosmo and its predecessor the Gemini can never replace the traditional smartphone.
Very often, if I am out in a social setting where only one device is needed for everything, the Cosmo will stay at home in my desk. I often say that Planet Computers should have improved upon the design of the Gemini as CoDI is very battery hungry and I leave it switched off because I don't really use the Cosmo as a phone even though I can make phone calls from it. Making WhatsApp calls with it closed really doesn't work as the sound quality of the call is bad.
Whilst the Cosmo Communicator and Gemini PDA are a modern take on the palmtop computer, I wonder if the company should have come out of the stable with the Astro Side first of all. The production of that device and Covid along with the production issues with their ODM in China have left the company with a somewhat tarnished reputation. Such that those faithful backers are not willing to take a chance on their products.

In a way it looks like my old Psion 3c organiser I had years back. That was one brilliant device (at the time I was running my own 'Mobile PC Technician/Servicing/Bespoke PC build' company, and, I used it for ALL aspects, contacts, spreadsheets.. I miss that form of device...
Now, as I previously mentioned in another video of yours, I would love a new version of a Blackberry Torch 9810, possibly maybe (depending on how good this next OnwardMob BB device turns out to be) could be that one, and since seeing this Cosmo Communicator a year or two back, took big interest in this... However, as you said, issues a few, reliability - hmmm 🤔, polished? Not quite... Let's see how the CC2 is? Hopefully, just right... 🤔🙂😎

You can but it throws me off because they keyboard isn't like Android where he sentences start with capitalized letters and double hitting space bar creates a period and a new sentence. When handheld you have to type with your thumbs and hitting shift for punctuation isn't terrible but it doesn't hold the shift until you press the button. If you let off the key it's like a PC keyboard... Shift goes away until you press it again. This makes typing properly handheld difficult

Loving your videos and finding them very interesting and educational. I have an issue with my Cosmo Communicator Cover Display I thought you might be able to help with. Version 13 was fine but since I've tried doing the update to the latest version [which it shows I have] as V16, it tells me the flashing is done but even after having flashed with the DND and airplane mode on I can't get the outside screen operating again. The inside screen shows the cover display is operable when I go into the CoDi App, but even when I try 'Starting Cover Communication' from the inside menu, all I see on the outside is the CoDi image with the diagonal red and black line through it. Despite having V16 of cover display [supposedly operating] it still tells me there is an update available. I tap on the drop-down menu to update the outside cover screen it shows 'download successful' but when I go to 'upgrade now'' it shows download error Please try again later.
Can you assist or anyone following your YT channel? I've tried asking Planet and a FaceBook group but nothing seems to bring my cover screen back on. Android is Planet's latest - V25.
I'm getting the CoDi symbol image on the outside cover which would show if the cover display was turned off. So it appears that somehow the outside screen isn't communicating and showing the usual menus. Thanks for any assistance. Declan
