What Ever Happened To Star Fox Games?

  • Star Fox has been a Nintendo mainstay since the SNES was popular in the 1990's. This franchise follows Fox McCloud as the leader of the Star Fox team, a group of ragtag freedom fighters who pilot advanced starship fighters called arwings. The series also follows his allies such as Falco Lombardi, Slippy Toad, Peppy Hare and Krystal. The series also has several villains and anti-heroes who recurringly appear throughout, such as Pigma Dengar, Wolf O'Donnell and Andross. While not the first flight simulator or air combat game, Star Fox helped popularize the genre through it's arcade style and anthropomorphic charms. The Star Fox franchise sold millions of copies for Nintendo and is easily one of their most recognizable franchises. With that said, what ever happened to the Star Fox series? where did it go? #starfox #nintendo #gaming

@@DegenerateJay I heard reports that Nintendo is bringing Starfox back, but the question is when will that happen. The first reason reason Nintendo abandoned Starfox was not because of Krystal, it was because of fans being ungrateful about Adventures and Assault which it along with 64 were great games and still are. The second reason was Command. Hopefully, someone who still cares about Starfox will undo the damage called Command and stop making reboots of 64 (like Zero)! We don’t need that! We need a true sequel to assault that takes place in the middle of Command but instead of the bad endings, let’s just call it bad dreams the characters are having, we need Fox and Krystal’s relationship restored permanently. That bit they added about Krystal turning to Andross’s side despite torturing her in adventures and causing destruction to her home planet deserves to be erased and forgotten! Nintendo deliberately did that just to satisfy the haters!

Star Fox is by far my all time favorite Nintendo game series ever after my first time playing the 64 game I was hooked to it I wanted to see more of it and for Zero’s failure for the controls made me sad and worried for the series and then Starlink came and I loved how they added Star Fox to it it felt great was like they should rename it to be a Star Fox game if they took Starlink’s style of gameplay with a bit of the on rail and ground play I think it would work and adding some little things to make the game interesting like customization on ur Arwing character or anything like that it might work but idk I really hope that Star Fox makes an epic return and will be my all time favorite game.

Zero's control scheme was just horrid, which was another reason why it failed. It is sad because I think without it, along with it being on the Wii U, it would had done better. Also, Command was horrid. The story sucked and they went full on soap opera with a lot of characters acting wicked OOC.

It’s too bad that Nintendo killed Star Fox due to their own incompetence. They need to learn that you don’t need to reinvent the wheel every time. All you have to do is come up with a new story, refine the gameplay that works, and maybe add in a minor gimmick to see if it works.
I was a little bit disappointed that you guys didn’t talk about the Dinosaur Planet build that was leaked earlier this year. Although, then again the video was mostly about Star Fox, and that would have made it longer than it needed to be. The reason why they made the change was because Mini Munchkin (I can’t remember how his name is spelled, and he’s the reason this franchise is dead) thought that Sabre looked like Fox so he wanted them to change the game.
My biggest problem with Command was the atrocious story. The thing had multiple ending, and most of them were terrible. They also completely ruined Krystal’s character.
I really like the atmosphere of Adventures. Although, I will admit that it doesn’t fit very well with Star Fox. It should be judged as it’s own thing kind of like how Doom 3 was too different from the originally but is still really good as it’s own thing. One thing I find absolutely hilarious is how if Krystal and other female characters were real they’d most likely be disgusted by their “fans” and how they’ve been portrayed. It’s too bad that most people only see Krystal is furrybait, and not an actual character.
I think the biggest problem with Star Fox Zero was how the game had the worst controls in the series. I’m not going to go into detail because lots of other people already have, and I mostly agree with them. Take away the bad controls and the game is a mediocre remake of 64 which was a remake of 1. The reason for that is because they had originally planned on releasing episodic campaign/missions. Sadly the game flopped, and now we most likely won’t get a continuation. If it was on Switch the game would be a lot better.
The problem with having Zero be a prequel while simultaneously making a sequel to Command is that both games are in different universes. Now I know that Nintendo never officially came out and said there were different timelines. But, each reboot has it’s own continuity. You have 1 and 2. 64, Adventures, Assault (Assault is one of my favorites), and Command. And finally Zero/Guard.
I really hope that the original people who worked on Star Fox get a second chance where they can go all out. My ideal game would be like Assault. Luckily we have fan games like UndyingNephilim’s game, and this reimagining of Adventures. Let’s hope that Nintendo doesn’t stomp both of those. Nintendo really should just sell the rights so that somebody else can make a proper game that doesn’t have a bunch of weird gimmicks, and continues the story.
Interestingly I have both minis and Starlink. But I haven’t gotten around to playing them. I have a lot of games that I haven’t played yet because I will usually hyper fixate on one game until I 100% it.
Don’t take any of this as an insult. I really liked the video. I was just pointing out some of the minor issues. I will be sure to check out your other videos.

While that is true to an extent (the manbabies in the fandom refuse to acknowledge that Assault was the best game), there’s no escaping the fact that Nintendo screwed over the franchise by forcing them to add a new gimmick each game. Zero is a prime example of this where it’s bogged down by the absolute worst control scheme ever created, and was launched on the WiiU. If they were to put the game on Switch without those awful controls, and let Platinum Games episodically release content like originally intended would be a hit.

Some of the boss fights could use tweaks/reworks/upgrades if they ever do a remake for Adventures but otherwise fantastic game. My only main gripe with it was the plot bait-n-switch with General Scales and Andross.

I've got some amazing ideas for a new starfox game, and assault had the most potential in terms of story, gameplay and direction.

The dying struggle against the Aparoids and seeing them unite together. Fox and Wolf have a mutual understanding knowing if we don't work together, we will die. People said that Star Fox should be an only spaceflight rail- shooting game but people also forget that the Star Fox team is a group of mercenaries! I don't think the on-foot missions isn't a bad idea, the problem is the controls to help execute what they can really do but due to the limitations of the controls they can't never really do anything past those limitations and also any changes / last-minute takeaways due to the developers and their ideas. If they had all the good stuff from Star Fox 64, Adventures, Assault, and even Zero. Then make The Mercenaries on-foot missions being close to sin and punishment and/or potentially be Cutscenes only. Then the next Star Fox game could be the best one we could have in this entire series. Even a few things from StarLink could make it even better.

That was the whole gimmick for Zero, & many people just hated how it felt to control. Not saying everyone felt that way, but that seemed to be the general consensus, I also think people were put off by the way Zero rebooted the series lore & just went for a Star Fox 64 re-imagining for its story & aesthetic when 64 was already a re-imagining of OG Star Fox & 64 had a remake on 3DS. It just became played out by that point.

while the rest wasnt the best and it was yet another reboot of SF64, the real issue were the controls and how were forced in such a way nobody had a better option.
people at the time were tired of the Wii U gamepad and this game forced you to not only use motion for aiming but also two screens to look at two perspectives. this screen view issue would've worked nicely on 3ds, but on Wii U it was horrid to work with, so yeah, as crazy as it sounds, the controls were more than enough to be a dealbreaker.

I personally would love to see Star Fox return in the form of Star Fox Assault mixed with the necessary modern game enhancements, and have it be a sequel to Assault rather than Command, and at this point I think on foot is mandatory, it is now a core component of the series and should be respected as such. Honestly, Nintendo giving up on Star Fox is what made me give up on Nintendo, there loss I suppose.

You know something that isn't talked about is how much these games have had on foot gameplay. Going back to starfox 2 with the walker which is the closest to on foot at the time. Then 64 with the landmaster and actual on foot in the multiplayer. Adventures obviously being a zelda like game, assault being a mix of classic with 3rd person style, and zero with the walkers funny enough.
So really on foot gameplay was always there but I feel like Adventures unfortunately left a bad taste when it comes to on foot.
I am on the starfox side that says yeah keep on foot gameplay because it just adds variety to the gameplay and assault was the closest to handling it.

The problem with StarFox is the development of the games; The implementation of the gimmick is always the leading factor as to why the games fail, never the idea. The split fan-base was another factor, but small compared to the development and management of said games. It begun with the cancellation of 2 and from there on Nintendo just scavenged the corpse for mechanics and playstyles. The only two reasons why people were mixed on Assault was the lack of mechanics from prior games and the length of the game. This goes back to development where Immamura and the Namco team were waiting on the executives to find an agreement with Myiamoto and the game featuring online multiplayer.
I could go on, but in short, on-foot is not bad because 64 zealots have the pitch of an opera singer, but because Miyamoto and the others at Nintendo couldn't find stable ground where Sakurai did.

    • @kurokamina8429

Star Fox Zero should've been given a control overhaul and a second chance on Wii U. There were lesser games that got a second shot. That said, the series did peak at 64, though I also really like Assault (and found some enjoyment in Command). It's a shame the series has been dormant so long. Same with F-Zero, Punch-Out (which definitely should've had a sequel after the Wii release) and Wave Race. Nintendo sits on too many IP.

So, here's my experience & observations where Star Fox is concerned. As you said the sales started out good with the 1st couple entries & then started dwindling. I remember watching the E3 event where they revealed Star Fox Assault & I heard the audience boo! They booed! They booed it & it made me furious. I understood the dislike for Adventures, & so could understand the disappointment with the reveal for Assault but, there were good things about those games too. The fans back then were so caught up in the rage & disappointment that they forgot that. They forgot to enjoy the game for what it was.
This rage & disappointment from the fans didn't help Nintendo's sales either but, the true reason for the series disappearing for so long is because Nintendo, like the fans, didn't listen, didn't think objectively, & didn't learn. Each game that came out after Assault, I enjoyed for the most part but, when Zero came out it might as well have been the nail in the coffin.
Zero's focused gimmicks with the Game Pad is what sunk that game. Nintendo's refusal to learn, or listen, is what sunk that game, not the fans, or declining interest. Star Fox Zero looked beautiful, & there were other good things about Zero too but, the controls killed the game in a baaad way. Everyone said as much when Nintendo revealed that gimmick, & I unfortunately had to agree. Looking between 2 screens with accuracy being dependent on the Game Pad was a terrible idea for a game series that was already struggling. If they'd allowed the controls to be customized & remapped, or allowed the option to do away with the Game Pad gimmick alltogether, that might have made things better but, none of that was in Star Fox Zero. Unfortunately, for Star Fox, fans, myself included, were tired of the gimmicks being forced into Star Fox by the time Zero came out, & Nintendo never understood this & their sales suffered as a result.
I hope Nintendo reads this comment because, I genuinely love the series, & hate criticizing it. It hurts me to criticize it because Star Fox 64 was one of the 1st games I got when the N64 came out. I grew up with it.
I'm not saying the series can't change & that we need another Star Fox 64 remake, because that horse has been beaten to death. I'm just saying that Nintendo needs to focus much much less on gimmicks, & more on the characters, the story, the setting, refining the controls & decent level design.

Star Fox is a series that to me has enormous potential. The problem however is that each new dev they get to work on the game focuses on some new gimmick for each game, instead of expanding upon what already makes Star Fox a great gaming experience. It's one thing I'm actually pissed about how Nintendo has handled the Switch thus far. You have this portable console that sells like gangbusters, but they hardly try to reinvigorate some of their older franchises. Now would be the perfect time to experiment with a new Star Fox, F-Zero, Kid Icarus, or Earth bound. Instead we get this continually stream of mediocre Sports games. that get forgotten in a week.

That being said, it is frustrating when Miyamoto claims no one likes starfox when the problem is obvious that the game is subpar due to either control issues on a console that floundered or a game didn't make sense because it was literally a different IP with a story that had Star Fox shoved so violently into it that it needed to be housed in a abuse victim shelter.

Star Fox Zero is actually a reimagining or reboot. If Star Fox Zero were to be ported as a stop gap like Skyward Sword HD is for Breath of the Wild 2, than it would be fine. But if they're counting on this game to save the series as a tempole title to test interest for a future release, then they're supporting a lost cause. It might do somewhat better sales wise, It would be like porting Mario Tennis Ultra Smash or Mario Party 10. They might not be bad games in their own right but seen as steps back in too many ways. The point of Star Fox Zero was to to make the Wii U look legit, The games features were inter locked. Even if they did port it, what we end up with is a game that lacked the content and ambition of past entries in a cycle of remakes and reimaginings.

Donkey Kong?? In what world does Nintendo care about a game series that they haven't continued in about 10 years? The total sales of Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze Wii U (~2 million) & Switch (~3 million) still failed to match the sales of DKC Returns on the Wii alone (~10 million). Ever wonder why DK mysteriously disappeared after DKC TF? (Mario spin-offs like Mario Kart and Mario Party, notwithstanding)
If Donkey Kong weren't tied to Mario, that series would've ended up like Q*Bert today. It would've been long gone. Honestly, during its heyday, Rareware did more justice to DK than Nintendo ever did after the arcade game. Hell, the last DK games were both tied to a DK series created by Rareware. I'd have brought up something like Animal Crossing, for example.
With that said, DK's still better off than F-Zero and Earthbound. So, I guess that's something...

64- was this addictive masterpiece i could always return to.
adventures wasn't even really a star fox game (i did enjoy it's archwing sections tho)
assault was just forgetable and i really couldn't even bring myself to care.
2- was a pretty fun suprise. had a lot of fun with that one. (might have been in part the nostalgia i had for 1)
zero- was just sooooo bad. i got the game for free and still felt ripped off. the whole gameplay gimmick completly ruined it for me.
ii wouldn't might a new game, but even an amazing game wouldn't really help them.
not just because of lost fans and trust, but also because of it's nature. star fox is a really arcade-y series of games. these sort of games are simply no longer considered all that important. a new great gamew might do well at a 40$ price point, but lets be real here. nintendo would release it at full price and at that point you have to choose between it and all the other full price releases.

Nintendo should try to improve and expand the other franchises. Like Star Fox, F-Zero, Metroid, Kid Icarus, and the other series. I mean, when was the last time you heard about those games? Star Fox could be a golden opportunity for Nintendo to try something new instead of just giving them another game! Like how about giving them their very own show. I mean, there are tons of Sci-fi and anthropomorphization animals shows, comics, and movies over the years, so it is possible to create a Star Fox show. I was thinking of improving the character designs, personalities, giving them origins, character development as the story goes on, and rewriting the story like in Star Fox Adventures. I wouldn't make Krystal be a damsel in distress when she was trapped in a magic crystal until Fox saves her at the end of the game. I was thinking of making her the main character in the story. When she meets Fox for the first time, she doesn't like him at first. Because he's a stranger on her second home planet and tries to kill him because of misunderstanding, then they work things out and decide to work together to accomplish their goals while also getting to know each other more.

There's a lot you could do with it. A show, especially in anime form, seems like it would have a lot of potential. Also, if you think about it, I'm just surprised that they don't capitalize off those games more monetarily. I understand that they aren't the best selling things in the world, but there is a pretty dedicated flight simulator and flight fighter simulator gaming community and there's always more people who are interested in that. It might sound a bit silly, but a lot of people, especially young men in particular, have a very big passion for airplanes, trains, or cars, and those don't really go away they just change over time. I'm surprised that especially when you have series of games like Ace combat that don't actually release that often that Nintendo doesn't try to compete with them in their own way.

But no, they abandoned them along with other characters from other franchises over the years. Are they so afraid of criticism because they have no idea how to write a story? Have they ever considered trying something new instead of making more Mario, Legend of Zelda, Pokemon, Animal Crossing, Splatoon, Smash Bros games, toys, and Pokemon anime? Why not give the other Nintendo characters a chance of having their very own show or maybe new comics? I mean, Sega does it all the time with their characters! So why can't it be the same for the other guys? Honestly, a couple of Star Fox fans can do a much better job than the people who created the game. Star Fox has always been about NIntendo's gimmicks, unfortunately. Zero proves unequivocally, that Nintendo's stance has not budged on that a single micron. Zero will never be released on the Switch because of its control/dual screen gimmick. It ruined it for me, and I started with the OG, played every game, and fell in love with the series at first sight.
Never cared for the Zelda franchise, but I loved Adventures. But Miyamoto shoving SF characters into Dinosaur Planet was more detrimental to Star Fox as an image and marketing identity and has not done the franchise any favors of fan retention, despite those of us who loved the franchise.
Assault was great, I thought. Multiplayer was enough to keep it in regular rotation with my siblings and I on the gamecube. But it wasn't perfect, and I guess a lot of people didn't like it.
Zero was the final nail. They put that game on the Wii U for a very important reason. To kill the franchise. What better burial than on a system that was doomed to die?
Would absolutely love to see a Mass Effect--esque iteration of the series, but that's nutty levels of production cost that will NEVER EVER be funneled into something like this franchise.
Enjoy what's there, kids. It was a hell of a ride.

Something that you guys didn't really talk about if not at all are effect of star fox's genre swapping and a new Comer coming across these games.
While yes there is slow decline but it did bring people in. You can see in online on youtube, the comment section that these games after 64 did bring to fans in such as myself. And that is the largely over looked because yes you are getting new fans but now complicating the situation. You've got multiple camps in the starfox community such as those that want it to go in an adventure route or Assault route or the real time strategy of 2 and command. Because of this the fan base can never agree or universally like a new star fox game.
Star Fox zero didn't just fail because it was on the wii u but because it basically said F you to the people who were invested by the storyline by going back to square one. It was also an F you to the people who liked those who wanted the series to evolve from a gameplay front by going back to 64 style in 2016. But it was also a middle finger to the people who wanted classic starfox by throwing in a gimmick that has a massive learning curve that you can't turn off and mostly no one asked for.
So the real problem is finding a way to make a new starfox game that can please mostly everyone. Knowing how things have been going however sadly not.

To be fair the forced romance in adventure didnt do much for the series. If anything with assult. It really pushed the Fox x Wolf an Nintendo didnt help much when the story beats and sleight changes really felt like Fox x Wolf would happen. Considering Nintendo teased Fox x Wolf so hard its a actual congratulations screen in super smash bros ultimate.
If Miyamoto got of his high horse and let the devs do there thing and stopped forcing gimmicks. The series would be better off without them. Starfox assult feels like Starfox meets Halo an I honestly like that. The mis of air and land combat is fast paced where its a best of both worlds. An Im sorry but purest Starfox fans need to let go of all starfox games need to be a on rails flight sim. Its because, of those types of fans the series has only did starfox 1 remakes / retellings to play it safe ,

Also Starfox was in starlink an starlink sold moddestly on switch because of the starfox brand. Starlink plays like starfox but with a higher budget. An if people like me can play starfox 0 on a single screen laptop. With just a gyro conroller with Cemu . Nintendo has no valid reason not to port starfox 0. When, they port every wiiu Mario game under the sun to the switch. An for the last 5 years the switch origionals has been nothing but ports and remakes. So if Nintendo continues down the train of ignoring fans. The only way to play starfox sadly is through piracy and Nintendo is braindead when it comes to legacy content -.-

Star Fox Zero badly needs to be ported to the Switch. I love Star Fox. Played it since day one in 1993. Nintendo is neglecting it badly. This is a gold star franchise and Nintendo is letting is wither away. I guess Nintendo doesn't like money.

Star Fox zero failed because of the ckntreols , they were absolutely horrendous and probably killed the franchise. I love star fox, I love adventures and assault but zero was absolutely awful.

@@dompne33 I recommend Rocket Knight Adventures: Re-sparked!, and Bot Vice there like Star Fox Assault in 2d.

I could be completely wrong, but I feel like star fox disappeared because it is a real shooter and you can’t get that many new ideas going in a real shooter. After all, the score, all you do is fly around and blast stuff in StarFox. How many new elements can you possibly add to make a new game? so after the first and start, Fox 64, there wasn’t really anywhere to go.
