- Want to convert your VHS tapes to digital files? It's an easy process that you can do on Mac or PC.
In order to transfer VHS tape to a computer, you'll need a few things.
You need a VCR. You can pick this up for a few bucks on eBay.
You'll also need a computer and a VHS tape.

Where’s the link to the software to download
One of the best converter videos I have seen so far. Explains thoroughly. I see a range of converters on eBay from $10 to $hundreds. Is there a trap with the cheaper ones? It is confusing because I can't find any real reason to spend the higher amount so far. I would prefer to keep the cost down because I only have a handful of VHS to do then it will go into the big box. Too expensive to have a shop do it.

The connector that came with your converter is called SCART connector.
SCART (also known as Péritel or Péritélévision, especially in France, 21-pin EuroSCART in marketing by Sharp in Asia, Euroconector in Spain,[1] EuroAV or EXT, or EIA Multiport in the United States, as an EIA interface) is a French-originated standard and associated 21-pin connector for connecting audio-visual (AV) equipment. The name SCART comes from Syndicat des Constructeurs d'Appareils Radiorécepteurs et Téléviseurs.

Question: if I purchase the converter does it come with it's own software that I load onto my PC? Another idea for you: as there are many converters on the market why did you choose this one? HAve you done a video on comparing other brands or can you give your opinion on others?
Bruce McCallum hey thank you. Yea it does some with the software included when I got it. I’m sure it will have a link to a download in the new ones. This is the one I’ve used for years, but it’s also the only one I’ve used. So I can’t give input. It was just the best rated in my research and I always found it to work well for my needs

Goodwill is a chain of stores in the US that sells all kinds of stuff donated to them by people. It's used stuff, so it's cheap.
I got a JVC VHS/DVD recorder and it has a HDMI output on it. 5 bucks.
Listen the tape is slowly rotting you have to transfer it asap!
I recently transfer my old 📼 tapes to 📀 at Costco last year and it works great as 📼 still have images in it.
They have a section for that ? Please tell me is it at every Costco I need to transfer my tapes

How about the screen/monitor or computer, does it has to be compatible with PAL system only?. Thank you.

I've learned to stay away from these cheap USB devices.. They always glitch and drops out frames.. USB ports aren't designed for high data transfer rate.. I've tried WinTV, Dazzel, Turtle Beach, all of them.. They never recorded the same quality you get out of the VCR... I bought a ClonerAlliance Pro box that records directly to Flash drive, no computer needed and it upscales the video to 1080p or 1280x720 at 60fps.. So much better than anything I've seen.. It's around $160 and it's worth every penny...

Can u use a component video + audio (5 wires) to hdmi on the other end of the cable instead of a usb with this software?
This is my setup. VCR connected through scart to a scart to hdmi converter. From this converter I connect hdmi in to a capture card. I have not seen anyone else do like I have done. So I have started to wonder if I should have used RCA instead? I have always though scart was better than RCA, But maybe Im wrong?

Hi - does it have to be the video capture USB converter or will any non proprietary converter work with the video capture software
Did you have any issues with audio drifting? I have captured VHS before, with different hardware, and always ended up with drift.
A lot of people will want to capture at higher quality such as uncompressed AVI files. I notice it automatically captured your video using MP4, and 3 meg for 15 seconds of video is very low (compressed quality), not ideal when VHS is always degraded quality. Where is the option to capture HQ and uncompressed, is there one? thanks

Yes in the video he shows you a scart converter. Plug into the scart output on the back of the vcr and then use the red white yellow leads

Hi Can you help me? I just got the same project, plugged everything in but the video doesn't display on the elgato software. I've tried plugging the RCA cords on the tv and can watch the videos with no problems but I just can't seem to see it on the video capture software on my mac. Am I doing something wrong?
i am trying to record my vhs tapes and i have a software to do it but the audio doesnt work on my computer but it does my vhs player on a tv. i have a hardrive thing that has red white yellow outputs to connect from the vhs to my computer and i cant get audio when i record them. any advice that would help?

I have a bunch of vhs tapes with so many memories of my family who I miss so much, videos of me when I was little, and of course my first digital animations I made as a kid...
For years I've been feeling HORRIBLE that I haven't taken the time to figure out how to transfer them to digital, but I honestly didn't know how or where to start or what the right way to go about doing it, and even MORE HORRIBLE about the thought of those tapes deteriorating the longer I waited

I do have Video TAPE recording on Pal and secam system But I have VHS (Video recorder) NTSC system .... Can I run the video tape (Pal or Secam) on NTSC VHS and do transfer to PC
it has to be line out on vrc, because that signal goes to your mac or pc.

You can use LUTs if you are using premier or davinci
VHS player is the trouble part of this. Finding a reliable working VHS player to stick an old tape in and risk the tape breaking and losing everything, is pretty common. You would think that some company would build a "player only" that has the playheads and the transport to digital output. Might be hard to find a good VHS deck these days.
It should always be connected to lineout on the the VCR coz the signal that's where it comes out from when you want to connect to the TV...
Line in was used for feeding in signal from camcorders to record blank tapes on the VCR..

I have a convertor from long ago which is made by Dazzle. Can I use the software you use that is free or third party without having to use software associated to Dazzle? Btw, you did not provide a link to the (elgato) web-site for the software download. Could you provide that please.

When converting there is a latency in signal from the vhs tape to the recording software. The first few seconds show a black screen without sound and is missing. How do you fix this? Also, green flashes sometimes appear in the saved video. How to get rid of this?

Great vid! Does this work for copy protected VHS? My son was in some commercials when he was very young and the old VHS tapes are copy protected. I haven't looked into it for more than a decade, but I'm thinking this might work. Appreciate the help.
I think this capture device still works for copy protected vhs. It’s not like you copy the vhs to another vhs.

no. You don't need the internet for it once you get the software

WHY!!!! does this NOT work with my S-VHS (super VHS) videos? All my work prior to going digital was created on this higher resolution tape. But there is NO signal when I hook up my S-VHS player to the simple hardware. Real bummer
This is good guys because the physical tape will take natural Damage it's best to get it in the digital format so it can't be destroyed and lost!

My VCR has white & yellow plugs in back "no red" will that still work? I have recorded a video using dazzle & it worked but I cannot get the audio to be loud enough. It recorded very low volume. Pinnacle is more complicated to use for newbys...im only interested in video transfer not editing. Any help would be appreciated.
That should still work. If it doesn't have a red output then that means the vcr produces a mono signal only. The yellow plug is the one with all the video information.
Does it work on Windows 10? I've bought other brands (4 different ones), which all advertised they supported windows 10 - then when I get it, the instructions said "it doesnt work with windows 10".

I heard it will; you might need to download a software update for it from Elgato's website, but it can be done.
