I watch Rebeca all the time. I bought 25 mini skeins of superwashed wool worsted weight at Yarn2dye4. We used food coloring(the paste kind Rebeca used by Wilton)and vinegar as my acid. A lot of fun. I have dyed seven skeins so far.
I separated my two skeins into 4 mini skeins. One is tonal purple, one orange with purple speckles, one with orange & purple speckles, and one with orange speckles.
I’m so glad you left the blue yarn tucked in skein form. That’s what I would have done, so now I know the outcome. This was fun to watch and inspiring.
Well... you know the outcome for what I did but you can use that info and modify your process to get different results! I think I'd like to leave it in there for several hours to allow the blue to soak inside further and deepen the color on the outside! Or maybe flipped it halfway through the soaking process to evenly dye the outsides! Have fun with it!
I never would have either and I'm so glad I did! I don't think I want to become a yarn dyer myself but it was certainly a fun project and I love how my yarn came out!
I love the way the blue turned out. I have been too chicken to try this but after watching you, I am inspired to go try it. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.
Hi Margaret. Oh, my, that orange and yellow Kool-Aid one is gorgeous! I love your new kitchen. I trust you're staying busy with all the new adventures your community has to offer. Stay well, dear friend, and stay cool as well.
Loved the wet dog comparison. My brother-in-law has alpacas and has offered me the wool for free. I am very tempted after watching your video. Thanks! I can't wait to see what you create with the yarn.
I’ve never smelled a wet sheep so wet dog is the closest thing I could come up with! I’ll be looking for projects but for now I’m just admiring the yarn cakes! I really surprised myself
I'm so glad to hear you say you enjoyed the knit crate box. I've heard so many ppl dissing them for this box but I am looking forward to dyeing my yarn from the crate!
So glad to see you! Especially doing a yarn dye!!! It turned out excellent. I love the colors. Be sure and share what you make with it. I can’t wait!!! Very great job!!!👍🏻
That really did look like fun, and not nearly as complicated as I had imagined. Both your skeins look gorgeous, and I look forward to seeing them knit up!
It was so exciting to watch you do this and see your results. I have been too chicken to try it myself but I may have to now. Can't wait to see what you create with your new colors!! Thanks Margaret!

That was fun to watch. I’m a great fan of Rebecca and enjoy her channel, thank you for showing us that a novice can dye yarn and make it look as easy as Rebecca does. I’m in Australia and we do not have cool aid here, although the normal food colouring seems good enough. Rebecca would put 2or3 table spoons of vinegar to the water. I’ve always wanted to dye yarn but felt a little intimidated after watching you I’m going to give it a go.🙏👏👏👏👍👍
Hey Margaret I would love to see ideas/tutorials for making blankets by crocheting or knitting. I'm making my first blanket (crocheted and granny striped pattern with caron big cakes) and I've heard it's about the right time to start making bigger blankets because they take quite some time (and I can certainly agree) and I would be very happy to see tips or advice on how to make a blanket. Love your channel btw keep up the great work!
Oh, goodness... I'm not the person to turn to for blankets! I've tried but I get SO BORED with big projects! I tend to stick with smaller things but I would like to dip my toes in corner-to-corner blankets at some point because I like the idea of using a graph to make a picture! When might I do that?? Hmmm.....
I also received this crate And mine came with orange and grape Kool-ade. I soaked my yarns and laid them out on cling wrap. My kids and I I sprinkled them both with the orange and grape wrapped them into the cling wrap and microwaved them. It was fun and the yarn is pretty!!
I saw Rebecca do something like that! What a fun time with the kids, too! There are so many different methods and ideas that I go down a rabbit hole when I watch her channel!
Really enjoyed the video. I have not dyed my Knitcrate yarn yet but I will follow your suggestions. I have dyed some yarn before and it was fun. However I used Rit dye which I had on hand. It will be fun using the Kool aid. And to think I used to drink that stuff when I was young. LOL
Don't follow MY suggestions! Follow Rebecca's! I was just doing what she told me! I didn't drink it when I was a kid but I did drink soft drinks which is actually just as bad but we just didn't KNOW back then!
This is so cool! Ive always wanted to dye some yarn, but I was conscious of the commitment when I wasn't sure i would enjoy it. Now I'm headed to purchase blank yarn and koolaid! 😁😁
Margaret Olander I’ve seen several ladies dye yarn on U Tube but you made it look so easy and everything went so smooth and I honestly think yours came out looking the prettiest that I’ve seen so far. Hello Margaret, I love how both skeins of yarn came out. I want to see them crocheted or knitted. Just a little sample. It must look great. You did a great job. Sending love from Germany to you all - Karin

Hi Margaret Great video. I was able to get Koolaide through a friend living in the US. We use the food colour you used in Canada it’s food safe. I also got some neon food colour I’m going to try. I also saw that Rebecca has used Wilton food dyes. I think it’s icing dye but I’m not sure we have those available as well. Your wool turned out beautiful. I would love to see something knitted from it. Would you consider a video showing that and more of your home. Your kitchen is beautiful. Take care and stay safe. 🇨🇦😊
Well, our U.S. McCormick dyes are not safe. Yes, we can drink Koolaid or use McCormick dyes in our cupcakes and not fall over dead but they lead to health concerns: www.special-education-degree.net/food-dyes/ Thomas has "significant to severe" ADHD and cleaning up his diet helped TREMENDOUSLY with that but there are greater issues than that. And thanks for the kind comments about our new home! We're loving it here! But no.... I won't be giving a "tour" but I also don't tend to record in the same location for various reasons so there's always the background! Ha!
I haven’t tried dying yarn as yet , I do love the way yours turned out .. You made me giggle when you asked your Alexa to set a timer for 5 minutes ,ours reacted to you and set it a timer too .. lol xx
I think the yarn turned out gorgeous! I can hardly wait to see it knitted up. I think I wold enjoy doing this - just what I need, another project! Lol! Thanks for a great video, I always learn something from you.
Didn't it look exactly like spaghetti?! Hahaha! It really was a fun little activity. I don't think I want to be an official yarn dyer but it's fun to dabble in!
Hi Margaret, it's so good to see you again and dipping your toes (and yarn) into something new. You videos always make my heart happy, keep up the great work and stay safe. Blessings from Melbourne, Australia ☺🇦🇺❤❤
Have yet to take a peak down this rabbit hole - but love the idea, especially with natural dyes. The yarn caked up looks beautiful - hope you show though, at some point in the future, how it turned out in a knitted project. Loved the video Margaret - thank you :-)
LUCKILY, I don't think it's a rabbit hole for me as I don't need another hobby! However, it WAS great fun for an hour or so! I'll be looking for projects to make with them but right now I'm happy just admiring the yarn cakes! I really surprised myself!
I've seen a few people dye yarn with the koolaid. Yours turned out beautifully. I have the kit. I want to dye my yarn🧶 as red speckles with the white. I like your large beautiful kitchen. Thanks for the video. 🙋🏽♀️🌺
That was fun and they turned out beautiful. Knit fast !! I want to see what they look like knit up lol. I have some Kool-Aid that I did manage to find in a store here in Canada and I have bare yarn. I just need opportunity and my daughter with me so she can enjoy in the fun also. If she dyes one, I will knit it for her.
I'll be looking for projects to make with them but right now I'm happy just admiring the yarn cakes! I really surprised myself! And yes... wait for your daughter! That would be a fun family activity!
Well... In truth, Joyce... I prefer to work with solid colors but I couldn't turn down the chance to be adventurous! I don't think I'll be a dedicated yarn dyer but I sure had fun with it for an hour or so! I like to try new things!
I always suspected that I wouldn't care for yarn dying because it was too kitchen-y for me (the one who doesn't care much for cooking). Turns out I was right BUT I've always been curious as to the process and how it works. That was fun to watch (especially the way the dye absorbs into the yarn leaving clear water). Thanks for sharing.
It looks so simple and so easy. I'm sure I would mess it up somehow lol The results came out pretty awesome... Are you going to post a picture or a video of the finished product?
Hi Mrs. Margaret! I've always wanted to try yarn dyeing. This made me really want to try it. I absolutely love the colors you got!! Can't wait to see what you make. Happy Crafting and God Bless 💖😘
I’ve never had any desire to dye yarn but I think I’ll have to try this. It looks like so much fun and easy to do. I know I’m seven months behind but I’m catching up on your videos.
Ooo! Make some time to try it, Janice! I WAS fun! I don't think I want to be a full time yarn dyer but it was quite a fun little activity! I've since knitted up the red/orange and it came out so pretty as a self-striping hat!
This was so much fun to watch , I have that knitkrate to and was kind off chicken to try it myself . Now I seen you , I have to give it a go ! Thank you for sharing this , have a wonderful weekend ❤️
Beets and turmeric are most often used to replace harmful chemical dyes in the red/orange family. Carmine, which is natural but from insects (so not vegan) is also used, usually in cosmetics.
I did that with my knit crate! Loved it!! However, no koolaid in my country and I think knit crate was very stingy sending only 2 packs. Really not enough for the outlook I was attempting!
Well, in fairness to KnitCrate, they had no idea what you were planning! (I'm glad they didn't send more because I don't want to support a company that voluntarily puts harmful chemicals in our food supply and markets them to kids!)
@@sheepishlysharing kind of agree with you on the supporting a bad company but come on koolaid is what a few cents a pack?! I think this crate was very stingy!
Well that was fun and informative to watch! I love how they both turned out! Anxious to see a finished project with this yarn! Good job Margaret! Oh and I have to say its not as intimidating as I thought it would be! lol
Love the finished project will have to try this ..we are in the midst of a second wave here and are back in lock down yet again ..the virus is brutal to the people businesses and over all mental health of all but your video gives some light and something to try out thankyou so much 🌍👍🇦🇺😷
Texas is on rewind. Some things that have opened are closed again. Mandatory masks. I still stay close to home. This was a fun little project and doing something new is great for lifting spirits!
My grandmother used to tease that she was a “hooker” - back in the ‘50s and ‘60s that was rather scandalous! She hooked rugs and wall hangings from wool she dyed at home. I would go next door, smell the vinegar and say, “Ooh, Grandma! Are you pickling ‘terial?” She was a true fiber artist. She knit every dress, sweater and coat she wore daily; and only owned a couple of cotton dresses for summer...which she sewed, of course. She tried to reach me to knit (continental style) but I couldn’t make it look as perfect as hers was right out of the gate! She showed me the basics of crochet, telling me it was much more forgiving, and off I went! Over 50 years later, (and several years hiatus) I’m so pleased to find all the creative stitch patterns, tips and hints that make for excellent artistry! Thanks, Margaret. It’s fun to watch your channel! I feel like we could be friends....
Yeah many people drank Kool-Aid, that’s for sure. Remember those commercials with the giant Kool-Aid pitcher running around?? But of course, that’s before we knew what we do today. We didn’t drink it at our house but we did drink cokes!
This so awesome and i will love to see what you make, with both yarn dyed so cool. I love it thanks for sharing . :) I have never dyed yarns ever . :) Be safe be well hug's :) toni g . :)
It was definitely a fun project and I highly recommend trying it! I'll be looking for projects to make with them but right now I'm happy just admiring the yarn cakes! I really surprised myself!
Did you say you can't get Kool Aid in Canada? Because we've always had it here. I drank it as a kid in the 80s and 90s and my husband still buys it occasionally now (I refuse to drink it though). I'm wondering if maybe ours has different ingredients than yours. I know there are some U.S. brands we have here that are made with different ingredients when it comes to colouring. I think Kraft Mac and Cheese is one. We also have the same McCormick liquid food colourings here that you used.
Very true. You DO use different colorings than we do now (though the EU still does better than we do here in North America) however, the EU didn't do the banning until something like 2010. So yes... you probably grew up with all the bad stuff, too! What I don't get is why the Mars company makes different M&Ms for the EU but still feeds us the poison! (I'm sure it has something to do with money but what about common sense?!)
Um... no. It was fun and I'm glad I did it but it's not something I'd like to do on a regular basis. I have far too many questions about getting the results I create in my head! I think I prefer shopping to dyeing!
Absolutely! (Hence the apron. If you've ever spilled food coloring on clothing you'll know what I mean!) You can see there was NO bleeding when I was rinsing the yarn so fading will be minimal.
Oh yes... you can find it anywhere in the USA. We have lobbyists for the big chem companies that keep these dyes in our food supply. (Long story... sad but interesting if you care to research. Here's a small list of some of the dyes and the hazards we've learned about them. This is why other countries have banned them: www.special-education-degree.net/food-dyes/ )

I’m so glad you left the blue yarn tucked in skein form. That’s what I would have done, so now I know the outcome. This was fun to watch and inspiring.
Well... you know the outcome for what I did but you can use that info and modify your process to get different results! Or maybe flipped it halfway through the soaking process to evenly dye the outsides! Have fun with it!

Thanks, Midge!
I've seen a few people dye yarn with the koolaid. Yours turned out beautifully. I have the kit. I want to dye my yarn🧶 as red speckles with the white. I like your large beautiful kitchen. Thanks for the video. 🙋🏽♀️🌺
Thank you, Terri! I saw the speckle lesson on Rebecca‘s channel! It looks fun!
I’ve wanted to try this but thought it was too involved. After watching you I may reconsider! Thank you for sharing your experience.
I know!! I was worried 1) about my ability and 2) the possible mess! It was easier and much more fun than I expected!
I was definitely impressed with your outcome. Beautiful, very inspirational. 👍🤗😁
I assure you, there was no special talent on my part! I just followed Rebecca of ChemKnits' instructions! But thanks for the kind words, Lee Ann!
They are beautiful. I was not so adventurous and did a solid color.
Well... In truth, Joyce... I prefer to work with solid colors but I couldn't turn down the chance to be adventurous! I don't think I'll be a dedicated yarn dyer but I sure had fun with it for an hour or so! I like to try new things!
Hi Margaret, That was fun, and they came out beautiful. I have my knit crate yarn sitting here waiting for me to do mine....thanks for some ideas.
Rebecca has lots of Kool-Aid dying videos on her channel, Cindy! There are different techniques like speckling that could be really fun!
@@sheepishlysharing Thanks Margaret, I'm going to try it soon. I really like the fact that it is food safe to use our everyday stuff to dye it.
Me, too! However, this didn't feel kitchen-y... much more like laboratory-ish! I was a science teacher so this was great fun!
I enjoy watching you and would love to see what you make.
Thanks Pam! I’ll be looking for projects but for now I’m just admiring the yarn cakes! I really surprised myself!
That’s really fascinating!
Isn't it?? I had a good time with this little activity!
It looks so simple and so easy. I'm sure I would mess it up somehow lol The results came out pretty awesome... Are you going to post a picture or a video of the finished product?
It WAS easy, Deborah! I’ll be looking for projects but for now I’m just admiring the yarn cakes! I really surprised myself
Been trying to get my courage up to try this. You made it look easy! Thanks!
It IS easy, Karleen, and I love the hat I made out of it! Success!
Hi Mrs. Margaret! I've always wanted to try yarn dyeing. This made me really want to try it. I absolutely love the colors you got!! Can't wait to see what you make.
Happy Crafting and God Bless 💖😘
Give it a go! It was so much easier than I thought it would be!
I’ve never had any desire to dye yarn but I think I’ll have to try this. It looks like so much fun and easy to do. I know I’m seven months behind but I’m catching up on your videos.
It WAS fun, Donna! I don't really have any desire to be a yarn dyer but it was definitely a fun activity!
I loved this! So much fun! They both turned out beautifully! 🧡💙
Thanks, Joy!!
The yarn turned out great!
Thanks! I really surprised myself!
This was fun, thank you. I love your apron.
Thanks for hanging out with me, Gracie! My mom gave me that apron when I decided to become a stay at home mom. Ha!
Looks like fun I haven't dyed my knitcrate yet
Ooo! Make some time to try it, Janice! I WAS fun! I don't think I want to be a full time yarn dyer but it was quite a fun little activity! I've since knitted up the red/orange and it came out so pretty as a self-striping hat!
I just love Rebecca Chem Knits. Great video.
I do, too, Kimberly! She's simply fascinating!!
Very interesting, I loved the colors!
Thank you, Arlene! It was fun!
This was so much fun to watch , I have that knitkrate to and was kind off chicken to try it myself . Now I seen you , I have to give it a go ! Thank you for sharing this , have a wonderful weekend ❤️
You can do it, Jacoba! I was quite nervous, too, but it was really fun!
love the blue it looks tye dyed
Thanks, Cheryl!
Loved watching you do that Margret, maybe I will have a go at it?
Yes! Go for it, Didi!
I love the colors of your yarn
Thank you, Darlene!
I confess. Your Tarleton tshirt is what made me watch. Great video. I subscribed.
Haha! Really? Well, I confess that I didn't go to Tarleton BUT that's my maiden name so it has a special place in my heart! Welcome, Rebecca!
@@sheepishlysharing My son just graduated from there - the tshirt caught my eye. I've used the same technique for dying yarns. You did a great job.
how cool is this! Makes me want to get a hank and give it a try.
Do it, Nan! It was a fun little activity!
Beets and turmeric are most often used to replace harmful chemical dyes in the red/orange family. Carmine, which is natural but from insects (so not vegan) is also used, usually in cosmetics.
Those turned out very pretty 🥰
Thank you! 😊
I think this crate was very stingy!
by the way love your kitchen you have so much room to move around
I loved your presentation ❤️🧶
It was a fun little project, El! Thanks For hanging out with me!
Great job! Would love to see Grape Kool-Aid put to use. Going to check out that channel. Update: I saw her use the Grape.
She has lots of different Kool-Aid dying techniques on her channel. Fun to watch!
I got this kit cant wait to try it yours are so pretty tfs..Barbara
It was so fun, Barbara! I never would have tried it if it hadn't landed in my lap!
Well that was fun and informative to watch! I love how they both turned out! Anxious to see a finished project with this yarn! Good job Margaret! Oh and I have to say its not as intimidating as I thought it would be! lol
Thanks, Dianne! I’ll be looking for projects but for now I’m just admiring the yard cakes! I really surprised myself!
That was fun watching, but the kitchen and I may not be buddies in any situations. Lol. I manage not to starve, tough. Blessings
I’ve said on numerous occasions that I don’t enjoy cooking but this is not cooking!!! It was fun!!
that was fun. thanks
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for hanging out with me, Carleta!
Yes, you can get koolaid in Canada
I think you did a beautiful job. 🧶🇺🇸💕
Thank you, Pamela! It was fun!
Hey Margaret, new friend here 🇦🇺☺
Gorgeous yarn!
Welcome, Squishy! I had such a good time with this process... totally surprising myself!
It is cool. Good job...
Thanks, Susan! It was fun!
I'm watching this video and my Alexa set a timer for five minutes when you talked to yours. LOL
Oh goodness... I forgot about that! Sorry! I should have muted the magic word! Ha!
@@sheepishlysharing it was funny because I told her to stop but, five minutes later, the timer still went off. Ha!
Amazing!
Ha! Yes... I thought so, too! Amazing that I actually produced a usable product! I like them both!
Cool dye job. By the way I grew up on kool aid.
(I'm sure it has something to do with money but what about common sense?!)
will it wash out?
Nope. Not if you use protein fibers!
😊😊😊
😍
😆 🤣 😂 😹 😆 🤣 coolest
Very pretty
Beautiful 🌸👏👏👏👏👏👏🌸 So Margaret, do you have the yarn dying bug now?
Um... no. It was fun and I'm glad I did it but it's not something I'd like to do on a regular basis. I have far too many questions about getting the results I create in my head! I think I prefer shopping to dyeing!
Alexa stop 😂
Is that rude?! How should I have gotten her to turn off? I keep trying to thank her all the time...
Margaret, I so enjoy your videos. May I ask, are these dyes permanent?
Thanks, patQ
Btw, our local stores in the Houston area do carry Koolaid.
This is why other countries have banned them: www.special-education-degree.net/food-dyes/ )
thanks for vid pretty lady. be safe
Thank you, I will
The big question, what are you going to make with them? 🧐
I’ll be looking for projects but for now I’m just admiring the yarn cakes! I really surprised myself!
