You’re welcome 😊 It is so hard to capture the blue with koolAid because with each packet you add you're adding more acid - and more acid makes those blues strike faster. It is easier to get liquid food coloring drops to break.
@@ChemKnitsTutorials So, so cool! We use the drops to ice cookies and can NEVER get a good purple. It's always just a meh kinda shade of purple when we mix red and blue. Thx! 😊👍
Guess what ... I was wondering if you had too much wine at dinner, and then I remembered I had the speed at 75 for another video. Now thaaaaats better!!!
Followed your method in this video to dye yarn for the first time today - came out great! Couldn't have done it without you. Wish I could add a photo to this post
Hi Rebecca! I watched your breaking black livestream vod this morning and it made me wonder if the FD&C colors were available to purchase some where since you were bummed that the new black doesn't have the blue #2 in it. I found them on Amazon! Unfortunately, they come in 1 pound jars for around $20 per jar depending on the color. So I know it would be a bit of an investment (but cheaper than koolaid and wiltons in the long run) but I think it would be super interesting if you could experiment with making your own formulas for breaking colors and since it's in powdered form you could do a lot more techniques. Keep up the great work!
I was wondering how the grape would look dip dying. It definitely had a more dull almost grey tone on my speckled yarn efforts. Thanks for an informative vid!
Hi dear Rebeca I enjoy your videos very much, I dyed my yarn with kook aid and food coloring and in some the color is still coming out what should I do? Thank you
Hi! I might add some vinegar to your yarn and then microwave (while covered) in 1-2 minute intervals until it is hot again. Then let it cool completely. The bleeding should stop quickly if your yarn is wool. Good luck!
I've watched a couple of your videos where you mention the effect of the citric acid concentration in Kool-Aid on the dyeing process. Would it be feasible to add a bit of, say, baking soda to the initial dye bath to reduce the acidity? If so, then some pH testing strips should be helpful in determining the ideal balance for the effect you are aiming for. Just a thought...
I have some pH paper that I use occasionally when I'm not sure how well things are working. You **Could** do it, but I honestly don't think it is worth it. If I wanted the pH to be less acidic, then I would use food coloring and add citric acid (or vinegar) myself instead.
It is very mauvey. That little bit of white left is almost a grey. There is the barest hint of color to it so it is different from the yellowsish off white of the bare yarn. The Etsy listing has some clearer pictures of the yarn :) www.etsy.com/listing/595540534/dip-dyed-sock-yarn-7525-superwash-merino?ref=shop_home_active_4
Just got an email from KnitPicks about their "Simply Yarns" range of unbleached, undyed wool, cotton or alpaca yarns. They sound like they might be perfect for dying!
I would like to dip dye with KoolAid and then speckle it. How would I set the speckle? Could I just put it back in The dye bath? Do you have a video that covers this?
I think Friday's video is going to talk about speckling and dyeing yarn with KoolAid. There are a few other techniques in the following playlist th-cam.com/play/PLFvm3Bz7dhaWbaCRR1LayaYliLlAd1kra.html where I dyed the yarn first and then speckled with KoolAid.. including Dyepot Weekly #1! I just remember that as I was writing out this reply. I did kettle dyeing instead of dip dyeing, but that would still work. (My speckling technique is better now, but the way I set it works.) There is also a recent livestream in the playlist where I gave a lot of koolAid speckle examples. I recommend doing it on the countertop and then microwaving the yarn to set the speckles. If you put the yarn back in the pot then you might not catch the specks if that makes sense.
ChemKnits Tutorials thank you for the suggestion. Now I have some more videos to watch while I’m knitting tonight and prepare to dye tomorrow. Enjoying your channel and appreciate all the help.
Pretty yarn, as always! As I was sitting here watching this, I was wondering if the leftover liquid had any flavoring left in it. I know it would be strange to taste it but I think I would. It’s funny what pops into your (my) mind sometimes!
No, I don't think that there is a difference. It is possible, I suppose, but the ingredient lists were the same. I beleive that they have Red #40 and Blue #1.
Great question! To felt you need both heat and agitation. Minimal movement of the yarn in the hot bath prevents felting. (It is more risky to go from hot to cold than it is to go from cool to hot, too.)
You could 100% overdye the lighter part! I frequently will dye the same yarn multiple times in multiple steps, sometimes with letting it dry in between.
I think you can do ship to store or sometimes there is a minimum you can spend for free shipping. (I don't order enough from there to know if they have that, though.)
You will not be happy with the loops and threads knitting machine. If you were only going to make 10 hats it might do that. But the handle strips gears after a very few hats and you won’t be able to use. I bought two and had to return. I have used innovations and it is not best u can buy but it did not strip gears. Of course the addi is the best but is expensive
plus I read that even Addi needs gentle treatment it seems some of the yarn pops off needles I found with Loops n Threads you have to crank very slowly you cannot pick up speed, it shreds the gear
Between the yarn bases? Yes. Felici now retails for 9.99/100 g. Bare palette (the fingering weight non superwash) is 6.49/100 g. bare wota worsted (the yarn I actually used i nthe video) is also now $4.79/100 g. In this case, it isn't a cost in superwash versus non. The merino adds to some cost. non superwash merino (which I didn't have on hand) is more expensive.
I believe that most grape juice doesn't have any food coloring in it, although I could be wrong for sure. I havnen't tried dyeing with purple grape juice, but I have done wine before. th-cam.com/video/Y4TDHvLXoqg/w-d-xo.html (Super vintage ChemKnits video!)
Hmmmmm i saw that today and wondered about these drinks. Im going to get some of that flavor and one of the blue typhoon? Lol i cant remember. Sounds like more fun and more coloring to try. Woohoo
So interesting, to see that blue show up at the end. Thx for doing these experiments! 😊👍🧶

I am amazed how the dye in the water disappears!
It is so fun isn't it?

LOL! That is hilarious. I know that sometimes people watch me at 2x speed but I don't know about slwoing me down. ;)

I'm so glad the video was helpful, Barbara!
Maybe it didn't break like expected but would make a gorgeous finished product I'd wager. Plus purple is an awesome color!
Thank you! That is why I had to do the second yarn. I knew that the color broke it is just VERY subtle.
Wow!!! That is so beautiful!!! I cannot wait to try this!!!
Thank you! 😊
Oh man, OOOOH man! Now I know what I'm doing first when I get my bare yarn!
Woohoo! This came out soooo pretty.
If you put one package in and want it darker can you add another package. Should you take it out and the add the package then the yarn again
That's very cool and sooo lovely.
Thank you!
Love it
Thank you!
Yarn came out pretty good, color wasn't as intense as I thought it would be but overall still Beautiful Yarn! Thanks for sharing and Happy Dyeing!
The colors are deep vs bright. I suppose it is for the concord grape color vs a bright violet.

Fern, this reminds me... I have some powdered food coloring that I haven't played around with yet. I should go and check the ingredients. :)

Turned out beautiful. The thrill of homemade no other is the same. Unique is the finale
Gracias linda eres muy amable y jenerosa al compartir todos tus conocimientos👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏👏👏❤❤❤, te agradesco con el alma.
De nada!
Good afternoon. If I'm using kool aid can i sprinkle a bit of food colouring on the yarn for more colour?
Yes! There is a enough citric acid in the koolaid that this should work well.

It *cough* might have some flavor left... but don't ask too many questions about how I know that. ;)
Was there any difference in the formulation of the KoolAid?
No, I don't think that there is a difference. It is possible, I suppose, but the ingredient lists were the same. I beleive that they have Red #40 and Blue #1.
That was quick
KoolAid strikes SO FAST. I'm playing with some today and there is very little color penetration.
Why doesn’t the yarn felt or shrink with that boiling water?
Great question! To felt you need both heat and agitation. Minimal movement of the yarn in the hot bath prevents felting. (It is more risky to go from hot to cold than it is to go from cool to hot, too.)
Could you over dye the lighter part or would that ruin the rest?
You could 100% overdye the lighter part! I frequently will dye the same yarn multiple times in multiple steps, sometimes with letting it dry in between.
Good to know. I see a lot of experiments in my future. ;-)

Liz Clothier oh cool!!

the dye is probably at a very high concentration it was made to give a deep purple to 2 quarts of water ????
Yeah, there is a lot of food coloring in KoolAid - especially the Cherry and Grape flavors.
I think I will try 4 packets of purple but then speckle the end with a 5th packet and see what happens…
This would be delightful! It would be subtle, but should show up on the lightest patches.
You always do the same mistake, you should put all the yarn in the pot cuz look like the first part absorb all the color.
In this video I was trying to dip dye the yarn, where I intentionally let one end of the yarn get more color than the other. :D
