You can be amazed with certain pieces, but if your style is completely the same and your skill is at the exact same level, you probably need to improve. I still kinda like certain pieces from like a year ago, but my skill has drastically improved and it’s definitely very noticeable.
This makes me feel good and a little scared at the same time 😂 Good because I know that, if I keep going I will eventually improve and be able to look back at older pieces and spot things I’d do differently. But scared because I can already hear my future self yelling at my incompetence today.

it's insane on how you have improved in "just" the 4 months, it keeps me motivated to know that you can actually see progress in this amount of time since I easily get intimidated by the fact that most artists started like when they were 16 and have 10years+ experience
I a teen artist who my art change almost every month and improve by shadings whatsoever, i just wanna say it depends on how much you try new stuff and new shadings styles even if you have a lil of experience :)!! Been drawing for 10+ years now digitally

This is such a good video! Artists critiquing their old work is so so useful. Clarity is so underrated in my opinion, I knew that anatomy, values etc were important fundamentals when I started drawing but clarity is a big component to all fundamentals and I didn't think about it for years.
Watching Sam cringe at his own (still very lovely!) old art and realizing that every artist goes through it and that it’s just part of the process of improving
Lesson to take: even well established "famous" artist have this self-critiquing attitude. Just because you feel your art is "bad" doesn't mean this is how everyone sees it. Take it easy on yourself and keep an open mind over your progress, look at the bigger picture and see how much you've improved and what you should practice next rather than regretting that line in that piece you've done a long time ago. The fact you posted it for the public to see means at a certain point you were proud of it and that speaks a lot ! Nice work Sam, you definitely exposed this Sam guy lol
It's SO crazy to watch him make literally 3 small changes to the picture at 12:20 and it completely changes everything. I didn't see anything wrong with it at first just like he joked, but then he moved the shoulder and added tiny touches to the inside of both eyes and BAM. It was crazy what a difference those tiny changes can make.

SAM I KNOW ITS BEEN 4 MONTHS BUT I HAVE TO SAY IT. I respectfully disagree with what you were saying about the sillouhettes of the hair in the expression studies. Maybe its only me, but if I look at the facial expressions and look at the hair, they match. They fucking match. The surprised face has a sillhouette with high frequency waves, the irritated face has sharp hair sillhouette, the sad hair is droopy, the smug face has hair thats very relaaaxed and confident. Its fucking straight genius.

This was great. I can't definitively say I like your before or after ones better. They both have their own appeal. Either way, you still have one of my favorite art styles. Both the characters and scenery I find very relaxing.
It's great seeing artists we look up to point out their own flaws . No one is perfect but we sometimes hold ourselves to an unachievable expectation. Instead of trying to jump straight to perfection improve little by little.
If we all have to follow the same thing to make good art then i kinda wonder how to be original even when we know nothing in this world is original.it's a chain of inspiration from nature to what we have nowadays

when I was disgusted by my art from about a few months ago, I thought I just sucked and I wasn’t able to find something I wanted. however, when I drew those pieces, I thought they were amazing. I am 28 and started this year. Don't worry. You can do art as long as your hands work 🙂 you still have many years
it's all about dedication. if you draw just for 1 day in a month you not gonna magically improve the next time you draw
