Fun Fact: When Kaffey does the impression of Colonel Jessup ("He eats breakfast 300 yard from 4,000 Cubans who are trying to kill him"), that was completely improvised by Tom Cruise and the laughing by Demi Moore and Kevin Pollack is real. Also, I just recently found out that Jack Nicholson's line was supposed to be "You already HAVE the truth", but Jack being Jack, adlibbed "You can't HANDLE the truth!". It's one of the most iconic lines in film history.

A few good was also a broadway play. I once met singer Bonnie Raitt when I worked as a maî·tre d'hôtel, for a five star hotel. When this movie first came out, I remember Tom Cruise saying he had to be really ready for that courtroom scene because he knew Jack Nicholson was going to be bringing it. Great movie! I can watch it over and over and never get tired of it. Thanks for reacting!
One of the things I really like about this movie is the relationship between Kevin Bacon and Tom Cruise. As a former prosecutor, that is one of the things this film gets right about trial practice. When Kevin Bacon says he represents the United States without passion or prejudice, and his client has a case - that's true. He's just doing his job, and doing it competently and to the best of his ability. In my case, although I represented my state, I had many, many friends who were either public defenders or members of the private defense bar. For the most part, our interactions were cordial and friendly, and we both understood the other person was a necessary and vital part of the process. There were a few defense attorneys who were the "pull any dirty trick possible" types, and I am guessing there are also a few prosecutors that way too. But in general, both sides tends to treat the other side with respect. We'd argue like hell over one case, and then when it was over, it was time to move on to the next. There was no point in holding on to hurt feelings or trying to sandbag the opposition.
Nicholson got a lot of money for so few minutes in the movie but it was befitting of his then-stature. Reiner got him to stay for a little extra but couldn’t afford more in his budget. Then he needed some additional dialog. Kevin Pollock for years has an act with impersonations, including Nicholson. Some of the scenes with the judge started with Pollock just helping him rehearse, but then was used in the movie as you see the judge but hear Nicholson’s voice, it’s actually Pollock. Reiner said it was so good he couldn’t tell the difference. There’s some videos with the other actors recounting this and other “behind the scenes” stories that are really good.
Tom Cruise doesn’t get enough credit for the actor that he is as opposed to the blockbuster star that he is. But pre Mission Impossible films Tom Cruise was on fire with his performances! And this one was no different along with Jack Nicholson in this terrific film.💯💯💯💯
Yea his 83 to 94 run is the best of his career as far as pure acting. Risky Business, The Color of Money, Cocktail, Rain Main, Born of the 4th of July, A Few Good Men, the Firm, and Interview with a Vampire were all excellent. Then you throw in the blockbuster films Top Gun, Days of Thunder and he was the full package.
100% Classic movie. Nicholson gives one of his finest performances, and Cruise is outstanding. Going toe-to-toe with Jack in that courtroom scene was amazing. All the cast are good tbh. According to Sorkin, the film is inspired by true events (though not as graphic). His sister, Deborah, a lawyer, did a 3-year stint in the JAG Corps. where she defended a group of marines who had nearly killed a fellow marine under orders from a superior. So in the film, Danny is based (in part one could argue) on his sister. Brilliant film.

Awesome! One of my faves! Fun fact, Wolfgang Bodison who played Lance Cpl Dawson was Rob Reiner's personal assistant. During casting he liked his stature and appearance and had him read for the character and the rest is history as they say.
Having served 11 years in the Army, there are definite glitches in this movie, but it is mostly right on. One thing: in the military you have to know the difference between a lawful and an unlawful order. Ordering the code red here was not lawful. But you can see how difficult it would've been for the two guys to go up against the local Marine culture and refuse. There definitely would have been consequences as Dawson knew when he fed the confined Marine.

What I like about this movie is that it demonstrates a serious lesson in how to get a person to do what you want that person to do, as in this case, Kaffee figured out that in order to get Jessep to admit he ordered the code red, he had to continuously agitate Jessep, using a few key words and phrases to trigger Jessep more so into admitting he ordered the code red. Kaffee carefully pulled that off. When Kaffee said, "I think I'm entitled.", he knew saying that would get Jessep even more angry. That along with other things he said, as a build up to get Jessep to lose control and explode.
I just love the interaction between Kaffee (Cruise) & Spradling (Craven) over the guy with "drugs". Also the rifle display at the start is impressive!! Did you recognise the 1st witness called was Cuba Gooding Jr.?
I joined the US Army in 1998, and excerpts from this movie were cited in a block of instruction concerning "Lawful Orders" focusing on the fact that each Soldier (and by extension, Airman, Marine, Sailor and Guardsman) are expected to evaluate any order they are given to determine its morality and lawful nature. If a Soldier finds an order to be lacking in those regards they are EXPECTED to disobey the order and to bring it up to higher chain of command. Obviously not all service members are so vigilant in their discrimination of orders (see Abu Ghraib and a host of others), but it is the standard to which we hold ourselves and with the instruction given in Basic Training, there should be no service member who can plead ignorance or "just following orders" over things like this; they now have no defense, and they know it.
If you like Jack, you need to react to The Departed. A masterful performance by Jack Nicholson, Leonardo DiCaprio, Vera Farmiga, Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg, Martin Sheen...I mean, it's a simply stellar movie.
There's a great interview clip with Noah Wyle (who had a small part in this) about the table read of the script before they started shooting. Apparently, Nicholson was at 100% from the word go.

45:30 Yup, the whole issue was that Santiago was unwell, but because he had been passed as fit for duty by the doctor, everyone thought he was just a sad-sack who needed an 'attitude adjustment' to get himself together. The Code Red wasn't intended to kiII him, and, had he actually been in good health, it wouldn't've kiIIed him, just shook him enough to think ''I've got to step it up and get my game straight...'' But because he had that underlying health condition, it put his body under too much strain. But that wasn't something they could have known when they roughed him up (and, Dawson was shown as being a considerate guy, for sneaking the food to the Marine who had been ordered no food for the week, so he definitely hadn't intended to kiII) and the outcome and sentencing did show that 👍👍👍👍 This is one of those films I'll watch any time I see it on, and love it just as much every time 👍👍👍👍
As a nurse, I do hope in the real military that complaint symptoms ARE taken seriously. And that physician "expert" who testified is wrong...there ARE absolutely cardiac conditions which often have NO symptoms. One being Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy which can and does cause sudden death. Santiago had complained of symptoms and that so-called physician ignored that. I know this wasn't a medical drama or a large point of argument for the guilt or innocence of the defendents, but I would hope any real-life MD in the military would be held accountable too in some way for their actions. I realize medical opinion is personal judgment, but if I saw a patient with shortness of breath, chest pains, and fatigue (Santiago's documented symptoms), I sure as hell would be ordering more testing and put him on zero physical duty pending test results. Again, I know it wasn't the main point in the trial, but it's still very important. Maybe if further testing revealed a serious heart condition, he could have been honorably discharged and home...and not dead.

In case anyone has noticed in all of Jack Nicholsons movies, he's always got his name first on any poster or anything like that. Regardless how big a role he has in the film, he's always at the top. I mean, Demi Moore had more lines than him. And certainly did Tom Cruise. The reason J.N. has his name listed above everyone else's is because he made a deal in Hollywood that it would be that way on all his movies. Call it arrogance or some kind of phobia he has. All I know is that in his movies, he's steals the show.
As a US Marine, there are some of us that are fanatical about the Marines. You can’t run to the boss and snitch. You have to start with your supervisor first (layman’s terms). “Code Red” was made up for this movie but we did discipline our own when they kept f’ing up. Back when we called them “blanket parties” where you hold them down in their rack by their blanket and hit them (see Full Metal Jacket as an example. The worst thing is if you do go to. The worst part is that if you are court martialed, you will get a Conduct Unbecoming a Marine because you are held to a very high standard as a Marine! Military trials are different from regular trials. That exchange between Tom and Jack is legendary!

Just a little background on this movie. It (and the play it was adapted from) was based on a real event. In 1983 there was a fence line shooting at GITMO & there were actually 10 Marines that carried out the code red not two and the victim didn’t die. Seven of the ten pled guilty& three went to trial. The outcome was similar except that they didn’t get dishonorably discharged & were able to serve out their enlistment. About a year or two after this movie came out one of those three who went to trial was murdered and as far as I could find it’s still unsolved. His case was actually featured on Unsolved Mysteries.
I never watched the movie because I knew it was different than what really happened. We were there in GTMO when it happened (my ex was stationed there). In the movie, what did they do to him when they ganged up on him?

3:50 Tom Cruise has famously played a US Navy officer in 3 movies Top Gun, A Few Good Men and Top Gun: Maverick. In Top Gun he was a naval aviator and in this film he plays a naval lawyer in the Judge Advocate Generals corp. TV producer Donald Bellasario approached NBC back in 1995 created a tv series called JAG. The premise of the show was “What if Tom Cruise’s characters in these movies was the same person”. So for ten years the show followed the adventures of Navy officer Harmon Rabb who starts as a fighter pilot but must then change careers and become a lawyer. The senior officer in this scene with Demi Moore is played by actor John Jackson. Jackson actually played Rabb’s commanding officer Admiral Chegwidden on the show JAG. Admiral Chegwidden was the Judge Advocate General for the US Navy essentially the senior counsel for the US Navy. The show was a very imaginative and often showed the US Navy and America in a good light. That said I have met real life Navy JAG officers who would laugh and say “I don’t do half as much as Rabb does”.
Rich Eisen interviewed members of the cast, who told him that director Rob Reiner gave Nicholson the option to shoot his lines before or after the other actors. Nicholson did his lines, then ran the lines again while they got reaction shots of the other actors. The intensity of Nicholson's character ? He delivered that EXACTLY the same another 20 times while Reiner got reaction shots of all the other actors in the scene

As an X Petty Officer in the Navy I can tell you that you don't have to follow any orders that would bring harm to yourself or anyone else. That you are required to report any such order. Now the second part, if you make any allegations against a Superior officer and cannot prove it, you will be taken to the brig immediately for formal court Marshal.

The old school version of this movie is THE CAINE MUTINY with the great actor, Humphrey Bogart. Who as it turns out was one of Jack Nicholson's idols growing up, as well as one of his movie idols that inspired him to come to Hollywood. His story is a bit different than is here, but the crux of the trial is culled from this. It is also more of a psychological dismemberment of the mind slowly coming apart at the seams. The supporting cast is very good as well. You guys have been on a roll as of late. So, I send seasons greetings to your and your family. Maybe cone next year we could get a reaction to FATAL ATTRACTION or GLORY. Maybe even another Demi Moore film with Michael Douglas called DISCLOSURE. Or maybe, hive Jack Nicholson some more screen time in the movies AS GOOD AS IT GETS or TERMS OF ENDEARMENT. YOu'll really love these stories. In the meantime, MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY HOLIDAYS !!!
The writer, Aaron Sorkin, had a sister in the military who worked for the Judge Advocate General’s office, who told him the real-life story upon which he based the original play (it was on Broadway before the film was made). In fact, she went to Guantanamo Bay and defended some of the accused soldiers in court (IRL the victim of the Code Red didn’t die). Demi Moore’s character is based on Sorkin’s sister. This is one of my all-time favorite movies. That final courtroom scene is incredible. So powerful. I tear up every time. Kevin Pollack, who played Lt. Weinberg, tells the story that during shooting, Nicholson did that “you can’t handle the truth” scene perfectly every time, and everyone watching the filming was riveted. Nicholson even did his lines when they had to shoot Tom Cruise’s coverage, to make sure Tom had the tension to play against. Very generous for a big star. I enjoyed your reaction, because this movie raises serious ethical questions that deserve to be considered. Thanks!
I grew up military brat on bases and married military so this movie feels like home watching locations especially the ones I've been too. I understand and was raised understanding rate and rank and military protocol. Excellent movie I hope ya'll enjoy it.

Reel talk! Excellent movie. The verbal judo between Cruise and Nicholson is legendary. I think in this movie the young man who played Dawson was a crew member who caught the eye and got hired. This was his first movie ever. Ive had to be a member on courts martial panel. It's fascinating, nowhere near as dramatic. When we deliberated over punishment I was amazed how different military law really is. We take money, demote, discharge, etc. on minor offenses and can add prison and even give hard labor when it comes to Courts Martials. Hard labor purpose is to "induce exhaustion." That is so open ended what activities that will be!🤦🏽♀️❤️ Solving issues at the lowest level is to keep your fellow troop from getting in that big trouble.

My favorite story from this movie was the part of Dawson was supposed to be played by Cuba Gooding Jr. But, he didn't look "hard enough". They pulled the guy that ended up playing the part from the set crew. Cuba ended up with a smaller part.
In the Army, we called a Code Red a "Blanket Party" where a blanket was thrown over the non performing soldier and he was hit with various objects a LOT. If during training where marching or running was going on, and a trainee fell down in front of you, you had better not step around him, but step ON him or you'd be in the same dog house as he was. I'm sure that is not how it is anymore.
One of my favorites. To expand on your synopsis. The Matthew McConaughey you’re referring to is A Time to Kill. Now… Jesep is one of those alpha dog marine commanders. Iron sharpens iron, and everyone can be broke and remade into a better image. Sontiago’s treatment reminded me of Full Metal Jacket. Long story short, the “weak link” gets hazed and beaten by his own squad and when he does he snaps to and becomes extremely effective and efficient as a soldier (but he’s still mentally broken). That’s the idea behind what was happening. He’s weak, behind, on his run time, goes above and beyond rank to snitch on a squad member… discipline/break this person to a point to where they understand you need to improve and be better because people’s lives may depend upon it in combat. The Code Red/hazing was never meant to kill him. Just send a message to him of “you better get your shit together.” Example: the one marine who was talking about how he dropped his rifle because his hands were sweaty and his squad poured glue on his hands after they all were disciplined. He never dropped it again. This entire movie is very Hollywood when it comes to the court room but the exchange back and forth when you’re with certain characters is amazing, especially the end. Cathy knows Jesep sees himself as the smartest and strongest man in the room, so to pull him out of that sense of security and constantly question him of his integrity, intelligence, how he runs his command is down right insulting (especially to someone who is about to receive the rank of general/gold star). And when Jesep explodes into his rant, it comes from a place of not even morals but that of a chess player going “a pawns a pawn,” and there’s a much larger game here that’s being played. But it doesn’t matter, it doesn’t change the principles of what occurred, and THEN you tried to cover it up because not only did it happen on your watch but this would also possibly lose you the promotion or your command. All in all, a great movie in my opinion. And I’m happy you guys got to watch and experience it
Jack Nicholson was nominated for the best supporting actor Academy Award in 1993 for his performance as Nathan Jessup. For a hilarious Tom Cruise film, I highly recommend reacting to "Jerry Maguire" (1996) which also co-stars Cuba Gooding Jr and Renee Zellweger. PS- For a Christmas movie, if you do react to one or more, I really hope you react to "A Christmas Story" from 1983 which is celebrating its 40th anniversary. It's an iconic Chrismas movie that is very funny. Highly recommended.
I stumbled upon my old VHS tapes when giving my closet a good clean out. One of these tapes is a very underrated classic, not many people know this film, Killing Zoe (1993). It features Eric Stoltz from pulp fiction (the drug dealer). It's brutality in motion 😃

Another really great movie that Jack Nicholson was in is One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest in 1975. He won an Academy award. His performance is some of the best acting I've ever seen

The actor that plays the doctor is Christopher Guest. He has been married to Jamie Lee Curtis for decades. He make wonderful comedic films as writer/director/actor, including This is Spinal Tap and Best in Show. He is brilliant, and I would recommend checking out some of his films.
Lt. Weinberg made an interesting point about Lt. Calley from the My Lai massacre. Calley claimed that he was following the orders of Major Medina, but no one believed him. I personally talked to the radio operator of Major Medina. He definitely gave the order right over the radio.

For the most part, our interactions were cordial and friendly, and we both understood the other person was a necessary and vital part of the process. There were a few defense attorneys who were the "pull any dirty trick possible" types, and I am guessing there are also a few prosecutors that way too. But in general, both sides tends to treat the other side with respect. We'd argue like hell over one case, and then when it was over, it was time to move on to the next. There was no point in holding on to hurt feelings or trying to sandbag the opposition.
Nicholson got a lot of money for so few minutes in the movie but it was befitting of his then-stature. Reiner got him to stay for a little extra but couldn’t afford more in his budget. Then he needed some additional dialog. Kevin Pollock for years has an act with impersonations, including Nicholson. Some of the scenes with the judge started with Pollock just helping him rehearse, but then was used in the movie as you see the judge but hear Nicholson’s voice, it’s actually Pollock. Reiner said it was so good he couldn’t tell the difference. There’s some videos with the other actors recounting this and other “behind the scenes” stories that are really good.
Tom Cruise doesn’t get enough credit for the actor that he is as opposed to the blockbuster star that he is. But pre Mission Impossible films Tom Cruise was on fire with his performances! And this one was no different along with Jack Nicholson in this terrific film.💯💯💯💯

Yea his 83 to 94 run is the best of his career as far as pure acting. Risky Business, The Color of Money, Cocktail, Rain Main, Born of the 4th of July, A Few Good Men, the Firm, and Interview with a Vampire were all excellent. Then you throw in the blockbuster films Top Gun, Days of Thunder and he was the full package.
100% Classic movie. Nicholson gives one of his finest performances, and Cruise is outstanding. Going toe-to-toe with Jack in that courtroom scene was amazing. All the cast are good tbh. According to Sorkin, the film is inspired by true events (though not as graphic). His sister, Deborah, a lawyer, did a 3-year stint in the JAG Corps. where she defended a group of marines who had nearly killed a fellow marine under orders from a superior. So in the film, Danny is based (in part one could argue) on his sister. Brilliant film.

Awesome! One of my faves! Fun fact, Wolfgang Bodison who played Lance Cpl Dawson was Rob Reiner's personal assistant. During casting he liked his stature and appearance and had him read for the character and the rest is history as they say.
Having served 11 years in the Army, there are definite glitches in this movie, but it is mostly right on. One thing: in the military you have to know the difference between a lawful and an unlawful order. Ordering the code red here was not lawful. But you can see how difficult it would've been for the two guys to go up against the local Marine culture and refuse. There definitely would have been consequences as Dawson knew when he fed the confined Marine.

What I like about this movie is that it demonstrates a serious lesson in how to get a person to do what you want that person to do, as in this case, Kaffee figured out that in order to get Jessep to admit he ordered the code red, he had to continuously agitate Jessep, using a few key words and phrases to trigger Jessep more so into admitting he ordered the code red. Kaffee carefully pulled that off. When Kaffee said, "I think I'm entitled.", he knew saying that would get Jessep even more angry. That along with other things he said, as a build up to get Jessep to lose control and explode.
Glad you both have finally gotten to this one...This is a true classic...An awesome movie..
I just love the interaction between Kaffee (Cruise) & Spradling (Craven) over the guy with "drugs". Also the rifle display at the start is impressive!! Did you recognise the 1st witness called was Cuba Gooding Jr.?
I joined the US Army in 1998, and excerpts from this movie were cited in a block of instruction concerning "Lawful Orders" focusing on the fact that each Soldier (and by extension, Airman, Marine, Sailor and Guardsman) are expected to evaluate any order they are given to determine its morality and lawful nature. If a Soldier finds an order to be lacking in those regards they are EXPECTED to disobey the order and to bring it up to higher chain of command. Obviously not all service members are so vigilant in their discrimination of orders (see Abu Ghraib and a host of others), but it is the standard to which we hold ourselves and with the instruction given in Basic Training, there should be no service member who can plead ignorance or "just following orders" over things like this; they now have no defense, and they know it.

The Code Red wasn't intended to kiII him, and, had he actually been in good health, it wouldn't've kiIIed him, just shook him enough to think ''I've got to step it up and get my game straight...'' But because he had that underlying health condition, it put his body under too much strain.
But that wasn't something they could have known when they roughed him up (and, Dawson was shown as being a considerate guy, for sneaking the food to the Marine who had been ordered no food for the week, so he definitely hadn't intended to kiII) and the outcome and sentencing did show that 👍👍👍👍

As a nurse, I do hope in the real military that complaint symptoms ARE taken seriously. And that physician "expert" who testified is wrong...there ARE absolutely cardiac conditions which often have NO symptoms. One being Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy which can and does cause sudden death. Santiago had complained of symptoms and that so-called physician ignored that. I know this wasn't a medical drama or a large point of argument for the guilt or innocence of the defendents, but I would hope any real-life MD in the military would be held accountable too in some way for their actions. I realize medical opinion is personal judgment, but if I saw a patient with shortness of breath, chest pains, and fatigue (Santiago's documented symptoms), I sure as hell would be ordering more testing and put him on zero physical duty pending test results. Again, I know it wasn't the main point in the trial, but it's still very important. Maybe if further testing revealed a serious heart condition, he could have been honorably discharged and home...and not dead.

In case anyone has noticed in all of Jack Nicholsons movies, he's always got his name first on any poster or anything like that. Regardless how big a role he has in the film, he's always at the top. I mean, Demi Moore had more lines than him. And certainly did Tom Cruise. The reason J.N. has his name listed above everyone else's is because he made a deal in Hollywood that it would be that way on all his movies. Call it arrogance or some kind of phobia he has. All I know is that in his movies, he's steals the show.

As a US Marine, there are some of us that are fanatical about the Marines. You can’t run to the boss and snitch. You have to start with your supervisor first (layman’s terms). “Code Red” was made up for this movie but we did discipline our own when they kept f’ing up. Back when we called them “blanket parties” where you hold them down in their rack by their blanket and hit them (see Full Metal Jacket as an example. The worst thing is if you do go to. The worst part is that if you are court martialed, you will get a Conduct Unbecoming a Marine because you are held to a very high standard as a Marine! Military trials are different from regular trials. That exchange between Tom and Jack is legendary!
I was going to mention that they react to full metal jacket. Vincent d'onofrio gives 1 of the Best acting I've seen in movies particularly the 1 in the bathroom
Just a little background on this movie. It (and the play it was adapted from) was based on a real event. In 1983 there was a fence line shooting at GITMO & there were actually 10 Marines that carried out the code red not two and the victim didn’t die. Seven of the ten pled guilty& three went to trial. The outcome was similar except that they didn’t get dishonorably discharged & were able to serve out their enlistment. About a year or two after this movie came out one of those three who went to trial was murdered and as far as I could find it’s still unsolved. His case was actually featured on Unsolved Mysteries.
I never watched the movie because I knew it was different than what really happened. We were there in GTMO when it happened (my ex was stationed there). In the movie, what did they do to him when they ganged up on him?

3:50 Tom Cruise has famously played a US Navy officer in 3 movies Top Gun, A Few Good Men and Top Gun: Maverick. In Top Gun he was a naval aviator and in this film he plays a naval lawyer in the Judge Advocate Generals corp. TV producer Donald Bellasario approached NBC back in 1995 created a tv series called JAG. The premise of the show was “What if Tom Cruise’s characters in these movies was the same person”.
So for ten years the show followed the adventures of Navy officer Harmon Rabb who starts as a fighter pilot but must then change careers and become a lawyer. The senior officer in this scene with Demi Moore is played by actor John Jackson. Jackson actually played Rabb’s commanding officer Admiral Chegwidden on the show JAG. Admiral Chegwidden was the Judge Advocate General for the US Navy essentially the senior counsel for the US Navy.
The show was a very imaginative and often showed the US Navy and America in a good light. That said I have met real life Navy JAG officers who would laugh and say “I don’t do half as much as Rabb does”.
Rich Eisen interviewed members of the cast, who told him that director Rob Reiner gave Nicholson the option to shoot his lines before or after the other actors. Nicholson did his lines, then ran the lines again while they got reaction shots of the other actors. The intensity of Nicholson's character ? He delivered that EXACTLY the same another 20 times while Reiner got reaction shots of all the other actors in the scene
Back in my day, in the Army it was called a blanket party, because it would start with a blanket being thrown over the guy's head so he did not know who was involved.
As an X Petty Officer in the Navy I can tell you that you don't have to follow any orders that would bring harm to yourself or anyone else. That you are required to report any such order. Now the second part, if you make any allegations against a Superior officer and cannot prove it, you will be taken to the brig immediately for formal court Marshal.
Always good to watch your Reactions. Not sure if Asia has any Military experience, it looks like it at times, however, her reaction to Tom Cruises character in the beginning is hysterical. Keep up the good work.

The old school version of this movie is THE CAINE MUTINY with the great actor, Humphrey Bogart. Who as it turns out was one of Jack Nicholson's idols growing up, as well as one of his movie idols that inspired him to come to Hollywood. His story is a bit different than is here, but the crux of the trial is culled from this. It is also more of a psychological dismemberment of the mind slowly coming apart at the seams. The supporting cast is very good as well.
You guys have been on a roll as of late. So, I send seasons greetings to your and your family. Maybe cone next year we could get a reaction to FATAL ATTRACTION or GLORY. Maybe even another Demi Moore film with Michael Douglas called DISCLOSURE. Or maybe, hive Jack Nicholson some more screen time in the movies AS GOOD AS IT GETS or TERMS OF ENDEARMENT. The writer, Aaron Sorkin, had a sister in the military who worked for the Judge Advocate General’s office, who told him the real-life story upon which he based the original play (it was on Broadway before the film was made). In fact, she went to Guantanamo Bay and defended some of the accused soldiers in court (IRL the victim of the Code Red didn’t die). Demi Moore’s character is based on Sorkin’s sister.
This is one of my all-time favorite movies. That final courtroom scene is incredible. So powerful. I tear up every time. Kevin Pollack, who played Lt. Weinberg, tells the story that during shooting, Nicholson did that “you can’t handle the truth” scene perfectly every time, and everyone watching the filming was riveted. Nicholson even did his lines when they had to shoot Tom Cruise’s coverage, to make sure Tom had the tension to play against. Very generous for a big star.

I grew up military brat on bases and married military so this movie feels like home watching locations especially the ones I've been too. I understand and was raised understanding rate and rank and military protocol. Excellent movie I hope ya'll enjoy it.

Reel talk! Excellent movie. The verbal judo between Cruise and Nicholson is legendary. I think in this movie the young man who played Dawson was a crew member who caught the eye and got hired. This was his first movie ever. Ive had to be a member on courts martial panel. It's fascinating, nowhere near as dramatic. When we deliberated over punishment I was amazed how different military law really is. We take money, demote, discharge, etc. on minor offenses and can add prison and even give hard labor when it comes to Courts Martials. Hard labor purpose is to "induce exhaustion." That is so open ended what activities that will be!🤦🏽♀️❤️ Solving issues at the lowest level is to keep your fellow troop from getting in that big trouble.

My favorite story from this movie was the part of Dawson was supposed to be played by Cuba Gooding Jr. But, he didn't look "hard enough". They pulled the guy that ended up playing the part from the set crew. Cuba ended up with a smaller part.

In the Army, we called a Code Red a "Blanket Party" where a blanket was thrown over the non performing soldier and he was hit with various objects a LOT. If during training where marching or running was going on, and a trainee fell down in front of you, you had better not step around him, but step ON him or you'd be in the same dog house as he was. I'm sure that is not how it is anymore.

One of my favorites. To expand on your synopsis. The Matthew McConaughey you’re referring to is A Time to Kill.
Now… Jesep is one of those alpha dog marine commanders. Iron sharpens iron, and everyone can be broke and remade into a better image. Sontiago’s treatment reminded me of Full Metal Jacket. Long story short, the “weak link” gets hazed and beaten by his own squad and when he does he snaps to and becomes extremely effective and efficient as a soldier (but he’s still mentally broken). That’s the idea behind what was happening. He’s weak, behind, on his run time, goes above and beyond rank to snitch on a squad member… discipline/break this person to a point to where they understand you need to improve and be better because people’s lives may depend upon it in combat. The Code Red/hazing was never meant to kill him. Just send a message to him of “you better get your shit together.” Example: the one marine who was talking about how he dropped his rifle because his hands were sweaty and his squad poured glue on his hands after they all were disciplined. He never dropped it again.
This entire movie is very Hollywood when it comes to the court room but the exchange back and forth when you’re with certain characters is amazing, especially the end. Cathy knows Jesep sees himself as the smartest and strongest man in the room, so to pull him out of that sense of security and constantly question him of his integrity, intelligence, how he runs his command is down right insulting (especially to someone who is about to receive the rank of general/gold star). And when Jesep explodes into his rant, it comes from a place of not even morals but that of a chess player going “a pawns a pawn,” and there’s a much larger game here that’s being played. But it doesn’t matter, it doesn’t change the principles of what occurred, and THEN you tried to cover it up because not only did it happen on your watch but this would also possibly lose you the promotion or your command.
All in all, a great movie in my opinion. And I’m happy you guys got to watch and experience it

Jack Nicholson was nominated for the best supporting actor Academy Award in 1993 for his performance as Nathan Jessup. For a hilarious Tom Cruise film, I highly recommend reacting to "Jerry Maguire" (1996) which also co-stars Cuba Gooding Jr and Renee Zellweger. PS- For a Christmas movie, if you do react to one or more, I really hope you react to "A Christmas Story" from 1983 which is celebrating its 40th anniversary. It's an iconic Chrismas movie that is very funny. Highly recommended.

The actor that plays the doctor is Christopher Guest. He has been married to Jamie Lee Curtis for decades. He make wonderful comedic films as writer/director/actor, including This is Spinal Tap and Best in Show. He is brilliant, and I would recommend checking out some of his films.

Lt. Weinberg made an interesting point about Lt. Calley from the My Lai massacre. Calley claimed that he was following the orders of Major Medina, but no one believed him. I personally talked to the radio operator of Major Medina. He definitely gave the order right over the radio.
this was originally a play, written by aaron sorkin, one of the very best stage and screen writers in the last 50 years, if not longer. he created the west wing, one of my all-time favorite tv shows, and definitely one y’all should check out, if wonderfully-acted political dramas sprinkled with a healthy dose of workplace humor are up your alley.
