- Hey guy and girls this week im showing the difference between shallow and deep snare drums. There is no better or worse they're just different. I go through the different sounds high and low tuning and also the difference in rim shots and standard hits with the drumsticks. The two snares are a Vinnie Paul Pearl signature snare drum 14x8 and a Drumcaft series 8 14x4 both are maple snare drums.
Sounds like the preamp was clipping
Yeah I made a mess of the audio, not great
Perfect demonstration; great comparison. Thanks for the informative content.
Cheers, Thanks for saying so
In my experience, deep snares have more depth and are punchier. Shallow snares sound a bit more papery and harsh. Both have their applications. When I played in a punk band our drummer used to play a 13x6.5” snare and it was fantastic.
I use deep shell ... the way I look at it with the sounds is like vocals, the shallow is more of a head voice where as the deep is a guttural to chest voice! Much better control on deep shell then shallow especially in metal which is my preferred music and having that control especially for tom beats or fills
yeah i totally agree, good analogy. There so much more control from deeper drums. Thanks for the comment and letting me know your thoughts, chat soon Brendan
When I heard chon's album, "Chon" I couldn't think how you'd be able to get the sound from a shallow snare. I knew it had to be deeper.
Its cranked up high but it's still got a deep sound. I love it.
Thanks for the vid
No worries im glad you liked it
A better comparison would be same heads, same model drum, just different sizes.
cool
Another fellow drumcraft owner! I also own a drumcraft series 7 kit and itso ne of the best sounding kits I've played. Its a shame drumcraft as a company don't exist anymore
Hey Jack, cool, i got the series 8 its limited edition finish back in 2010, scottish burst. i love their drums wasnt a big fan of their hardware, but it always came with the drum kit so no complaints. I didnt know they their out business, do you know what happened? when did it happen?
@@BrendrumJones I'm not sure when they went out exactly but probably over a year ago maybe? But the guy who I buy my drums off was close to drumcraft and he said they close the business and invested and became apart of DW drums.
I wasn't keen on the hardware myself, I now use DW 5000 & 9000 hardware. I can see that drumcraft tried to copy DW hardware but made a cheaper version. Drumcraft hardware worked but its got nothing on the likes of DW and Gibraltar
@@jackstraughan ahh cool, hey thanks for letting me know Jack, well we have a piece of history now.
Thanks!
You’re welcome
I'm trying to make mine sound as loud as eric carrs drums he used in creature's of the night. Done nothing but breaking drumsticks and covers, because I smash them so hard
cool
damn, what a jawline
LOL
Different pitch and distortion. Can't really tell.
Agreed, i made a balls of the recording, i half thinking of taking it down
Flawless video, very well done and useful. 👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks for saying so, chat again
The deeper snare is tuned higher!
helpful video ! but i’d suggest working on the right hand pulsing in the closed rolls ✌🏼
Why there is distortion
Cause i fucked up the recording
No sound
honky 800 hz too much on fatter drum
