Little known fact: In Bf5 if you chose the Medic class and melee he will have different animations going for important arteries such as the jugular, wrist, and throat. This is really interesting hinting that the Medic has had training on the Human Anatomy (Which WW2 Medics didn't commonly get).

But the ones before that I put a good bit of time in. Like mw2 and 3. But 3 wasn't all that great. But I've been on battlefield since bad company 2.
It's World War I. I think they wanted to replicate the brutality of close range combat. And of course it should take less skill to take someone down with a knife than it should with a gun at close range. That's what knives are for. I think this mechanic is great.

Spy from TF2 or counter strike mechanics.It might be my theory,but i think that you can dodge the Takedown when you jump.The same thing works with Bayonet.But i think the swing will kill you anyway.So you better die in the takedown.That way you'll give your teammates a time to revenge for you.Or even save from dying.it's possible.But hard to time.Your teammate might die because of the Takedown's half animation,but you'll be able to revive him.I saw those kind of situations many times.
I actually kinda like the system. While I will concede that being able to axe someone's face off from the front is a bit much, and some tweaking is definitely in order, it feels incredible to storm into a room, take three people out with your primary/secondary, then bury a hatchet in the last guy's neck.

Not really, if there is no takedown animation you can miss the final swing, if there is an animation you always 100% of the time kill people on low health even if your aim sucks.

Go dig a hole outside, then come back and tell us how fast, practical and fun that is. Actually digging fox holes or trenches takes ages and isn't something you could do fast enough for it to be practical in the middle of combat.

And, for future reference, this is basically what LevelCap dislikes about the current melee system: As it stands, you can usually guaranteed win any close range 1v1 just by hitting one shot with a high-damage weapon, and pressing the melee key. It would be a bit less silly if you at least had to aim the melee strike, even if it is in "kill range".
Well thats a fail on the kill zone description. Kill zone is the angle at which the game allows a 1 hit kill from behind. So a heavy weapon will have to be almost completely behind to 1 hit kill an opponent but the 2 hit kills from the front mean you should be winning a melee on melee fight. On a lot of the melee attacks in the video a regular small knife would have gotten a 1 hit kill from behind. So in terms of melee alone a knife would be better for someone like me who only melee attacks very rarely and when its a near guaranteed kill whereas a heavy weapon would be better for duels. A medium weapon might be better for someone to rampage depending on the game, 2 hits to kill anyone below 90% isn't much of a downside if everyone has taken damage and the extra speed and kill zone is pretty useful. However melee weapons also have a some utility so personally I'm split between the hatchet for wood and barbed wire or just a knife and forget melee exists as usual.

Awesome vid! Now I know why my swings don't always activate a takedown - I was convinced it was a always triggered based on your distance from your target. Btw, The Cavalry Sword is also part of the "Hatchet Category". Also bayonet falls into the blade category and does 100 damage, instant killing.
But you cant change melee weapon with the Cavalry class. You're stuck with the sword and no other class can use it. so why the fuck would he mention it?

The take down animation actually makes it harder to go only melee than if you just hit them and they die, with the take down animation it leaves you vulnerable for several seconds
I honestly have no idea what your problem with the takedown animation is. If an enemy has 50 health and you shoot him with a weapon that does more than 50 dmg he is dead. If there was no takedown amination and you would just swing the melee weapon for 55 dmg he'd be dead but entering an animation that has no effect other than slowing you down is OP somehow??? FritzZeGerman In the video, he showed hm killing a guy who wasn't even on his screen. The lock on is over 180%+ and it locks the other guy in an animation, making it impossible to counter or give a chance to fight back.

I think its pretty accurate with the take downs, in World War I, most militaries had an insane idea of the range that most soldiers would fight at. I've seen pistol caliber carbines with sights that go out to 400 meters and think that most rifles on the battlefield were generally more than half as tall as the shooter. This meant that in the heat of battle, when an enemy was in your trench or behind your line; a knife, shovel, and table leg with hob nails was more valuable than your giant weapon.
The biggest flaw of all mele weapons is that without requiring any skills they're, all of sudden, more powerful than guns in close-quarter combat. One the animation begins u can do nothing but see urself die.

Don't get me wrong, i am loving this game. But you level up so slow and i personally feel like you don't get enough War Bonds per level. I don't like that you only get one item per battlepack now and the way you earn weapons kinda sucks but other than that...love it

I actually like the takedown from front action. means you stand a better chance against smgs when using rifles. also it leaves you vulnerable, whereas finishing someone with a gun means you're mor ready for next foe. fair tradeoff imo.
If anything when I get this game in my birthday and immediately play as medic and use the shovel. The hatchet's overrated and I just don't see the point of having weapons that can cut through barbed wire since you'll die doing it. For playing as medic I just think that I should ever since I played as a medic in tf2 and tfc and Mercy from Overwatch. I just find it relaxing to heal people.

The funny thing is that the kills which are not in the killzone, like swinging while sidestepping, and hitting the enemy midswing are faster and not triggering the animations, as far as i experienced.
I'm surprised you didn't have a clip of shooting someone once and then hatchet. I really like that one revolver shot can be followed up instantly with a face hatchet when I'm caught off guard and have to panic defend.

Killzone range is the angle, when approaching someone from behind, that triggers a 1 melee take down. Not the distance that you can damage someone. Higher the value, the wider angle you have to trigger the take down. Smaller the value, smaller angle to trigger.
The trench raider is such a good elite class not because it just has a 1 shot melee club, a medkit and a bunch of grenades, but it doesn’t have a melee takedown in the first place. If you could kill someone, even with a knife, without the melee takedown then everyone would be overpowered close-quarters.

Daniel Antony In WW1 you didn't stop frantically shooting/trying to maim your enemy in close quarters so they could perform their fancy killing maneuvers on you either. But in BF1 it's a staple of close-quarters combat because Lolz Dice just gots ta get them super cool animations ins on the Battlefield for all teh nuubs.

Go dig a hole outside, then come back and tell us how fast, practical and fun that is. Actually digging fox holes or trenches takes ages and isn't something you could do fast enough for it to be practical in the middle of combat.

Letting the shovel dig holes would be pretty cool, it would give a reason to take the shovel over the other heavy melee weapons.

I wish Dice would add a 'saber' class, it would be for the Sabertooth knife and the Calvary sword and would have different stats and animations. I feel like theirs so much potential there.

Retrofly Glad to know I'm not the only one who does this. Whenever I play war pigeon I always make sure to use a revolver or a bolt action in close quarters to go for those takedowns
And, for future reference, this is basically what LevelCap dislikes about the current melee system: As it stands, you can usually guaranteed win any close range 1v1 just by hitting one shot with a high-damage weapon, and pressing the melee key.
It would be a bit less silly if you at least had to aim the melee strike, even if it is in "kill range".

Well thats a fail on the kill zone description. Kill zone is the angle at which the game allows a 1 hit kill from behind. So a heavy weapon will have to be almost completely behind to 1 hit kill an opponent but the 2 hit kills from the front mean you should be winning a melee on melee fight. On a lot of the melee attacks in the video a regular small knife would have gotten a 1 hit kill from behind.
So in terms of melee alone a knife would be better for someone like me who only melee attacks very rarely and when its a near guaranteed kill whereas a heavy weapon would be better for duels. A medium weapon might be better for someone to rampage depending on the game, 2 hits to kill anyone below 90% isn't much of a downside if everyone has taken damage and the extra speed and kill zone is pretty useful. However melee weapons also have a some utility so personally I'm split between the hatchet for wood and barbed wire or just a knife and forget melee exists as usual.

Btw, The Cavalry Sword is also part of the "Hatchet Category".
Also bayonet falls into the blade category and does 100 damage, instant killing.

like you're just sitting in a light tank paying attention to something else and you hear a muffled battle cry and a moment later a clank as a bayonet makes contact with the light tank.

The Hatchet also seems to have a slightly quicker take-down animation which is another reason I prefer it.
The take down animation actually makes it harder to go only melee than if you just hit them and they die, with the take down animation it leaves you vulnerable for several seconds
I honestly have no idea what your problem with the takedown animation is. If an enemy has 50 health and you shoot him with a weapon that does more than 50 dmg he is dead. If there was no takedown amination and you would just swing the melee weapon for 55 dmg he'd be dead but entering an animation that has no effect other than slowing you down is OP somehow??? Explain it to me pls...

FritzZeGerman In the video, he showed hm killing a guy who wasn't even on his screen. The lock on is over 180%+ and it locks the other guy in an animation, making it impossible to counter or give a chance to fight back.

I think its pretty accurate with the take downs, in World War I, most militaries had an insane idea of the range that most soldiers would fight at. I've seen pistol caliber carbines with sights that go out to 400 meters and think that most rifles on the battlefield were generally more than half as tall as the shooter. This meant that in the heat of battle, when an enemy was in your trench or behind your line; a knife, shovel, and table leg with hob nails was more valuable than your giant weapon.

The biggest flaw of all mele weapons is that without requiring any skills they're, all of sudden, more powerful than guns in close-quarter combat. One the animation begins u can do nothing but see urself die.

Seizmos yeah but they reduced the area in which one hit kills are in. A lot of times on the guys right or left and no takedown will commence even if i am just a tiny bit in their 180 degree front side

Don't get me wrong, i am loving this game. But you level up so slow and i personally feel like you don't get enough War Bonds per level. I don't like that you only get one item per battlepack now and the way you earn weapons kinda sucks but other than that...love it

Kieran Warbonds aren't an issue past level 40. You just need to prioritize the gadgets and weapons you want in the beginning.

I actually like the takedown from front action. means you stand a better chance against smgs when using rifles. also it leaves you vulnerable, whereas finishing someone with a gun means you're mor ready for next foe. fair tradeoff imo.
If anything when I get this game in my birthday and immediately play as medic and use the shovel. The hatchet's overrated and I just don't see the point of having weapons that can cut through barbed wire since you'll die doing it. For playing as medic I just think that I should ever since I played as a medic in tf2 and tfc and Mercy from Overwatch. I just find it relaxing to heal people.

I'm surprised you didn't have a clip of shooting someone once and then hatchet. I really like that one revolver shot can be followed up instantly with a face hatchet when I'm caught off guard and have to panic defend.

ComputersAreRealCool I did knives only on COD back in the day. It's possible to get good at melee in shooters, you just have to know the map and be batman.
One thing that could have been better is the animation for the sword. I expected slashing and stabbing instead of the chopping animation.

If someone gets close enough to you to melee you down from 100 health, you deserve that brutal death. If you're fighting someone close up and end having low HP and they melee you first, sorry but they out played you. Everyone is complaining about this takedown animation, but did you all forget that most of the time you die right away from someone else while doing the animation? Awesome you melee killed someone, but you instantly died right after. Melee isn't a big deal at all. You people are complaining about nothing.
Krimlo Most of the time I hear people saying they can't react or stab them just because they were low health, but that's the point, that exact swing would have killed you anyways thus it grants the animation.
How are so many people missing the point? Didn't you listen to the video? The problem isn't the takedown the problem is the auto lock on that initiates it. Getting the takedown when you didn't even look at the guy is just plain dumb. I'd be fine with the animation if it would require me actually aiming at my enemy.

you cant impose an honor etiquette on a whole player base. but nothing in this video is even broken or exploitable. its just degrees of efficiency. all the melee weapons function very similarly with slight pros and slight cons. what is there to even be upset about
Killzone range is the angle, when approaching someone from behind, that triggers a 1 melee take down. Not the distance that you can damage someone. Higher the value, the wider angle you have to trigger the take down. Smaller the value, smaller angle to trigger.
The trench raider is such a good elite class not because it just has a 1 shot melee club, a medkit and a bunch of grenades, but it doesn’t have a melee takedown in the first place. If you could kill someone, even with a knife, without the melee takedown then everyone would be overpowered close-quarters.
At 4:50 what are these gun sights and can you get them on ANY of the medic guns? Learning the ropes here.
