In this video, Olympian and Coach, Luke Walton breaks down the key elements of success on the rowing machine-fluidity, technical precision, and the art of feeling your way to efficient strokes. Watch now and elevate your rowing game.
The rowing machine doesn’t care about you. It doesn’t care how hard you work. It will not reward you simply for how hard work. the rowing machine is a relentless measure of efficiency, not just effort. The machine simply records the efficiency with which you apply your effort. You will never beat the rowing machine. You will never pull so hard that the machine submits.
With this understanding, you must learn to row the machine the way it wants to be rowed. The machine is attempting to mimic the natural rowing environment, which is water. Water is the definition of fluid. Thus, the machine wants to be rowed fluidly. To be clear, you can row hard and strong, but You must also be fluid.
Further, understanding the ebb and flow of the fan/flywheel on the machine is key to rowing at the highest level. You don’t want to overdo, or under-do it with your rowing effort. Too little or too much both have their issues. Instead, you want to be exact in your physical and technical application on the rowing machine. Coach Walton utilizes the metaphors of playground swings and teenagers slamming doors to illustrate this point. You need to be able to feel the machine. You must feel the flywheel around the front end of the stroke. You must feel pressure against the feet and handle (feel suspended) at the catch. The front end, the catch, is not about effort, it is about feel.
Paying attention to how the machine wants to be rowed is key to your rowing success. You will never beat the machine, so learning how to row it with great efficiency (in compliment to great power) leads to your fastest, most efficient, most durable rowing strokes. Rowing with fluidity, mimicking the natural flow of water will enhance your performance.
This video is your guide to understanding the subtle yet powerful mechanics that can transform your rowing technique.
