It is unbelievable to me that with a 31 or 32 spm, you are able to maintain 1:37. I am 71, and at 31 spm, I do 500 m intervals at 2:10 to 2:20, for 5000 m. Your videos are an inspiration. Excellent effort!
Gutted you weren’t at the BRIC yesterday Cam…. hopefully next year. I had your 7min erg workout on my phone & it worked a treat. It was a great atmosphere but the air inside the arena was really dry, which I think affected a lot of people.
Fingers crossed! That's awesome glad it helped. Yeah unfortunately that usually happens in these events! Just have to go for it and get a good warmup in
My man, you are a beast!, i just started doing rowing for fun and bc i like the challenge, all my life i have liked sports, and always i have been a big guy, rowing is a difficult exercise for me and i love that, my record is 7:06 and i always get mad bc i want to do under 7 minute in 2k, i will do it for you bro! sendig good vibe from México!!!
I watched while folding laundry and it did not result in a 6:30 2k. That may gave been user error. But, even without rowing along, these are helpful in visualizing how it should feel at different points in the piece and when to push the pace. PS At all of rhe "how are you feeling" check-ins, my little guy said "sad that I don't see Yam".
Smashed it mate. I've been using your coaching for a few weeks and you guided me to just crush a 6:22 today on a Freeform R2000. Then had to do 45 mins of HIIT 😂🤮
I have a 2k coming up and my goal is sub 7 and watching you casually pull a 6:30 while talking is absolutely crazy and watching you, I think that I can do it so thanks so much for inspiring me definitely will try to check in after I do it
Hello cameron my record in 2000m machine is 6:33 , my target is under on 6:30 thanks for this video, very claear and funny, this friday have a test the 2000m and i'm even more exited
Hi cam, been watching for a long time but not for a while (if that makes sense). You could imagine my surprise when I see you training in a boathouse that I recognise! I rowed at Avon County but had to stop due to hip surgery and never picked it back up! God to see you going stronger than ever! All the best.
Cameron, can’t thank you enough for the advice, encouragement and motivation. Just out from 2k benchmark row (water rower) and beat previous PR by 10 seconds. Cheers!
Trying to get back into shape and set the American national indoor rowing record this winter. What you said in the beginning about going too hard too fast is what I keep doing. I’m able to hold a 1:17/500m pace for about 300 meters now. After that it takes about 20 seconds or so to catch my breath before rowing again. Then the rest of the row is really a lot more difficult. I was able to Cut about 30 seconds of time off my 2k in just the first 3 weeks of training. If I keep a more steady pace I’m sure I could do even better. Then it’s just conditioning really. I get out of breath pretty quick compared to when I was in better shape.
@@CameronBuchan thanks. I did try to keep the pace you had in this video today. Kept it up for the first 500. Had to back it down a bit after that but finished with a 7:12 2k. That’s a full minute faster than the first time I rowed this month. It’s crazy how much better I feel now after rowing and lifting a few times a week. Not just with the rowing times but going from being out of shape and addicted to them damn Celsius drinks to being slightly in shape and not addicted to caffeine any more. Thanks for posting these videos man, they’re definitely one of the motivations I had to start getting in shape again.
So I’ve been doing Orangetheory for almost 6 months and tomorrow we have a 2000 m benchmark row. I actually have a concept 2 at home which I never use but I decided to try it out today and my average strokes per minute was up around 39. It took me 9 minutes and 46 seconds to achieve 2000 m. I just can’t seem to wrap my head around a lower stroke rate being more efficient. I know I’m doing something wrong possibly more than one thing but I’m working on it. Just wanted to say that’s an awesome video and I’m going to come back to it again thank you for those great tips!
Thanks for watching! You have to understand that stroke rate is not directly correlated to speed. Speed is measured by how hard you push for how long you push. So if you push very hard but for a long time, let's say at 25spm you could have a faster split that say very light at a 40 spm. I would say about your stroke rate being 39 suggests that you aren't rowing very efficiently. Most likely not using the leg much. Hence you're able to get a higher rate. You want to look like I do in the video. Legs then body then arms! I'd hope those at ornage theory could help you out more in person. Lastly, there are a few other times on the channel that you could work towards, ie 8 minutes then 7 minutes and then hopefully to this 630! Enjoy!
@@CameronBuchan thank you very much for getting back to me and in such a timely manner! I took your advice, legs, body, arms. I just did 1000 m and my projected time was under nine minutes. I could see my projected time dropping as I powered through using mostly my legs. I don’t want to wear myself out before tomorrow. Let’s see how I do and I’ll get back to you, but you’ve given me some very sound advice and as I’m writing this, I’m also watching your video! Thank you again!
So I did 7.50.54 my goal was under 8 minutes, which I achieved. basically shaving two minutes off my 2000 m row from yesterday. I focused on the legs as you advised. the other thing is I tend to bring the handles below my sternum, so I focused on putting them where they belong. I also wanted to keep it at 30 SPM. I felt that pace was comfortable for me. Orangetheory uses water rowers so it’s a little different. I know I can do better, but I was pleased with the result. I know I can out run and out row most people in my age group, which is of little interest to me. I want to best everyone, especially people half my age. I’m 66.. I’ll be following your page for more great tips. You’ve given me a lot of invaluable advice.! Thank you!
Great video! I myself started rowing 3 months ago, just had my 2k test a few weeks ago and did a little under 9:00. I find your videos like that super inspiring! Hope I’ll improve with your tips and do better in February 🤞
This video annoys me....not because of the content its great. More for the fact I started indoor rowing for a few weeks then joined a comp and did 6.38. Then decided to train for another one and got 6.28 (goal was between 6.20-6.30). I literally had to lie down for like 20-30 minutes and couldn't move then puked and was written off for the day. To see someone casually do a 6.30 while commentating is incredible (for me). Not that I am on your level but shows how much room for potential improvement there is.
I started rowing recently (few months). Still improving technique. Trying to break the 8 minute barrier for 2 km. Best 500 m time was today (1:57). Any tips for shorter rowers? (171 cm).
I’m definitely more built for longer distances, max 1km was 3:22, 2km 6:30, my 10km is 35:30 though! Talking to an experienced rower recently he said my 10km time was really impressive at 40. Could I get better?? I only jump on the erg occasionally in the gym.
Probably not necessarily built for longer distances but have just trained “better” for longer distances. The shorter the distance the more specific the training has to be for that! Your 2k probably matches up roughly with the 10k with just the 1k being relatively slower. Decent time for a 10k but not super fast so probably room for improvement but I don’t know your training or much about you so maybe not! Bit of a how long is a piece of string question. Could sign you up to my training programs and see if we can get sub 35 minutes 💪
Yes very interested in training. Makes perfect sense with distance actually as I do tend to just do 7.5/10/15 or occasionally 20km. Mainly swimming, biking and running. I actually use the erg for an overall body workout and skimp on resistance training 🤷🏽♂️

Hi do you have any tips to improve my spm, I did a 6:40 2k with avg 24-25 spm. Whenever I try to bump up the spm to around 30 I get nauseus and want to vomit.
Most likely because as you are bringing the spm higher you are probably keeping the pressure the same. Try having lighter strokes so you can go the same pace
Hi Cam great videos on the row along for the 2k I attended BIRC for the first time I got a pb which l am very pleased with and archived my life ambition for a sub 7 2k but in my preparation for this event I wasn’t able to maintain a steady state pace this it was ended up doing 500m splits of 1:40/1:46/1:46/1:41 what do I need to do to for a more even splits it seems it’s only the 2k I struggle with doing this
Well done on the PB!! For a 2k, everyone can work with their own strategy. If you are looking at holding an even split, the going out at 140 when you're not capable of a 640 is not going to work. As mentioned in this video and the other 2k row alongs, after some hard strokes at the start you have to settle onto a pace you are capable of.
Hi Cameron. I have hit a plateau in my 2k time at 6:54. Weirdly by the end my legs are destroyed (can barely stand up) but cardiovascularly I’m fine. Heart rate not that high. What can I do to improve as it seems my leg muscles endurance is the limiting factor?
