  • On this episode of the Average Joe Hot Rod Show we look at Steve Quick’s 1965 Plymouth Sport Fury that he restomodded with his son Trent. And I know what you are thinking...is that really his name? Yep, call it kismet that a guy with the last name Quick is into old cars with big V8’s.
    This episode was a labor of love because it was sold in my town at a dealership within walking distance of my current home. . I was able to to actually go stand where that Plymouth was first sold in 1965 and for someone trained in historical research, that made it a little bit more fun for me.
    So follow along as we walk in this Mopar’s footsteps from it was new off the lot, to where it was abandoned in a field to rot, to where it was lovingly and painstakingly brought back to life by a father and son team.
    If you like big old American Iron with rootin’ tootin’ big blocks and manual transmissions...this may be an episode for you.

    I have a special love for the 65 Sport Fury. Such a sleek car. My dad bought me one for my sixteenth birthday in 1974. He paid 500 dollars for it had about 75k on it. White with red interior, 383 commando V-8. Tourqeflite 727 auto. It- looked- like- new! Didn't have much money at sixteen so junk yards provided me with 440 heads, carter AFB, 3.73 rear chunk out of a truck all for around 200 bucks. Put thrush duals on it and full moon chrome reverse rims. Took off the fender skits and added Gabriel Highjackers to clear the white letter G60's, with G70's on the front. I had the only one around. That heavy ass sled was FAST. At a 20 mph kickdown it was damn near unbeatable. And everyone else knew it too. I drove her hard. Never let down. She was my first love. And have been a MOPAR man all my life. Your restore video brought big smiles to my face. But when you started her up and drove around the block happy tears rolled down my face. Thanks for the.wonderful memories of my dad loving his son so much as to give me this car. It made a man out of me in many ways. BIG BLOCK PLYMOUTH RULES FOREVER!

    Steve and Trent, thank you so much for building one of the finest cars ever designed. You did a spectacular job of blending old and new technology. The color scheme is off the charts. Of course I'm hoping Steve is going to let that 383 roll out but I don't see that happening. If it does, I'll be pleasantly surprised!
    I was around 22 when I found one of these off in the trees in a boneyard. I had no idea what it was at the time but I absolutely loved it at the time. It was way beyond repair and I didn't see another for a decade maybe more. That was a long time ago, I've since seen a few restored and I love them even more. To me the mid 60s cars are unequalled by any other period. 65 Malibu, GTX, Fairlane, Sport Fury III, LeMans, and on are levels above the late 60s muscle. Not only that, they are often much lighter than you would think.

    Buddy of mine had one of these back in the day, early 70s if I remember correctly. Somebody had put a 440 in it with dusl quads. Being a Sport Fury it had the beautiful tricolor interior with bucket seats, console with the rear seats having the bucket seat look. Beautiful car. One day he came by my place with a couple of friends and wanted to "show" me something. I got in the car and he main rag a we drove a mile or so to a few blocks from the city limits where the approach to the cross street was pretty steep. About teo blocks from that he slowed down because the light at the intersection was red. "Hang on a sec" he said as we creeped along in first gear. Then the light turn green and he floored that big 440. I don't know how fast we got going but when we hit that approach we literally flew over four lanes and crunched down to the suspension bump stops the other side. I told him ne was crazy and he took me back home. Not to long after that he windowed the block. Never saw the car again

    Just blown away at the attention to detail, craftsmanship, and fortitude. A five-year build! Gotta wonder if you at some point you wanted to toss in the towel. I could go on and on about this beauty. We had a '64 sport convertible back in HS with the 361 auto. When I say we, it was friends pooling our funds so we'd have a weekend cruiser. It was no slouch and in pretty decent shape. Back then you could buy future classics for next to nothing. What a blast to drive. I'd like to know what your background was to create such a sweetheart ride. Also a line or two about painting it (garage)? This is my 1st experience with your site so I will dig a little deeper. As a lifelong Mopar fan, this was one of those often overlooked models if I am correct. Anyways, congrats on an A-One build. The only thing I'd change is the wheels but I am not a fan of any of the new ones. Really loved the ralleys like I had on my '65 Coronet.

I purchased it from him in 1974 for $100 when I needed a second car. I used it for a couple of years and sold it to a friend for $100. That old wagon would run like a scalded rat. At this time I'm building a '65 Sport Fury. Mine will be different than Steve and Trent's car, but I have some questions for them about their build. Would it be possible for you to pass this request along to them? Maybe they could PM me on my channel. I can also be reached on a restoration thread I have going on, here - www.forcbodiesonly.com/mopar-forum/threads/1965-sport-fury-restoration.44077/

      Steve likes his big bling wheels. We all got our preferences. I like to stay around 17 inches on most rides myself.

    • @AverageJoeHotRodShow
      @AverageJoeHotRodShow  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Modern cars are heavy. Heck my 1970 Nova SS weighed 1,000 pounds less than a newer Mustang. These were light for a vintage fullsize car by 200-300 pounds.

  • @dwaynelittle7839

    You should have left that car original. I don't like the way the dash has been altered and the original consule should have been restored to it's original version.. there's not a lot of them left anymore. Don't get me wrong wrong it's a beautiful ride but it should've stayed original

    • @AverageJoeHotRodShow
      @AverageJoeHotRodShow  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wheels and tires are definitely a subjective thing. I myself wouldn’t have gone as big on the wheels. For me anything beyond 17/18 inches is too much for large classic car. The nice thing about big wheels is you can fit big brakes, always good on a heavy car with a big block.
