The mixing complementary of magenta is green, not yellow. Actually, the bright magentas "contain" more yellow than the deeper reds and thus they give intense orange when mixed with warm yellow. I put "contain" under quotation marks, because it's more the other way round: Yellow contains red and green. A pigment reflecting only yellow wavelengths would appear very dark. The reason red doesn't mix brilliant purples is the fact it neutralizes the blue.
