Those grey swatches actually look really colourful in contrast to each other.
That is the subtlety of pitch and tone.
Too many artists achieve a middling result when the real challenge is high or low key painting and I have much to learn in this area.
Thanks for the video. You have a nice easy going voice with substance to your talks.

Just passing by to say the grays made with Cerulean Blue and Halloween Orange actually caused an emotional reaction in me. They are so beautiful... *--* It made me want to go running home to my watercolors and test them out until I get those colors...

The way he paints figures just blows my mind, I have his watercolor figure painting book after coming across it in a library and hes been a huge inspiration to me.

Don Andrews is a true watercolor master. If any of you get a chance, order his online course, Designing Nature, and his DVDs. They are the best watercolor painting instructions I have EVER had!!!

    - Ultra Marine blue + burnt Sienna 1:1 gives a beautiful grey for underbelly of clouds, rocks, streets etc.
    - Darken it with more pigments very useful
    - Increase pigment to black.
    - 4-5:1 AJ Cerulean Blue + AJ Halloween Orange= silver pewter grey for clouds.
    - Add more AJ Cerulean Blue to mixture it'll give a beautiful cool grey/blue complements the shadows of anthing white like a blouse or house.
    - Add a bit of Halloween orange gives a warmer grey nice in warmer paintings like tropical

You're right about grey playing well with vibrant colors. I had just done a postcard "doodle" with crayon box colors. My student grade ultramarine and burnt sienna was brownish but a bit of cerulean produced a good grey. The grey did indeed improve the little composition. I had never thought about grey as the complement of color. Thanks!

Loved this demo on greys! Mr. Andrews makes a great demo and his painting. When he dipped his brush full of ultramarine blue into the burnt sienna it made me cringe a bit. I wouldhave used a separate brush so I didn't get blue into the sienna. I guess I'm too neat:)

Is brown another form of gray to complement the RBY spectrum of colors? I've been studying Walt Disney and their color schemes, and Ocres and browns seem to be the complement to their Magentas Cerulean and Chartreuseeseses! Am I hallucinating or does what I am asking make sense? HELP!

What is your opinion of Cretacolor WC woodless pencils in the 72 color set??? Can't a person just grab a neutral color and have at it...Surely there are other modes of grey that can neutralize a background isn't there? And if it isn't the right red, does it really MADDER? Ha Ha!
