This must be one of the best cars Mercedes makes right now. It's essentially S-class comfort for up to 5 people but without the exterior bulk of the S-class, and still more exclusive than the E-class. And that engine is just so effortless, perfect car to go cross Europe with.
I just couldn't not believe how quiet it was at 255km/h. Amazing. Over all Mercedes got it self put of the ditch as in the end of 90s and beginning of 2000 they really went bad with the quality. Now loving nearly whole Mercedes fleet:) amazing review as usual.

Sorry lost my thread.Yes big performance improvement .BHP up about 80,but torque up also about 80 n/m and it`s the torque that counts in sheer grunt off the line and powering out of corners and roundabouts.The 350 was good to drive but this 400 must be even better.All undertaken with a luxurious ride.Great car
The front has a hint of Shelby GT about it, hate the rear end and I agree with another person's comment that it looks like an Insignia on side profile. At least the drive chain and interior are good.
I think your main impression from the quietness of the engine comes from the well-isolated body of the car and not the engine itself. I have heard the car being floored right next to me and it sounds quite noisy (as a typical diesel really). Anyhow, superb drivetrain, as you said!
I'm not sure that new hybrid or electric engines could reach this kind of Diesel engines in therms of smoothness, Power, efforthless expression of high performances.... We'll see in the next ten years. I still buy Diesel

340 hp from a 2.9 diesel. must be pretty reliable (i bet not) since toyota pulls out 300 hp from a 3.3 diesel on the landcruiser - and that's more of a torque engine. 2:53 - the only incredible combination is how this car will be worth 10k Eur in 4 years' time. a wonderful oligarh mobile for the inconspicuous european patriots that keep us under american occupation.

Old CLS exterior + new CLS's interior and drive train = perfection

Only in German highways you can reach such speeds, in other Countries it is illegal just like in US, Canada, Japan etc.
The ONLY minus is that it looks exactly like a CLA. Seen dozens and still have to lool closely to differentiate them.

Design really improved compared to 2nd CLS series, 1st series is the purest. Still don't get these shoebox dashboarddesigns of Mercedes though.
