- From her gradual ascent to stardom in the 1930s to her death from a drug overdose at age 47 in 1969, former vaudeville baby Frances Ethel Gumm, aka Judy Garland, endured a string of personal and career ups and downs that continues to color her reputation as an icon whose tragedies outweighed her triumphs. This TV biopic, based on the first half of daughter Lorna Luft's book Me and My Shadows: A Family Memoir, attempts to humanize Garland's legend by presenting the singer/actress' story from an insider's point of view. Tammy Blanchard plays the young Garland, an MGM contract player with an overbearing mom (played by Marsha Mason) who helped push her daughter to stardom -- and, along with studio boss Louis B. Mayer (Al Waxman), into a lifelong addiction to booze and barbiturates. From her early performances alongside Mickey Rooney to her breakthrough role in The Wizard of Oz, Life With Judy Garland paints the performer as a sweet kid who just wanted to please her mother, especially after the death of her gentle, beloved father (Aidan Devine). Australian actress Judy Davis takes over as the grown-up Garland as the film traces her five marriages, exile from MGM, countless film and stage comebacks, and crippling addictions. The film's final section concentrates on the home life of Luft, her brother Joey, and their half sister Liza Minnelli, as the kids and their broke mom moved from one hotel to another and Luft nursed Garland through depressions and binges.

Despite everything that happened to her, she tried her best to stay positive and get through her troubles with a smile. Bless that woman for her optimism.
You really believe that? I mean it’s cool, and I don’t doubt that she laughed, and believed what she said here at times. But if she saw the world that way all the time or even the majority of the time, she wouldn’t have spent her life as unconscious as possible. It is exactly the sort of thing People who struggle with addiction and mental illness say when they are good mood, and is very unlikely to be a stable or consistent state. And yes I know she started drugs early, and it was gonna be an uphill battle for her. I’m not trying to criticize, but pointing out what we all know, that she didn’t manage to conquer those demons. She was a performer and knew what to do or say to make you (audience/fan) feel the way you do, and herself as close as she could feel to be “loved“. That’s what she primarily wanted, as we all do. And sadly, just like her feeling loved, what she describes here wasn’t likely to be a consistent thing. Otherwise maybe she would’ve had a better chance with her mental health and addiction issues. Life doesn’t have to be all tragedy for it to still be tragic in some ways.
1chienandalou I agree with both of you, and yes, your right about a person that struggles with addiction...I am one. That’s hard to admit, but it’s true. I’ve been clean for four year’s, and I struggle every day, some more than other’s. If I was an entertainer, and also still dealing with the struggle, I would’ve said the same, probably mainly, because I wouldn’t want people in my business like that. Being that she started so young thanks to her mom, she probably died not really knowing her true self, her real identity, and personality. I hope not though.
cici moore I agree with you. I don’t think she knew who she truly was. She could only relate to others in what they could do for her. She didn’t have a chance to fully mature, even though she grew up too fast st the same time. Most people think she was abused by her mother and others, maybe she was, we don’t know. I think she was allowed to do what she wanted to at a very young age without considering how it would affect her later on. Children can’t make career decisions.I think she also had a way of talking to move things in her favor. It seemed to be the nature of her mental disorder. She couldn’t take responsibility for her own actions. She drove herself to her own demise sadly. I don’t think she wanted to die and didn’t think she would, but it had gone too far.

If it was that easy, "just listening" then we wouldn't have rehabs we'd have talk centres for addiction. Don't blame the victim, and that's exactly what she was. A victim of her circumstances, a child-star thrust into amphetamines and into continuing when she simply couldn't. Until it was her entire persona, that she thought she was nothing without showbiz. Because, perhaps, that's the only time she ever truly felt loved.
Fun fact: When Meryl Streep won her Emmy for Angels in America in 2004 she beat Judy Davis but said of her on stage that nobody put a better performance on screen than Judy Davis in Life with Judy Garland.

It's crazy how talented this woman is! She has Judy's mannerisms, her talking voice sounds just like Judy, & when you watch the scene's of Judy's most famous performances it's literally like watching the real Judy. She didn't act like Judy she became Judy Garland. Love this biopic so glad I found this. RIH beautiful angel the world lost one of the most talented women that's ever walked this earth. No one since Judy could ever compare to her. Her voice was so so special. I watch her famous performance when she sang over the rainbow live dressed as the bum & I still cry. The emotion she exudes & when I see the tears roll down her face I always get goosebumps. She definitely had some serious issues but she still to the end gave everything she got. Gone too soon.

I can relate because I have disability and need extra help and my mother hasn’t been the same since my grandparents passed away. Her mental illness has gone down hill really quickly and you can’t even joke with her. She sometimes does act like Judy and it’s scary for my dad and I to put up with because it’s only us two. My sister is married doesn’t help much.
I can relate as well. I took care of my mom for about a year. It was tough!

My grandsons mother and her mother died of drug over doses two weeks apart from each other. Now I and my husband raise him. Wonderful boy he is. Drugs are such a problem for so many.

Judy was fucked up from the start now that I look back at this movie. Everyone around her wasn't concerned of her well-being except her children, particularly Lorna. Everybody else was just worried about getting their piece of cash when it came to Judy. It actually breaks my heart how she relied on Lorna to look after Joey because she knew she wasn't capable and strong enough to. Show business can make or break a person. It was definitely Judy's downfall.

BlazinBritBrat: I've often thought the same thing...Where the heck were her sisters? I can only speculate that, once she was able to get away from her overbearing Mom, she steered clear of ALL family. Also, this particular story was written (originally in book form) by Lorna, so it kind of makes sense that we see Lorna as being the main "helper" to her (since that's naturally how Lorna remembers it).
When my Dad died, it was SO odd to hear my own siblings tell stories about some of Dad's adventures (he lived a very colorful life) - As I don't remember many of the stories they swear are true. And they, in turn, think that I make up some of the memories I have about Dad.....My point is, that even if people are in the same house at the same time, kids tend to remember events much differently from each other. It's so weird how that happens.

She just had the misfortune of everyone around her (except her father who died young) including her mother trying to cash in on her voice to the point of drugging her as long as she was performing and producing cash. Even when she had no money she never tried to use her children as cash cows like her mother and studio did to her which she could have easily done with Liza since she did have a great voice and wanted to be a "star" This is probably why all her children still spoke well about her years after her death and loved her so much. She had good intentions and a good heart but her upbringing ruined her good judgement always thinking she was less than anyone else and was loved less than anyone else.
Children who have been beaten, starved or worse still say they love their mother, it's nature over nurture it's not an accomplishment it's an embarrassment to motherhood. Alcoholic, drug addict emotionally and physically unavailable, no food in the fridge, trying to wake a drunk to ask for lunch money, HORRIBLE. Using your children as pawns in the game of divorcee, sneaking out of hotels where your mother owed thousands of dollars, Yes by all means lets give her the mother of the year award.

The day of Judy’s funeral in NYC, was the day that the Stonewall riots started between the gay people and the NYPD, who were as homophobic then as they are racist now...(certainly not all of them, but definitely a fair share). Having talked with many of my gay friends about them adopting the rainbow as their symbol, after Judy’s funeral and the riots ended, I was told that Judy became a gay icon, because like Judy, gay people back then, felt and were, rejected by the majority, having a sense that there was no place for them to just be accepted, just like Judy’s life story.

The "Carnegie Hall" sequence (13:30) is truly INSPIRED, since we have very little of that performance on video and Judy Davis does an absolutely WONDERFUL job of mimicking Judy's actual vocals. WOW. And, just for the record, Judy Davis DID win the Emmy for her performance in this role (how could she NOT have?).
I know this comment is super old, but Judy Davis wasn't singing... That was the actual recording of Judy Garland's Carnegie Hall performance with Davis lip synching to it. But if you're referring to her mannerisms, then you're correct! Davis did a flawless job of perfectly emu

Show business fucked Judy over intensely but I do gotta say after watching this biopic, the love she had for her kids was truly unconditional. And I think it's so great that her children, even today, only speak of how great of a mother she was. I think that was because unlike her own mother, she was never mean and nasty to her kids despite what she was put through all those years. To me Judy Garland had a great hear and pure intentions. It was what she was put through starting at an early age that made her judgment not so great and which ultimately lead to her death. People using her for a check is what made always feel less of a person in my opinion and she just wanted to feel loved, and I'm actually happy that she got that from her children through it all.

Allison Pill did so much with her small part as Lorna Luft ,it was hearbreaking to see her stand up to her monther,and refuse to be around her for awhile. I went through something similar as a teenager with my alcholic mother. It came take almost a lifetime to overcom the fear, guilt,saddness and pain.God bless Lorna for writing the book and producing this Tv movie. God bless Joey and Liza,too!

She finally got that Oscar this year, thanks to the wonderful Renee for her portrayal as her in the new movie, ‘Judy’. I think this movie is the better of the two, but both were very well done. At the end of the day, nothing will ever will able to do Judy the justice she deserves. She is far too rare and one of a kind for anything to even meet that, she will always be remembered and loved till the end of time.❤️

What else was she, basically? These actresses show more talent, pizzazz and beauty for that matter than Ultimate Munchkin ever did.
No matter what they went through and no matter their troubles the love between Judy and Sidney never left their hearts. A man that truly loved the mother of his children, even after their divorce he still took care of her in his own way. The children cared for their mother because they were brought up with love, she didnt toss them aside to work, she didn't want the worst for them, didnt want them to suffer the way she did, despite her addiction and them seeing it day in day out they knew how much she loved them, I'm sure they had amazing times with their mother that we didnt see not just the hard time portrayed in the film. She was ruined by fame, we have seen many celebs go down this path and tragically lose their life in the same manner. It's all down to money and celebs are used to gain it. We see the lights and action of celeb life, it all looks fun and great, see all the fake smiles, see how much money they can spend, but money dont buy happiness and we dont see behind the scenes or behind their closed doors. I have a couple of actor friends and I have seen them struggle just trying to find their next job because once they've been used and spat out that's where they're left until a lucky break comes along. This was a fantastic film and will will hopefully see it without it being in parts. Great job to all the actors/actresses they were fantastic, cant knock them for that.
True you could clearly see the love between them all. I do think Sydney Luft was probably her best husband and father to the children. It was sad when they divorced, but I also think she was probably hard to live with.

Whilst she was in concert i London my father worked with her in the orchestra - a big show Palladium or something. For all the talk of pills and booze and bad behaviour, my father for a whole month said she was the most professional woman he ever worked with. He said she wore slacks and a jumper, perched on a stool and tapped the music out on her knee with her finger. She sipped water from a cup. She never complained if someone played a bum note, just raised her hand. And when the concert finished she said goodbye to the whole orchestra. Later he worked with Lulu who complained bitched, threw hissy fits and would only sing in one key. She made the whole orchestra miserable and to make things worse would only play them a third of their salary. They had to sue for breach of contract. My father couldn’t believe it. He said ‘Do people actually like this girl?’

Thank you for your remarks. I have watched her movies over and over and I tell you no one could sing and dance as JUDY did especially in movies from ‘ages 16 to 29 . She was always doing one show or another. Sometimes more than 4 a year. She was super human and the greatest star of her day. Ann Miller and many others loved her and talked about her great talent. She may have been late on the set but she didn’t need a lot of takes and so the filming went quite quickly. I
I think GOD finally said “You have had enough little girl. It’s time to come home. As long as her movies and shows are watched, she will stay alive. I only wish that we can dwell on her amazing talent and preserverence. Her goodness and love for others and how hard she did try.

I swear, I've come back to this movie about three times and each time I am astounded at the attention to detail (especially since it's a made-for-tv movie.) The casting was spot on and the acting was superb.

I was skeptical about seeing this movie, but it just made me love Judy more, even if it wasn't all true. Its 1.20am. I stayed up to finish watching. The recreations of the costumes and movie sets were just great. So glad they dubbed with Judy's own voice. Woulda been awful otherwise. I am 25 years old and Judy is my all time favourite artist and performer. I love you Judy, RIP. P.S. I cried too.
I feel so bad for her kids. And at the same time i feel so bad for judy too. That studio tricked her into thinking those drugs would help her. Its very sad. The studio made Judy's childhood and her children's childhoods hard. They didnt deserve it. I hope this would never happen again. Marvelous movie, thanks for sharing it.
Hope all you want but I think we all should care and pay attention to the people we are around and help or get them help over and over again until it sticks!! Such a beautiful woman who only lived twenty years after contract at 13 yrs.old. So scary out there in the movie and music industries, they just hide it better now.
Tara Fitch Really it was her mother trying to live life through Judy. Same with Michael Jackson. These parents ... they just go too far. And once you're the standout talent, forget it. You're doomed! It's sad but true. And they always start so young. Less resistence because they have no understanding of much at that age. Very very upsetting.

and her daughter really needed her blessing, to tell her it's okay, that she loves her and wants her to be ok, support her and reassure her. i totally feel for judy, what happened to her was beyond disgusting and she did not deserve an ounce of it and i can see why she clings to her daughter like that and felt betrayed, but we cant ignore the kids' pain in this too. as lorna says, its something she does not want to be inherited down and judy would agree. she became the cycle breaker. this started with judys mother (an enabler) and then mgm.
I feel a connection with Lorna. I didn't experience all she did but my mother was on pills and drank a lot. She was diagnosed with bipolar and depression. She's better now but my child hood was all bout survival because my dad always working and my older sister would have to cook for us and help us cause my mom would be passed out in bed from her pills. I'm glad my mom is better now cause she is able to lead a better life for my nephew and so he doesn't have to see what she was like before.

Whenever I hear about Judy Garland’s story it breaks my heart. And to hear what her children had to go through. My dad is an alcoholic, and I’ve had to put up with a lot of his drunken episodes. He is a secret drinker and lies all the time despite me and my mum having caught him on several occasions. I’m so thankful I have a strong mother to be there for me. But I still love my dad. He isn’t perfect but he does his best. I’m not making excuses for Judy but she was a really damaged person and was taken advantage of all her life. We should remember her for the icon and legend she was

I actually understand Lorna crying so hard after telling her mother she was doing what was best for herself. My own mother had a fit when I told her I'll be moving away from her. She made me feel awful.

The IRS screws so many...I really felt for her in that struggle when they garnished all of her wages on that show. I'm 47, I thought Judy was older than this when she passed away. Judy is just another victim of Hollywood. They tell these stars they need to be prettier, thinner, work harder, and when they do that, they destroy the person behind the actor. The studio, her mother, and all of the other people in her life never cared about her, only the money. Judy was a means to an end, and that's why they never attempted to get her some real help when it was apparent she was sinking. It's sad as this still occurs in the industry today.
When I listen to Judy sing it makes me forget of all of the sadness and suffering she endured in her short life.

Sid was in large, awful to her. Of course his daughter (the maker of this and original author of the book its based on) isn't going to add the abuse and taking of her money, exploitation etc, at least not in large part, not only because she obviously wants to protect her father's image and doesn't want to hear about that kind of thing, but also because she was a toddler/if born at all when the majority of it was happening.

How sad that successful, talented superstars like Judy Garland, Doris Day, Debbie Reynolds and Liza Minnelli (ironic) marry weak men who leach off them. It happens over and over. Sadly it seems to be a natural law that Givers attract Takers. As women are conditioned to be Givers, they are often prey to all the Takers out there, especially in romantic relationships. unfortunately judy was constantly searching for her father in men. so much so that 3 out of the 5 men she married turned out to be gay, just like her father. the other two gave her the illusion of safety; she felt protected in their company. unfortunately they used her and abandoned her just like everyone else in her life did. luft invested the most into her because he was dependent on her for money. its true he got her the deal for 'a star is born' and her palace performance, but he got just as much out of it as she did. and he gambled away millions and left her in debt to the government. judy never experienced a healthy relationship so she never knew what to look for.

Acceptance, appreciation, commendation, validity, confidence, or whatever else you can name that blossoms from being loved, are not easy to self generate. That desire, or need, for love drives many to do things extraordinary to feel it. For many, love just does not come in this life. Yes there are takes and other willing "to give" what is desired. . . and take all they can instead.. The desire to be loved, is too great, for most warnings. Love is far too valuable and cherished.

That was an extraordinary movie. Judy Davis was glorious portraying a larger than life performer that was one of a a kind. She really got into the persona and mind of Judy Garland. It would have been unforgettable to seen the real Judy Garland back in the day.
With everything Judy went through, I’m glad she was able to find some happiness in her kids, especially Liza, who, no question, inherited her mother’s great energy and talent. Not only that, but her kids were loyal to their mother. ❤️

During filming "A Star Is Born" she was completely clean of everything, but since filming fell behind schedule they gave her pills to take. She was clean AND THET MADE HER TAKE PILLS! LIKE WTH!

There body absolutely craves and lives for the drugs and the brain goes in to severe withdrawal if the chemical it was used to receiving for years and years is not ingested. And it was a stigma to be sent to an institution at that time for help in detoxification. She was given "uppers" to wake her up from the "downers" that the studio (and her own mother) shoved down her throat to help her sleep. She was a tragic victim of the studio system, with no support system whatsoever.

Judy and Frank even had a brief love affair during the 1940s. He would visit her in rehab. Judy and Frank were far more intimate and shared a far deeper bond than he shared with Grace. So it doesn't make since that Grace simply being "connected" to Frank would earn her an Oscar when he was much more deeply connected to Judy and had much more complex history with Judy.

Interesting from Lorna's perspective, This sad tale of what predatory show business practices can do to priceless talent hits all the notes. Davis is astounding, if introduced too soon in the storyline.
