Never had a mullet. I purchased the new '88 IROC (305, manual, t-tops) when the '79 camaro that I had been driving for nine years was totalled. I looked at a 'vette, but couldn't justify the price difference. I still look forward to bringing it out of storage every spring and the fun of driving it. Plenty of torque, hugs the corners, ....

    I bought a 1984 Z-28 brand new. It had a 305 4 barrel. In 1992 I swapped to a 350 TPI. Yes i had a mullet and wore parachute pants. I owned that car for 16 years.

I loved my 305 tuned port. It was a lot of fun.

I have the TPI 305 in mine and I find that people think there was only one 305 in the 3rd gen. You'll hear them say "it has 'the' 305" but there were always 2 or 3 different 305 each year with very different output ratings that grew almost by the year. A 145hp LG4 car from 1982 isn't in the same league as a 230hp LB9 car from 1991 but people generally think of them as the same.

Bingo. The Foxbody guys are REALLY bad for that. Just lack of knowledge. If they didn't know much about them or pay any attention to what was really going on, they just put all 305's in the same basket

@@dagwoodz28 Mustang guys often don't know a lot of things about their car's history. Like the Fox body having a 110hp 4.2L V8 they used to compete with the 145hp LG4 in the eaely 80s. They're funny like that.

Just to add my $.02... there were different exhaust and gearing options with the TPI 305. The VERY BEST 305 TPI car is a G92, 5 speed, with the N10 code dual cat exhaust with 230hp and 3.42 or 3.45 gears (depending on year). Race that against a 350 TPI car with the 2.77 rear end.....and the 305 car can actually take it in the quarter. But if you add the G92 option to the 350 car, you get the 3.27 or 3.23 rear gears (again, depending on year) and the 350 car will beat the 230hp, 305, G92 5 speed. There were soooo many different options with these cars. They should have just made ALL IROC-Z's performance oriented.

I have a bunch of videos on the channel of my 230hp 5.0 G92 Camaro. It shocked a lot of 5.0 Mustangs back in the day. They always expected to beat it because they were used to beating the 170hp through 200hp LG4, L03 and LB9 automatic models. They just couldn’t understand why this one was faster, because unlike GM which had multiple versions of the 305 that ranged from 170hp to 230hp whereas Ford had one 225hp 302 across the board in all 5.0 Mustangs, automatic, 5-speed, same cam, same H.O engine, same 2.73 or 3.08 gears. GM had many gear ratios just as they had many 305 versions, gears from 2.73, 3.23, 3.42, 3.45 and the old L69/G92 manual cars could even get a factory 3.73 gear!

Another factor to remember about the TBI is that they all came with a peanut cam which was very anemic when it came to performance.

The 305 TPI cars with 5-speed had a more aggressive cam. I have a bunch of old videos on the channel of my 230hp 5.0 TPI manual 5-speed “G92 code” Camaro with factory 3.42 gears smoking a 5.0 Mustang GT and an LT1 Camaro. Not all 3rd Gens were created equal. That’s a subject I can get deep into lol. I actually wrote multiple blogs many years ago on the subject. GM’s LB9 Tuned Port G92 engines were strong little performance engines, equal to Ford’s 302. The 305 had a smaller bore but a longer stroke. They were almost a total square engine (equal bore to stroke) and had bigger valves and better flowing heads compared to Ford’s 5.0 H.0 but the biggest hindrance for the LB9 was the horrid exhaust manifolds which really hurt performance. Ford used actual tubular headers from the factory which helped their poor flowing E7 heads. Ford also had a bigger .444 lift cam compared to GM’s .430 lift cam (5-speed G92 cam, the automatic models had a smaller cam) oh God here I go getting off target. I get all excited talking shop and get scattered all over lol. I love chatting ‘80s and ‘90s era cars.
