    As a little boy I loved the memories of the couple of times that a helicopter instructor took me up in the old Bell Aircraft Model 47 -G2 and one time he did an auto rotation landing 😁👍

    During the early 90's I worked on Porsche and about two blocks from the shop there was an aircraft instrument company. One of the people that worked there flew a Bell 47 to work when the weather was nice. I always stopped what I was doing to watch him fly in and land or take off in the evening. At the time I was deep into flying RC helis so it was a big treat to me.
    I agree with the other poster. One of the coolest helicopters / flying machines ever built.

      Darby Heavey MH-6 is the best but I might actually be able to afford a 47 and that makes it the “cub” of helicopters and I must drive forward until one of them is in my care!

    The first aircraft that I ever got a ride in was one of these.
    The pilot did what I can only describe as a full throttle lift off. While my dad held the top half of me out of the door like I was going to fall out 😂😂.
    It is one of the best memories I have with my father. And I was forever hooked on flying after that.

    Most iconic scene of this bird is in the episode Life Time where the gang are met with a wounded GI with a lacerated aorta. I know the helicopter was like 20 seconds of scene in it but the sound was so iconic and the episode was epic literally Hawk had to operate this guy within minutes and BJ struggling to get an aortic graft from anybody to save the wounded GI was amazing in itself.
    This, the Huey and both the Chinook and Sea Knight have the most iconic rotorblade sounds ever.

    Our Air Defense Artillery Group in Wilmington, Ohio had two of these birds in the early 70’s. Lots of flying by the seat of our pants with an attitude indicator and a magnetic compass. The rotor blades were wooden and would absorb moisture in winter. Great aircraft for a new pilot to really earn his wings.

      “Attitude indicator” is what my wife has! You’re right about the wooden blades. When it was raining and couldn’t fly on those days, if we had to park up outside we’d go and untie the blades to rotate them once a day to keep the accumulated moisture even. Not doing so made for a very uncomfortable few minutes of flight!

    I flew in one of these on the 4th of July when I was a kid in the 1960s. I think it's amazing that helicopters have really not changed that much since they were invented. Look at TV series from the 1970s and the Bell helicopter look exactly like the new ones. I'm sure the glass cockpit is new but the external design has not really changed at all.

      Yeah it's kinda crazy how we basically perfected helicopter technology by the 50s/60s/70s. Everything we have nowadays are basically slightly updated versions of designs from those times. Even military grade helicopters where they for example still use Hueys, Cobras, Blackhawks, and Apaches full time

    Don’t think this was ever posted anywhere but I’ve read about a pilot who autorotated the Bell 47 to a landing then lifted it, turned it 180° and landed it again! I believe it and I want to see it!!!!

    One used to fly the underground lines in my township in NJ during the 70s. It was flown by an X Vietnam Vet - never got shot down, till some stupid kid hit it with a baseball as he was flying overhead...sigh...but loved waving at him.

    As a young boy I was given a ride in one in Florida. No door a just a belt to hold me in the seat. I bet if you look at bottom of the seat you still where hung on for dear life. It was like seating on a long pole in a wind. That was a very long time ago but I still remember it like it was yesterday.

    Back in '84, we had a Bell at Malibu station. I remember when MASH units use them to medivac wounded in Korea. Funny thing was, our pilot was 250#. A 300# Deputy wanted a ride. the Bell would bounce on the skids to get airborne. It could barely handle the weight of those two.

      BS. The Bell 47 can easily handle 550 lbs. If it was "bouncing on the skids" it was for some other reason, not because it was carrying two fat adults.

      Corisco tupi: you might be BS. If this is Malibu California and at a "station", (Fire, Coast Guard or Police) then this is quite realistic. The air temp could be over 32c and any extra equipment could easily max out the weight allowed.

      shazam: that is questionable. MTOW is a constant; it does not vary based on altitude or temperature. The bell 47 MTOW is 2,950#... even with a quarter ton of passenger and pilot there was a comfortable margin over a ton. It is possible, but not probable, that there was and additional 2,400# of equipment on the aircraft. There must be some other explanation for the aircraft bouncing on the skids.

      + Billy Sargent: kind of, maybe... The power available decreases with altitude / density altitude, unless the engine had a turbo charger. Wind gust could also have been a factor in the case sited above.

      Lift is affected by air density which is affected by temperature and altitude, I think perhaps that’s what you meant by power? Good thought about wind gusts though. I would imagine and airdrome on the California coast would definitely be subject to gusts. I thought it sounded more like a transitional lift/air cushion ground effect issue during taxi more than anything weather related. Just a pilot with a bad habit of not getting enough altitude, then there is always the mechanical factor - the H13 was famous for shimmying & gyrating at low speed/altitude. All that mechanical crap flapping around; no hydraulics, The whole thing always was kind of loose and shaky.
      Have you ever read chickenhawk by Robert Mason? One of the top tier Vietnam helicopter memoir novels.
      Always did wonder what it would be like to have a turbo supercharger on that lycoming engine... or even install a modern gas turbine Like the Robinson R66.

    I had a chance to fly a Bell 205 and I have never flown one although I know aviation. I picked it up high enough to get spotted on radar by LAX when we had down time hanging iron due to heavy fog. Guy told me I was a natural. I was floating on air when I stepped out of that machine after my few hundred feet of lift.

    Got my rating in a 47d1. Wood blades. Franklin engine. Autogas. Flew great but a oil spilling mess to preflight.

    I had a Kawasaki KH4 made under license to Bell similar to the J model it was a great machine. only problem with it was people didn't like the noise in built up areas so it was not commercially workable for us

    Had to put my headphones on for this one! I love this little chopper! I was surprised by how much power it has. At start up it reminded me of a souped up racing motor. What engine is in this thing?

      Usually a Lycoming flat-six, mounted vertically; about 180 to 300 hp, depending on type variant.

      Charlie Marren. All bell 47s have centrifugal clutches

      Yes it has a centrifugal clutch. It starts to engage straight away and if you did not nothing the mass of the rotor system will cause the engine to stall. Immediately after start you have to rev the engine to keep it from fully engaging to get the rotor rpm up before you can then reduce the engine revs and let the clutch fully engage.

      I was wondering what or when too. I think the long close to ground speed build up and moderately fast climb was "it". If they wanted to do that in a more spectacular way they should have thrown the passenger out. I fly in a mates Bell 47 regularly and with just the 2 of us it can liftoff pretty briskly with a lot less build up than they did here. If we put someone in the middle seat as well it makes a HUGE difference. He also only warmed it up for a minute of less, that's not long enough.

      There were two cuts in the video after the engine start, so we cannot know for how long he warmed up the engine prior to take-off.

      Thanks corisco, you're absolutely right. I had to have another look and pay extra close attention but you are correct.
      It still wasn't anything "special" about that takeoff though. I was wrong though and am happy to admit my mistake.

    What special take off ? It was a take off followed by a climbing pedal turn. Crop dusters do far more dynamic and
    much "harder" manuevers every day. Skilled pilot ? Of course he's a "skilled pilot", or he wouldn't have a license. A pilot is considered "skilled" the moment he successfully completes the training and solo flight, and gets his license. And you call it a Bell 47, which is probably technically correct. However, this aircraft is painted to resemble the military version of the Bell 47, the H 13. Wether it actually is the military H -13 version, or the completely civilian Bell 47 version is anyone's guess. Methinks, though it's painted as an H 13, it's probably a Bell 47, so you're probably correct in calling it a Bell 47, even though it's painted as an H 13.

      Sorry. I agree with Roger. That wasn't anything to get excited about. Pretty normal except he should have warmed it up for longer and should have lifted much sooner. He was taking extra risk skimming close to the ground to build up more speed just so he could lift a bit faster when he eventually did.
