    I think the Bell 47 has become my favorite helicopter, and my favorite Flight Simulator model as well. M*A*S*H for the win! :)

    In 1980 when I was 22yrs old, my first job flying a helicopter was in a Bell 47G4 along the north shore of Lake Athabaska, west of Uranium City, Saskatchewan. Retired 40 yrs latter in 2020 on the AW139 in Abu Dhabi.

    Doing basic training in a R44 now... as soon as I have my PPL(H) i would love to do the type rating in a bell 47 because it's just awesome.

    My dad flew a Bell 47 D model all over the Canadian Arctic in the 50's. Later became a Tech Rep for Bell Helicopter. He loved his choppers!

    I flown an Chinook H.C at 50K meters elevation, then I opened my eyes, I was on my bed..... unfortunately.

    I have the world of respect for helicopter pilots. I got an Atpl and I'm so used to the b737-800 that for some reason I convinced myself that flying anything else would be super easy until a friend of mine invited me to join him in a Bell 222. It humbled me very quickly. This type of flying is an art, not a skill. Lol!! Great video

    I felt I was in the cockpit with you! Excellent instructional video. The bell 47 will take some beating for its dragonfly looks, and the legendry glass bubble. What a chopper!

      Emerald Outdoor Productions one thing I have wondered. So I get the mechanics of a helicopter for the most part but how does the clutch system work between a piston engine and the rotor. With turbo shafts the engine and the rotor shaft are separate systems where the engine spins to a certain rpm at which the thrust can start rotating the power turbines and get the rotors spinning but I never conceptualized how the internal combustion engine is able to engage the rotor and overcome the great forces without burning the clutch mechanism or stalling the engine or having some other faliure?

      @@santinojozefmiller7721 I had no idea this pin was ever commented on. I guess better late than never.. RPM is controlled by throttle on the collective. There is no governor, so it's controlled manually from startup to shutdown.

    Curious how the clutch system works on this Heli, I read its centrifugal, yet the operation does not quite seem it.

    Thanks for the introductory lesson! Before I leave this life I’d love spend time flying helos. I took one lesson back in the early eighties in a Hughes 300. It was a tough machine to handle, but I loved every minute. It was far too expensive as a hobby, and a bad time to try and make a career out of it. I already had my fixed wing license which I received in 1980, so that had to suffice. But who knows?
    BTW, I’m a fifties kid who came to love that distinctive whine of the Bell 47. All the traffic reporters in NYC flew them, and that wonderful sound bled into their mic.

    Ya gotta love the '47s. N2802B was written off, damaged beyond repair, October 5, 1966. Bell 47s and Hiller 12s will be around forever...

      Do you still operate the 47s? I always wanted to fly one and I never had the chance. I've flown Hiller 12 C and Ds but not the Bell. Some day!

    Probably the best small helicopter made (beats hell out of those crummy Hillers). Proud to say I was crew chief on a couple of these whilst serving in the US Army in Latin America

      My grandfather was an engineer/machinist at Bell Aerocraft in Niagara Falls. He had a lot to do with this 47 model if not mistaken. Mainly the model before this but i don't recall the name.

    My dad used to fly Bell 205 back in his Air Force Days and I’d usually visit his hanger. Among 205s, there was this Bell 47 sitting at the back of the hanger, decommissioned. I used to hop into the copit and play around with all those instruments. But I never had the idea of what switch does what. I was around 4 and it was like 25 years ago. Now thanks to you, I get to know what those are and really reminds me of my childhood days.

    I flew some 20 hours in a Bell 47 G-2 back in the 70s with a friend who had one. I ended up being a fixed-wing pilot (helicopter lessons were way too expensive for me) but always loved helicopters.

    Overall a good video.. you have a tendency of over explaining things... you went on a bit about the radio switch it actually confused me with your up and down thing.. also you didn't actually show what you did to start the aircraft.. you said "here we go" yelled "clear" next thing I knew it was running.. no clue how you did that. Remember, most of the people watching are inexperienced, or non-pilots with a very keen interest in these aircraft, slow, simple, and direct explanation is the key!
    Love the bell 47, hope to get some flight time in one soon! Thanks for the video!

    This guy has a very interesting accent. He is a German that lived in Britain? From Louisiana and spent a few years in the Bronx? I can’t identify it.

      Close. I believe: (country) German, some schooling in England, moved to South Dakota and now in the Southern U.S. (But don't quote me as it's been a while)

      This particular Bell 47 has a starter button on the Pilot's collective. Other models, such as the D-1 will sometimes have a starter pedal on the floor.

    Purpose of friction collar??? so controls aren't so easy to move without effort?????

      You fly with the frictions off. The friction is to hold the controls when you do not want them to move. In this helicopter and others with hydraulic controls. If you were to let go of the cyclic with the friction off (pilots are taught not to let go of the cyclic when frictions are off). The cyclic would fall/move in any direction which makes the main rotor move in the same direction as the cyclic which makes (or tries to make when on the ground) the helicopter to move in the direction of the cyclic.

    When I got my pilot's license, I was taught that during engine start or shutdown, avionics master should be off. This was because engine start/stop can incur electrical interference (spikes, surges) into the electronics and cause problems.

      The G-2 is normally started either by key or a button on the pilot's collective. This particular one is on the collective.

    i do not own a heli, or a airplane, however i watched this video and now i know the starting procedure of it. it is nothing compare to the starting procedure of my kia. wasted 15 minutes on it just because was interesting to see.

    They're pretty stingy with instruments on this model...they don't even give you an artificial horizon? I guess if you have to fly through a cloud you have to make do with that ball in a curved tube instrument?
