  • In this video I'm setting up Geoff's Yamaha Pacifica - one of the most common starter guitars and one of the most often left behind in teenagers' bedrooms when they've gone to college and the dream of being a rock star has faded... Much overlooked and often unloved, this is a very well-made guitar. In this video, I tackle all the typical things needed to turn it from a tired, unloved cast-off into a capable instrument with low, easy-to-play action that stays and plays in tune.

This one's mine, after Sam's set up it plays really well and sounds better than it did from new. I've never had any fret work done so the wear probably indicates how much I've favoured one area of the neck over the last 8 years. As someone said it is quite a narrow neck which for me makes for very comfortable playing, it does mean there's not much room to spare when playing some chords.
I wouldn't get rid of this guitar, especially now, it's a great value trusty workhorse kind of instrument, the new nut's certainly made a big difference too. All in all a good result.

I got a red one, I like the slimmer neck, better than the squire I had. 😊

I just traded for one of these, I really like the neck, I like the looks too, great value for what it costs. I’m having to set the the bridge saddles on the high strings a little. Good tips , I’m just learning set ups after playing all these years. It’s kind of fun and satisfying. Thanks Sam.

I literally just picked up a 112v barely used for a song. I'm using it to teach myself how to do a "deeper" setup than I've done before before I flip it or donate it to a kiddo who needs. Frets, nut filing, replace the pots and switch, etc.
It sounds really really good, and I get why they have a following. The finish is great too. I'm really impressed by the humbucker since splitting it has almost no volume drop. I'm used to a huge drop. No idea how Yamaha did that.
I'm also weirdly impressed by the plastic selector switch.

ahh yes the pacifica. They are very solid and very dependable guitars, I see the lower end models very commonly with music students who don't want to take their prized guitar with them on public transport where they are knocked around on the journey to and from college or university.Yamaha Pacificas are also really good mid priced guitars these days, the top of the line models the 611 and 612 think they are called, have all the extra bling and bells and whistles you expect from a mid range guitar. locking tuners, maple veneer tops, rosewood fretboards, Tusq nut, duncan pickups etc.

The nice thing about Yamaha F style guitars is that parts are readily available for upgrading them. And because they're pretty cheap, but solid, they're excellent for making a fully custom and unique guitar. As long as you like the neck, it could be the only guitar you'll ever need.
Also, for reference, the Graphtech nut for a Pacifica is PT-6041-00.

I'm glad I'm not the only person (as a guitar mod hobbyist) who has to plan guitar painting around the weather. This is why I look forward to the warmer days of summer, and particular, days with low wind. I've got three jobs waiting on good weather (and getting moved into my new shop).

Good luck setting up your new workshop! I had hoped that the large spare room (ex-kitchen) that I have here would be a spray space... but in reality it's in a crappy state of repair and totally open to the elements. I would have to build an entire room-within-a-room (at least 12' square) complete with air conditioning, venting, lighting, heating etc. That would run to several thousand GBP... there's no way I could afford that. So I remain hostage to the British weather... which is why I go on about the weather all the time ;-)

I picked a PAC112 up on Facebook marketplace for $50. It needs some rust cleanup and I painted the faceplate until I replace it when I replace the bridge. But it's still playable and a great cheaper guitar. I may buy another.

    i own a Pacifica, it's a lovely guitar - although the neck's quite narrow?

Blood on the Fretboard. Great new song from the next big thing. I dream about guitars, I'm not well.

Do you have an exhaust fan for the paint booth?

No unfortunately. I tend to spray and then vacate the space. The building is draughty enough to clear the vapours between my spray sessions.

Great review however you made no mention of the pickups ?? height / adjustments??

    • @SamDeeksRelovedGuitars
      @SamDeeksRelovedGuitars  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I never tend to…. But I ought to say why I don’t, so apologies! Pickup height is entirely subjective: the only guiding rule being the following:-
      • The closer the pickup poles are to the strings the greater the output but the less the tonal ‘dynamics’ (and vice versa).
So all I can offer is for you to see what you think for your taste and playing style. The same general advice - ie try various settings and decide what suits YOU - also applies to neck relief, string gauge, action height, fret gauge… pry much everything to do with guitars!

Many thanks for explaining; I have just purchased a Specifica and was curious to know your thoughts; its a right handed version which I will be converting into a Left Handed !!; any tips on this would be most appreciated !!!@@SamDeeksRelovedGuitars

@@julianmclean3869 With a strat style bridge you have no problem reversing the intonation pattern of the saddles for a left-handed guitar. Obviously, reaching the controls as well as the tremolo arm isn't so easy, but Hendrix managed it.
The key thing in a right-to-left flip like this is the nut. Recommend you buy a left-handed Tusq nut suitable for this guitar... Unfortunately I don't have a record of which Tusq nut suits it better so you'll have to do some internet research. When you find a recommendation, if it's a right-handed Tusq nut it will be stated as PQ-1234-00 (for white Tusq) or PT-1234-00 for black Tusq. When you find the correct Tusq nut for right-hand then you need to go search for the left-handed version which will have the following format: PQ-1234-L0 (note the 'L' in the last 2 digits denoting left-handed). Or PT-1234-L0.
      Hope that helps!

And don't forget that set up is very subjective too; for some people the way it is 'right out of the box' is what they like and there's nothing wrong with that. A lot of people want something lower than that and I cater for that :)

The customer must have felt like they picked up a new guitar. It not only looked brand new, it would have played much better.
