    If an Olympic gold metal is really just silver with a gold coat, is a silver metal just bronze with a silver coat? Then what's in the core of a bronze metal? Cream cheese? Mashed potatoes?

    It's reverse from what most people think. You bite it to confirm it ISN'T soft. People used to dilute the gold with lead, making it way weaker. You bite to test that there's no lead in it.

    I was always a silver and gold buyer, especially 100oz silver bars, but platinum is ridiculously low in price compared to gold. I'd be buying the rarer 1oz platinum bars instead or silver bars. Never buy precious metal coins(unless you get an amazing deal), always buy bullion which is much closer to the spot price. I expect a pullback in metals(short term), then load up. :-) Just the fact that the gold bars being sold on Ebay are only 8-30 dollars, that should tell people something. Bars that are stamped can be fairly hard from the compression, but cast bars that have been quenched, also are fairly hard. Nice gift the gold crowns. $200 gold value.

    The process of heating and then cooling metal to return it to a more malleable state is called annealing. Just in case anyone was wondering. It's something I learned on my degree when we did fine metalwork.

      @callmesleeper 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well. You could technically lay much more(or less) force behind the center punch depending on your weight/strength. Because you still push on it after it has "fired" (bottomed out).
      I.e. Aluminium is quite soft. And I have made various "depths" depending on how I do the "punch maneuver".
      Makes sense?

    Cody if i eat gold will it replace the iron in my body with gold?

    • @mysterioushooded
      @mysterioushooded 8 ปีที่แล้ว +55

      i dont think so, iron is specifically used in the haemoglobin part of you red blood cells, which allows oxygen atoms to attach to them. I dont think gold can replace these iron atoms, but if you could, that would be a great form of savings! lol

      If your iron is replaced with ANYTHING other than more iron, your body is fucked. Gold is actually one of the only metals that your body doesn't reject or react badly with if ingested in pure form. It's also great for some implants for this reason

    I've heard it said that biting into gold comes from times when Pb was used as a counterfeit. Meaning you bit into it, and if it was dented considerably, it meant that Pb was the core of the bar.

  • @lonewanderer3603
    @lonewanderer3603 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    2 reasons I know of as to why pioneers bit into gold coins. One you covered, as it was a simple way to test if it was a plated piece of base metal. The second reason was to mark their coins so that if they were stolen and recovered, you could say, "Well I know it's mine because you should see 2 little bite marks on it" in a certain place. A poor man's version of engraving their mark.

    The same alloy will have different properties depending on if its certified and if its cheap. The cheap metal doesn't have the crystal size and direction controlled and the crystal size isn't consistent. The cheap metal will have different amounts of cold work from one end to the other, pieces of slag, stress, etc.

    You only briefly mentioned the metalurgical reason that people used to bite gold. When alloyed, it is harder, much more than most commonly available metals of slightly lesser density. Gold coins would normally be a slight alloy (enough to make them fore durable and a bit less dense)to the point that it would be possible to make a lead core with gold plating, which would be much softer. If a gold coin bent or was otherwise soft, it would have been considered fake.

    why not, I understand biting is very old primitive method, in school we learned about Brinell test and Czech invention Poldi Hammer which is based on Brinell test, it is simplified and practical method used in Poldi Kladno steel company, this simple tool holds together ball made of very hard material and known reference metal, when you hit it with any hammer, same force acts on both materials and then you simply divide diameter of dents in tested and reference material... same principle as your biting, but you get quantified result, then you can compare the ration with table of previously measured metals and you can also guess what metal or alloy it is, not super accurate, but very practical and fast method for hardness measuring

    It wasn't the biting of the gold, it was the bending of a gold coin while holding it in your teeth. This was it's original purpose, for tradesmen to ensure the coin was genuine when no other means of testing was readily available.
    Now that you've softened the gold bar to the same softness as an old gold coin, try and hold one end in your teeth and bend the bar. Just slightly, that's all that was needed back then.

    I always thought mock-biting Olympic (world championship, Commonwealth games, whatever) medals looked kind of cheesy. Are you testing to see if it's solid gold? It isn't. Never was. so lead is toxic because the body mistakes it for a neurotransmitter. but a lot of people are saying that its not as toxic as people think. that makes me wonder if it was only such a big deal when dissolved in gasoline because finer particles are more readily absorbed into the brain, but large pieces can only dissolve off the surface resulting in far less lead getting into the body. what do yo guys think?

    May I add, it's a common misconception that historically, people would bite gold to see if it is genuine. The misconception is that if the gold dents, then it is genuine. But the truth is that old coins were often counterfeit by using lead cores and plating them with gold. The recipient of a coin would bite it to see if it was lead, because a lead coin would malform much easier than gold. So, biting dents does not a gold coin make.
