    1. Define the task - uncertainty around task = more procrastination
    2. Break large task into substeps.
    _ For me, what does 5 seconds of progress look like? _ Hypothetically if I were to get started what would that look like. Smallest step is opening the page.
    3. Environment
    - He can get 10x the time of work done at desk than at home. The quantification is useful for me.

    I find that the main contributor to my procrastinating at this point in my life is the fact of being in lots of physical pain. I am 57, and my job is very physical. At the end of the day, I am a knot of muscle cramps, sore and tired, on top of knee and back problems. All I want to do is veg out. I do manage to get some things done, like finding the time (once in a while) to stretch, and I am a student, and I get my work done. But the 10,000 other ambitions I have languish. Mostly.

    I actually bought the book because of your recommendation and one of the best turning points of my life ever. The main point of the books is we procrastinate because stress, guilt and shame make is suffer. And procrastinate is a quick but short term way to end our suffering. So right thing is compassion to stop the negative associate with the work.

    Every youtuber who talks about this all make videos with bait that they have "the definitive solution", as if they are likely the first or only ones who have finally cracked it and the viewer has just been so lucky and blessed to have stumbled upon their channel with the life-changing answer. And then this happens: The "solution" is basically all the same tired talking points that all the others offer with the same baity notions, and like all the rest are either 1. Drawn out long enough for ads and sponsorships, 2. Incomplete in their consideration, 3. Poorly communicated in some way, 4. Overly scripted but still misses major points somehow or 5. All the above. I got half way through this and correctly predicted this to be just another one of those videos, but in a "trust me bro, let me speak at ya with my face right in the cam so I look more personal and real about it."

    When "checking" a book off the shelf I often separate the references pages from the rest of the book. If it is about roughly 1/3 references to 2/3 material in thickness I give it a peruse, scan the Table of Contents, fast scan/fan the pages, and make a decision. If I choose against getting it, I make a point of memorizing the cover or writing down the title and author. Something made me pull it off the shelf to look, so I'll do a quick online research session on it - and maybe return to buy it. For those I choose, I carefully scrutinize the references notes as I reaad. Sometimes I'll head to a reference and check. If an author takes a quote out of context, and blatantly so, I'm probably done with the author. NOwadays that involves a quick, "I'm disappionted," email or message to them, not a whiny socmedia post. For all the books I go through come copious notes that I review periodically, add to a Google Drive doc, and share with peers.
    You videos seem to fit smoothly with my own, problably nutsy-gefooly, way of choosing and consuming material. Thank you!

    Video Games are one of the worst forms of procrastination because it makes you feel like you're accomplishing A LOT! Because your character is progressing or YOU are progressing in the game. AND this feels exactly like days when I've been VERY productive and got a lot done. There's literally NO DIFFERENCE. BUT what you realize later is that while you feel like you got a lot done, you actually accomplished NOTHING in real life. Absolutely NOTHING. AND the age old excuse of "well I could sell this account online" is bunk cuz 99% of gamers never do this.
    The same thing goes for other hobbies.
    However don't get it twisted, hobbies are great and essential for a balanced life. So as long as the gaming is kept in proportion to other things, great. But it's all too easy to retreat from life into games that give HUGE dopamine hits on a regular basis.

    • @curcumin417
      @curcumin417 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great insight. Video games are an escape that burn up energy which could be cultivated for real goals. At least with other hobbies like working out or playing an instrument, you get some tangible fruit of your labor, unlike games or movies, which are more like addiction.

    • @jontnoneya3404
      @jontnoneya3404 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@curcumin417 - Yeah I sort of agree with you. I mean I get what you're saying and it may not seem like you get fruit from playing games but you actually do. BUT it's not really tangible.....more intangible.
      With hobbies like woodworking, you do get some tangible thing that you've built. But with gaming you actually get knowledge of the game and you improve problem solving skills. If a person is playing a first person shooter, they're also getting better hand/eye coordination which definitely helped me with sports like tennis and baseball/softball. All of these things are VERY helpful in real life. If a person is working in technical jobs like IT, playing games actually helps with social interactions. VERY MUCH the same way that knowledge of golf is essential and very helpful if you're focusing on business.
      Also as someone who's an alcoholic that's been in very long term recovery, I only sort of agree that games are like addictions. They can be but other addictions destroy lives and I don't see that happening as often with games and certainly not to the depths of chemical addictions. It's common to say people are "addicted to a game" but I tend to disagree. It makes games seem WAY more destructive to a person's life than they are.
      Games can also be HUGELY helpful to help people avoid engaging in their addictions and regulating their emotions. Honestly games have helped me far more than they've hurt me. I'm forever grateful to game makers for helping me deal with life. It's hard for me to overstate their benefits to my life. seriously.
      Anyways just thought I'd add some clarifications. Cheers.

      Ehhh, I get that, but it's also totally wrong. He's never shied away from tangents or holistic thinking; this is just another example of his channel addressing the big picture of people learning Python and implementing it in their lives. For a lot of people, procrastination is a much bigger impediment to coding than math or logic, for example. Hence, it's totally on-topic. Can it apply to other aspects of life, too? Yep 👍
