I remember this game clearly. A fantastic day and great spectacle. NZ provincal rugby at its BEST. Hard men smashing each other up front with skillful backs tap dancing out wide. Man I wish rugby was still played like this.
Nothing will ever compare to that otago side my God they had a stacked side and provincial rugby was taken so much more serious back in the 90s compared to now... Oh and congrats otago on again beating Waikato on the weekend and securing the log O wood for the summer awesome result
just heard my uncles name aron hopa never really new him but from what i heard he was one of the best number 6 in his time then a few years after he tragically died after diving with a a couple of his mates winch were all blacks he had a bright future getting looked at by selectors for heeps of team for the rugby world cup leaving behind a loving family
Otago had great players to choose from in the 90s. People used to sit at Otagos tryline for the 1st half then move to the other end of the field at halftime. Thats how dominant Otago were at home.
I was at this game and it was so freaking awesome! The "We won the final!" chant was started by my uncle and I remember some guy afterwards yelling at the top of his lungs "Boohoo Mooloo, Otago screwed you!' Best day/night of my life!
My uncle kicked us kids all out of the house when we started getting cheeky and counted the scores during this final. He is a waikato diehard.lol Real provincial passion back in those days
Me and my Saffa mate watched this at my uncles house in Wellington on the way back to Hamilton from first year uni in at Lincoln. As Waikato boy we got stuffed by the Otago mercenaries.
Kronfeld was immense in this game. We had a solid and well drilled forward pack, a brilliant halfback and backs that could run it. Otago was great at this time.
It was the best Otago side ever back when Otago actually produced all blacks (9 all blacks and 3 future scottish caps) . Hiding a rotten core , the rugby union was going broke and financing said players well beyond their means.

This is when rugby was rugby. Sadly it will never reach the peak and ferocity it was during this time.
Great players, great spirits, great team songs!

I remember this game as a 6 yr old. Feels like yesterday.
R.I.P Aaron Hopa
I was at this game as a 15 year old from Central Otago, such an amazing day! Great to see a good vid of it!
I remember watching this game at my grandfather’s house in Otago. One of the great days...god bless. Rugby was venomous back then! Look at the fans.
Was at that game, when rugby was great to watch and drew the crowds at the house of pain. Otago you good thing's 👍
Wow. So so glad we were there in the Railway Stand. Lovely weather, good music, good beer, good score!
There’s alot of NZ Legends in that game! Was good to see Glen Jackson score one for Waikato! 😎👌🏽🏉
I was there on the terraces that day to witness a great Otago win. It was an unusually warm day for Dunners. Atmosphere was electric.

@@jamesgolder5365 NPC didnt finish in October back in 1998 . I think it ended in August. Tri nations were done in July.
Shit yeah those highlights were better to watch than today's rugby the atmosphere at that stadium is beyond amazing
Brought back great memories watching this. What a star-studded Otago side

Awesome game and epic epic effort Otago
Full house at Carisbrook. Those were the days!
*And* cow bells were allowed at the ground.

Kronfeld didn't last the first half
Do you by chance have the full game? I'd love to get a copy.
now thats footy at its finest, gooooo oooootttaaagggooooo
Glenn Jackson looks like he is 15 there ha
I WAS THERE ! ! !
Good old hardened rugby back then! Today, it's all rules and time wasting!
A once powerful and star-studded Otago team are now shells of their former selves
Yea not many locals in the Highlanders unfortunately.
Love the Mexted commentry "Counter-attack from the hooker on his own 25. 30m to run". So many things wrong with that statement.
Best. Day. Ever.
Wow..look at the crowd and the fact that all blacks were playing nowadays the NPC is nothing more than a development league for super rugby
what's the name of the ending song
Southern Man
Kronfeld didnt play..... He went off injured after 5 mins....
The Southern Man
Ruebin Parkinson got done for kicking some guy in the face at a fish and chip shop

wearing my Otago 1998 Npc jersey is enemy territory aka Tauranga
Shit sorry it was Romi Ropati
Its too bad Otago.are now broke and a glorified club side now.
waikato so unlucky that day
Otago purchased all their players in. Randell should have been playing for the Hawkes Bay.

Its amusing people thought John Leslie should have been an All Black haha
Why?
He was an amazing player who definitely deserved it.
That Leslie guy at inside center was fast
so awsome that cold and decretped hole Carisbrook is destroyed
A lot of butthurt comments from you bro. Still mad after all these years. Lol
