  • The Honda City iVTEC 2020 gets a new DOHC engine that is more powerful, yet more efficient than ever before. And like every City before it, it is the benchmark in its class. But can the all new Honda City 2020 hold a candle to the original Honda City VTEC 1st generation? In this video, we put the new 5th generation City up against the original gen 1 Honda City VTEC from 20 years ago - first in a drag race, and then getting behind the wheel to see if it delivers the Thrill of Driving.

When I started off as an automotive journo the Honda City was THE BEST CAR you could buy, a year later the VTEC came and we went BANANAS. This is the car that made us life long fans of Honda engines. This is the car that defined our generation.
What’s your memory of the Honda City?

I remember the first time (2004) I saw 2 of these nice City's in Bangalore.
One was pretty much stock looking except for these huge Racing Rear Trunk spoiler with Blue lights and with a loud exhaust. So everytime that guy passes by, I used to run to my balcony just to have a glance at it.
The next one was pretty nicely modded gloss red hot City with cool lookin' alloys and squarish cut on the Bonnet with a glass covering that shows the nice chrome plated intakes.
Few years back when I had been to Kerala, I got to see a couple of City's and not even one were on the stock condition - Deadly lookin' damn hot they were. I could see a huge fan base for City there.

I don't know about the 1st generation but I have seen it . it's a beauty . When I was in class x I saw the 3rd generation ❤️ and I was like I want this car , damm I did not have the money to buy it 😅.. then the 4th gen came it never look as good as the verna in any comparison video but when you see it on actual flesh you can understand how good it is built and that look just grows on you and it is also way way better than it's rivals . Now I am 23 and now I am employed . Honda launched the 5th gen city and I am planning to buy one ... Can't wait .❤️ . Earlier when they launched the civic arguably the best looking car in india right now but they caged that 2ltr vtec monster in a cvt cascade 💔 which ruined their "Epic is back " tagline . But with the new city specifically the petrol mannual surely the "The icon is back" ❤️

Mayne!! The first Gen VTEC still gets my heart racing. How old was I when I used to see advertisement of the red hot City VTEC in the daily newspaper? Perhaps, 16? Perfect age for that pure adrenaline rush. It’s so nostalgic. I still have the newspaper cutting of the Red hot city when they first introduced the VTEC. And, boy-o-boy, it was directly touted as a sports sedan. Then I saw it in metal at my bicycle repair shop and my jaws literally dropped. Honda was right! It INDEED was a sports car with such a fat rubber. It was purely out my league.
Then came the dolphin model which, again, blew my mind with its spaceship like design and steeply sloping bonnet. It was unlike any sedan in the market from E-class to Esteem.
Honda, certainly, was way ahead of its time and extremely creative in those days. That charisma is somewhere lost in the newer models.

But I've owned every City leaving aside the I-vtech. The new 2020 city is hands down the best and most refined city I've ever driven. I just wished they had a stiffer chassis and better handling though. It doesn't do the engine justice.

@@sirishch it's actually been quite effortless. Infact We still have it. That car has never given us any major issues. Returns 15/kmpl. You're not going to win any drag races with it but I wouldn't exactly say that it's a slouch. The gearshifts are butter smooth. I would say that It's an ideal city car, as the name suggests, but i would personally not prefer taking it out for a trip to the hills or even on a long highway run. The I-DSI just lacks the punch and dynamics. The steering response isn't too enthusiastic either, but if you're an enthusiastic driver yourself, or just a hot blooded college kid, you'll find ways of still still having quite a bit of fun with it. My dad actually prefers it over the Diesel City we have, since he drives both. I on the other hand love the interior and exterior look of the Fourth Gen City, and am willing to live with the unrefined engine noise, hard gear shifts and heavy clutch. If I had the option, I would sell both and get the 5th Gen any day.

This is a great video man, a shame this car doesn't get the same love i see from India over here, in Brasil this car is mostly ignored by the performance crowd, as the automatic version is the one mostly sold and it is not very good at performance due to the bad gearbox ratio, and it is more known as a economic normal city driving car, however i have a 2011 manual City (which must be the 3rd gen in India), and this thing is a beast, even 2.0L cars struggle to even keep up, and only the best 2 liter cars can win. I hope when the 5th generation hits the streets of Brasil, it comes with the DOHC engine they are teasing around here, i personally prefer the naturally aspirated in this car, even my City keeps up well with the VW 1.0L turbos, which are very popular around here nowadays ever since they where introduced.

By today's standards no one is speaking about reliability. Everyone wants only gimmick features in a car. Honda City as a car is built really safe. I has also got 5 starts rating on a crashtest but people just tell that Tata makes the most safest car in India. Remember this people honda does make safely build cars and also more reliable cars.

You guys are lucky to drive such enthusiastic cars of that era in today's era. In Delhi NCR you can't drive a 15 year old car which hurts the most and especially when it's all clean and tidy car and hasn't been done 1lac kms. These NGT norms sucks. Atleast they should conduct a fitness test for all 15 year old cars and approve the one which passes the test but no they just want to put such beautiful cars of those era in junk yard where these cars are ripped apart.
    A HARSH GROUND REALITY.
Maybe you guys should put some limelight on this topic as yours is the channel for pure driving enthusiasm and also showcase cars of those era because lot of people are suffering from this rule of NGT 15 year old vehicle order. I myself is suffering from this issue. Thank you.
