Dom Harrow and Sub Viren
I feel like Viren is a man that wants the best for his people. What sets him apart from Harrow is that rather than keeping his people safe through working towards peace with his adversaries. Viren wishes to crush any who currently wish to do his people harm by any means necessary. That obviously isn't diplomatic, and seeing as how the elves are far from pure evil, it isn't ethical either.
... They literally performed a fucking Trail of Tears and forced the humans into the fantasy-equivalent of the Death Valley. How are they not pure evil?
@@ixarofthebargains493 If they were PURE Evil, they would have massacred all humans, slowly torturing them to death, before going on to conquer the entire world, turning it into a blighted wasteland of nightmares and toxic lava pools, and all the while they would be cackling like maniacal cartoon villains.
As they currently stand, I see them as no better than real life humans, being capable of both good and bad deeds, of both hate and love, which makes them morally grey, not some 'Pure Evil Dark Overlords of Destruction and Chaos', or whatever.
+Ramon Barrera Viren is definitely a lot like Magneto. He is a "good guy playing for the wrong side." He is driven to extremes, believing that only these extremes are what keeps humanity safe. He sent those phantoms to assassinate the royal rulers of the other human kingdoms because it was an extreme way to manipulate them and make them realize the danger humanity was in from the magical creatures. He didn't look for a diplomatic solution with trying to find a way to save everyone from starving to death because he believed by doing so, it wasted valuable and precious time where more people could die. . .His actions still wound up getting people killed.
With marching into the Sunfire elves territory and waging war with the dragons and the elves, he was making a "pre-emptive" attack-kill all of them before they killed humans. Killing Zym and robbing Zym of his powers was an extra incentive. Viren believes only he is capable of leading humanity to a true safe path. He believes that everyone who disagrees with his methods is against him so he will dispose of them however he sees fit. Anyone is expendable to those ends-even his children. Soren learned that the hard way, Claudia is neck deep in being manipulated and controlled by her father and she doesn't even realize it.

and so the 50000 in the other nation will not starve
Then when the time comes for the other nation to repay the favour they don’t and abandons Katolis which causes the other nations to abandons them aswell

Also when the Pentarchy declined to give their armies to Katolis and the Standing Battalion, He said " He has nothing left to lose" while pulling down the curtain of the Aaravos Mirror. And I am pretty sure he knew that Claudia and Soren were still out there.

I think Viren is going down this hole with Aaravos. Like others said, he wants to do what he feels is best for his people, but he’s also very power hungry and knowledge hungry, so he’s susceptible to Aarovos’s temptations. I do like that he was very uncertain about what Aaravos was trying to do. He had strong reservations, because he’s not evil to start out with. But like so many villains, he doesn’t start out evil, but he’s very drawn to power and using it for what he sees as good. I like how nuanced his character is. I hope the the show keeps him in a gray area as opposed to just making him a straight out villain.
I love Viren so much as an antagonist. I can't bring myself to full-on hate him, but there's also no excusing his awful behaviour. Exactly like you said, he's incredibly nuanced. He's a very flawed human, but human nontheless. I love that so much.

I really hope they don't reveal to have it be that Viren was evil the whole time. I really like the idea of a man who just wanted to do what he thought was best for his country, not some wicked avatar of pure evil.

Same. I love how Viren is written in the story, because he's almost like a character ripped out of Game of Thrones. He's doing what he thinks is best for humanity and has an agenda to accomplish that. He's a rather morally grey character and that's why I love and the other villains so much.

Deep down, he knows he is doing selfish things, but he lies to himself with the hope that he can be selfish and selfless at the same time.
Best characters in the show, their relationship is complicated and so intriguing, I freaking love them and feel like a book could be about them for older audience because there's so much there :D
I love Viren and Harrow's dynamic, I really, really like Viren as a character, I love how non black-and-white, how human he is. An awsome antagonist. As the show progresses, you can clearly see Viren slipping further and further into the darkness he created himself, you can see the toll dark magic is taking on him. He's losing touch with his moral compass, he's willing to gradually bend the rules more and more in order to achieve his goals. He became obsessed with the task he lay out for himself. I believe he does a great job convincing himself he's in the right, justifying his action in his own mind. Finding loopholes around his conscience. I'm pretty sure he convinced himself that what he's doing is unselfish and for the good of the kingdom and its people, when in reality he is becoming more and more power-hungry and control-obsessed. What probably started out as a genuine will to do the best to help the dire situation became all crooked and wrong now...

@Instrumentality1000 I mean we can all assume that he really is trapped in his bird, and that he flew away when the kingdom got overtaken. We can just hope that he comes back and meets Ezrin so that we can find out if it's true or not. So stoked for season 4!!
Replying to this 2-year-old comment to point out that Rayla's magic wristband tied to Harrow's life falls off, which is all but the highest confirmation that he's bitten the dust for good.
@@pastadog5029 true but Viren also trapped all the elves in coins and as a result their lotuses sank. To be clear I believe Harrow is dead and it would be foolish if the writers brought him back for momentary hype.
This is just incredible!! I love that the voice actors have such complex opinions about their characters and their bond to one another!

Super late to this but I’ve been rewatching the show recently and have realised how complex Harrow and Viren’s relationship was. (I for one think Viren liked Harrow more than a friend but knew nothing could ever happen, however I know that is just an unlikely theory)
The way Viren was willing to do anything to keep Harrow alive and keep the kingdom.
They had a 3 way with Sarai one night and Callum was the result. Before Harrow married Sarai.
I wish Viren gets redemption arc

I think when Harrow dealt harshly with Viren by telling him to bend the knee and that he was a servant broke Viren. I think Viren saw them as friends, not as king and servant, and he was going to trade places with Harrow until that harsh moment, harsh to Viren. I think he switched Harrow with his song bird. He was sitting n his shoulder, and Viren did that out of spite was he had been hurt. The bird escaped, and I think that will come up again.
I'm pretty sure they were more than friends in the past. They relationship is too complex.

Heyo, suuuper late to the party, but I think Harrow definitely wouldn't have accepted. It goes against everything he stands for. But perhaps he would have treated Viren better knowing that... Maybe they would've parted on better terms... Man, that scene made me really angry and sad... Harrow was acting like such a jerk..... :/

I see where he's coming from, and he's right in that Viren's methods aren't exactly good, but at that moment it just seemed so over-the-top and unfair... Viren came to him to make up, even more than that - to offer his life in exchange for Harrow's (sure, Harrow might not have known about the last part, but that doesn't really change anything imo...). To let his oldest friend know he'll stand by him through anything. He tells him he sees him as a brother, and Harrow literally responds to that with: "You think you're special, better than everyone else..."?? And then just doesn't even let him speak and instead humiliates him, makes him kneel in front of him and then sends him away?? Man... I couldn't but feel really heartbroken for Viren. If that was to be the last day of Harrow's life, wouldn't you think he'd want to part on as good terms as possible with his best friend...? I'm not trying to say that Viren is a good man, he is delusional and power-hungry, but Harrow's reaction felt really uncalled for and broke my heart. If that really was the last exchange the two ever had, that's just such a sad and awful end to a friendship like theirs...... Feels shitty, man...
On a sidenote, I really love how non-black-and-white these characters are... none of them is perfect, but they all are very human. What a great show...
@@efoxkitsune9493 exactly!! i feel like the show could have played out a lot differently had harrow been nicer to viren. i think it could have prevented a lot of things, such as viren becoming so destructive and power hungry. i feel like a lot of his development came from him feeling alone in the world so i think knowing someone cared about him would have kinda forced him to think to himself about what would become of people he was close with.

He is ambitious, somewhat obsessive, and dark magic is clearly taking a toll on him, gradually corrupting him more and more without him evem realizing. Maybe his primary driving force in the beginning would've been grief instead of ager or something like that, but in the end of the day I don't think it would've changed anything significant. Viren is not a good man. Maybe he was once, but not anymore. He is corrupted. A little bit of kindness wouldn't have changed anything imo; he doesn't see himself as the villain.

Cable is quickly dying, and for good reason. An internet-based streaming service was the best choice.
The fanbase is also rapidly growing and incredibly active. I get more feedback and interactions on my fanworks than I have in any other fandom.

It’s not unpopular. The term implies that most of the people that know of this show’s existent dislike it, when the exact opposite is true for dragon prince. The real problem is that dragon prince overlooked; many people that Would be fans of the series simply don’t know it exists, or they do and it hasn’t occurred to them to give it a try.
Let's be honest.
Harrow listened to Viren and went for hunting down the monster for the heart and as a result, got his wife killed.
Harrow listened to Viren and avenged the death of his wife, as a result the elves are now after his life.
Of course he would disagree with Viren. Every single bad thing that happened to them concerning Xadia was all Viren's fault.
I agree with you about Thunder; but for the first, Viren came with this solution to solve a problem due to Harrow's blind idealism.
If Harrow actually listened to Viren in the first place, he would have turned the Queens away and focused on his own people. Harrow made the decision to sacrifice 50,000 of his own people, and Viren was stuck trying to clean up his mess. He also didn't listen to Viren when he suggested leaving the wounded behind which cost them precious time. Sarai was killed because Viren listened to his conscience rather than being pragmatic and went back to help the Queens. That was most likely Harrows influence. Harrow listened to Viren's creative solutions because they were convenient for him, but he never listened to Viren when it mattered.

I don't think it was harrow the made him snap I think it was the day he broke his family. I definitely happened earlier than that why else would Viren have a tendency to break the law I think it came from his urge to do anything(bad things included)
