Don't try this at home. Now i'm going to explain how to try this at home.
Ok i try it
You seem to have an infinite supply of barbeque igniters
the american walrus I scavenge things from old projects sometimes.
+NightHawkInLight can you use anything else because i dont live where i can scavenge things
+francisco garcia if you have a standard bbq lighter you can salvage its piazzo igniter
Maybe a hand guard to protect from burns next time?
Excellent video Ben! The best video response I've ever seen .. I love your quality!
This makes me so sad knowing that Grant wrote this... both of these channels played a massive part in my childhood and got me to try new things
Wow tkor
Why does this only have 9 likes
I've been watching your vids for years when your focus was primarily on creating those unique mortar shells. You've sure come a long way XD Appreciate the vids man, I've learned alot, Thanks :)
Me too. I'd love to be able to post like this all the time. I'll do my best to keep them coming.
Thanks! I finally got it to work! I had to squeeze the bottle to make the alcohol to a gaseous state. Also, another tip: cut out a 2 liter bottle and put it a little ways behind where you taped it to stop the bottle. Works pretty good! No more burned hair smell!!
I love that you putting videos out more recently
it seems like grant Thompson is going be huge on youtube. every good how to guy is sharing him. deserves it to, awesome vids
Why not make a kind of shield at the front of the launcher to protect your hand from burns?
This is a fine example of good home schooling. Everyone should know how to build detonation devices. You tube rocks!!!!
This looks like a fun Saturday project thanks!
17 years early, plus youtube and you would make my childwood soo much better
Simple but fantastic work.
Thanks for sharing.
It's been a long time hasn't it? Thanks for hanging around for so long!
Nice one! Super simple too.
Awesome collab!
Ethanol will work fine. Thanks for letting me know about the links, I'll check it out.
Thanks - I miss Grant. His channel has gone downhill since he passed. The only recommendation I have to improve this is to put the tape a little closer to the end. You're blowing out some of the unburnt alcohol by igniting it in the middle of the bottle. I made a pair of these over the weekend for my daughters end of school year party and built stands so they were not holding the tubes. It was a lot of fun! I didn't have epoxy on hand, so I drilled tiny holes and stuck toothpicks in an "X" shape near the end, then added some spray foam so the burning fumes wouldn't go down the hollow tube. It worked just as well, although it was a bit messier and took longer to dry. Epoxy would have been better if I had it on hand. 2 liter bottles hold a lot more evaporated alcohol and although I didn't have any for this party, I did this a few years ago and if I recall correctly, they had longer distance and made a bigger boom when launched. I'd also recommend making sure your hands do not have any alcohol on them when you launch them. Great video, and extra points for noting taking a 2 minute video and stretching it into a 10 minute video. I'll definitely be looking at other content just because of that.
Man I always love your videos! and im also a fairly new subscriber to The King of Random, hope you win the cookies!
Try fitting a funnel onto the pvc instead of the tape. It stop as the bottle from moving too far back and prevents burns on the hand
Isn't everyone just an alcohol fueled rocket?
I have seen bigger versions but I love this one for why it is small, very compact.
NIGHTHAWK! You aren't dead! Haha I missed you.
this was fun to watch! i really enjoyed!
You are one of my favorite youtubers. Keep making these awesome videos
Small, simple, and cool!
I started watching the king of random when he put the match box rockets along time ago and till then I still watch him its been like 3 years
It's simple.Thanks.I will try this
i am making the paper crossbow you have made as a project for my school.thank you for giving me ideas!
great to see another vid been awhile
the king of random is my favorite
youtuber
Nicely done,,, good and easy
That makes a really satisfying noise.
Cool, might use that as an igniter for our liquid propellant rocket motors
Good job!
Don't know why but I was having reliability issues using the 91% rubbing alcohol. Turns out a shot blast of Right Guard works almost all the time. less then a second for single pop bottles, about a second and a half for a 2 liter. These are even more fun to shoot at night as the bottle goes off like a flash bulb.
I also tried ether as a fuel but it is much more prone to being to rich to fire and when a good mixture is achieved, it doesn't seem to improve the shot. Aiming a deodorant can straight in the hole instead of shooting a stream of either just past the opening is much easier and reliable.
you got a sub dude. so cool.
Yes. I already have a video filmed with that design, but there are a few other videos I will be finishing first.
I have made the igniter and it seems to work fine but I have found it difficult to get the right fuel/air mixture and cause a combustion on a consistent basis. I have tried using just a little, using a lot, mixing a little, mixing for awhile but can not find the best technique to fire consistently. It has fired several times with awesome results but fails to ignite a majority of the time.
Any guidance/further tips would be appreciated :)
Does the percentage of isopropyl alcohol matter?
that vid is pretty darn awesome. the topic is called new pyro project on pyro section.
Thank you for this great video. My son and I made a successful rocket!
yes! under high compression and correct ratios of fuel and o2 the alcohol can be a very good fuel for combustion type motors, steam generators, and other items.
You have the coolest videos, I always get great ideas.
Thats awesome.
@Christian furger A two liter bottle with the same width of a regular bottle works good too!
You just won this competition...
Awesome!
Cool video man
I thought about that myself. Go for it. If I make a how to for the larger launcher I'll toss a little credit back your way.
Would a basic washer between the tape and the switch[or the bottle and the tape], protect from the initial blast from any potential flame back risk?
Great devices, keep them coming. :D
I always wanted to launch a water bottle into the darkness of space where none of my paper aeroplanes dare to go.
Dammit NightHawk! I was watching minecraft videos and now I'm back here?!?! All the Damn time!!
This is also awesome!
Wow! Please help students in their science projects. Keep posting please.
Done. Video is up. Can't link to it but search youtube for "Bottle Blast Off"
It's pretty impressive.
AWESOME!
7 year later I still sub and in love with his videos...
Same
Ingenious!
haha wow, i just realized Grant is up over 2 million subs! i first subbed when you mentioned him here and now look!
I'm guessing it would be very easy to install a guard to protect against the flames, as well as possibly increase the pressure behind the bottle?
So i could use nail polish removal? Im still trying but nothing works.. Does the position of the leads matter? Like i said on my other comment ive got the leads at the base of the pvc pipe, should they be right at the edge near the opening?
I just made this and used 70 percent alcohol. It works really well! I'm surprised how much energy there is in a tiny bit of alcohol.
Could be that your spark gap needs to be adjusted. Try bringing it closer or further apart and use the fuel mix that has worked best a few times to see if the new gap makes it more consistent.
the singed knuckle hair was a nice touch
Any store that sells parts for gas grills (Sears, Lowes, etc), should have them. They are the push-button ignition module, there are also battery-powered models available.
I work very hard to be sure that the things used in my projects are easily available, so yes, you can count on it!
kick ass idea!
I teach middle school Science and I really enjoyed this vid. I saw the one that detailed the build, and I've simply got to try this. I like that there is no release mechanism needed, and while parts are extremely hard to come by here, (Bangkok), I was glad someone mentioned using a BBQ starter, which are easier to find. I'll let you know how it turns out.
Great! Hope your students enjoy it. Beware of leaving any excess liquid in the bottles before firing, as it may spray out and cause burns. Have you seen these follow up videos? th-cam.com/video/wuz0curb_hg/w-d-xo.html & th-cam.com/video/jfIztG88tp4/w-d-xo.html
Yep, checked 'em both out. I'm leaving in a few minutes for a two week Xmas break, and I'm going to try and find one of those 'sparkers'. If not, and I must resort to buying a long-handled-type BBQ starter , could you do a vid about how to extract the spark unit?
It's very very simple to take the sparker out of a lighter. If you take one apart I'm sure you'll be able to figure it out without assistance. One note though is that they are not as powerful as the ones from a bbq igniter, so it will not be as easy to get the launcher to fire.
By igniter, I assume you mean the unit that is built into the BBQ? and not a hand-held, long-nosed lighter?
A bbq igniter is what I show being used in this video.
Just a question, are you able to fill the bottle with hair spray/Deodorant/ any other flammable gas?
this looks so easy to make.
love your vids
King of random freakin rules
Nice!
made one today, works amazing
Hey @NightHawkInLight Love your videos, you inspired me to enter my new hobby. Just a little suggestion if you are ok with it. Please add the amount of money you spent to make your projects in the description. THANKS!
nice. did that flying barrel video on APC forum inspired you?
here in Brazil is almost impossible finding those lighters, do you have any different ignition type?
this project is dangerous and should not be tried at home... so here's how to make it
can u please give me a link of where to get the ignitor i found one on amazon but not sure if its the right thing
It wouldn't be hard to make that a little 'safer' with a hand shield made from just about anything slipped over the PVC. Another great idea, thanks for this one!
i found an igniter online but the ends are put together into a little metal tab. would this still work?
When the zombie apocalypse somes, this will prove useful if you substitute the bottle with a sharp object with fletchings on it.
Super explanarions!!!
I added a few duct tape tail wings to the water bottle and glued a six inch bolt to the end of the bottle, and when i launched it, it got stuck four millimeters right into a wooden board! thanks for the video!
Awesome :D
Ive made a hand cannon with pvc pipe under this same principal. I`ve used butane and nail polish remover but none work. Do i have to use 91% alcohol?
Also: the electric lighter lead are a good 3/4 foot behind the pipe (closer to the base), would the leads need to be on the edge of the pipe?
Cool!
love that sound
I made a launcher for myself at home. I made everything to the exact specifications as you've shown in your video (except for the pipe being longer, but I don't think that would matter). Well, it doesn't work. I've tried a lot of alcohol and only a little. Should I try gas or some other accelerant? Any other tips/suggestions? PLEASE help!
(Also, a big fan of your videos. You do great work! (Being, video work and your inventions!)
FUCK YES! I love when awesome people collaborate!
"dont try this at home" *gives steps on how to make it at home*
Love your voice!!
You could use a funnel or the cut off top of another bottle where the duct tape is placed and tape it to the launcher to prevent blow-back when the alcohol is ignited.
works better with hairspray as the propellant. fun project
I made this....it's simple, awesome, and loud as hell!!!
very cool
Hey NightHawkInLight
I did similar after i saw your ground launched version of this . But added PVC coupler & 2 pipes instead of tape . so rocket can't slip past coupler , & grill lighter ( to be on the cheap ) instead of grill igniter . I had to tear apart grill lighter but save pistol grip part of lighter . add wires , & drills hole in lighter body avoiding spark igniter in lighter body , then screw through to attach to pipe .
Worked good , just fine .....thanks
Nail polish remover is mostly acetone, not alcohol. The leads should be running through the center of the pipe so that they make a spark right in the middle of the bottle.
