I worked one night at the Apollo as a security guard. I was completely by myself there that night. The Apollo supervisor was in an office in the building. There was one light shining on the stage and there I was, sitting on the right side of the stage all night. After an hour there, I went up the famous Apollo stairs to the other floors to see the different small dressing rooms. Then I walked down the same way Chris Rock walked down during the opening of his classic concert called Bigger and Blacker down those same steps that you can see on TH-cam. I imagined in my head the stars that had started their careers there like Mariah Carey, James Brown, The Jacksons, Aretha, Boyz To Men, New Kids On The Block, New Edition, Mary J Blige, Biggie Smalls, Whitney Houston, and many more. The stage is tiny people. I couldn't believe how small the place is. The upper level seats are like almost on top of the stage. The feeling artists must have with an Apollo audience must be nice because it feels so intimate being so close to the audience. Don't get me wrong. There are a lot of seats there. I would guess there were more than 1,500 seats there. But, the history I felt just sitting there as this white guy absorbing in that energy was incredible and I'll never forget it.

I had the pleasure of playing for Chuck starting at age 19. It was both a joy and a great music education. I have so much respect for him. Getting to hear that great voice each night was awesome,

I’ve had the pleasure of seeing Al Green once . WOW , what a show he gave !!! The one I remember is - it seemed to be more younger folks in that crowd than people in their 50’s and over. Sensational performance !!!
In 1977 I had a friend who had a limo service. He asked me to do him a favor. It was to pick up Chuck Jackson from his home and take him to the Ebenezer baptist church in Newark NJ. For all of us that were born in the 1950's, and remembering hearing all of those Legends on our "transistor radios" in the early 60's when we were kids, I remember what a thrill it was ! In 1983 I also had an unexpected opportunity in an unrelated job to spend 6 hours with Chuck Berry one on one with me in conversation. Yes, life has graced me in many ways. God bless all of them.

This is great! Al Green came to slay! Some of the greatest musicians in the history of Jazz are in the orchestra pit! They too were Apollo Legends. There's probably more legends in the pit, I can't see. Special mention: 2:32 I think thats Warren Smith (still alive and well) on percussion.

The Royal Theater was our Apollo, As we watched Chuck Jackson sing I close my eyes and visualize the last time I saw him singing @ the Royal Theater, He threw his tie into the audience and my cousin and I ended up in a pulling and screaming match with several other teenagers, well it was torn in 1/2, Lol we went back to our seats to enjoy the rest of the show, the Tams and Janette Baby Washington were also performing that evening, and she stole the show, She Got a standing Ovation...She even came back and sang another song, not too long after that the Royal was closed...Thanks for sharing this video, It brought back great memories.
It's awesome to finally hear someone mention the Royal theater in Baltimore MD and to explain it the way I did over the years "the Royal was our Apollo". My grandfather and his band played for all the acts that came through except James Brown and the Flames. Its great memories thank you
I met most of the acts that came through. They dined at the diner THEY called the Chuck Wagon all in the Pennsylvania Ave area good food too. This is my grandma Linda Barrow's memories she's using my phone😀
Im 61 years old, and I can listen to this and be this young 17 year old woman all over again, with my long hair🧙♀ and bell bottoms🩳, Large gold hoops in my ears💍, always had a warm smile to offer back then😀, Warm smiles in return, Man it was a beautiful time.💖
In those times Men and Women were Classy and Men treated women like Queens and women treated men like Kings. Everyone was was sharing and caring so much love for one another.❤
@@jeanettacarter3711 so sorry to disappoint you, women have always been at risk. Al Green got hot grits thrown on him for a reason. Each eara has had it's issues however "me too" came about because no one talked openly. The music is great however don't idealize these artist.
This is great " Music " you can't help but love it , I'm a little older in age however this is what I grow up listening to . Wow the memories of life gone by , family members that are no longer here it makes me very tearful and happy at the same time . The love of music and family. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
This is such a great video all God’s Angels just wish Apollo would do this annually for our many talented Singers such a blessing to watch God bless them all!!
Hi, it’s thanksgiving day, and I just stumbled on this nice video, holds many memories so along with thanks to God Almighty for health, strength, and a sound mind, I thank him for my family and all that I have today. And Thanks for these wonderful men who’s voices have made me smile today, I’m blessed.
I have wonderful memories of these songs from when I was a teenager. These guys are legends. I was raised in England and would hear their songs on the radio, we didn't have a t.v. so the radio was all we had to listen to great music. I'm loving this.
I feel privileged to be able to watch these wonderful performances on my television, but it had to be extraordinary to be there in person. I had never heard of Chuck Jackson, but I’m so glad I found this video. He has a voice out of this world.
How I wish there was an album (yes album) of these greats! All together! I’m a child of the 60’s. There was a black band who played in E.St. Louis every Saturday on State St. Amazing guys and this music. The best.
AL GREEN, LET'S STAY TOGETHER WAS ALSO RIGHT ON TARGET, THAT'S ONE OF MY FAVORITE SONGS BY ONE OF MY FAVORITE SINGERS, AL GREEN, I'VE BEEN ONE OF HIS BIGGEST FANS FOR SO LONG.
Great showmanship from each one. Well, Chuck Jackson left us just a few days ago. Yes a couple of weeks after the man who wrote the music to that song, Burt Bacharach died. Yes goodbye to both in February 2023.

Hello 👋
Come here woman
Not really knew how to treat a lady. Just as much abuse
@@ceebee8042 U got that right, they were abusive then also 😵🤐🤕
Amen, Amen!
Im 61 years old, and I can listen to this and be this young 17 year old woman all over again, with my long hair🧙♀ and bell bottoms🩳, Large gold hoops in my ears💍, always had a warm smile to offer back then😀, Warm smiles in return, Man it was a beautiful time.💖
Let's Stay Together...a national anthem to the most divine of emotions....Al Green in the white chair on the cover of the LP...
In those times Men and Women were Classy and Men treated women like Queens and women treated men like Kings. Everyone was was sharing and caring so much love for one another.❤
The white chair was a different album.
@@jeanettacarter3711 so sorry to disappoint you, women have always been at risk. Al Green got hot grits thrown on him for a reason. Each eara has had it's issues however "me too" came about because no one talked openly. The music is great however don't idealize these artist.
I moved to West 119 Street to be close to my second home! Miss it, but glad artists make more now. Love to Apollo!
This is great " Music " you can't help but love it , I'm a little older in age however this is what I grow up listening to . Wow the memories of life gone by , family members that are no longer here it makes me very tearful and happy at the same time . The love of music and family. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
