I continue to find it unbelievable that the company that installed this does not even know what they are doing and then leaves the people out in the cold without providing a solution. And that an external company actually found the solution quite quickly after so many years of misery. I may not always agree with Holmes but by involving the right people he provided the solution for these people who had been working on this for years and it is unbelievable that you have a guarantee but it actually does not matter, they do not fix it if there are problems.
I put a high velocity hydroair system in my old house. They're pretty good, if installed correctly. The one I put in was an UNICO system. I heated it with the existing boiler, because I also had an indirect water heater and another basement room with baseboard. It has A/C in it also. If the guys in the field actually knew the equipment they were installing, there would be less complaints. Love Mike and wish we had contractors and inspectors like him in the states.
Warranty programs are largely supported by builders' fees to them, so while they have a captive group of contributors, they also have little incentive to do anything for the homeowner, and enough incentive to be kind to their contributors. The programs are smoke-and-mirrors, claiming to be there to support homeowners, but you would practically need to be very tenacious with them, and possess a relevant engineering degree to be able to hold their feet to the fire in order to get any meaningful response from them. People should take no solace in warranty - if builders tell you not to worry, there's a warranty, that's still no reason to mess it up in the first place.

I have been a general contractor for 33 years. High velocity HVAC systems are really intended for older homes where the framing does not allow for larger duct. In your rebuild, using rectangular duct would have allowed you to have higher ceilings. I have installed combi tankless water heaters and never had the need for a holding tank. Your condensing unit looked to be within 5 feet of the property line. In my jurisdiction that would not be allowed. Perhaps a side discharge unit would have been more appropriate.
high velocity hvac systems by "HIGH VELOCITY" are amazing for new homes as well as renovations. They must be designed properly and installed properly. The system has amazing filtration, dehumidification and amazing comfort.
Now I understand my heating and a/c system. I will in 1,100 sq ft 2 BR/2 bath ranch style apt. in complex of 450 units. I love it especially my utility bills. It's heated using the water heater. Best part, my average electric bill is $35/mo, gas $70/month on budget. I have been here 3 ys and is the same cost. It's very warm in winter and cool in summer. I don't why this system isn't used more in larger homes.
Love the 1 5/8 studs. Love them for making soffit indoors. Also Chicago bar and zippy and laser level. Built thousands of them and fast and easy. I could build them out of wood but much slower and heavier

If you are having a "builder" build a home for you, you need to appear on the jobsite every day and have the foreman walk you through the work that was done. (The foreman has already told all of the crew and the subcontractors not to talk to you) When I married my wife I moved into the home she had built for her several years before. As things started to break I discovered all of the ridiculous things that the builder did and had to address them as they cropped-up. She signed the contract, paid the money and told the builder to call her when it was ready for her to move in. The next (and last) house we share, we built ourselves..............................
As someone with in floor heating based off a boiler i was thinking this sounds neat then they said air flow delivers the heat. Thats a terrible idea and they would've been better off with my plastic floor tubes that also creates no bulkheads. Such a bad building decision.
I know this series is old, but it's amazing how ancient was the technology that American and Canadian, use. In Europe, we have heat water throw pipes, that then go throw Radiator, and they naturally convect cold air to hot air. Just regulating the temperature of the water and the amount of times the water circulate, you can change the temperature. We have valves on each radiator, and you can change each room temperature by changing the aperture of the valve. We can do it digitally now, you can setup script and heat room where you are and heat a bit less room that you don't use often. If you open a window to change air, the radiator can sense it and stop heat in that specific room.
The reason we have a system with ductwork is because it serves heating and air conditioning needs. Per Google: "In 2022, the penetration rate of air conditioning was 90 per cent in the US and only 19 per cent in Europe."

I came to Canada in 2005 from the Netherlands and was BLOWN AWAY when I saw our new installed heating system. OMG !! It took a whole room (Oil furnace + ducts). As where we were used to a 2x2 foot gas burner that pumped hot water through radiators. (Oh and NO air conditioning; it's Canada, eh?😉❄⛄ I still feel like entering the machine room of a large ship when going to the utility room.
the duct system wouldn't work in my house in Netherlands. Overhere in Canada there are voids between beams and posts, all from wood. In Europe most houses are built with brick or Y-tong cement walls. I must say that the nice thing about forced air is that it heats the house very quickly. Even at -20 oC, returning from a 3 day truck-trip it's warming up quite fast. But it takes a LOT of space. Especially the oil furnace + tank. It needs a room by it self.
Warranty is not warth the price of the paper 📝 it is rented on. The biggest problem is the price of the job and how much it costs you to get it fixed the right way
Sounds like the builder didn't take account of the changes to the volume of space in the house after the plan alterations and order a redesign of the HVAC. I'm wondering of these people wanted champagne on a beer budget from the original builder, which lead to this problem. The reason I say that is her inability to appreciate that the ducts need to go somewhere and there is a minimum of space needed for the outcome they want.
You're overlooking that they asked the builder if these things could be done and he kept telling them yes. They financially compensated for these changes all along the way. They trusted the Builder throughout. The Builder at any point if he figured there was a problem could've advised them otherwise. He did not. Your initial point of the Builder overlooking pertinent variables is more than likely the source of the issue. That and him trying a new system he didn't have full competency in employing. Ah costly oversight that the homeowners didn't make.

I work in the commercial buildings industry we’re if you do not have the correct skills and can prove it, you cannot get a job and have always thought that the housing industry work force are not time served and as skilled craftsmen.
What they did not do mechanical engineer to design the system for the house you have to be able to spend money on the proper engineering cuz I would have done 10-foot ceiling be able to do the ductwork properly I used to build houses for a living but Mike Holmes does the right thing and spends the money

With this footage and repairs made by licensed professionals they can now sue and not have to tie it up in court for too long..they'll settle this quickly out of court. But they will still have finish issues, guy was destroying that sheetrock when screwing it in....just busting and cracking edges everywhere. It will pop mud at every one of those screws he did like that.

The worst thing to do is buy a new house built in the last 20 years...Exceptions don't disprove that rule...Home builder during the 90's and Remodeler to this day, fixing many of the mistakes done on new houses...It's only gotten worse too...Buying a new home built in the last 5 years is foolhardy.

The amount of time, money, and frustration created by contractors who will not fix their bad work should be criminal. But I also know that they won't be held accountable in this lifetime. However, at some point those who treat others badly will have a "Come to Jesus" meeting where they will answer for their misdeeds. And then Jesus will judge them. I feel for this couple. Their efforts do not go unnoticed. But what about the hundreds or thousands of other homeowners that can't afford to fix problems like this?
Most of the people they help, are people who saved money for years and took on second jobs and didn't go on vacations, inorder to afford a slightly bigger house than they were in before, and they hired the wrong contractor to make changes to the outdated house that they could afford and the contractor messed up the house and took their money. It is happening to alot of people. The houses that they are fixing are not multi million dollar houses, but homes that builders are not carrying to do correctly but fast and get the money and get out or older homes that the contractor didn't want to take down the older stuff and just put new products over old problems leaving, knob and tube wiring, asbestos in the walls and flooring and covering it up.Installing new things incorrectly and not getting permits and inspections on the work they did. They were telling the homeowners that they passed inspections but they didn't even have permits to do the work. They just took the money and ran.
Big government makes everything worse. Smaller governments is better for everyone and hold people accountable. I don't care if you. Live in Canada or the United States of America last government. Is always better.

He explained it. You can't have everything. You can have vaulted ceilings OR you can have reliable heating/cooling. The way this house was designed and built, it was impossible.
Mike did explain that. You would need to completely re-design the house, as they can't just remove structure to put in larger duct work. Where would YOU put them? As mike said, you can't have your cake and eat it, too. The house would have to be BUILT with much larger "plumbing" to begin with. It sucks, but I understand why they had to do it this way.

@@delyn13 Again it was explained the system installed was too small, they had the smaller ducting and it didn't work there is only so much air that can be forced through a small line and then split off. You'd have to run a smaller system at much higher speeds and thus noise like the issues they had before Noise and cold are far better decision makers than vaulted ceilings

This was not an issue with bureaucracy and paperwork. This was an issue with private corporations not being properly regulated and held responsible.

York air-conditioning must be different in Canada. Here in Texas, that is a "builders grade" brand.

With this footage and repairs made by licensed professionals they can now sue and not have to tie it up in court for too long..they'll settle this quickly out of court. But they will still have finish issues, guy was destroying that sheetrock when screwing it in....just busting and cracking edges everywhere. The worst thing to do is buy a new house built in the last 20 years...Exceptions don't disprove that rule...Home builder during the 90's and Remodeler to this day, fixing many of the mistakes done on new houses...It's only gotten worse too...Buying a new home built in the last 5 years is foolhardy.
Does Mike Holmes somehow pay for these renovations? Otherwise, how would Homeowners afford it otherwise? This is a massive screwup of a contractor that built this house.

That is exactly why I will never support ANY proposal that gives any more money to the govt...not from the poor the rich or corporations. Because they are doing such a shitty job with the money we give them now.
That's why the correct answer to any question that starts out, "Should the government..." is NO.
The amount of time, money, and frustration created by contractors who will not fix their bad work should be criminal. But I also know that they won't be held accountable in this lifetime. However, at some point those who treat others badly will have a "Come to Jesus" meeting where they will answer for their misdeeds. And then Jesus will judge them.
I feel for this couple. Their efforts do not go unnoticed. But what about the hundreds or thousands of other homeowners that can't afford to fix problems like this?

Middle class isn't really "privileged".
Most of the people they help, are people who saved money for years and took on second jobs and didn't go on vacations, inorder to afford a slightly bigger house than they were in before, and they hired the wrong contractor to make changes to the outdated house that they could afford and the contractor messed up the house and took their money. It is happening to alot of people. The houses that they are fixing are not multi million dollar houses, but homes that builders are not carrying to do correctly but fast and get the money and get out or older homes that the contractor didn't want to take down the older stuff and just put new products over old problems leaving, knob and tube wiring, asbestos in the walls and flooring and covering it up.Installing new things incorrectly and not getting permits and inspections on the work they did. They were telling the homeowners that they passed inspections but they didn't even have permits to do the work. They just took the money and ran.
Big government makes everything worse. Smaller governments is better for everyone and hold people accountable. I don't care if you.
Live in Canada or the United States of America last government. Is always better.

dam contractor that failed to deliver proper construction should be held responsible the same way if its a 'factory fault' on a product here , the company is forced to provide a flawless replacement with no cost for the customer , or flat out refund if they rather have that :/ aka , mess it up and you dont have the right to others cash
dam though , gota admit i dont like the spray insulation because its such a nightmare to get off if needing to do repairs and impossible to use 'second hand' :/

This episode Mike didnt even listen to the homeowners and give them what they wanted she told him she wanted vaulted ceilings and he took them away and gave them bulkheads which they didnt want

He explained it. You can't have everything. You can have vaulted ceilings OR you can have reliable heating/cooling. The way this house was designed and built, it was impossible.
Mike did explain that. You would need to completely re-design the house, as they can't just remove structure to put in larger duct work. Where would YOU put them? As mike said, you can't have your cake and eat it, too. The house would have to be BUILT with much larger "plumbing" to begin with. It sucks, but I understand why they had to do it this way.
@@Runco990 its there home NOT Mikes and all he needed to do is put in smaller ducts and keep the vaulted ceiling with no bulkheads but Mike doesnt listen to the clients he does what he wants and because its on tv no one complains
@@delyn13 Again it was explained the system installed was too small, they had the smaller ducting and it didn't work there is only so much air that can be forced through a small line and then split off. You'd have to run a smaller system at much higher speeds and thus noise like the issues they had before
