They are beautiful islands indeed and worth a visit. However after living in the Canary Islands for a few years, psychologically in the end I felt trapped.
I lived in Kaneohe as a kid and my wife was born in Honolulu. Lived on the mainland for 36 years. Moved back to the Islands 2 years ago. We chose Kailua-Kona. Kona has everything without being too big. Airport, Costco, restaurants, beaches, fishing, etc. Chose to be on the leeward side because we like the drier climate. Hilo side is too wet for us, although that's the greener side with the waterfalls. We can always drive to the Hilo side to get our waterfall fix. The B.I. has more climate zones on its 4000+ square miles than probably any other place on earth, everything from desert to snow. We used to vote weekly on whether or not we made the right decision to move here. We've stopped voting. If anybody wants variety, they should consider the island of Hawaii. Kailua-Kona was good enough for King Kamehameha I, and it's good enough for us.
@Peter Kay Living in Hawaii I forgot to mention the diving! Vog was terrible once Fissure 8 opened up. Some people with respiratory problems actually moved off-island. As soon as Halema'uma'u finished draining then the hurricanes passed through in August, we've had nothing but great skies. Literally no vog. Some say it hasn't been this nice in Kailua-Kona since the 80's.
I love kona i go there every year for the canoe racing queen liliuokalani. Stay at uncle Billy hotel. My home is at hookena beach. HEAVEN ON EARTH!!! WILL BE GOING THERE THIS YEAR AGAIN FOR THE RACES. 2019. I miss home. Pure ALOHA lasvegas this weekend a gathering of our PEOPLE fun food and entertainment can't wait. Until then ALOOOOOOOOOOOHA !!!!!
PSB Nighthawk we are also thinking of moving to the big island in a couple of years. Thinking of Waikoloa or Kailua-Kona areas as Hilo is too wet. That said it’s much cheaper there.
You are right I was stationed on Oahu with people who hated being there. When I got of the plane my first day there I knew I was home. Hawaii is a feast for the senses.
I was at Schofield, I arrived in December 97. I remember I showed up in this open air airport in a sweat shirt and jeans and about died. My buddy was in full class A uniform, he was hurting too. I started stripping down to my shorts right in the airport lol.
i want that heartwarming feeling too bc i realize how depressed i get here in south MN. whether its summer months or especially in winter months. i hate being here. i need to be warm & comfortable. God willing i will get there where i can enjoy my life soon.
The most important thing when going to Hawaii is to chill out ! There is a lot of hype surrounding Hawaii , I have been there several times and love the place , still , expectations run high , I find myself wanting the islands to perform for me , and my first day or two there are kinda edgy and I think , what’s the big deal , but that’s not what Hawaii is about , after a few days , the islands gently permeate my existence , and I realize , wow , I am back in Hawaii and it feels really cool. There is no other state like it in the United States. My advice , don’t go there expecting anything , don’t expect the islands to perform for you. Don’t complain when you see a Walmart , an expressway , when the waves are not as big as you thought or the first Mai Tai is not as good as you thought it should be. Just chill. Let the islands find their way into you. Before you know it , you will be home , back at that day job, feeling like you just woke up from a great dream. Thinking , oh my god , I have to go back ! And you will. PS I love all the islands , been to almost all of them ,could not decide which is best. Winks Lisa
Ai Kinward,as a local on Oahu for my whole life, Those islands are inaccessible to most people. Kahoolawe was actually a nuclear bomb test site back in WW2 and Niihau is owned privately by the Robinson Family. Sorry to say but you can't go to those islands like "I'm gonna take a vacation on a privately owned island!" or "Lemme just chill on this radioactive island!" No. Only a dumb bitch would assume that. You can go to Lanai which is next to Maui. But no, a lot of people haven't been to Niihau and Kahoolawe. Also, it is clear you haven't learned/been to the Hawaiian islands at all my friend.
@Ai Kinward I know that. I do. But theoretically, like an average human with a low income. No. Sorry boo but it ain't possible unless the universe offers you a chance to go to those places. I still don't agree with you boo.
Oahu IS MY ISLAND! hands down no question about it, I loved it the moment I landed and spent two amazing weeks by myself and since I left I have done nothing but think about and plan how to get back to my REST OF MY LIFE home!
I love your videos - as a videographer/editor myself I'm curious about how you film these, and capture such clean audio even with the wind while driving. Impressive! I've visited Hawaii many times, each time felt like coming home - and I would be crying when I left. I have finally found a viable housing solution that will enable me to move to Oahu and I couldn't be more ecstatic. Now I just need to find a job.... As you mentioned in a previous video, I cannot wait to leave the Western value system behind, especially the "me first" attitude that is so prevalent here on the East Coast. I cannot wait to get rid of the majority of my possessions and live a simple life enjoying the beach, the mountains, and the company of others. I cannot wait to build an extended family and define myself by something other than work. This is my big chance to align my life to my values. Thank you for the resources in your videos and your website, it's a real service to those of us making the move.
Thanks for the kind words and I love reading about your aspirations! That's totally the right attitude! The video setup took me a while to figure out and I'm so happy for how it turned out! The mic has a wind screen and sits on my left shoulder and is out of view.
I have enough money to get there, but I’m young, married and have 2 kids. I’d have to find a source of income. My cousin is a pilot for Hawaiian airlines. He was telling me the taxes are really high. But definitely had an AWESOME week last week surfing Haleiwa with my son. Tough to come back to florida 😌
Surfed Haleiwa during the big days we had? That's pretty hard core. Get on my newsletter - you'll get all the info you'll need to figure this out if you really want to make it work. www.livinginhawaii.com/do-you-dream-of-living-in-hawaii/
I was born and raised in Hawaii. I've got mixed feelings about it. Growing up being bullied for being Hapa really messed up my mental state, but I guess being picked on, beat up, and treated like garbage from 5 years old until I turned 16 will do that. I miss a lot about home. But I'm still trying to fix the issues I have as a result of my childhood, and even a lot of my adult life. If you hold eye contact with somebody for more than 2 seconds their egos are hurt and think it is a challenge for a fight. My advice for people who want to move to Hawaii is this: Be very VERY wealthy, live where the locals are minimal. Or at least where the locals who exist are somewhat well to do. You'll get less harassment that way. And do not make eye contact with random locals (male or female) that you don't know. I can't really convey through TH-cam how it was, people are always shocked when I tell them what it was like.
I’m so sorry to hear what you went through. People have a hard time believing it’s true, but it most certainly is for some people, as it is in your case.
@@livehawaii yeah, it is a hard thing to deal with. My family is still there and they seem offended and sad that I told them I'd never move back. They ask why and I tell them that I would never put my kids through that. Especially my son who is severely autistic. I've never experienced bullying, or flat out hate towards people as bad as I've experienced back home. There is no justice for it either. My family never had to deal with it, mom is very dark skinned (black almost) and never had issues being a Pacific islander. My dad is white but nobody ever messed with him because he's a giant. My brother is also a giant, and looks like a samoan or large Pacific islander. My sister is also big boned and looks like a local and dark skinned like my brother. Me... 5 feet 7 inches tall, very tiny body and skinny. I have a "friendly" face and timid. Also, the whitest of the group. From kindergarten to sophomore year in high school was me getting messed with. I tried to fight back against a bully and got smashed. Guy was 6 feet 2 and felt like he just needed to beat me up. He wasn't the only one. It stopped when I was a junior in high school because I got a little bigger, and I guess people got bored with it. I felt weak and hopeless. When I moved to Oahu from Big Island it I found that people where still assholes. Same mentality of "eyeing you up" and them getting an ego boost when your look away. Just pumping gas and minding my own business and you got people just staring you, waiting to get a response so they can puff up their chest and say shit like "Ho, fakkah, you eyeing me up? Fakkah like scrap hah?" Yet Hawaii is my home. I don't know any other place as my home and it sucks. But that's my reality. I never really let my family know how it has messed me up. I'm 37 now and I still deal with issues. I live in the mainland now, and have never been treated better for the most part. Aside from being called "black boy" by two different white people, which I just laughed at because in Hawaii I'm not fucking dark enough, and here some inbred jed backwoods racist think I'm not white enough. Pretty funny. Jeez... sorry... I just vented my life on your thread. Anyway, your video randomly came up on my feed, and all my shit came out. I do enjoy watching the scenery in your videos. Not all my time there was awful, just most of it, and I have some great memories of me being there with my close friends. I just can't recommend ever to move there. God bless.
I’m truly so honored that you took the time to share such personal hurt here. I’m really glad you did. I hope in some small way it has given you a chance to release some of the hurt. I pray for your speedy and full recovery.
I know exactly how you felt! I moved to Wahiwa on Oahu because my dad was in the military. I was 11 years old and so excited to be there at first. We lived there 7 years and they were the worst years of my life! I was bullied constantly, and feared for my life! The only reason being I was a haloe. The principal would keep me in his office at school to keep me safer sometimes! I lived there in the middle sixties to early seventies. I too have had mental issues because of all the abuse I suffered! It would be hard for others to believe how horrible some of the things I went through like kill Haloe Day on the last day of school each year! My parents picked me up from school on that day each year! I was a young girl but the local girls had gangs in school and I had to keep my head down and not look at at these locals or they would start harassing me. It was two years after coming back to the mainland before I could look up at people again.I was psychologically scarred!
Been to all the islands several times, and the big island is by far my favorite. I've never held a place so dear as this loveable island. I hope to make it my home one day🌺
I'm originally from Western PA but moved to Oahu in 2009 to go to UH Manoa and earn my degree. I left in 2012 to work in Tokyo, Japan but after getting married here recently to my beautiful wife, I am looking to move back to Hawaii and wasn't sure which island would be best. After watching your video, I feel confident in choosing Oahu again. The drive you took really made me miss the island and reminded me how I initially felt when I fist moved there. So amazing. Also, thank you for the links. I will be signing up and am sure the resources will help! Liked and subscribed - keep up the great videos!
My family is from Oahu...but moved to Big Island. Waimea (cowboy country)....just love going home for 4 months a year...Big Island, Maui and Oahu...favorites.
I live on Big Island. Not a lot of jobs. Cheap real estate. Beautiful tropical jungle. Some shady characters though. Gotta be aware. You can avoid lava in your lavav zone.
Well said. A lot of mainland folks look at the real estate prices on Zillow and think it’s cheap and affordable. They don’t understand the other aspects of it. You do. Thanks.
@@livehawaii - exactly. They come, they buy, and then have buyers remorse. I attempt to tell people with children how bad are schools are here yet few listen once they get bit by the bug its like they have to come. Yet if I had children, I would either wait til they are out of school or just homes school them.
Great video! I just got back from the Big Island and finally understand the term “Heaven on Earth” Hawai’i is definitely on my retirement radar. The biggest impact to me was the people. They are all so gratuitous that main landers appreciate the land and culture. I met people from Kauai and Oahu as well and they too were so friendly and positive. Your drive was breathtaking, MAHALO!
I think women, particularly attractive young women are treated better than others. I'm not sure if you fall into that category, ut I've heard quite a few stories over the years of mainlanders being treated like trash mentally and physically. I hope that all visitors are treated as well as long as they respect the islands on their visit.
absolutely. See my other video about Hawaii can you afford it and is it worth it, I talk about the difference between having a materialistic and a spiritualistic lifestyle
I have to agree with you, Oahu is the best choice to consider in living out of those 4 major islands. Though I frequently visited Maui say more than 20 times, I still think Oahu has more to offer all around. Miliani almost in the center of the island is my pick to move to, it's got good school district for children to have decent education, short drive to outlet mall, Peril Harbor and beautiful Ko Olina. I'll move my family to Oahu one day when financially sound.
I love Oahu. I've been to Kauai, Maui and the big island. I lived in Kaneohe as a kid in the mid 80's. Every time I go back I don't want to leave. I visited Oahu in February just before the quarantine and it's still such an amazing place.
Peter, I agree with you regarding the views... we have only been on Maui for three months now, and we marvel EVERYDAY of the same views, whether mauka or makai!!! Your video just confirmed that we did make the right choice for sure! Mahalo!
My mom and I are planning a trip to Hawaii in March and this video helped so much!! You’re so fun to listen to and the filming is awesome! Liked and subscribed 👍🏻
you are a hoot! love your concept of viewing the island on a scenic drive with your talk it is addictive..lol….great advice ….I knew my first day in Hawaii in 1990 this was home...I have been back multiple times and every single time I leave I cry like a baby and I am not a cry baby at all...I am just so sad to leave...I am now 55 and plan to sell my café and home and make the move....I am in small town in Pennsylvania nestled in the mountainside along rivers lakes and streams..the terrain here is stunning but Hawaii calls...I believe renting a place for a few months in the area I like..Kona..is my best bet...I will need employment so I will need to feel out that aspect...if I was younger I would probably lean towards Oahu due to employment and social reasons...thanks so much for your energizing drive...I have watched a few and love them...I do have a question...maybe you have done this already but have you compiled a segment with mainlanders and their experience moving to island?
Peter Kay is right about Kona being a small town (and far from everywhere), but we do have good shopping...Macy's, Pier 1, Safeway, Costco, Ross, Target, Wal Mart (a K-mart just closed). We also have several climate zones in the vicinity - up Hualalai at 3,500 feet you may need a fireplace, and the Kona coffee district is comfortably cool and wetter than in town. North of town is dry almost all year. I love these videos of Oahu. Oahu and Kauai are the most beautiful islands for jagged mountains and sandy beaches! The Big Island has diversity and you can travel for hours in some places without seeing another human being.
Also, what you cant really describe when you are on the islands is the feel- Oahu..I always felt some spiritual or something in the air that is powerful and calming at the same time..I don't know if everyone experiences it..but it was very healing to me
Love your channel. I just returned on Friday from Oahu and spent a lot of time in the North shore. I am in love! I also think Maui is good for me too. I plan on moving over to one of the islands part time. This video was really helpful and I am gaining a good feel for the islands just by watching your videos. Thank you!
Watched the entire video. Very informative. Narrowing down where to retire next year and your enthusiasm about Oahu makes for some serious consideration.
Thanks! It's definitely Oahu. I want to be able to walk to the local supermarket, etc., or a short bus ride to church, the beach, etc. I want to be in a place where there's ample opportunity to connect with others. I'd like to be able to use my Japanese language often. I will be "retired", so I will volunteer, possibly get a job. When family comes to visit, I want places to eat to be walking distance. It definitely has to be an ethnically, etc. mixed area.
Yes, great info! ...that interior reminds me of my old Porsche. Kauai is my choice as a former hippie-now healer. I was there to get my 2nd Degree Reiki attunement and loved its isolation.
I lived on Oahu in the mid 1950's and again from 1959 to 1961 while my dad was in the Navy. Came back to visit many times between then and 2019. My wife and I have been to all of the five main islands. In 2016 we purchased a condo on Molokai. We still lived in Utah until buying a house on Molokai in 2019. While there are no Costco's, WalMart's, Target stores, Home Depot's and Lowes stores on Molokai, this wonderful island is perfect for my wife and I. I'll be seventy-three this month (March 2021). I have absolutely no desire to move back to the Mainland, and I've been to all fifty states and have lived from Maine to Florida and New York to California. Plus Hawaii, of course! The best thing about Hawaii, and, in my opinion this applies to all of the five major islands, are the people of Hawaii. The Aloha Spirit is alive and well here. Even in downtown, rush-hour traffic in the Waikiki Beach area of Oahu.
I am from the Netherlands, Europe. My sister married a nice native Hawaiian guy she met in Amsterdam. She now lives on Kauai and she loves it! Been there twice, going again.
I lived in Hawaii at a young age and moved to California. I'm a single mother and looking to get back to my original home to raise my children and blessed them to Experience the amazing islands of Hawaii like I did. Thk u so much for this video I really enjoyed this and it means so much to me and motivated me more I felt right at home all over again, thk u.
I’m so glad I found your account! Subscribed! I plan to move to Oahu as soon as my business is solid (I can work from home). I feel so called by the Islands, the beauty, the weather, the ocean, the culture...I feel like I was meant to be there! I need sunshine or I’m not a happy person.
Excellent! I'm glad you found this too. click on the link in the description and get to the website where you can sign up for the newsletter as well if you haven't already.
I just want to say thank you for taking the time to film beautiful Oahu! I love the beauty of the mountains so much. I live on Maui and I have not physically been to any of the other islands. TH-cam is where I view the others. I chose Maui because it's more like where I used to live in California. You are right on about choosing a place close to what you are used to. Oahu would have been too big a stretch for me. The only complaint I have is the lack of and a variety of restaurants!
Great video. I lived on Oahu while a kid and loved it... to the point I'm thinking about returning. I've never forgotten driving through the Pali tunnel and seeing Kailua/Kaneohe for the first time. Glad to see you still love Hawaii as much as you obviously do.
Expensive AF. Most people I know start talking about moving somewhere that land is cheap once they have more than one kid. Keep in mind these people are making about $90k and probably have a spouse that works and makes near as much too. Texas and Arizona are states that enter the conversation. Housing is by far the largest and most difficult to lower expense. Between the cost of a 2 or three bedroom and a $1000 Costco grocery bill monthly (for two) you had better have a good job and really get your enjoyment out of the beach and life in Hawaii.
Lived on Oahu for many years..Mostly in the Kailua area...just recently moved back to upstate NY and miss home like crazy. This was a very informative segment..Can't say enough about the beauty of Hawaii.
I’m a Canadian and have visited Oahu 7 times and love it there, I want to go back soon..I wish it was easy for Canadians to move because that would be my dream to move there
Hello and aloha. Me too I like it very much . I am living in Hawaii about 25 years I would say.,before I was living in Caribbean islands for a two years. I am sailing alone around the world, I was visited many beautiful islands, but Hawaii one of the best in the world.i wish all the best. Aloha.
Peter, Thank you for another great video. I think I would be happy on any of the islands, but still planning on Kauai, at least for part of the year. Your work is greatly appreciated, Pete
Oahu is the best for me. I like cities and need to be near good healthcare. I’m 82 and not sure I can afford Hawaii but I l love it. Thanks for this video. It was indeed gorgeous.
I have been to many places in the continental USA and Canada. None truly impressed me more than my hometown (North of Seattle). Then I went to Hawaii (Oahu), I was so surprised how fresh, clean, and beautiful the scenery was. I can see I am happy retiring there one day 😊
Excellent. Please sign up at the link to my newsletter, and keep me posted. I am curious as to how the military helps people that come to Hawaii transition to island life
@@sheenaboyd3755 Maui is more laid-back, it feels like a place you would want to settle. Oahu is a big city on an island lol it's more fast-paced, kind of reminds me of NYC
I moved to Kauai 18 years ago from Westchester County, about an hour’s drive north of NYC. As far as cost of living, housing - it was not that different. I had visited the 4 main islands on vacation so was familiar with them all. Since I grew up in the Air Force and my favorite 2 places were San Antonio and the Canal Zone , Panama, when I decided I needed a change from the cold winters of NY, Hawaii was a no-brainer. I have a son in NY and what I always called my “hippie son” on Kauai. He encouraged me to choose Kauai so I would have family if needed. I didn’t think it out much beyond that but I definitely lucked out in my choice of island. I was already 59 but found work immediately as a babysitter for a service that went mostly to hotels. After that, I got a job at Borders and worked for them until they closed. But in the meantime, I got a part-time, then full-time job as a librarian at Kauai Community College. All this to say that I successfully and luckily overcame the cost-drawbacks of Kauai. I love the laid-back life on Kauai, the beauty, the friendliness of the people, less crowds and traffic than Oahu, less need to dress up than NY. The worst thing for me is that my other son and his family are a 10+ hour plane ride to visit. But every time I visit, I know I can’t move back. This is home now.
Wow, a beautiful place to be where I have just received a letter of acceptance from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. What the nice place I will be going!
I moved to Oahu in 2016 and enjoyed it very much for the first year . I joined a scuba dive group and had a great time hiking everywhere. After that time I because quite stressed from all the people that live in Honolulu. I am from a small town in Arkansas so I believe you're right when you say to pick an island that is close to where you're originally from. I moved back only to realize this after the fact. Maui sounds like a comfortable island for me personally. Thanks for your insight, it is very helpful.
Robert Brazzell I'm from Oahu and I prefer Maui for the scenery, the food is way better than Oahu, so if I had to choose another island I would definitely choose Maui, Lanai is beautiful too but it's a very small town and more expensive
I’ve been having this feeling of wanting change and wanting to take a big step in moving out to someplace and of course I’ve chosen Hawaii, I’m used to a big city and fast traveling so I think Oahu would be the best for me. But at the same time I’m still really young so hopefully in my mid 20s I can make this step to live in the aloha state. Great video!
Oh man, your talk make so much sense, even I am not planing moving to Hawaii yet. Carried so much experience and I would say, wisdom. So enjoyable listening!
Decided to make changes, I have managed HOA’s for 20-years, we just decided that Oahu is the place to manage for the next 10-years and retire! So the search begins! PCAM will work for food! So excited!
Excellent video! On my honeymoon we spent a week on each; Oahu, Maui, Big Island, and Kauai. We have been back for a two week stay on Maui. If I had to live there I would choose Oahu or Maui, but I live in a Midwestern city of 500k. The Big Island has a small town feel to it and is absolutely beautiful. Kauai is amazing and feels like paradise. We stayed B&B almost the whole time we were there and found the locals were some of the nicest people you could meet.
Lived on both Oahu and Maui. Moved to Oahu (Waikiki) in 1986 and stayed 4 years until a job transfer took us to Maui. I was upset at first but after about 6 months I embraced it. When I was on Oahu I was single, young and partying. “The Wave” was my favorite and of course, Mooses for Long Island iced tea! My first keiki (child) was born 1 month after moving to Maui. It worked out for the best. Pace is much slower here and easy to raise a family. Most of my friends on Oahu sent their keiki to private schools. We looked at Seabury Hall, waaay too much $$$. Both of my children went 12 years public and went on to very good colleges on the mainland. Now when I visit Oahu, it’s overwhelming!! I do love the restaurants and shopping. I heard they closed Mekongs Thai on Beretania.... bumma! .....haven’t been to Kauai since 1982. The big island is pretty cool and Lanai....used to go over on the ferry for lunch at The Lodge but haven’t been there since Larry Ellison bought it. Some really good people from there. Never been to Molokai.....feels like I can touch it when I drive over to kapalua/honolua bay🌺
Thank you 🙏 If you’re from NorCal....So far I feel like the Hawaiian islands are similar to Cali...Kauai is like Marin County or Napa (yuppie hippie), Oahu is like L.A. (trendy, busy, freeways, traffic), Maui is more like Berkeley meets Marin County (some low key city or social life but more beach suburban, maybe like San Diego), main island I’ve never been to but I’d guess more like Contra Costa County with some Berkeley.
This is by far the most informative video that I have watched about what island is best for me .I am a Physiotherapist and I am here working in Qatar and just saving a lot right now and I am planning to take the Physical Therapy Licensure exam in Hawaii so to move and live there.Thank you. The view from where you were driving is fantastically amazingly and insanely beautiful. Would love to drive there one day.
Sasha DeKasha 😊 nothing would ever bother me there 😍 I love the Big Island 😍 BTW, I’m binge watching you videos right now - I love the information. I’m trying to make the move - my family is all the way in Bulgaria anyway... So, I’m working on convincing the husband 🤞 Thank you for your videos 🤙🏼
Oahu's by far the most populated island and it still has huge, huge areas that are just empty. There were more people living in them 200 years ago than now.
In the late 70’s there was a drive in theater high in the mountains. Is it still there? I remember going and just sitting in the car waiting for the movie to start and being amazed at the view of the mountains around the movie screen. Beautiful.
You are incorrect about Kona. Kona has the Costco. Hilo has Walmart. Kona is busy with lots of tourists, the airport is there. Hilo is much more laid back. The weather is also quite different, rains all the time in Hilo. Very humid. Land and housing is also cheaper in the Hilo area. Hilo and Kona are quite different from each other. Hilo are is much more the REAL Hawaii.
Peter, you mention Oʻahu being cosmopolitan. I lived there in the 50ʻs when as a teen Iʻd walk around Waikiki in a bathing suit but put on dress and heels to go downtown Honolulu. That gave way to less formal attire about the same time it changed everywhere. I lived in the Waikiki jungle as a teen but moved to Kaneʻohe later to raise a family. And I was lucky, my job kept me traveling around the islands so I spent time in them all. My home: I could see and smell the bay, the ginger, plumeria, pikaki of my garden, taste the fresh papaya and lilikoi off my tree and vine; and enjoy the pricey coke and chips with the savings on shoes! And look up from my morning coffee to see those majestic mountains looming over my back yard. As the song goes, "donʻt know why I left it and I never will". Thanks for the drive down memory lane.
Secret drive, eh? 😜 If you’re familiarized w/the mountains, you can see 👀 twin peaks! Mountains on the left, he’s heading north. So I’d say... the old road! 👍👏🏻 Auloa Rd. Is cool, too.
I really loved going on the drive with you! I'm toying with the idea of moving to Hawaii after finding a job to move to. This drive and your talk was exactly what I wanted and needed!
awesome! Click on the link in the description and get on my newsletter. I got a specific program to help people move to Hawaii and the best possible way
Hi Peter, Aloha and thanks for the great videos! I'm considering moving to Oahu/Waikiki and driving Lyft/Uber for a living. I'm from Seattle WA. and drive Lyft now and enjoy it very much. I would like to give it a try for a few years (2 - 3) in Waikiki and see what happens, if it fails I can always move back to Seattle. I would plan on renting a studio/one bedroom one bath with parking for my Lyft vehicle. Please let me know your thoughts. I'll be vacationing in Kauai next week if you would like to meet up. Otherwise I would love to meet you in Waikiki later in the year and discuss apartment shopping. I've been looking online and found several affordable candidates already. I'm planning on 2019-ish for the move. Downsizing everything here in Seattle is going to take some time for sure. Thanks much --TW
Very interesting! Never thought about that approach and seems like a great experiment. Keep me posted! You can message me through either the TH-cam channel or the website via the contact form
If you're big into hiking and outdoorsy stuff, Kauai is by far the best island. Incredibly beautiful, definitely has a unique feel from all other islands.
It's hard to see my homeland objectified in this way. I hope the U.S. progresses beyond colonization and commodification of native peoples and ʻāina (≈ land) sooner than later.
Keoni I'm a fucking haole and I agree with you.. My dad was born and raised here and I have been watching these Hawaii tourism videos for "educational purposes" and I'm sick. Nobody references the local culture, traditions, anything. They just see places they wanna go, litter, and set up shop. I am constantly checking haoles and I'm haole and they say you can't say that you're white. I'm like yea I'm a fucking haole I tread carefully and respect. If you can't move here, respect the culture, understand Hawaii was illegally annexed.... Then come here.. Vacation.. Take photos and go home
@@theroadwestraveled1466 Hi, I am from Serbia and I would LOVE to learn more about the traditon and culture - basically the practices of people who respect nature as much as Hawaiians do - but just as you have said: there are no videos about that! I have watched some documentaries, but could you please recommend anything that is genuine - books, sites, videos, youtube channels, anything? Mahalo!
I'm planning on moving there I want to live by the beach and want a change in my life coming from NY I'm done with snow and I love traveling to Asia so it works
I moved back to Calif after living on Oahu for 5 yrs and I loooove watching you drive around- it makes me feel at home. Im thinking of moving back:) I love Maui for the quiet, Mother's arms type feel, but you are right..more opportunities in Oahu.
After watching this clip, I use to think Maui was for me, but I think Oahu fits me better, good job, ys I need your help moving there, at 67 years time is very important to me, so I need to get going, thanks
Aloha Paul. I saw your other comment and deleted it because you posted your phone number. My first recommendation is that you go to my website, subscribe to the newsletter, and go through the content starting with the editors picks. I send it neutered newsletters each week that you can easily reply to. That's a start
I’m so glad I came across your channel. I definitely subscribed so I can do all the required research into moving. My wife’s family is from Hawaii and still has some relatives there. I have never been but it’s been pulling on me really strong for some time now and that’s my wife’s dream to be living there. I grew up in California, moved to Tennessee for 5 years in my early teens, back to Cali for about 10 years and now we’re in Spokane, wa for the past 10 years. It feels like we live on an island here with not much to do. We’ve came to despise it due to the horrible long winters. We want to go back home but we’re never fully satisfied there either. I’ve been in construction for about 20 years and mostly plumbing, but I know all other aspects of construction as well so god willing I can find a decent job to sustain my family and I. We don’t need much other than a place over our head and a peaceful, healthy and happy life and we truly feel like Hawaii could be the place that will give us the at home feeling. 🙏🏼

Tis beautiful, indeed! You crack me up with your Christmas morning enthusiasm about Hawaii after all your years there! 😄 Enjoy!!

They are beautiful islands indeed and worth a visit. However after living in the Canary Islands for a few years, psychologically in the end I felt trapped.

Kona has a Costco, Target, Lowe’s, and Walmart.
Lots of Hippies and Vegans live in Hilo and Puna on the Big Island.
I approve of this message, I'm in hawaiian beaches and they're everywhere.

@@livehawaii Wow, I live on Manini one street down! 😆
That is just unbelievable!
Jennifer Mackall has He ever been in the Big Island?
Excellent recommendation! Thank you so much for writing all of that. Have you had any heavy vog days?

Well said Lisa!
I love that you still love Hawaii this much after living there so long. What a gorgeous place
It’s really remarkable and totally true. I would have never thought that to be the case.
Oahu IS MY ISLAND! hands down no question about it, I loved it the moment I landed and spent two amazing weeks by myself and since I left I have done nothing but think about and plan how to get back to my REST OF MY LIFE home!
Make it happen!

I just returned home from there. I really wish I could find a way to move there. Very special place.
Can be done
I have enough money to get there, but I’m young, married and have 2 kids. I’d have to find a source of income. My cousin is a pilot for Hawaiian airlines. He was telling me the taxes are really high.
But definitely had an AWESOME week last week surfing Haleiwa with my son. Tough to come back to florida 😌

@@livehawaii Oh yea! It was heavy. But worth the pounding…lol
Definitely gave my boy some confidence being out there.
so cool you went out there with your son. what an experience!
Fakkah like scrap hah?"
Yet Hawaii is my home.
I’m so sorry to hear that and can only imagine how horrible it was
Been to all the islands several times, and the big island is by far my favorite.
Hawai’i is definitely on my retirement radar.
The biggest impact to me was the people. They are all so gratuitous that main landers appreciate the land and culture. I met people from Kauai and Oahu as well and they too were so friendly and positive.
Your drive was breathtaking, MAHALO!
Glad you liked it! It’s all about respecting the people and their culture and their values. That’s the secret.
I have been to the big island 2 1/2 years ago for 1 month and loved it. I'm finally in Oahu and need to determine if I can stay permanently.
I think women, particularly attractive young women are treated better than others. I'm not sure if you fall into that category, ut I've heard quite a few stories over the years of mainlanders being treated like trash mentally and physically. I hope that all visitors are treated as well as long as they respect the islands on their visit.
I respect how much this man clearly LOVES hawaii.
Thank you! Yes, I do!

Thanks for the kind words! Great idea on the recent movers to Hawaii!
We should do a go fund me page and do a video together in Kona in a convertible
Also, what you cant really describe when you are on the islands is the feel- Oahu..I always felt some spiritual or something in the air that is powerful and calming at the same time..I don't know if everyone experiences it..but it was very healing to me
Many feel the same as you do

Your welcome!
Molokai sounds so sweet to the ear. It's got to be good.
Well said!

New video request: what is it like to raise a family in Hawaii?
Click on the link in the description and submit your question. It's a really good one!
Well, if you and your kids are as white as you look, then there is a very good chance of you and your whole family being bullied.
Sean Couch it’s great. My three hated having to leave. We talk about going back every single day. We will some day.

Very cool! Great story.
Wow, a beautiful place to be where I have just received a letter of acceptance from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. What the nice place I will be going!
Congratulations! I’ve got a ton of connections there.

Thank you for sharing your story. I think it’s extremely helpful to others thinking about what’s best for them.
Robert Brazzell I'm from Oahu and I prefer Maui for the scenery, the food is way better than Oahu, so if I had to choose another island I would definitely choose Maui, Lanai is beautiful too but it's a very small town and more expensive
@@songbird377 Thanks for your point of view. I agree that Maui is a better choice. Have a great day .
I’m glad you like it! I came here when I was in my early 20s as well
Oh man, your talk make so much sense, even I am not planing moving to Hawaii yet. Carried so much experience and I would say, wisdom. So enjoyable listening!
Thank you!
Decided to make changes, I have managed HOA’s for 20-years, we just decided that Oahu is the place to manage for the next 10-years and retire! So the search begins! PCAM will work for food! So excited!

We know!
Lol!!
Which island was the most green and full of waterfalls? I want lush tropical paradise
All of the main islands are pretty much the same. Though technically speaking, Kauai is the wettest with the most waterfalls
@@livehawaii Thanks!
Great video. Love the drive. Left Oahu in the mid 80's. Always regret it.
Go back! :)
Love the story! Mahalo Nui for sharing! I came here at about the same time. Moose’s! I lived right next to the Wave!
Sad to have to try to compare.
Thank you and hope to see you here one day!
Nice beautiful drive and good information. A point to clarify is Kona and not Hilo has the Costco.
Thank you. I thought that Hilo also had a Cosco. I appreciate the clarification.
This was so informative, thank you so much! Plan on making the move this spring fingers crossed

I’m in the middle of the Arizona desert... so I guess the Kona side is for me - moon landscapes 😁
If the vog doesn't affect you...
Lol good luck! Watch the one about family.

Oahu for me. Mix of city, nature. My heart lives there already.
So does mine! :-)
Fruit are just every where
Passion fruit, mango, everything grows wild.
love your videos Thank you for sharing
Glad you like them!
Oahu's by far the most populated island and it still has huge, huge areas that are just empty. There were more people living in them 200 years ago than now.
alex carter Really?
No.
In the late 70’s there was a drive in theater high in the mountains. Is it still there? I remember going and just sitting in the car waiting for the movie to start and being amazed at the view of the mountains around the movie screen. Beautiful.
Probably the Kam drive in
You are incorrect about Kona.
Kona has both a Costco and Walmart
Costco is north out of downtown kona off of highway 11 (Queen ka’ahumaunu Hwy) in a commercial development at turn off on hina lani St.
Thank you for that wonderful story of times past! Love it!
"We are taking one of the best secret drives one the island of Oahu, and I'm not gonna tell you where it is."
This disappointed me immensely.
If I told you, it wouldn’t be a secret anymore, would it?
@ Pono Kunitomo - Pono your an absolute fool.
Some people just looking for something to hate. Can't help them
Pono Kunitomo Petah the skeeezah 😂 hahaha yessah
Secret drive, eh? 😜
If you’re familiarized w/the mountains, you can see 👀
twin peaks!
Mountains on the left, he’s heading north.
So I’d say... the old road! 👍👏🏻
Auloa Rd.
Thanks much

If you're big into hiking and outdoorsy stuff, Kauai is by far the best island. Incredibly beautiful, definitely has a unique feel from all other islands.
Totally agree. Insane hiking opportunities on Kauai
I personally like Kihei because the beaches their are amazing. Perfect for body boarding!
Love the format/Great video!!
Thank you!
Love yr touring...knew Hawaii from working for Hyatt Regency SF and Corp!
Mahalo!
Incredible! Thanks for such a informative video :)
You're welcome!
I'm planning on moving there I want to live by the beach and want a change in my life coming from NY I'm done with snow and I love traveling to Asia so it works
Great video !! Tips while also virtually exploring the island.. amazing
Glad you like!
Maui💕💕🤙🏼
I moved back to Calif after living on Oahu for 5 yrs and I loooove watching you drive around- it makes me feel at home. Im thinking of moving back:) I love Maui for the quiet, Mother's arms type feel, but you are right..more opportunities in Oahu.
After watching this clip, I use to think Maui was for me, but I think Oahu fits me better, good job, ys I need your help moving there, at 67 years time is very important to me, so I need to get going, thanks
Glad this helped!

Follow the link in the description to her to find a job. Follow that and you’ll be fine. You have a huge advantage that your wife has family here
I want to live in Hawaii but I can’t afford it 😬😢 But I’m still aiming to live there someday thinking about applying a nurse job in military 🤔😊😊
Hawaii has a very large military community
Great educational video. Thank you.
You're welcome!
1;46 into this and I am motion sick as all hell.
Lol guess it’s a little too virtual
Thank you for the ride! For me and my husband, the Kona area would fit us. We've been to all of the islands and the Big Island fits our style.
