I've been to the Big Island countless times, and have watched lots of YT videos about it, and I would have to say that this one has the best videography and narration of all of them. Outstanding job!
You Missed A MUST SEE Akaka Falls North of Hilo on the Hama Kua Coast! Inland a few miles but features a Beautiful nature walk through natural orchids, banana trees, area of bamboo forest and a loop trail going to 200ft Akaka Falls. It is on a paved path. I have been there 3 times and it is Spectacular!
I loved all the commentary, history opinions and tips that you gave for each area. You helped make it easier for me to decide where I wanted to spend my effort getting to. Thank you so much!
We visited the Big Island on August 22-25th 2023. There are cheap cabins rented through the Volcano House Lodge. Don't miss their breakfast and great views of the Kilauea Volcano.
1:28 Just to Clarify, 'Big' is not the name of the island nor is it 'The Big Island' This is the Island of Hawai'i, in the State of Hawai'i. The island chain formally known as the Sandwich Islands, named such by James Cook in 1778. The island of Hawai'i is commonly referenced as 'The Big Island' for simplicity.
Sorry for the confusion. I called it Hawaii Island at the beginning with an "Island of Hawai'i" graphic that transitions into "The Big Island." Generally I say, "Often called the Big Island." I should have this time as well. And when I said, "Big is a good name for..." I didn't mean to imply it was the official name. But since I'm James and called Jim, I should be more attentive to nickname usage. I did know it was called the Sandwich Islands. I should have mentioned that when describing my near death experience on the trail. Apologies for not being as clear as I should have been. But thanks for watching my earnest attempt to describe my time on the Island of Hawai'i.
I can’t thank you enough for the detailed road map you put together. This is incredibly awesome 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 work I just got back from the Big Island 🏝️ this morning and I am so happy and proud to be seeing this amazing video since my team and I were able cover several of these places since we have friends there !!! Thank you again for this video !!!!!!
Like all the islands, I found it hard to know where to go and what to do on the Big Island. After three visits there, I finally had a good idea of places to see and time required to see them. Thanks for letting me know you found it helpful.
@@newsocracy of course and thank you so very much ! I even sent your link to a few friends of mine considering going on a trip there so once again “Mahalo nui loa “ 😅
One of the best videos and recommendations that I have gone through for Big Island. Can you please let us know what location were you at for the Waimea golden hour?
Thanks for letting me know the video is helpful. I shot those shots on the highway that runs right by the Waimea-Kohala Airport sign on the north east side of the island.
Mahalo Jim…great video! That Uncle Robert’s looks very interesting, will have to check it out when we go in March! How is the whale watching from the Big Island? March is whale season but not sure if they hang out around there..
Can I ask you a question? How did Captain Cook discover Hawaii when there were indigenous ppl already living here for at least 850 yrs before Capt Cook?
Europeans were unaware of Hawaii until Capt Cook, much to the misfortune of Hawaiians, found it while looking for the northwest passage in 1778. Hawaiians knew where they were. Europeans didn't. Cook was British. For Europeans, a discovery.
If you’re going to spend several days at volcanoes national park, I’d stay in Hilo or closer to the park. It’s hard to avoid a good bit of driving no matter where you stay. I’ve never stayed on the north shore of the island. Next time might give the south side a try, somewhere between VNP and Captain Cook. The drive all the way back from VNP to CC at night is exhausting to me.
That's my dream place! Literally! I will be living there by 2026.I have all my business plan done!! Ask me from the future if that happened! Wish me lucky!

You’re very kind. You made my day. Thanks!

This church is ultimately so beautiful and the history around it. It was very interesting.

i’m so glad you found it helpful. Thanks for telling me.
Your suggestions are fantastic as I've had the privilege of visiting all you mentioned except the observatory which I plan on seeing this year
I greatly appreciate your kind words. It took me a while to get up Mauna Kea, too. It doesn't easily fit into most itineraries.

Nice video, thanks for the tips. I’ll be there next week and some of these suggestions will come in handy. 😅

What was the beach at minute 3:22 outside Hilo? Was that Shipman Beach? If so, great hike and one of my favorite beaches on either side of the island.
Yes it was. If you walk south along the shore from there you should come to it. I agree, I loved the beauty and solitude there.

I've never been whale watching from BI. But I'm sure you'll see a good many in March.
Show up to volcanos Park before 8am or after 5 pm and you won't need to pay because there's no one at the gate
super informative video, plus I love your humor! instant subscribe :)

These national parks that charge admittance - does the national park yearly pass cover these fees? Thanks
It does. I used mine.
Where do you recommend staying? Kona or Hilo

Better places and more flights to stay on Kona side and only 95 miles to the vocano park.
Kona. One night at the volcano house!
Heading back to the Hawaii Island in early 2025. Can’t wait.

Black SAND beach!
We rode and it was worth paying for.
Any chance of sharing the links to your airbnbs.
Certainly. I should have already done that. I'll post in description.
