i can tell you..I have been doing this before i even saw this video and trust me it does work.. i had some serious gut and heart burn problems and i went to the doctor and nothing worked but when i learned about deep breathing i was completely healed.. Deep breathing does work u just have to stick to it..

I've been doing this for a number of years and it helps me fall asleep or calm my nerves. But one thing not mentioned in this video (is that you have to take yogic breaths i.e. diaphragmatic breathing...some people call it horizontal breathing (google it, it is quite simple) instead of the 'vertical' breathing where your shoulders go up and down as you inhale/exhale); Also I do it much slower with diaphragmatic breathing (I breathe in for almost 4 seconds). Hold for 7 and exhale for 8.
Yes but I am not yet ready, I started on my 9th breath cycle to see it for myself, but I just died for a while and came back to life the next day...it's a warning that I must wait a little longer
Think_Care Quite the opposite. You never breathe that deep natrually, so you actually give your body a lot more oxygen to deal with. If you do this too much, you will feel very light-headed and possibly faint.
Think_Care Read about Buteko technique, we need more carbon dioxide and less oxygen. Forget deep breathing, and think holding breath to increase co2 levels in the blood.

I was taught a ratio of 1-5-2. So for instance I do 5 seconds in, 20 seconds holding, and 10 seconds out. It's the out that is the real key cause you have to exhale really so and controlled. Best part is it only takes one to two cycles to cure hiccups.

I ve been doing the lay one hand on your chest and one on your tummy.(laying down). breath in through nose and feel your tummy go up..deeper and feel the chest go up. hold for a count of 4 .. blow it out of your mouth..this certainly helps to relax you...i might give this a try though..

I developed a strange dull pain that went from the right to the left side of my chest, like a cramp behind my ribs, perhaps on my lungs themselves. It was inner, visceral; it was harder just after waking up and some days I couldn't even sit to work without pain. after two weeks practicing 4-7-8 breathing, it almost disappeared. Placebo? Self-suggestion? It really works? It doesn't matter. My energy levels are boosting day by day, I use much better my few sleep hours and I will keep practicing this 3-4 times a day. Thanks!
How are you supposed to purse your lips and forcefully push breath out with your tongue pressing against the roof of your mouth? So far all this has done is make the muscles in my jaw hurt. Any pointers greatly appreciated.
Came here after reading the book Breath. After a week I know breathing right will save my life. But what I don’t get is why you can only do this for 4 cycles and how does this benefit me throughout the day if I do it in the mornings. I now use the 5.5-5.5 technique, but that one I use all day to keep calm and focussed.
Great technique, I've been doing it for years. But why not more than 8 cycles at one time, after a month of getting used to it? I've always wondered about that.

4-7-8 (if applied in seconds) equates to 3 breaths per minute. Quite a reduction if your breathing more than the normal 6-12 breathes per minute. So what do we do in between the 4-7-8 sessions to maintain the reduction in breathing pattern, nose #breathing (in & out through nose 24/7) keep good upright posture during your waking hours, and relaxation of our shoulders all while going through our daily life. Seriously bro this helps my anxiety a lot. I have severe panic disorder, general anxiety disorder & social anxiety and I do this every time I feel a panic attack coming on. It takes the edge off of it, and quickly, too.
In Indian yoga breathing system (Pranayama), while inhaling one should fill the chest portion (upper part) and while exhaling check to you pull the stomach in (lower part). If one is not aware of this, then while inhaling people tend to fill the stomach portion and exhaling empty the chest part. The second type will make the exercise a tiresome practice. Dr.Weil may clarify on the relevance of the above for getting a good sleep.
It's great for stress relief. When you're craving a cigarette, when you're craving candy, when you're going mach 3 in a flying sleigh and a magic reindeer drops a deuce in your face.
This breathing technique cures my nighttime leg cramps. I've tried stretching, potassium and magnesium with no real help. I tried the 4-7-8 breathing and was amazed that the leg cramps went away. I use it every night and it works every time. I'm thinking that the severity of the recurring cramps is diminishing as well. So weird, how does this work?
Google parasympathetic vs. sympathetic nervous system. Our body gets triggered into sym. by all types of stress, but we have to force the para. to turn on and counterbalance by breathing. There is also a chemical reaction that occurs. Check out Wim Hof for a more detailed explanation.
Rhythmic breathing gives a healthier heart rate variability (HRV) and stimulates the sympathetic nervous system. People seem to prefer different rates: The world champion free diver Stig Severinsen advise a 1:2 ratio.The Navy Seals use Box Breathing which is 4 seconds in - 4 seconds hold - 4 seconds out - 4 seconds hold. Dr. Alen Watkins says the steady and even rhythm is the most important. Wim Hoff has a different approach: Deep inhale and short exhale - do it 25-30 times then hold for as long as possible. Breath out and take a normal inhale. Do this three times. In general the key is rhythm, smoothness and less inhale than combined hold and exhale. The Wim Hoff Method is different as it is a kind of controlled hyperventilation. It all takes practice. Which ratio is the best comes down to who you ask. It's all a mix of old tradition and new science.

Athletes? I don’t think so. I think you’re mostly referring to flow state

How are you supposed to purse your lips and forcefully push breath out with your tongue pressing against the roof of your mouth? So far all this has done is make the muscles in my jaw hurt. Any pointers greatly appreciated.

Came here after reading the book Breath. After a week I know breathing right will save my life. But what I don’t get is why you can only do this for 4 cycles and how does this benefit me throughout the day if I do it in the mornings. I now use the 5.5-5.5 technique, but that one I use all day to keep calm and focussed.

Try slowing down the playback speed of the video, start going back to 0.75 and then .50 as you improve.

Great technique, I've been doing it for years. But why not more than 8 cycles at one time, after a month of getting used to it? I've always wondered about that.
When we inhale 4 and exhale 8 the air we exhale is more than we take in or

Can this practice coincide with Wim Hof's breathing techniques? I currently I perform the WHB first thing in the morning. I have a Sleep Apnea. I read that breathing practice will help heal that condition, any recommendations?
Wim Hof's breathing technique is precisely the opposite because it is hyperventilation, something that is well known to increase anxiety.

4-7-8 (if applied in seconds) equates to 3 breaths per minute. Quite a reduction if your breathing more than the normal 6-12 breathes per minute. So what do we do in between the 4-7-8 sessions to maintain the reduction in breathing pattern, nose #breathing (in & out through nose 24/7) keep good upright posture during your waking hours, and relaxation of our shoulders all while going through our daily life. Seriously bro this helps my anxiety a lot. I have severe panic disorder, general anxiety disorder & social anxiety and I do this every time I feel a panic attack coming on. It takes the edge off of it, and quickly, too.

In Indian yoga breathing system (Pranayama), while inhaling one should fill the chest portion (upper part) and while exhaling check to you pull the stomach in (lower part). If one is not aware of this, then while inhaling people tend to fill the stomach portion and exhaling empty the chest part. The second type will make the exercise a tiresome practice. Dr.Weil may clarify on the relevance of the above for getting a good sleep.
It's great for stress relief. When you're craving a cigarette, when you're craving candy, when you're going mach 3 in a flying sleigh and a magic reindeer drops a deuce in your face.

when I took a Lamaze practice class which leads you to controlled breathing during pregnancy and labor pains it was very similar to this
I did it too but I still wanted drugs!! Childbirth on an epidural is sooooo nice. Recovery was easier too.

This breathing technique cures my nighttime leg cramps. I've tried stretching, potassium and magnesium with no real help. I tried the 4-7-8 breathing and was amazed that the leg cramps went away. I use it every night and it works every time. I'm thinking that the severity of the recurring cramps is diminishing as well. So weird, how does this work?
Google parasympathetic vs. sympathetic nervous system. Our body gets triggered into sym. by all types of stress, but we have to force the para. to turn on and counterbalance by breathing. There is also a chemical reaction that occurs. Check out Wim Hof for a more detailed explanation.
Rhythmic breathing gives a healthier heart rate variability (HRV) and stimulates the sympathetic nervous system. People seem to prefer different rates: The world champion free diver Stig Severinsen advise a 1:2 ratio.The Navy Seals use Box Breathing which is 4 seconds in - 4 seconds hold - 4 seconds out - 4 seconds hold. Dr. Alen Watkins says the steady and even rhythm is the most important. Wim Hoff has a different approach: Deep inhale and short exhale - do it 25-30 times then hold for as long as possible. Breath out and take a normal inhale. Do this three times. In general the key is rhythm, smoothness and less inhale than combined hold and exhale. The Wim Hoff Method is different as it is a kind of controlled hyperventilation. It all takes practice. Which ratio is the best comes down to who you ask. It's all a mix of old tradition and new science.
