    When I first saw this movie, it blew me away. I recommended it to my mother, and she told me, "I don't like movies with subtitles!". Months go by...one day, she tells me, "Chris, I decided to watch Apocalypto... I think it's one of my favorite movies of all time!!" 😆 She watched it every time she got a chance to. RIP Mom.

    The white stuff is limestone/plaster used for building all those monuments and pyramids. Part of the process of manufacturing the plaster was burning it in fire kilns. Ironically, the reason they had no crops was because they upset the ecosystem by cutting down, and burning all the trees to make the plaster. This effected rainfall, soil, and many other things a rain forest needs to thrive. Some scientists believe, along with the Spaniards, this contributed to the demise of the Mayans. That, and the fact they did these sacrifices, starting with the smartest and strongest first to please the Gods. Fun facts, or not so fun. LOL

I was shown how the great mayan city Palanque is actually the ancient hopi city of Palatquapi, through stories we got similarities. it is said to never head into the land of the deep south, or we become food for that serpent... our traditional clothes have ties to the rain forest.

      No, his father was right. nothing they could do. His father didn't say "do do anything." he said don't let fear into your heart. They were going to make plans the next day; nothing they could do to avoid the situation. After the waterfall, he learned his father's lesson. you live your life the best you can. Fear and dread serve no purpose. Hazards come and go. Predators come and go. you'll either live or you wont. Fearing about dying just ruins days alive and doesn't prevent death. Just do your best, have your life in order, and live your life. Prepare and adapt. Fearing helps nothing but dysfunction to grow.

      @@unclebounce1495 This the beauty of art. Good art is subjective and each one enjoys it differently and receives the message they require. At least 15 people seem to agree with me.👍 You must have never heard the term "Healthy Fear" which is a survival INSTINCT. We fear for a reason. Its a healthy response to danger. The issue is what one does with that energy. The Fight or Flight response.
      That is the lesson learned here. In fact he felt fear when the group came just wanting to pass and saw it in THEIR eyes but instead of getting away (FLEEING)from danger by listening to that fear he and the tribe stayed and paid the price of ignoring that survival instinct and getting captured. In the end he saw the ships and used that fear to get away from danger.
      History does show that those who welcomed the ships instead of fearing them paid the biggest price. They were Conquered. Perhaps since his whole tribe was wiped out by ignoring the danger, he and his wife and child will be the new tribe that understand the value of fear and they will survive what is surely coming. This is my interpretation of this great film. Yours may be different.

    • @Friend_Of_The_Muse

      @@unclebounce1495 I spent awhile writing a rebuttal that was quite long and it disappeared. I must learn were i am I guess. I'll just say this. "The Fight or Flight response" Is a survival mechanism. Those wanting to pass through was the fear warning the tribe ignored and was destroyed for it. When he saw the ships he was fearful enough to move away from it while those who welcomed the ship were conquered. That is called a 'Healthy Fear" a natural response to danger.

    • @unclebounce1495
      @unclebounce1495 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Friend_Of_The_Muse Except all those statements are false. Those who welcomed the colonists were saved. The colonists, both spanish, and english (later), aided the oppressed/genocided people frequently against the evil powers that ruled them. And you said they ignored the "fear warning." They didn't. They were going to decide what to do. notice the ones who GAVE IN to their fear and fled (original tribe)... got caught, too? The false premise is that the tragedy was avoidable. That's the lie many tell themselves. You cannot avoid all hazards. Some, you must simply endure. They didn't ignore the warning sign. The father wasn't saying to ignore the warning sign. He was saying don't let fear take you. Fear causes you to act stupidly, always, never smartly. His father's plan was to discuss the danger calmly the next day with the camp elders and plan accordingly. Unfortunately, the attack was already upon them. nothing they could've done would've saved them, which is why the tribe that fled passed them were caught, too.

      The reality is very different and sad, here in Mexico (which is where the film takes place and was filmed) the indigenous and native languages are being lost, the few people who speak them are elderly and older people incapable of transmitting their knowledge, the foreigners They gentrify the territory more and more and with that they take away the culture itself and, most importantly, the languages. In schools they give priority to languages like French, English, etc., instead of the languages of our own country.

    Thank you both for watching this one! I saw this in theaters when I was a teenager all by myself and never ceased marveling at this film. It should've won Oscars for production design, costumes, makeup, you name it, including at least being nominated for Best Picture, but didn't do well at the box office due to Mel Gibson's personal and professional setbacks in his life at the time, and sadly that's the way it goes when you lose favor in an industry that operates on image and the politics of "what have you done for me lately though". He never went away, however, because I know you both saw Hacksaw Ridge a while ago which was a Mel movie that was nominated for a ton of Oscars, including Best Picture, and was a resounding comeback for the man.
    I don't agree with Mel Gibson on a lot of things he says but nobody can deny he's a masterful filmmaker with old school auteur approaches to storytelling and movie-making. One of my favorite things about this movie is the lack of dialogue. After the original attack on their village there are very few spoken words, which makes the times when there is dialogue much more poignant and the intensity of emotion is allowed to take over, just as it would if the viewer were in that situation. This movie is an absolute masterpiece

    An absolute masterpiece. Yes, it does become a bit of an action movie over the third act, but Gibson's immersion into a completely alien and inscrutable ancient culture is truly incredible. You're right that you haven't seen anything like it; and there hasn't been anything like it since. Also the subtle warning at the end as the Spanish Armada arrive in the bay, sure to destroy all the indigenous cultures with their guns, germs, and steel, is the perfect melancholy ending.

    In my DNA, I'm 18% Mayan/Apache, 68% Spaniard (Celtic, Basque) 8% Russian, 4% Finnish, 2% Neanderthal and we've done our over a thousand years back. There's lots of documents from New Spain (Mexico) and my Conquistador ancestors and the Basque region of Spain. My mom and her sister traveled to Spain to get copies of a lot of this stuff. You find out a lot of crazy stuff like an acestor pirate who built his 2 ships in Portugal and Holland and on the run from Spaniard authorities ( being a Spanish citizen) but they finally caught him and he died in a Barcelona prison. I have a long multiple page list of of his possessions when he was arrested.

    I believe the point with the Mother in law was that she called her son in law useless and worthless in the beginning in the movie. This was in the context of the small village culture. At the end now the guy she said was useless had a purpose in avenging the village and in the “big city” she was the one that was useless and she finally appreciates him.
