I have had great success with fasting. I started last year in March when I quit alcohol and did 16:8 most of the week, and added a monk fast every other weekend. I lost about 45lbs in 5 months doing this, in addition to 10k daily steps + strength training. I took an extended trip to SE Asia and fell off the fasting wagon, but ate mostly wholesome food, albeit more carbs than I was accustomed to in the US. I maintained my high step count and resistance training, but put on about 10lbs while I wasn't fasting. I'm now back in the US, it's much easier to fast here (since food costs 4-5x as much as it does in SE Asia) and I am already seeing solid results tiptoeing back into fasting. It really is a game changer, just gotta find a way to keep it up when surrounded by delicious and inexpensive cuisine while I travel.
Thank you Thomas, I have had some issues with my fasting. I’m a 67 yr old female. I weighed 130lbs but suspected I was insulin resistant, glucose and cholesterol were a little high. I started OMAD, no sugar, gluten, ate grass fed beef, eggs and veggies. My goal was to improve my numbers than to lose a lot of weight. However, I started losing more than I wanted, and even when I quit OMAD and did 16/8 I kept losing, down to 100 lbs. I am now trying to work my way back to a healthier weight but without sugars/starches it is tough. Conflicted because I want to continue some fasting just to give my body the break. I think I will try your suggestion and for me do 2 days a week, 2 meals a day, and no fasting the rest of the week. I really appreciate your integrity and open mindedness to new information.
I'm no scientist, but I've heard from multiple sources that the body is extremely good at being lazy. It really good at adapting. So switching your ''diet'' around actually keeps your body on its toes, and that is beneficial.
I have said this for years. I eat based on my activity level. If I'm hanging out with family, watching tv and lounging at the beach or pool I eat about 25% less than days I'm doing yard work and/or working out. If I'm doing a very activit day I will eat even more. That said I have been doing the carnivore diet so eating more for me means more eggs, meat and fat. I also only eat between 11am-4pm. My first meat is always lite. 1 egg and 3-4oz meat. I snack on salmon, shrimp or eggs in between if needed and a fat steak at 4pm. I take a few vitamins, only drink water and coffee and take apple cider vinegar every day. This lifestyle can be challenging for people but I've found that once you actually stick to a plan for a month is very easy. I struggled at first. I used to love bread! However I don't miss it anymore. I love how I feel!!!! Brother you have been a major influence for me along with a few doctors. Thank you and keep it up.
I actually was thinking that your life sounds pretty rigid and restrictive. But as long as you're happy, then you do you.... wouldn't be for everyone...lol
Great to see the Cell Matabolism study done and that you highlighted it. Earlier we thought that "fasting" groups just wound up being slightly calorically restricted overall, so we didn't know which practice yielded the benefits.
Amen. This obsession with different nutritional approaches have just become a new form of religion for its followers. I’m always amazed at you, Thomas you always bring study after study to support your views, but you never mention all of the studies that don’t support your views. To the authors of those studies with different conclusions, they feel their study is the accurate one.

I do restricted eating 6 days a week, at between about 18 and 20 hours. I have big meal and a smaller 'snack' meal later . Works for me. Doing it 6 times a week, means if i want to have the odd additional meal , its not a big deal at all. Never hungry , still eating similar amounts of calories and gradually losing weight and have watched BP drop from around 180/118 to around 120/70 (pulse 55). Weight 233Llb to 190Llb.
I have been following you since you first discovered keto. And, I find my lifestyle choices seem to mirror your evolution, even though I am not really "following" you. I must be evolving at the same rate, or something. Love the fasting and feasting. It works great for my wife and me.
Had the same exprience, I tried everything, been on this journey for 2 years. Whole Foods, thought that Keto could not be possible the answer. Result on Whole Foods and dietetician advice I gained weight. Even though I did strength training and calorie restriction of 2000 kcal for 183cm big bone male who lifts 4x a week. Nothing, I could not lose weight, no matter what I did! I was also always hungry in the morning! I now tried Keto and OMAD and 16/8h fasting I been losing weight feeling full and not counting calories! Not waking up hungry! I lost 20kg in 3 months! Now I am starting to incorporate 2-3 days fasts 😊
This reminds me of the study referenced by Satchin Panda, PhD in his book The Circadian Code. They took genetically identical mice and split into 2 groups. Both were fed the same high fat, high sugar diet (bad). One group was allowed to graze and eat whenever they wanted. Group 2 was restricted to an 8-hour feeding window. Group 1 got all sorts of health problems (fatty liver, obesity, etc), but Group 2 did not. They even showed how eating the same meal, but at different times of the day gave different insulin responses (later in the day had higher insulin response).
I think Weston A. Price's research from global travel and studying "primitive" cultures in his book Nutrition and Physical Degeneration is some of the best nutritional info ever. Now the Weston A. Price Foundation is headed up by Sally Fallon. She wrote a book called Nourishing Traditions with Mary Enig based on his work. It's fantastic. This is where Jordan Rubin got most of his info for his book The Maker's Diet, which is also excellent.
That's sounds very interesting, I'm guessing there thing is about eating with the circadium rhythm. Be interesting to do it again and change the times, but keep the eating window and see what happens

How would an ancient wild human eat? They'd walk around until they found something to eat (obviously an organic whole food). Then they'd rest, play, craft tools and shelters and sleep. Then they'd wander around again until they found food... maybe an hour, a day or a couple days before getting something large enough to be a meal again. Rinse and repeat. This "wild" lifestyle is exactly what random fasting would mimic.
Hey Thomas do you still recommend doing keto with IF to reach your weight loss goal? What about Ben Azadi’s keto flex plan? Which is 5 days of keto with 18/6 1 day 24 hour fast then followed by a feast day with 100-150g of carbs. I’m 39 years old 6’ tall large build been lifting off and on for 20 years currently weigh 268lbs and would like to get to 225lbs. I don’t get huge fat loss with keto and IF like a lot of people do. Been doing keto/keto for about 4 months daily 18/6 fasting and being really active and have only lost a few lbs.
I cant eat veg without throwing up and feeling like crap so i can't do this, am a carnivore an eat as much as I want until I am stuffed then don't eat til am hungry , either omad or 2mad
I have a question...is a dry fast once a week beneficial, or does it give me diminishing returns? During the week I eat two nutrient dense meals with plenty of calories (not restricting) and then Saturdays is my play day, anything goes. Sundays I fast without water and food to allow my body the time and space to clean house. It seems like the right thing to do, and it feels okay.
Long time no see Thomas - hope you and your family are doing well. The only way I get to seriously fast, is naturally when I'm ill, like the other day. Didn't feel hungry for a meal for at least 24 hours. Influenza type chills and heat. Took my natural supplements and enough liquid. Started to feel better after sleeping as much as I needed. I have done what you suggest before, on a monthly basis - if you recall me telling you, a monthly '1 bad food day' and IMF keto for the rest of the month. Worked, until I started feeling a lack. Now I'm back on meat and I hate to say it, I feel better eating chicken and ground fed beef. STILL addicted to high carbs. So difficult to stay on the straight and narrow, but fasting, seems to be a 'trick' if you busy yourself with physical work and occupying the mind with something purposeful. (I like OMAD with meat, keto and the one day a month still best for me) Wishing you all safe and well. 💪💪💪
This is exactly how I have honed in my fasting protocol. I fast Monday- Wednesday- Friday and eat whole foods the other days. This is what Ive been doing for 2 years after doing it in keto for about 3 years then eating normal weekends. All from your information Thomas. Best regards, Tomas. 😂
This is interesting, especially because I'm fasting right now and can't wait to feast tomorrow. But if you alternate feasting/fasting, when is the best time to work out? HIIT on feast days? End of the fast? And zone 2 on fasting days?
autophagy is the way. problem is for rats their metabolism is crazy so 24 hours is like a week for us. Regardless the monkey and animal studies show just even the 16:8 fast made them insanely healthier compared to the control. allowing the body to heal is the way
I had done 3 years of IF every day religiously. Brought my body fat down to around 12%. All of a sudden I started gaining weight again. Started eating normally again on weekends and voilà......the weight started decreasing again. That was 3 years ago..... Been at a stable bodyweight ever since.
Hold on a second. If the caloric restricted group and the fasting group both ended up with the same number of total calories and the same life span enhancements - how do you determine the fasting had any result at all???
Clearly, the takeaway from the information is to do what suits an individual's lifestyle the best. If you find restricting calories easier than fasting then do that. And if you have an easier time just fasting for 20+ hours instead of counting calories then go ahead and do that. 👍
i understand that fasting 20 hours every other day and eat a whole food diet is healthy. but when im doing a 3 day or more water fast i am trying to get further benefits like bdnf or stem cell production. i doubt the same happens with the first "method".
This has never worked for me. I realized a year ago that I had been fasting since middle school. I never wanted break fast before school. For me to lose weight I had to exercise until I would burn my adrenals or just eat less during fasting. I have no general known problems now other than being hypothyroid. But under control and mainly why I have been able to take off lbs again. The biggest thing I also was getting GOOD sleep. I was a 5am person but realized I'm a night owl and I can try and go to sleep at 9 and just lay there until 12ish or so until I fall asleep. 3 hours of laying around. So, I'm lucky enough to not have to get up until 8-9.
Just like exercise, dieting is done for different reasons. Weight loss, autophagy, hormone balance etc. I would recommend being healthier. Hard fast if you aren’t moving much (during the week at work in the office). 16:8 then 20:4 if you’re trying to lose weight.. Horses for courses
I try to fast as long as I can between 24hrs - 72hrs weekly depending on how my body feels and what my body can do. And then I break that fast with a few days of feasting on whole foods until I need to / feel like I want to fast again or reset my body.
6:15 how about that 2 meals a day for the over 40-50s ?! I'm so used to my brunch at 10am then last meal at 14h, and yes I do eat clean, all the calories and nutrition I need. But of course I'm opened for what happens if I'm invited to dinner or if I feel unexpected hungry I will eat
I've been on IF for 4 years. Get hungry everything. To make it a tad easier, i always eat a good portion of chicken or fish before I start fasting. When I don't, I know fasting will be tough that day.
I eat once a day and I eat calories according to my activity level so between 2300-3500 cals a day depending on what I’m doing and I’m a carnivore so it’s pretty simple really my body decides what it needs.
to me, this would be mimicking how people in the distant past ate . One or two food intakes a day and lots of time in between meals. Its easy enough to do if you are single and do not have kids to feed. For me, drastically reducing carbs lead to my osteo arthritis going into complete remission. I started to eat more crabs around Jan. Now in April my hips are screaming and im in constant pain. BREAD is really difficult for me to give up entirely. But pain is a great motivator. ugh.
What is a 21 hour mouse fast in human time? Most humans can survive well over a month without food, a mouse is dead in a few of days if you don't feed it. On this scale you'd be looking at a week to a fortnight of fasting. A mouse heart beats around 12 times per second, compared to our 1. On this scale you're also around 10 days.
Actually on carnivore you don’t get hungry even while working hard . I don’t agree you miss out on fun or nutrition eating once a day you instead gain time and maybe you need a mindset shift and try it.
The former face of fasting, Peter Attia now says he finds ZERO benefit in being in a fasted state. But he's spent years on just about every diet, and espoused all their benefits till he changed his mind, so I take everything he says with a grain of salt cause it will be completely different in 2 years. As for rodent studies, idk how a 21 hour fast for a rat that lives 2 years and a 21 hour fast for a human who will live 80 is remotely comparable. 21 hours for a rat is more equivalent to a 7 day fast for a human.
24 hour fasting for a mouse is an enormous amount of time. A mouse will die in 2-4 days without food. A human will last at least that many weeks or more. So, your 24 hour mouse fast is actually more like 1-2 weeks of fasting for a human. Give or take.

Thomas I am sure you don’t read these messages, but I castigated you for changing every opinion and advice you have ever given 4. 1/2 years ago when I got my Wife to watch you when she was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer. She died but I continued and I am Carnivore 3 years. It made the difference in my mental health and got me off my last 2 medications Xanax and OxyContin . I got off 8 medications and no longer have Degenerative Disc Disease after 33 years. No longer disabled. Every illness was due to the standard American diet. Your still a grifter selling his goods giving information from awful studies. I was involved in the first intermittent fasting experiments with rats from 83-85 with Kevin Seybold at UWM- Milwaukee. Under Dr. Eisman. I did all the work in the experiment washing out the food on half the rats through cannula. Then weighing and comparing the control to the group with food removed.
I was 22 at the time I am 63 now. It wasn’t until 3 years into my intermittent fasting that I remembered that I did the experiment. I fought to have my name on it until 1985 when Dr. Eisman was fired and charged with touching and cumming on 3 Female Students. One of the Girls was an old Girlfriend that married my best friend in 86. II forgot about it. I also did water satiation experiments where rats where weighed and put in with licking air or water through water / air container. I do remember that the rats getting just the air believed they received the water and were satiated. Dave Reynold did the experiment under Dr. Eisman. Sorry, I went back with my autobiographical memory and relived everything, but I really just did it to get 12 credits if A’s to graduate. Did not try to understand at the time. Smoked pot and drank everyday back then to stop my memory. Mary Lou Henner from Taxi show is the only other person that I know of that diagnosed with this. 20 in the world. Spent 40 years at 4-5 shrinks to live with this condition🤪

I always kept roadblocks up so I would not relive my life. After my Father died and my Wife died in the same year the blocking my past was impossible. It took two years to get the blocking back up and continue life alone. Never been happier. The loneliness bullshit they keep putting out there is crazy. I was the most sociable person alive. Now I talk to two people a month and my life is wonderful😀
I get that researchers use mice and rodents but how are they similar to human systems? These should be researched on human beings who are looking to fast and lose weight, etc. Idk maybe I’m overthinking how research is done. I’d rather see humans who are actually doing this and what their results are to give me a realistic idea of what to expect instead of some rats who have a whole different mechanism and are clearly a different species.
They’re not similar to us. We use them because they’re extremely easy and genetically homogenous for experiments. Much simpler to measure lifespan in something that doesn’t live very long and much simpler to compare results between organisms that are unremarkable clones of each other

How would an ancient wild human eat? They'd walk around until they found something to eat (obviously an organic whole food). Then they'd rest, play, craft tools and shelters and sleep. Then they'd wander around again until they found food... maybe an hour, a day or a couple days before getting something large enough to be a meal again. Rinse and repeat. This "wild" lifestyle is exactly what random fasting would mimic.
Hey Thomas do you still recommend doing keto with IF to reach your weight loss goal? What about Ben Azadi’s keto flex plan? Which is 5 days of keto with 18/6 1 day 24 hour fast then followed by a feast day with 100-150g of carbs. I’m 39 years old 6’ tall large build been lifting off and on for 20 years currently weigh 268lbs and would like to get to 225lbs. I don’t get huge fat loss with keto and IF like a lot of people do. Been doing keto/keto for about 4 months daily 18/6 fasting and being really active and have only lost a few lbs.
I’ve been doing it this way and it’s legit! I’m enjoying healthy food more and feeling very liberated during my fasts.

During the week I eat two nutrient dense meals with plenty of calories (not restricting) and then Saturdays is my play day, anything goes.
Sundays I fast without water and food to allow my body the time and space to clean house.

Long time no see Thomas - hope you and your family are doing well. The only way I get to seriously fast, is naturally when I'm ill, like the other day. Didn't feel hungry for a meal for at least 24 hours. Influenza type chills and heat. Took my natural supplements and enough liquid. Started to feel better after sleeping as much as I needed. I have done what you suggest before, on a monthly basis - if you recall me telling you, a monthly '1 bad food day' and IMF keto for the rest of the month. Worked, until I started feeling a lack. Now I'm back on meat and I hate to say it, I feel better eating chicken and ground fed beef. STILL addicted to high carbs. So difficult to stay on the straight and narrow, but fasting, seems to be a 'trick' if you busy yourself with physical work and occupying the mind with something purposeful. (I like OMAD with meat, keto and the one day a month still best for me)

i understand that fasting 20 hours every other day and eat a whole food diet is healthy. but when im doing a 3 day or more water fast i am trying to get further benefits like bdnf or stem cell production. i doubt the same happens with the first "method".

This has never worked for me. I realized a year ago that I had been fasting since middle school. I never wanted break fast before school. For me to lose weight I had to exercise until I would burn my adrenals or just eat less during fasting. I have no general known problems now other than being hypothyroid. But under control and mainly why I have been able to take off lbs again. The biggest thing I also was getting GOOD sleep. I was a 5am person but realized I'm a night owl and I can try and go to sleep at 9 and just lay there until 12ish or so until I fall asleep. 3 hours of laying around. So, I'm lucky enough to not have to get up until 8-9.
Just like exercise, dieting is done for different reasons. Weight loss, autophagy, hormone balance etc. I would recommend being healthier. Hard fast if you aren’t moving much (during the week at work in the office). 16:8 then 20:4 if you’re trying to lose weight.. Horses for courses

I try to fast as long as I can between 24hrs - 72hrs weekly depending on how my body feels and what my body can do. And then I break that fast with a few days of feasting on whole foods until I need to / feel like I want to fast again or reset my body.

I've been on IF for 4 years. Get hungry everything. To make it a tad easier, i always eat a good portion of chicken or fish before I start fasting. When I don't, I know fasting will be tough that day.

I eat once a day and I eat calories according to my activity level so between 2300-3500 cals a day depending on what I’m doing and I’m a carnivore so it’s pretty simple really my body decides what it needs.
to me, this would be mimicking how people in the distant past ate . One or two food intakes a day and lots of time in between meals. Its easy enough to do if you are single and do not have kids to feed.
For me, drastically reducing carbs lead to my osteo arthritis going into complete remission. I started to eat more crabs around Jan. Now in April my hips are screaming and im in constant pain. BREAD is really difficult for me to give up entirely. But pain is a great motivator. ugh.
I love vacation I eat 2 meals a day and then when I go home I go fasting mode. It’s a sweet spot for me. And no exercise either.

24 hour fasting for a mouse is an enormous amount of time. A mouse will die in 2-4 days without food. A human will last at least that many weeks or more.
So, your 24 hour mouse fast is actually more like 1-2 weeks of fasting for a human. Give or take.

Thomas I am sure you don’t read these messages, but I castigated you for changing every opinion and advice you have ever given 4. 1/2 years ago when I got my Wife to watch you when she was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer. She died but I continued and I am Carnivore 3 years. It made the difference in my mental health and got me off my last 2 medications Xanax and OxyContin . I got off 8 medications and no longer have Degenerative Disc Disease after 33 years. No longer disabled. Every illness was due to the standard American diet. I was 22 at the time I am 63 now. It wasn’t until 3 years into my intermittent fasting that I remembered that I did the experiment. One of the Girls was an old Girlfriend that married my best friend in 86. II forgot about it. I also did water satiation experiments where rats where weighed and put in with licking air or water through water / air container. I do remember that the rats getting just the air believed they received the water and were satiated. Dave Reynold did the experiment under Dr. Eisman. Sorry, I went back with my autobiographical memory and relived everything, but I really just did it to get 12 credits if A’s to graduate. Did not try to understand at the time. Smoked pot and drank everyday back then to stop my memory. Mary Lou Henner from Taxi show is the only other person that I know of that diagnosed with this. 20 in the world. Spent 40 years at 4-5 shrinks to live with this condition🤪

I always kept roadblocks up so I would not relive my life. After my Father died and my Wife died in the same year the blocking my past was impossible. It took two years to get the blocking back up and continue life alone. Never been happier. The loneliness bullshit they keep putting out there is crazy. I was the most sociable person alive. Now I talk to two people a month and my life is wonderful😀

I get that researchers use mice and rodents but how are they similar to human systems? These should be researched on human beings who are looking to fast and lose weight, etc. Idk maybe I’m overthinking how research is done. I’d rather see humans who are actually doing this and what their results are to give me a realistic idea of what to expect instead of some rats who have a whole different mechanism and are clearly a different species.
They’re not similar to us. We use them because they’re extremely easy and genetically homogenous for experiments. Much simpler to measure lifespan in something that doesn’t live very long and much simpler to compare results between organisms that are unremarkable clones of each other
You can’t do longevity research on humans as you have to wait to see how long they live - this could take 100+ years. 🤦♂️
