Ron is a member of the NASCAR Hall of Fame and named one of its 75 greatest drivers. He was hired to race trucks by Dale Earnhardt in 1995 and is well known for driving the NAPA Auto Parts 16 truck. He later assisted a young Kevin Harvick and Jimmie Johnson with their own transitions to NASCAR world. After a couple years between AJ Foyt's cup car and RCR in the Busch Series, Ron eventually went to race for Kevin's KHI truck team in the famous 33 where he found massive success and cemented his legend status. Unlike many retired drivers of the golden era, Ron never changed who he was after retirement. He continues to fabricate race cars along with some hot rods for the street while mentoring the next generation of racers on and off the track.

If you enjoy this video don’t forget to hit the thumbs up! I think there needs to be another Ron Hornaday type guy in the truck series. Do you?

I absolutely agree!
@@Cobra-Scott The series lost its soul when the veteran presence went away. Those guys were the gatekeepers and benchmark for younger guys. It made a great dynamic to the overall show. I do love the truck series and want that to come back. Even if I have to go be that guy myself in 10 years 😂
Only makes sense to go with Jack Sprague. After you have met with Skinner & Hornaday.
Preserving NASCAR, racing history and its people and what it came from before it gets forgotten or rewritten, like most of history has.
The
One of my all time favorite drivers!
Hell yes we appreciate y’all and what you’re doing ! Thank you
Thank you Craig!
Love seeing his 97 car with Saugus speedway backstretch grandstands behind it.
Ron got Kevin Harvick in too,They are still good friends to this day
Glad to see Ron is still active in racing.
Ron Horniday has always been one of my favorite Truck Series Drivers, I'd see him occasionally in NASCAR NW Tour (Late Model) & Winston West races at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe WA before the Truck Series started.......Ron is in a class like Kenny 'Special K' Shrader and Kenny Wallace, Guys who love working on their stuff as well!
Way back in the late 50's or early 60's we used to go to Saugus speedway to watch the races and his dad was one of the drivers. Someone I went with was friends of the Hornadays and would chear him on. They would meet on the infield after the races. I was pretty young then so the memory is foggy now. I saw a Saugus speedway picture on the wall in this video and it jogged my memory.
Raced against Ron in the Southwest Tour back in 1992. Great times!
Once again, you have the best NASCAR content on YT. One of my favorite Truck guys.
Thanks man!
This man is the mentor to mentors,
Well said
Hornaday is the real deal, the epitome of a true bad ass racer. Hornaday and his family opened their doors and played an instrumental part in so many racers careers, drivers and crew guys. Great stuff!
Just seen Ron Hornaday this past Saturday at All American Speedway in Onslow County NC. He was supporting Keelan Harvick who raced that street stock for the first time. Keelan also won a thriller in the Legends car!
It's Mike Cameron, I worked for NAPA during the NAPA heyday. NAPA got more exposure from Ron than anything else we ever did. He got about 25% of what Michael
got as far as sponsorship goes. I knew Ron personally I orally and did get invited to the motor home for steak.
I have said this before. But, THANK YOU and Logan for preserving history.
That Chevy LUV is friggin cool!
I can imagine myself driving something like that to work every day....
Ron was a local hero in California when I was a kid . Good to see an update on him !
As a kid in the 90's my dad was a manager at the local Napa store so Ron was my favorite driver when I first got into racing. Years later when he drove for Harvick got me back into the truck series! Ron was and always will be my favorite truck driver!
Loved Ron Hornaday.
He was my favorite driver in the Truck Series
I dont know when you actually made this video but Im watching it on 4 16 24 and last weekend Keelan Harvick came in second in that car in his very first race in a full size car great job Mitchell and kudos to Ron for building a great car for him
We filmed this 1 week before that race!
Pretty cool Ron’s building car for Keelan 🏁😎🏁
Imagine Hornaday driving the #15 from 2001 to 2005 and wondering what could've been
Probably would have changed the course of DEI. I don't know if it would still be around but it sure would have been different
Dale more or likely doesn't come up with his plan for one of his drivers to win at Daytona, and finishes yet another 500 in a long and happy career. Wins the '01 championship to beat out Richard Petty for an 8th and final championship, gains a few more wins, and retires in 2003 to pursue road course racing at LeMans and elsewhere with his own Corvette division of DEI. Junior wins the 500 and a couple championships, and continues to drive for his father's team, now the flagship team for Chevrolet in NASCAR.
What could have been...
you stole my thought 😆
Before Dale Earnhardt died Ron Fellows of Canada signed on to drive for DEI in 2002 but the 2001 Daytona 500 kept it from happening
Still hurts my heart , 23 years later.
I was a customer of Victory Circle back in the 90's before he got the Truck ride. I bought front clips and then built the rest of the chassis to . Their stuff like he said, was dominant. I believe the story is he acquired VC from Ivan Baldwin when he was hired by Bill Elliot to run their short track program and moved to NC.
Ron is the man!❤
I originally came for sleeper Escalade, yello belly shenanigans had me hooked.
And somehow or another it turned into one of the best racing history channels around.
Would love to see the Monte Carlo, uncle Rob, the white big block obs, or the blue Escalade.....but your sure making quality content in the mean time.
Thanks man! Those will be back in due time. Uncle Rob will be the next project once I get the GNSS car going
Oh hell yes. This video is another great example of the rich NASCAR history out there!
I can remember vividly in the early to mid-1980's watching Ron Hornaday race his late model modified car out at Saugus Speedway in Saugus, CA, just a local 3/8 mile asphalt oval, but he jumped right into some hellacious battles on the track Friday or Saturday nights between competitors there! Never a dull moment. This guy was always a natural driving anything, won his fair share of trophy dashes, and a well-spoken guy on top of that too. A good friend of mine was on the pit crew up there at the speedway at that time, so we always got tickets to the races, maybe the occasional pit pass or 1st-hand info on the latest scuttlebutt & such, those were damn good times, me being in my mid-20's then(almost your age now, Mitch)and a huge crazy streak combined with the need for speed and love of anything motorsports related. It was f'n' badass!
Thank you Mitch & Logan for another outstanding production with this video, right there with you guys and appreciating this stuff all the way! You rock!
I spent a lot of time racing at Saugus Speedway back in the 80's...... rt up until it closed
Ron is that guy……
Thanks y’all
I know that all you do to get these videos out are a lot of work, time, traveling, editing etc.... I just wanted to let you know that I personally appreciate all that you do!!! Your videos are very entertaining and very educational. You are documenting a lot of history that would be lost without your hard work!!! I have been a fan of Nascar since 1975 when I saw my first race. But through your videos I learned a lot of things that I didn't know. Thank you again for all your hard work. Also, you have a wonderful partner that supports and encourages your passion!!! I can't wait to see your race car finished!!!
I don't always comment but i have left a like on every video since you painted Coopers garage ceiling.
You're the man!
I sat with Ron at a dinner fundraiser years ago (when he was the big dog in the truck series). I was impressed with how down to earth he was. He never let his career success go to his head. He had to feed his family, and he always treated racing as his day job and took it very seriously.
Dude! I have always LOVED Hornaday! King of the restart!!!!
50 of Ron’s 51 Truck Series wins came from either Dale Earnhardt Inc, or Kevin Harvick Inc.
What was the 1 outlier?
@@Stapleton42 Xpress Motorsports at Homestead '02.
By the way, considering Hornaday's GM loyalty, I have to ask. If he still raced today, do you think Ron would've driven for Kyle Busch Motorsports after they switched to Chevy?
@@crystaljonif you want my opinion yes he would . being taken out on caution lap by kyle didn't surprise Ron and knew Kevin Harvick would take care of any retaliation. After Kyle was suspended from all remaining events ,that seasons Kevin backed off. I think Ron might have driven sooner and drive a Toyota that late in his career if offered. By the time KBM switched to Chevy Ron needed a billionaire Daddy to run trucks. JMO
@@crystaljon no!!!
When Ronnie owned Victory Circle and was running the Southwest Tour, Lindy would watch all us kids at the track while our dad's raced.
Hello Stapleton42. You've done it again. What an incredible video. Its really fascinating to see that Ron is keeping so many memories and history alive in one small building .As a car guy I wish I be with you guys on your'e trips and videos. Or be invited by you guys. & a reminder, don't forget to do a video with Rick Hendrick and Jeff Gordon together at the Hendrick Motorsports facility and Museum in Concord. And to Ron Horaday. Never forget where you came from. & you too Stapleton. Shelton Smith shouting out from the Queen City/ Charlotte NC.
thanks man! I would love to do a video like that
Man Ron Hornaday is a cool guy and a racer miss that style of race car drivers
Ron is that guy…..
Thanks y’all
He is so down to earth. Always was a class act and still is.
Met Hornaday a couple of times. One of the coolest guys out there. And a genius when it comes to cars.
Mitchell I love the content you and logan put out. i'm one of the old heads that liveed through the peak of Nascar 70's 80's 90's I love it you find the old guys to interview you need to do Donnie for sure
Great guy ! Have a friend that was on his Napa crew & he would take us to parties at Rons lake house. He & Lindy were always so humble & gracious to everybody !
Hornadays connections are amazing! Last of a dying breed that knew how to build them from the ground up , and that’s the advantage he and a few others had , they were into it totally , not like the nerds of today that bought their way into the sport .
Really hope you can hook up with Donnie Allison , he seems to be a real character!
Thanks guys for your dedication to bringing top shelf material every time!
Thanks man! We do need to set something up with Donnie!
You've kinda re kindled my interest in nascar. These videos send me down memory lane with my family on Sunday. Dad Makin breakfast, watching the show Trucks! in the morning, and then we all sat down to watch the races. Thanks for what you do my guy!
Heck that’s what happened to me. Went down memory lane and ended up staying 😂
Same but for the dirt racing, not the modern day all cars are the same, all u need is $250,000 to get started. LOL.
@@lpe655 Yeah I wish there were an affordable yet entertaining way to go circle track racing. Even street stock is not as attainable as drag racing for the average guy.
Great video Ole Ron is about as humble as could be. A true racer and gentlemen.
Hell of a channel.
I had some west coast regular guys to help crew and adjust on my car at Cajon. They had traveled with Hornaday when he started out. I loved the atmosphere of short track racing on the west coast. It was a different vibe than the southeast where I came from.
Folks got along better and were all down to Earth. Met and raced with great folks while out there
I knew Ron back when I worked on a Southwest Tour car in 1989. Alway a fun guy to be around.
Thank you for sharing Ron Hornaday story I was a big fan of him I have his diecast napa truck.
Was good to see Ron Hornaday still helping drivers and to see him doing stuff with Kevin I was a fan of him and Skinner and enjoyed watching him race for Dale Sr and when he raced for KHI he is a racer
Honestly, I hit the thumbs up before the video really starts
I played a few poker games in that shop. Back when Ron was racing, and his father in law lived at that house. Ron would put on a poker game night about once a week, and when we would come to town, we would get invited to play. Mostly to lose my money. That’s probably why I was invited as I sucked at poker! lol! But it was still fun hanging out. Great story, one of the guys sitting at my table playing. I asked how he knew Ron? He said he worked at the pizza shop and was the delivery guy that brought pizzas to the poker games. Ron invited him to play, but he couldn’t as he was always delivering pizzas that night. He found another job so he had the nights off and could come play poker with Ron & his friends. You never knew what guys would be there?
That’s awesome 😂
Great tour of Ron's shop. Brought back great memories from our visits to Ron's place. Especially the neon sign 'live everyday like it's Saturday night ' sign.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Always had greatest respect for Ron H... he was the quintessential every man racer who got a shot and made the most of it. Heck of a race car driver... So story time... back in 1993 Dunn Benson Ford brought his buddy Jack Sprague to our local track in Robersonville NC to claim a 5K bounty on late model driver Jim Kelly that we built engines for.... We had won like 14 straight races there. The regular driver for Dunn Benson ran 2nd or 3rd every week and they had the best stuff money could buy for the time. We got a call from Doug Y (their engines came from Eatmon and they were tight with the Yates origination through their Bush engine development) that they had gone and got Jack to come drive their car and beat us... At any rate it was a big deal but in the end he didn't get it done and finished a very close 2nd.... After 20 straight, they just paid Jim the bounty to stay home one night...LoL. The Dunn Benson guys were so mad. Now Jack was true gentlemen, drove us clean and shook our hands that night but there was word Dunn Benson were gonna get another nationally known driver to come and drive that car... Ron H's name was one of a few that were mentioned in the next few weeks.... which really would have been awesome as I was and still am a huge fan of his but, after talking with a friend in the known he said that would never happen because Ron probably wouldn't ever drive a Ford...Ron was running awesome in the SW Tour that year and truthfully probably just didn't have time but it would have been awesome if they could have bought him to try and outrun us that season. Awesome interview thanks for getting him on.
You two your wife has done a lot for the history of NASCAR really appreciate what you have done I’m about Ron’s age and haven’t seen him in years so thanks for sharing your videos have you ever done one with Mike Skinner anyway thanks again
Yes we have! Check the video list or search for it!
Thanks I’ll look for it keep up your great work your car is coming along
Great content again, thank you 😊. And I always liked Ron Horneday , he was my favorite Chevy driver in the truck series
Love this video! Being from CA, Hornaday was the man. My first race was Sonoma in 95. The day before the Cup race, I watched Hornaday run the Southwest tour race and he won by a whole lap on the field. That's when I became an instant fan and wanted a #16 Papa Johns Pizza Racing hat.
Mitchell and Logan, thanks for another A+ video. So grateful!!
Thanks Ryan!
Sure enjoy hearing from the older generation of drivers like Ron. He married the daughter of his father's fiercest rival - Wow! Thank you for bringing these stories to light.
Wild Bill Foster was a Saugus legend....
We raced against Ron back in the day at Saugus Speedway, Mesa Marin, El Cajon and other tracks around SoCal. Great video!!
Ron is amazing, he has done it all and loves his life. Thank you two once again for another great video. God bless you both.
Yeah man Ron is the man great video.
Ron Hornaday, real car guy! Great video!
Thanks man!
Met him years ago when I was crewing in the truck series. His daughter was married to Rick McCrays son.He was on Jimmie Johnsons crew at the time. The real deal
Ron is such a cook guy! Great job, Mitchell and Logan!
Hello, Luv your shows and you guys rock!! I am 72 and have been a NASCAR fan since I was about 10. Ron Hornaday was one of my favorites along with Mike Skinner. Keep up the great work and would luv to know more about the car your going to race and where you are going to race. Videos on that will be very interesting. John
thank you John!
I met Ron in Atlanta and got his autograph he was super nice. My wife at the time had a pen that looked like a shot and we had a good laugh. Pretty cool.
Trucks are still the best. I got to meet him and his son at jennerstown speedway when he was driving the Napa truck. Nice guys.
Thank You for posting this, I really enjoyed it.
Just watched the Ronnie Thomas episode from February.
But I watch pretty much all your older episodes, Picked up a boom tube T-Shirt too. I love what you two are doing
thanks man!!
Thanks Mitchell and Logan, Ron was and is the man
Ron is without a doubt the only reason that the truck series made it as it did.As for u two going around putting in work great job...Can't wait to watch the video on your car...
Always liked Ron. He seems like a real one.
Met him at all American Speedway at one of my legend car races really cool guy.
One of the Best NASCAR CHANNELS ON TH-cam!!! THANKYOU FOR WHAT YALL ARE DOING !!! GOD BLESS !!!
Ide give anything to see veterans again running. Trucks!!! Loved Hornaday!
Great video. Miss how the racing used to be with these guys. Setzer, Hornaday, Andy Houston, Biffle, Kvapil man that was some great racing back then.
Love hearing these stories about Wayne Spears. He was my wife’s uncle, crazy to think I’m married into the family that brought legends like Kevin Harvick into NASCAR. He sadly passed last year in September. Every time I hear the name, see the pictures or merch, or hear one of these legendary driver speak the name, I can’t believe I’m in the family! lol
The Truck series started out fantastic running mostly short tracks and you never knew who would show up to race and the races were always good racing period then NASCAR started changes with needing big money and longer tracks started to kill off what made it magic and next thing no short tracks and high dollar pit crews and it was all just another expensive feeder series. When Hornaday and Skinner and Carrelli and others started it out just a great time to watch races glad I did get to see them.
Another awesome one!!! Thank you!! I also forgot Ron was paired a while with Fred Graves. Fred's a iconic guy in my neighborhood. Ran Supermodifieds at Oswego Speedway built a bunch of winning ones too!! Cool he mentioned that. Miss the old truck series.
Thanks Again for another video of one of NASCAR'S Legends. Ron is one of my favorites. Thanks for doing a video on him.🏁
Galpin Ford has an Amazing History. Love Ron and Family. Thanks for Talking with him.
I miss seeing this man on track so much. Someone needs to give him one final ride in a top truck because got screwed by Turner in 2014
I would love to see him run again
Ron is one of my favorites. Great video
I have always liked Ron. He is just a racer. It doesn't matter what kind of vehicle it is, just let him in and turn him lose. Great video. Thanks again.
Thanks Larry!
I grew up watching Hornaday at Saugus Speedway. Make no mistake, he is a racing icon out here on the west coast. I later got to meet him through my friend who knows him and drives a race car himself. Nice guy and us fans of his are super proud of his accomplishments. #HornadayROCKS
We definitely need a part 2! Ron in the wild would be the best aka working on ur car with u!!
COOL seeing KISS, they used to be Australian 😂 all the best to you all
Without a doubt one of the best movies you have made. . . The mans appears to have all his Faculties.
And it's still working like you said to this day Helping young folks or anyone worthy birthday intwoe racing
Looking forward to the GNSS build series.
A living legend!
I have always liked Ron Hornaday, he tells you everything straight the way it's supposed to be, not sugar coated. Very Kool interview, thanks for sharing !
Ron is the most successful Nascar truck series racer I knew very little about. Thank You so much for the education. Ron seems like a really down to earth guy. Thank You so much for all these videos!!!
Thank you for being here for it!
Always liked Ron...raced tough and didn't take any garbage.... Victory Circle made some really good dirt late model chassis too...glad to see this video, I have been wondering what he has been up to...nice job...Good to see you Ron!
Always enjoyed Ron. Remember meeting him once at Nashville fairgrounds or speedway. Honestly can’t remember. Super nice guy. Was one of my favorites in truck series.
Duuuude hell yes! I've been waiting for the day he showed up on this channel! Thank yall for doing all of this❤
Ron, you are one of my very favorite drivers and so glad you are still cooking..! I remember my cousin racing against you in the Winston West Series and the Copper Classic in Arizona… ! You sold the big house on the lake and moved to ?? You wont find a bigger CHEVROLET POWER guy than me so glad to hear you are still a big BOWTIE man… ! You brought back a lot of memories talking about Dale EARNHARDT my all time favorite CUP driver ! Well im so glad you and family are doing well …! God bless …! 💪 🏁🏁🏁🇺🇸
Always had ton of respect for this Gentleman. Funny story….2001 his son was racing @ IRP in the truck series. I was driving a thunder truck for a guy who was a big fan of RH Jr. So much the truck I drove @ LMS was #16 with the Napa blue paint scheme. Ron lll had a bad night and crashed the truck. After the race I went and asked for the hood off the crashed truck and he even autographed it !!! Next race we were in line for inspection and an empty water battle hits me in the back of head. Here’s Ron laughing and says I gave you the hood not the damned teathers. From that day forward I could expect a water bottle anytime he saw me……
I love Ron Hornaday!!
It's cool to see what these guys still have and do. Its even better that you're gifting these to us via youtube. Thanks!
Ron Hornady is a great race car driver--glad you toured his shop. I've been a fan of his since his connection to Kevin. Thx! BTW great paint job on the 42 car
I'm so glad you guys got into that 76 Luv, the moment you guys all walked into the shop i caught the back window and 3 b pillar slots and was like that's a V8 Luv under that car lift. I was willing your camera outta the bathroom towards that truck and then BAM!
when Ron was truck racin in the beginning,,i never missed one cause we knew sheet metal would be flyin and sparks every race,,,,,super great racing everytime Ron and Skinner were showin up !!!!
I'm a fan of the old racing being Darrel Waltirp my favorite. Really liked to old GMC truck you had with some of his old stuff in it. Got close one time in Texas to meet him but couldn't make it happen. I would just love to talk to him one time. I follow your video's there all pretty cool. Keep up the good work.
thanks mike!
Ron is one of my favorites!!!
