Classic NASCAR Stock Cars Take Road Atlanta: Racing Hard and Mistakes Were Made

- Every year the Historic Sportscar Racing group hosts The Mitty at Road Atlanta. Today we went to check out the NASCAR Stock Car class that had something like 38 competitors on track at the same time! We have everything from authentic survivor cars, recreations, and some that are purpose built for these events like the one Joe Nemechek has. There has never been one place to hear every type of engine and exhaust combo in one place! A live example of the old superspeedway X pipe sound compared to the 1987 Monte Carlo Aerocoupe of James Hylton. I would highly recommend attending an HSR event if you are into classic NASCAR! Mike Helton was even walking around in the pits that day.

It was actually amazing to see so many of these cars running wide open in one place. I wish the races were longer! Which car was your favorite?
If you like the video leave a thumbs up to help out and make sure you’re subscribed to see the next video!
The Home Depot car , Craven's Tide Ride , CAT car , The older Motorcraft car , Rusty Wallace #2 Miller car , McDonald's Ford and the Trump car looks cool.
Well I am in the good old 412 but when you need a hand at the track and your up this way I got ya! Have 2 younger boys that can handle cleaning details as well!
Oh it don’t matter drag or nascar if I can smell racefuel count me in!!
Would like to see more the old school Trans Am cars, like the Bud Moore mustang!
The 2 Miller Lite.
I love the sound of the older stock cars, less restricted and just wanting to be unleashed, screaming top song
me too man it is totally different now
The sound these machines make is so much better than the new ones
The one bummer is you didn't get the chance to talk to Front Row Joe. My favorite driver growing up. I miss him in NASCAR so much
Joe gave me his number at PME when we were doing the Lake Speed engine. He was interested in doing a video. Then he never answered a call or text since then. So I didn’t try to talk to him that day. He had a lot going on.
@@Stapleton42sounds a bit selfish...not at all like the rest of the group...
This is the sound i miss thst late 90s early 2000s era. Had chills the whole time. Also brings me back to the first video i saw of urs of the old Lysol Lumina i was just looking for old racecar vids of them firing up and here i am i never thought id get to have this journey into time like this im hooked keep it up! Also the Mark Martin video choked me up he was My gfs late fathers favorite race car driver while mine was Jeff Gordon so we bumped heads a little 😂
I'm so happy people are restoring all these vintage NASCARs
The growth of this class in recent years is a strong indicator of growing interest
There's been a league racing them for like ten years....Supercup...now there's one down south
@@joelm6631 Grand National Super Series (the down south one) is the one I am building a car to race in. It’s almost ready.
We need to have like a Gen 4 series or something.
Sights and sounds of racing is my favorite part. Only thing missing in this video is the smell.
I agree lol.. i love the smell at 410 sprint car races, the methane or whatever they use smells so distinct i just know lol
I got goosebumps just listening to them on the backstretch. They all sound great.
Me too!
Joe's car sounds amazing!
The sound of a na 800 plus nascar is amazing.
Get the juices flowing.
You have juices?
"So you're the Team Owner"
Father: "Team Owner & Creator "!🤣🤣🤣
Love the at speed on the straightaway! Never gets old, an engine turning 9-9500!!! Nothing like it!
Couldn't agree more!
Freakin love the 2000s nascars. Can’t beat the sounds
These cars are works of art.
Thankyou to all the people who keep these pieces of history going out and doing what they were made for.
Instead of ratting them and letting them go to waste.
Looking forward to the day you run yours.
I love seeing this sort of thing.
thanks man we are glad you enjoy the same stuff we do!
John Finger is one of my heroes, he has raced everything and won in everything, brings back many memories.
Respect. Craven Tide Ride!🤘
Absolutely! Ricky Craven is the man
I'm 31. Seeing these make the younger me so happy.
I’ve been 7 years old for 20 years
same bro
This is amazing seeing all of these restored vintage stock cars racing against each other wide open at full speed and they sound absolutely amazing too! This is another super awesome video!
Thank you Mikey!!
I was a BE fan and I always thought that McD's drive thru livery was always his best livery. Especially on the old oval Taurus body. Something about that car with the black roof and deck lid that was just cool.
AH Man!! Would loved to have seen more on that BM Mustang
Us too! We didn’t get to track down the owner
Who wouldn`t enjoy hearing to these beasts up close ,much nicer sounding than TV broadcasts.
Awesome video. It was fun to watch the cars race on the track and hear the sound of that horsepower. Nice to see all these good folks talking with you about each car too. Yes I would like to see a video of Geoff Bodine's Bud Moore Ford. Thanks Stapleton42.
Thank you Mike!
@@Stapleton42You're welcome
So many awesome cars! Even trackside as spectators! They all sound amazing.
That Wrangler car shaved quite a few years off of me!!
😂 it must have done that to a lot of people
I'm very thankful that you guys went out of your trouble to do this video.Thank you
Our pleasure!
Oh man what a event! From the cup cars to the Le Mans Mazda rotary car is just phenomenal!
The flyby from the cup cars gave me goosebumps!
The ARRRREEEEEYYYYUghgh sound of some of those older cars that are rung out higher and that have the higher pitch are just so dang good
I enjoy all of your content Stapleton, but this right here is gonna be my absolute favorite. It’s time to hear what a real NASCAR sounds like. Thanks as always
Thanks man! They do sound so much better than the current cars 😂
How freeking cool was that event! Thanks for sharing again! I would love to see the late 60's early 70's cars too.
The last time I was at Road Atlanta the pit lane was on the other side and there was no chicane. I spent many weekends there, worked there as a tech inspector and worked for the racing fuel provider for several years. It will always be some of my fondest memories.
Vintage stockers and the people who carry them on deserve as much coverage as you can give them . Thanks for the video !!!
Oh man - I was getting goosebumps too listening to them coming down the straightaway! Nothing is ever gonna sound better to me that a vintage stock car at full song on the track.....and out of all of them Front Row Joe's care sounded the best! Great video y'all - keep em coming - I'm completely hooked on them!👍
What a super video like always. I am 57 and I still do all hard labor for sure somebody has to do in this crazy world we live in. I live in Colorado wish I could make it there to change some tires and help some cool people out. 🏁Brian Wow youtube unsubscribed me here no worries I resubscribed Mitchell and Logan.
Glad you’re back!!
Went to The Glen many times in my youth to watch the NASCAR races. Your footage of the cars brought back memories of seeing the cars scream down the backstretch before the inner loop was added. I was there the day JD left this earth.
"Shit" I thought I was watching the extended members version!
Thanks, really enjoyed the video.
God Bless.
Thanks mark!
All of it was awesome .the Tide car was sweet . And Dale's wrangler car . Thanks for all the videos .
Outstanding, love vintage racing. You captured the sound better than FOX and NBC... Sounded like I was there. The speed sensation, too...they are flying in those cars. Great job capturing the personalities.
Thank you Gary!
Really awesome video man. I was one of the Lanier Tech students handing out the trophies.
That's awesome!
That was a awesome trip. Great job as always with the video.
Thanks again!
I love that track and was there for every event from 1979 to 1990!
This really pulled me in a nascar fan of the older generation, its like nothing else. These cars all have a soul i dont care what anyone says.
I agree they do
Another great video! John Finger was the Mazda dealer here in Greenville, SC, for many years. He raced in several classes in the SCCA and was known as "King of the Hill" for his many victories at the Chimney Rock Hill Climb. I'm sure he has many stories he can tell along with some very interesting vehicles in his garage. My favorite racer in this video is the former Bud Moore Mustang. I also like the Camaros, Challengers, Javelins from the historic Trans-Am days. They were built to run left & right while NASCAR racers not so much. Thanks for what you and Logan do for us fans.
Thank you Dennis!
I love seeing vintage stock cars and I love Joe kickin everyones ass in his stuff but best part of this video was the random Mazda rotary appearance
Dang I wish I’d known this was going on! I used to work at Road Atlanta and I’m only about 40 minutes from track. I hope the memorial to my friend Hazel (RIP) is still there in Turn 7.
I'm happy to see your subscribers moving up, you certainly deserve it
When is your car gonna be ready?
Denny from Minnesota
In the next month! Should be ready to fire up in a week.
Epic Stream!!! Love seeing that Ward Burton 22!🫡🇺🇸🏁
Sound is so good. Makes me want to move to the south and get myself one!
I love the trucks. They’re always my favorite.
Keep up the amazing work on these videos. Keep the history coming
Wow. I was there the same day and noticed that I stood in the same place and looked at some of the same cars! I wish I would have seen you guys and got to meet yall and tell ya how much I enjoy and appreciate what yall do! I hope yall had enough fun to come back next year and maybe I'll see ya and get to meet ya! Thanks again for the awsome show!
thank you Mike!!
You brought up the fact that you like to see the difference in all the different techniques and ways of doing things. As of lifelong NASCAR fan(45). That is the part, I miss so much, the sheet metal, analog way, and the artistry of building each of these race cars.
I agree it meant something to have different teams do things their own way.
The Mitty is so much fun to experience. The vintage stock car class is awesome.
Holy crap! I didn't know events like this existed, I NEED to go to one. I wanna hear those oldschool NASCAR sounds again!
This is better than NASCAR today!!!
wow super cool great job wish I had one of those cars
Me too! Lol
I miss the sights and sounds of this era of stock car. Seeing and hearing them at Road Atlanta is epic. Thank you for capturing the magic.
Brilliant work, I so enjoy hearing the cars at the low revs when heading out on track, this was what I loved when the Thunderdome was running here in Melbourne.
No better sounds or smells than at a NASCAR event! Nothing like it!
Thank you Logan and Mitchell, it's appreciated.
Thank you for being here!
Watching the cars go around the track made me miss working in the industry from those time periods. The sights, sounds and smells always made me have an adrenaline rush like nothing else. Thank you for once again taking me back in time and making me “younger” and also remember why I loved and worked in the sport for 15 years.
Thanks man I am glad to hear that
These events are great. We used to have it at Coronado speed festival on a military base it lasted to 2016. Best time ever.
I'm in the building to see this too! Appreciate you guys!
Thanks mark!
My man this is awesome you do such an awesome job keeping this legacy alive of vintage NASCAR thank you so much!!
Thank you sir!
It would be nice to remember and
see two forgotten NASCAR road races that took place out west. In the early days of the 1950s, then called the Grand National series (today's Cup), came out (mostly road driven) and raced the high speed Willow Springs road course in the Califormia desert. Most interesting would be a late 80's/early '90s Winston West (today's "sickly" ARCA West) races thru the streets of Spokane, Washington. The 3.5 mile course included passing thru a tunnel & crossing two bridges. The car rules were same as the then Winston Cup cars, full size "big brutes" powered by big block engines whose drivers often beat NASCAR's best when they came west. The stands were packed. The races there were held for five years!
The Bud Moore mustang was my overall favorite.
Still watching the video. Great one. The high school junior with the vision. Also, you stating your goal of increasing the vintage aspect of modern racing. "Know where you're going to be when you get where you're going". Jerry Clower quote.
How can you not love that Tide Ride. Cool event!
That Bill Davis 22 and that low aggressive Dodge grill take me back to my childhood🔥
I live in Washington (state) and wish I lived near the Atlanta area because I would love to participate as a volunteer for these people. I've had the pleasure of driving in the original Richard Petty Driving Experience and the Rusty Wallace, as well as hired to assist student drivers get suited and "fitted" into the older version of the Rusty Wallace experience here in Spokane Washington. Now that I am retired I would truly love to be a part of the Vintage Series. I want to know what that smell is!! Your video was once again so well put together and love the content the two of you provide. Kinda wish I was like that young highschool guy networking to become a tire changer!! Goose bumps were felt ~ indeed. Thank You
Thank you Rodney!!
I live in Spokane and unfortunately that racing experience is no longer because Spokane raceway closed down. The drag strip is still running and roadcourse but they let the track grow weeds because it needs rebuilt same with the concrete grand stands need rebuilt. I doubt they will but there’s still Stateline speedway only about 40 minutes away if you ever wanna go watch short track racing local
Loving seeing the old paint schemes on-track.
That sound 👌 awesome hope ya good, looks like a lot of fun! 😄
O, the sounds, thank you guys! Mitchell and Logan…..
Thank you!
Great video my favorite era of stock cars thanks for sharing
I love these Historic Stock Car events!
It's like traveling back in time seeing these amazing Gen 4 cars and liveries and other cars! It honestly feels like NASCAR than actual NASCAR
Holy Crap! When Joe was coming down the front stretch that first time through! She sounded good! Wish i had something like this near to where i live. Love your videos Mitchell. Keep up the great work!
Thanks man!!
You should have talked Lake Speed in to bringing his car. I would be nice to see him at Road Atlanta.
I thought the same thing!
Maybe he will once it’s ironed out! I think he’s afraid of looking bad or unprepared.
@@Stapleton42 I can understand that. He is such a good racer and even better Man.
That was great! I'm so glad you guys are doing these events and the sounds were epic!!! Cheers!
Absolutely love this. Taking me back to watching races when I was growing up. Really enjoyed this!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great stuff man. I live about 15 minutes from Road Atlanta and went up there that Sunday to check out the cars and see some sprint races. There's another HSR event in September and the IMSA Petit Le Mans in October is always a great show as well. I've got some Mitty footage myself that I'm going to post whenever I get around to editing it lol. Been subscribed for awhile and love all the content you put out.
I really appreciate both of yalls effort to bring the best vintage Nascar content to youtube. The sound of The engines is so awesome Joe Nemechek Trump car sounded so badass ripping the straight away! Can't wait for you next video. Thanks again for all that yall do for real Nascar History!
Thanks man!
You were not kidding. I saw the goose bumps on your arm when you said you had them. I guess that proves you only tell the truth. Thanks so much. That was very exciting.
Glad you see that Larry!
And once again you two brought us amazing content. I love it. Thank you
Our pleasure! Glad you’re here for it
These cars sound fantastic.. I’m in the UK so NASCAR isn’t very popular, but I love it as a car mechanic I love old school race mechanics.. really enjoyed the video.. you are both becoming well known in NASCAR circles.
Thank you Andy!
I would love to be able to experience this sort of thing one day. Hell even just spectating looks like it would be a great time.
That's pretty badass that you got to see a 787B on track.
MORE MORE content like this. People need to know that old races cars can still be driven and enjoyed by not just the racers but the fans as well. The excitement is VERY VISIBLE of every driver/owner there. No one really cares about who wins or who loses-it is about having FUN.
If we could get some original 90's and 2000's drivers behind the wheel on a short track with old gen 4s imagine how many fans would pack the stands!
@@polycube868 Sounds like Grand National Super Series. Jeremy Mayfield is full time and Frank Kimmel runs it occasionally. I will be racing there very soon
@@Stapleton42 are they racing in their old cars with the original paint schemes?
Man, I don’t live that far from Road Atlanta…can’t believe I missed this. Dang, dang, dang it!!!😡. Thanks for the video!👍
Enjoyed the video, thanks for sharing !!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Mannn those welds at 15:20 🤣🤣 that came out of somebody’s garage after 10 Busch lights
The '66-'72 Trans Am cars are always the highlight of any vintage festival. 😊
That's awesome to see those old nascars on the track and that would be lots of fun to try and thanks for sharing
The car gods had a hand in the making of this video!!! It should have an ASMR tag for the people with gas in the veins
You did a really great job interviewing these guys and shooting the cars - this was an awesome video I had no idea there was vintage nascar racing.
Thanks man!
@@Stapleton42 no problem I have really been enjoying your other content. Do you race these vintage nascars? This intrigues the hell out of me lol
I have been really busy the past few weeks, but I am glad you got this out. I was hanging out with Jim Barfield and their crew. Jim was spotting for the 16 Ford Mustang with the old Greg Biffle look. He finished in second place in his class. That was the first time he had ever driven a race in Vintage Racing except for practice and qualifying. He made several good passes to get there. I was not there Sunday, but Jim told me, he had a good run. I hope to see you there in the fall race. I was hoping Lake Speed would be there.
As always another great piece of work you did there!!!
Thanks Doug maybe lake will show up one day!
Have to love seeing Logan dive in and geek out looking at engines
Love this so much! So much of what made NASCAR, NASCAR all in one spot!
A friend bought a Brad Keselowski car from Brads dad. He runs it at the Texas Mile, the guys in his late 70’s and is into it heavy. Pretty cool to have a ex heavy hitter close by.
We have lots of parts and a workbench from Bob Keselowski's shop!
Love seeing the stock car class gaining steam. I remember going to the Mitty and for years we'd be lucky to get double digit stock cars.
This is so freaking cool! I would have rode down if I knew about it but I'd never heard about this before.
Great video I love it keep them coming. And just wondering have you thought about doing a video on the Canadian NASCAR series it would be awesome to see
25:00 NICE Studebaker Avanti, about as rare and costly as those beautiful old stock cars and trucks. I saw one of these vintage road races in Daytona January 2001 with my dad. Along with the incredible old stock cars, there were many classic cars restored cars that were also street legal going around the road course and going at about 160 in turns three and four. This is a really cool series, I wanna see if maybe Sebring may have this 'cause I don't think Daytona has since then.
Sure do appreciate the people running them.
Didn’t even knew this side of racing existed. Super cool. Few clutches getting burned up. Good for clutch manufacturing lol
