    I didn't use their radiant barrier but I did install barrier prior to renovations and even after REDUCING my air conditioner by 20% to increase dehumidification time, the radiant barrier reduced my thermal load significantly! now I do have to install a dedicated dehumidifier since I am in the south, But the Radiant barrier is awesome! Between the radiant barrier, and smaller AC, Iv reduced my electric usage in the summer by about 25%! My system was tracked with a Flir Thermal camera and data logging thermostat.

    Can i cover the top of my roof with foiled stone wool? Our roof is covered in shingles and they never put any insulation on it

    • @AtticFoil
      @AtticFoil  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In a ventilated roof, putting the insulation on the roof is the wrong place. This is kind of like holding a jacket OVER your head-Why?? You "thermal boundry" or the box that you keep hot/cold is usually the FLOOR of the attic and this is where more insulation would go. For the roof, all you really need is to stop/slow the RADIANT HEAT and this is what product like www.RoofingFoil.com does. To slow down CONDUCTIVE heat you need "regular" insulation on the floor of your attic. So, radiant barrier is your 1st line of defense against radiant heat and regular insulation is your 2nd line of defense against conductive heat.

    What about hurricane-prone areas? Especially close to the Gulf Coast? I would like to use metal roofing but the use of battens will not hold down the roofing well in a high wind event. Also, I plan to use spray foam in the attic, so installing the barrier under the roof deck is not gonna work either. Is there any kind of solution for that? The roof sheathing will be glued and screwed (or ring shank nailed) for uplift resistance. The only solution I can think of is 2 layers of sheathing separated by an air gap. Or just skip the radiant barrier altogether.

    Is there a solution for those using shingles. I need to change my roof. My attic get so hot in our 110 degree Louisiana temperature. I heard Radiant barrier foil can be used under the shingles. But from what I heard on the video, there should be space between the foil and the shingles for this to work. What is your opinion and is there a solution to reduce the heat in the attic.

What insulation can I put down before the shingles go down because the den is so hot you can't even use it in the summer and it's so cold in the winter it's freezing in there and all the walls are insulated in there. I also have put in heat and air. What is the best insulation to put down on a flat top roof what is an open beam ceiling without destroying the ceiling?

    Do u have to use the felt paper with the radiant barrier or can u just use the radiant barrier over the sheathing and on wood planks can u use 1x4 or u have to use the 2x2

    • @AtticFoil

      You can go with or without felt paper. The felt paper provides an extra waterproofing layer and can help reduce some condensation by keeping the deck a little warmer.

      Steve, great question! Just because something is "Shiny" does not mean it reflects heat. Think of chrome bumper. Would not want to sit on it on a hot, sunny day. It sounds like you are doing things right. I have and love a foam encapsulate attic. But you still need a radiant barrier. Definitely do it right from the beginning and install battens and www.RoofingFoil.com any question call the office. This area is really my passion. We call it "high performance construction". Can a radiant barrier be implemented when you use steel shingles? Also, if you have that radiant barrier, how does the roofing hold up when you walk on the roof such as for cleaning gutters, painting, scooping tons of snow off your roof? And how does the roof hold up to hail or snow since it has no solid backing? Might it be more prone to damage from the elements?

    • @AtticFoil
      @AtticFoil  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Steel shingles work great with a radiant barrier since they have the airspace behind them. As far as durability, every product is different, but in general they are designed to handle foot traffic. It wouldn't work if they got dented, or damaged overtime someone got on the roof. Same with Ice/snow. It would take a LOT of ice or snow to have enough weight to affect the roof. I'd think the structure would fail before the roof.

    • @AtticFoil
      @AtticFoil  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The BEST option is to get it under a metal roof if you have that option. It's better to get the radiant barrier as far to the "outside" as possible. If you don't have this option, then a regular attic installation method with www.AtticFoil.com is the way to go.

    I was telling my dad about this. I'm getting ready to replace my asphalt shingles with metal roofing and he's helping me out. He has over 50 years as carpenter/roofer and I've never roofed so I'm getting advice from him. He told me there shouldn't be anything over the insulation in the attic and that this might cause the metal to fail early if it's heating the metal up by reflecting the heat back into it.
    I didn't know how to answer him. Can you help? I'm starting to rip the old shingles off in about 2 weeks.

    • @AtticFoil
      @AtticFoil  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thanks for your question. This is common belief that the heat reflected will cause damage to the roof. However, the facts are that the roof OVER a radiant barrier usually increase less than 10 degrees. This is considered nominal and will not damage the roof. • @AtticFoil
      @AtticFoil  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Condensation is fact of nature. When the temperature of an item drops below the dew point, you get condensation. Even tree bark will get wet from dew under the right conditions. So, yes potentially there could be some condensation between the roof and the foil. Normally, it will dry or bake out after the surface temps are above the dew point. This is one reason for having an underlayment. It keeps the wood from getting wet due to condensation not just liquid water getting past the roofing layer.

    What impact will a foil based radiant barrier on a roof have on things like cell phone signals, radio and tv antenna reception, and for that matter will a metal roof not also have a similar effect?

    • @AtticFoil
      @AtticFoil  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It really depends. I can have an effect. I really depends on how strong the signal is now. If you have a weak signal, It can push it over the edge. If the signal is really strong, then you probably won't have an issue. It would normally not have an effect on external antennas or dishes since they are above the foil. Cell signals can be questionable. However, a MicroCell is the way to fix this. www.atticfoil.com/index.php/knowledge-zone/knowledge-zone-learn-about-radiant-barrier/myth-or-truth-cell-phones-and-radiant-barrier/

    Could you explain me why shouldn't i place the foil directly on the roof?I think the sun light is also the radiant heat,so the foil can reflect most of it .I ask you because my building is already build-up,it's a flat concrete roof, and i want to do it the cheapest way, so i think i just bond the foil to the roof like aluminum coating.
    Thank you.

    • @AtticFoil
      @AtticFoil  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You CAN put directly on top of the roof. We have many customers who have used AtticFoil for outdoor applications with great success. Depending on the conditions I'd expect 3-7 years of benefit. If possible it would be better to lift the foil off the roof rather than bonding. You could use what's called "sleepers" to lay the foil across. 2x4"s or something similar. Then, depending on the wind, you will want to weigh down, or mechanically attach the foil to the sleepers or roof. I would also drill a few 1/2" holes through the roll before installing to provide plenty of holes for rain to drain through. There are many ways to do this. Basically, you will need to "rig" it. Here is a link showing Radiant Barrier Outdoor Applications: www.atticfoil.com/index.php/applications/exterioroutdoor-use/

      If you glue the foil to the bottom of the metal and the foil facing away from the metal still faces an airspace then it will work. You must have an airspace on ONE side of the foil for it to either work off of the reflectivity or emissivity quality. You cannot "sandwich" the foil between two other products. so if you have a shingle roof, can you place the radiant barrier over the shingle or do the shingles need to be removed?

    • @AtticFoil
      @AtticFoil  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually you can go directly over a shingle roof without a tear off. Assuming the existing roof is structurally sound. atticfoil.com/index.php/applications/under-metal-tile-roofs/

    I am not putting metal roof on house ,I am putting it on a carport .Which would be best .It is an A frame 24 x30 carport all wood with shingles that keep blowing off on 1 side .The guy wants to put down 1x4's over the existing roof and then attach the metal to that .This is an open carport

      Putting foil below the 1x4's will reduce radiant heat from going through the carport.

      Kelly Crane you can still fix your problem from inside the attic space by installing a radiant barrier directly to your roof joists ,the most common type looks like bubble wrap but silver and you staple it directly to the roof joists ,the best from the roof travels up the barrier and out the ridge cap on the house ,I installed an internal radiant barrier inside my attic and it lowered temps from 147 degrees to 95 degrees .

    can you use Reynolds wrap? also when installed should I put the shiny side up?

    • @AtticFoil
      @AtticFoil  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could...in theory. However, AtticFoil is tearproof. Typical kitchen foil tears easy and would be very difficult to install. Plus, when you look at the Per Sq. Ft cost, I think AtticFoil may actually be cheaper.

    How does foil reflect in the dark.

    • @AtticFoil
      @AtticFoil  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Radiant barrier reflects HEAT, not necessarily the light. Infrared Radiation is the INVISIBLE part of the light spectrum.

    Can i use both on my tile roof : radiant barrier plywood + radiant barrier on top of underlayment. If just one is enough then which one to choose?

    • @AtticFoil
      @AtticFoil  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can definitely use both no problem. If you have to choose one, then the www.RoofingFoil.com is the way to go. It will help keep the roof deck from ever getting as hot. With radiant heat, the further to the outside for the radiant barrier, the better. It's kinda like choosing to put a solar screen in the window of your car or parking under a tree. The tree would keep the inside of the car cooler.

    I'm from tropical Sri Lanka. My question is whether there should be any ventilation in that air gap. Thank you.

    • @AtticFoil
      @AtticFoil  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Normally you want to combine radiant barrier with a ventilated airspace if possible.

      Hi Janitha,
      I am a builder, and just recently returned from a project there in Sri Lanka.
      Two things I would add to the ventilation of a roof in Sri Lanka.
      1) use a continuous screen at the bottom of your battens under your roofing, whether it is metal, tiles or asbestos concrete sheets. this will allow for any water to get out and for air to flow up, and to keep any crawly things out, and help keep the driving rain out.
      2) Run a continuous ridge vent open and screened across the top of the roof, again with a screen for the same reasons.
      3) I would also tape the joints in the foil to help with the water proofing.
      Good luck.
      Patrick

    Dose this help with RF/ WiFi radiation?

    • @AtticFoil
      @AtticFoil  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This can be a little tricky. Generally, installing radiant barrier does not effect your cell signal unless the signal is really weak to begin with. However, although we don't promote the product as RF/Faraday Cage type product, we have had many customer buy a lot of product for this purpose. (whole buildings on interior walls, etc.) Because needs are specific, we recommend getting a sample or single roll and testing to see if it meets your requirements. Generally speaking, any pure aluminum product would reduce or eliminate RF signals.

    • @mikewhite9818
      @mikewhite9818 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alex N Yes aluminum foil will block radio frequencies. As long as there are no gaps. In your house rf will enter through windows and walls unless there is aluminum foil there as well.

    I used to install this in South Florida. we would cook in the summer in the attic. big difference once we finished the job. one attic went from 140 to 97 degrees on a 90 degree summer day. so I put it in our shed and our lawn equipment is in a much cooler environment.
