Everyone talking about how crazy it is that Ann agreed to date Tom has completely forgotten that Ann used to be with Andy at the start of the show! Andy is an angel but that matchup was bad too. Ann had a problem all along dating the wrong guys.

As bad as this relationship is, I like the way that it’s pretty clear right from the beginning that it’s a bad relationship. Unlike other shows that throw together the worst couple possible and try to pretend that maybe they’ll work out when no viewer believes or even wants that
I mean, it was clear the writers were running out of ideas for Ann at this point.
I’m glad someone said this this was funny because it was terrible. And also it was really realistic because we all have those people that we’ve dated that is just failure from the start for whatever reason we were inspired in our lives where we thought failure seems great. And I love that they put that in there because it’s real. Tom is ridiculous and Ann is hilarious because she knows it and they keep persisting anyway. I also disagree with all this Tom is a terrible character that they try to get you to love blah blah blah. Tom is a less than attractive man who is actually a nice person despite his ridiculous character flaws who want someone to love him. That’s most of everyone. We don’t all look like Chris Traeger. When he gets with someone he really likes in a relationship is secure he’s completely different. I mean just look at who we end up with Lucy is a normal stable person and he’s a good boyfriend to her. And was never going to be anything but ridiculousness because they both know that they don’t match. It’s more than the fact that she might be out of his league she’s also nothing like what he’s looking for think about his no-no list it might seem trivial but that’s his list

Counterpoint. April literally saw no good matches and knew "Tom and Ann will not stick but they'll have a fun Valentine's Day together". And it worked too well because they dated for a bit.
The show kept trying to paint Tom as misunderstood and sweet on the inside but he kept being such a selfish manchild. This whole arc was a miss for me, despite the laughs.

Aziz is a funny guy but I hate his character in this show. He's the only character in this entire show I actually hate. I even like the antagonists like Bobby Newport, Jeremy Jamm, and Joan Callamezzo

So much hate on my boy Tommy in the comments. He’s a sad man who uses items to give him happiness. Everyone talks about how he’s insufferable and a man child but that’s just someone who thinks everyone will hate the real him so he uses pop culture/ famous people to create a layer of defense. That’s why when Ann listed off her no nos for him, he saw nothing wrong with them and even felt some pride. He can consider anyone who hates on him as simply uncultured and let it brush off his back. If you see the later episode where Jerry retires and Tom becomes the new Jerry, he talks to Ron about his inability to make friends growing up because he was the skinny Indian kid in an all white small town. So he tries to recreate himself using everyone’s idols as his mold. Sure he falls short but regardless he is still a good guy trying his best. Can’t hate
Love when April tells Tom that she does care about things and lists her few favorite things
People forget the scene where the Venezuelans come to town and pay Tom to be their butler/ concierge which was demeaning work, but he did it for the money, then he takes all of his earnings and anonymously/secretly donates it to the fund Leslie started to turn the pit into a park. He's a good person.

I just pretend this never happened. It's like a poorly-thought out fan fiction. There are some laughs in this arc, but it's not in my personal canon 🤷🏻♂️
Still never really understood why Ann dated Tom in the first place. What was she hoping to get out of it? The whole time she even talked about how much he annoyed her and she barely let him near her. She knew from day one that it was never going anywhere so it was like she was just punishing herself or something. Never understood why the writers put them together.
I think the intent was trying to find something deeper in Tom's character and wrap up Ann's love life plot. Problem is Tom couldn't express the depth of his character with someone as codependent as Ann. What they ended up getting was Tom looking worse than ever and Ann expressing depth to her character that they ended up exploring further in her self discovery arc, as Tom finally started his entrepreneurial career.
Just bad writing really. Realistically Anne would have never bothered with Tom. Kind of just seems like the writers were brainstorming and said "Hey they haven't been together yet. Lets see how this goes"
It makes A LOT more sense than her dating Andy for THREE YEARS

Ann had a big issue with dating then breaking things off with guys at this point. The Tom and Ann dynamic seemed very off but that's because it was supposed to be a non-functional relationship that constantly gets started up again. They work closely together so even when they break up they'll quickly get back together due to their close proximity.

This dynamic kind of makes me think of Toby at "The Office". Everyone likes Toby but the Regional Manager. Always Michael but even Jim (during co-manager phase).

I have to disagree. The main reason I know it’s an act is because Tom’s biggest fear is becoming the “new Jerry”. He even confirms to Ron that he used to be the “Jerry” wherever he used to live/work. His act is mostly based on what people in the early 2000s considered cool 😂

Tom is pretty awful, but Ann is nothing. the weirdest swing and miss of a character i can think if. I think the most unbelievable story arc is leslie hyping her up as the most amazing bff ever for the entire series. Although i do often quote the absurd compliments she gave her.
If ann and tom happened only so we got "babY im sorrY for how I AAACTED, well, it was worth it.
