Building a Coaling Tower for a Model Railroad Part 1

- In this episode, I begin work on a coaling tower kit made by Walthers for my model railroad layout. I start with the dump shed on the back and get some practice on the weathering techniques I'll use including working with oil paints for the first time. I try a few other new techniques along the way.

Great video. I have one of these coaling towers that I'm going to try to paint. Not sure how it will go since it's already assembled without any painting having been done. The owner was a neighbor and friend and WW II vet, who sadly passed at age 91. His layout filled his entire basement, and he loved giving me tours and advice. I'll miss him, but I have a lot of pieces of his layout to remember him by.
Painting after assembly can be tough and it can be difficult to know a head of time what to assemble before painting and what to wait on. I'm sorry for your loss. One of the men that inspired me in model railroading passed about 3 years ago and I treasure the items his widow gave me. I made sure to name one of the businesses on my layout after him.

Great video, thanks for all the detail on the techniques you're using. Structure building is something I don't have a great deal of experience with, so really learning a lot from your videos. Need to get working on some structures, until I can get started on the real layout.

I guess I got spoiled by building car models. Most of them come with detailed instructions with lots of great diagrams. Feel like a lot of the structure kits try to get away with as few steps and instructions as possible.

Hi Drew, I was just wondering why you finally choose the Atlas lumber building to customized and not Walthers Walton and Son's kit instead. I'm not criticizing or questioning your choice here. Hope you understand that I respect you a lot and the great job you're doing. It's just... curiosity here !
I'm building this based on a project in a book I found and they used the Atlas kits. I figured for my first kitbash projects some instructions might help me get it kickstarted. However, I do prefer the quality of Walthers over Atlas.
@@WhiteRiverLine Hey Drew, thanks for answering. I did the Walton and sons kit once. It wasn't nicely weathered like you do but I really liked it at the time. It was one of many Walthers kits I did in my modeler's life. And it was one of the fewest I really had pleasure to do. At least, everything was fitting nicely. The part I like the most when you are building a kit is how you handle detailing and weathering while you're doing it.
