    Someone's probably already said that no it's not the Hands and Feet mix (that's Enjoy the Silence). You mean Holier than Thou. Which is EPIC.
    Also I think it was the biggest selling 12".

    I listened to a lot of Depeche Mode when I was younger because my father kept playing their albums over and over in the car when going anywhere and everywhere here in America. I think I was in 4th or 5th grade-ish back in 2012? Ultra was what I remember hearing most but Violator and SOFAD was also in the mix. Anyways- I'm 18 now and just graduated now and upon recently this year listening to their albums in their entirety- have hugely inspired me to be a better musician and songwriter as a whole. The arrangements and songwriting are just something to admire and love I swear. On top of that- I'm wanting to start some sort of electronic/rock type band in the future with a hope of making nice music and this channel really opened my eyes on the brilliance of this band and what they did- which inspires greatly. Their really geniuses and so are you for showing us this. Really appreciate it dude. Keep going. 👍

    Thank you for another violator review. Personal Jesus is one of my favourite songs, because I really love those melody parts that's are so great in Depeche Mode works - like Personal Jesus, Never let me Down Again, But not Tonight, Question of Time, Fly on the Windscreen and others

    10:55 - I don't understand that at all. I found Depeche Mode in the 11th grade with _Music for the Masses_ and _101._ I reached back to _Speak and Spell_ and loved virtually everything they had done. Then _Violator_ came out and I was blown away even more. I don't see how a "die hard" Depeche Mode fan can be upset over guitar. It was just another distinctive sound in their vibe of coolness.

    If "Waiting For The Night" is the quiet and kind puppy, "Personal Jesus" is the aggresive bad dog in the album. They are both integral to the album.

    I am really excited for you to get to Exciter eventually in this series. I feel like Exciter is the most under appreciated DM album out there. Beautiful music and sound I feel you can just drift away and get lost in that album. I am sure I am in the minority there as most seem to throw it to the way side and don't seem to care for it at all.

    I love your videos Vaughn! I've heard Personal Jesus for first time at a disco dance when I was a teen and I've haunted by that hipnotic sound and I've completely fascinated and fell in love with this song! So every time I hear it I rermember that moment. Just me and that wonderful song and is like a time travel !

    Cannot wait for Halo. The best track from Violator which wasn’t a single.

  • @Morse___
    @Morse___ 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Sonically, Personal Jesus is set apart from the rest of Violator. It’s the “in yer face” track on the album, whereas everything else is sonically darker, deeper and subtler. Even Or at least that’s why I think you skip it (like me,, sometimes) 😉

    • @coertwelman5840
      @coertwelman5840 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree with this. It is the one song that doesn't work that well with the rest. The Stargate mix of this song fits quite a bit better though.

    The first cassette I bought was A Broken frame, although I already liked their previous album, later I also bought Speak and spell and all their later albums. Violator was the culmination of everything they learned, even so they continue to make very good songs they have not reached such perfection. I was born in 1966 so if there is a band that I have always followed, it is Depeche Mode.

    Even as I was waiting to watch this, I was thinking about this song and how I do skip over it, whether it be on the album or on playlists. It's not even in my top 25(yes, I made a list), but I always include it on DM playlists because it is such a quintessential DM song, at least to the majority of people. Maybe I (we) skip it because of that, and because it is overplayed...?
    That being said, when I go back to that time when it was released, being maybe 14 years old, hearing it for the first time, playing it over and over again... what a time and what a track. I would miss it at concerts, I love the energy it brings, watching all the hands reaching into the air.
    Thanks for another excellent analysis! I've been missing these!

    Great content again, weirdly enough I've never noticed the preacher and made the connection. I've watched that very sermon many times, powerful stuff. He's talking about when they analysed the blood of Christ in isreal, it came back with a chromosome count that was too low. It showed one parent, he said 'it was the blood of Jesus Christ himself.' I'm not particularly religious but it's very compelling, life is to learn. I don't tend to skip it by the way, but it is very overplayed. I can even imagine it being on homes under the hammer if there's a church featured 😂😂

    Sometimes, only sometimes, Spirit reminds me of Violator...only sometimes. Apropos Personal Jesus, you are right, now when I think about it, that's probably one song I could live without when band is on tour. My God, I miss them so much that I would forgive them if they play PJ 5 times in a concert 😪

    A completely massive high point episode for me. I, like you have given Depeche a break for about 3 months. The upshot of this is the never ending rediscovery of them, which I love. Yes, get the skipping of Personal Jesus. I did this too, maybe because back in 89/90 it was played everywhere and became boring in a loving way. The breakdown with sounds, I thank you for as I love any original sounds to be honest. You’re doing the group very proud. Loving it all again

  • @SviatoslavKaverin
    @SviatoslavKaverin 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    23:53 etc -- You always skip the high octave in the guitar part, but that is an important element which makes the riff not really boring (but with just 2 notes it is). Consider those legatos with a bit of pitch bend of A (just a badass point preceding the pull-off at the same string). Not a must to do the same on keyboard, of course.
    So the sequence is:
    F# A_F# F#^ A_F#
    The same sequence on B, and on A and G# those may be 5th and/or 8th added to the root and played in any way.
    In the childhood i had only been playing it the same 2-note boring way until i saw the right method at the Dave's solo concert in 2003 (from far away!).
    Sometimes Martin played that from E -- thus in E minor, with open strings (instead the 2nd position on fretboard). First of all, in the brilliant acoustic version of PJ which was a huge mystery to me. Probably Johnny Cash was doing the same. I haven't checked the pitch in all versions and covers.

      @tobiaskamp5320 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You‘re absolutely right.

    Okay I know that Im like 3 years late to this video, but I really love these videos of reviewing DM albums. I do however feel like you missed something in the verses here.
    At the end of every verse the bass goes B - C# as you showed during your chordal play, but the bass doesn't stop on the C#, but actually goes to a D right at the end. I also feel like where you played a C#m, there should have been a C#7 or a C#7sus4.
    All in all, when I listen to the verses of Personal Jesus I feel the chords as: F#m A E Bm C#7 D F#m
    Thanks for making these videos! I always find out interresting stuff!

    Being only 9 on 'Personal Jesus's release and 10 when the 'Violator' album was released,
    the first I knew about the 'Personal Jesus' song at all was when I borrowed my big brother's second copy of the album - in 1998!?!
    (The first was stolen from his car, along with some other cassettes in 1991).
    I'd previously taped the other three singles from the CD in 1992, when I instinctively realised Depeche Mode were... good, to say the least, but lacked the confidence to scratch the surface more as a young music listener full-stop. So when I did hear 'Personal Jesus' in 1998, there was no 'synth-purist' prejudices in me to hold back my enjoyment of the album. It means if I think there's something very wrong with any album by any artist - when or after faithful listens (no distractions, right time, right place), I simply listen to that given album less often. Instead of skipping tracks, I have an image of 'Clean' being followed by the six original 'Violator' b-sides on a CD re-release, starting with 'Memphisto'. I may have small issues with 'Macro' (track #6 on 'Playing The Angel'), which COULD have been replaced by the 'Newborn' b-side; but I'm no Gary Numan or Ralf Hutter - Depeche Mode have been world-class servants of broadcasting warnings from the future, in the form of amazing electronic compositions for a long time and from their point of view, not many could've ever done better, had/if the world started all over and repeated itself 1000 times... (But please may I add, it's still a great topic to discuss.)
    Having read through all 100+ comments since early-August, I see not many discussions further with the 'Personal Jesus' video.
    Whilst I see nothing wrong with the video as a single track promotional tool, I would love to also watch a video of the album audio version; from the point where traditional electronics kick in, a video that experiments with infra-red and ultra-violet imagery effects - in particular the part that preceeds those thumping stomps and the vocals "Reach out and touch faith, FAITH FAITH FAITH FAITH [echoed]". It's a very contemporary moment in music that the single, understandably for music TV promotion: misses. The 'Strange Too', 6-video release also missed this opportunity, though maybe someone could one day put this right (fingers-crossed!).
    Your point about the general 'Violator' team production not being realised to more explored potential is very important. I wish more artists, producers and musical craftsmen/women would accept responsibility for if/when they create music somewhere near this level of art - in many different and possible ways.
    Best of luck with the future 'Violator' series reviews.

  • @Kaitlin267
    @Kaitlin267 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The women in the video are so awesome. They seem to totally get the spirit of the album and you can see they have a sense of humor and an understanding of the US/Spaghetti Western sensibility. They look great on film. The photography is beautiful. It's a great video. It is NOT Black Celebration, which I also love, and even crazily more during COVID.
    I love Personal Jesus mostly because I can sing SO WELL along with it. :) It also enraged my parents at the time. I am not sure I understand the meaning behind it...I should look more into that.

    Just checked my original 12" versions of both PJ and ETS. The longer version of PJ was called the "Holier Than Thou Approach". "Hands and Feet mix" was ETS - sorry, I was in pedant mode ;)
    My favourite version of this song is the "Pump Mix", which has all the evangelist samples (and tons more synths) on it. It's fantastic. I skip it occasionally, but only to get to "Halo" :)
    Boy have I missed these reviews. BTW, does the on topic chicken get a royalty based on number of appearances? He was most prolific in this video :)

    As an hardcore DM fan since 84, I received a shock when I first heard "Personal Jesus" in 89. I felt like betrayed and was furious against the music industry that "mutated" 😉 my venerated electro band into raw repeated blues and simple melodic without nuance. Fortunatly, the complete Album is outstanding. So yes, Vaughn, as you said, I am push to skip PJ but I enjoy it at live show. Thx you Vaughn for the pleasure you gave with your very interesting vidéo which mix engineering and art. Fab👍

    Back to these series, I realise that I never reacted until now regarding PJ. But I understand what you mean: viscerally, when you first listened to the album, I think you had an allergic reaction to it because it didn't fit at all with what you "liked" (loved) at the time and expected from DM: good, pure electronica and not "Americanised pseudo-country".
    I think I had the opposite reaction: PJ immediately grabbed me because it was precisely what I did NOT expect from DM and I thought it was pretty "ballsy" that they could step on the toes of a Johnny Cash.
    But electronically speaking, because I prefer synths (my toys :-)) to guitars, I like the 2011 version (stargate mix) better.
    We'll see later, by the way, I also like the album version of In Your Room better

  • @jeffreymosher6334

    I love and respect that you listen to many albums full focus and end to end. And in some ways I can understand why you may skip it from time to time. I got into DM at the point of “People Are People” and then learned their material back to the beginning. Outside of P A P and “Enjoy the Silence” I was always hoping that mainstream and the world would embrace and play DM as much as I was, … but be careful what you ask for. Overplayed album and single version leads to avoidance. But one of my many memories of my second year at college was hearing a local band do it acoustically. AND shortly thereafter I discovered DM doing this song acoustically as well.
    Therefore when I look to avoid the burned out regular song I lean into the acoustic mix.

    I have been listening to DM since 1984, I am 49 yrs old now. When I first heard personal jesus, I was like "What is this" it seemed a bit empty musically with not much going on in the spaces compared to other DM songs, but like so many other songs it grows on you in time. I play guitar now & then and actually learnt Martins bit off TH-cam, it's nice to play. Also he has his guitar tuned different for it, a big Gore-ism!!

    • @marc2000z
      @marc2000z ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Is it tuned differently? From the live performances I've seen in this song, it seems like Martin is playing it in E standard, with nothing lower than F# (2nd fret on the low E string).
      The only times I noticed Martin using different tunings is D# in "Precious", and "Useless", as well as live performances of "Barrel of a Gun" and "I Feel You" in that same tuning (probably to make it easier for Dave to sing them). And "Corrupt" in D (C# live!)
      I dunno if there's any other examples, but those are the ones that I can think as of now.

Its a good track, but I dont know why I do it .. For me it could be the guitars that I dislike . . I used to really hate guitars in that period. . . so it may be a habit :-) That is maybe why I didnt like so much of the 2 other albums after Violator

    I was in high school when PJ came out. I had been a fan since People Are People, so I was used to their mostly all-electronic approach. I knew Martin played guitar, and there was a little on Music for the Masses, but when I first excitedly put the needle down on the 12 inch (those were the days!) and first that stomping rhythm, and then that GUITAR! comes in! My mind was blown. And then of course the lyrics. What's this about? Personal Jesus? And now into more dangerous waters...I remember, Vaughn, you saying the lyrics are blasphemous. As a (uh-oh!) practicing (OMG!) Christian (RUN FOR THE HILLS!!!) I have to say I disagree. (Huh?) Now, I know Martin never meant the song as pro-Christian, but he unwittingly made a statement that lines up with the Bible. Knowing the backstory about Elvis and his wife worshiping him like a deity, Martin is absolutely correct that you should not turn people into gods in your hearts. The Bible mentions the many anti-Christs leading to the ultimate one, how people worshiped false idols, and that there would be many false Christs coming in his name. I know you had a Catholic upbringing, and well, no offense to any Catholics out there, but the Catholic church has a lot of lost souls to answer for, that's all I'm gonna say! Don't mistake God for the church! There's no such thing as a perfect church, just as there's no such thing as a perfect person.
    On a different note, I saw Weird Wolves in Austin last week, and they were great! Ava has such a beautiful voice, just like her dad. They had some technical difficulties, but they never stopped during a song. That's the mark of a great performer. I also like the fact that they have real melodies and good voices to back them up, when so much "goth" these days is cookie-cutter and usually the "singer" has no business singing! I talked to both of them afterwards, and I asked Ava when her next show was. It'll be at the Elysium in Austin on Aug. 27. Come on Vaughn, Norwegian Air has some cheap flights! I'd love to meet you as well! I'll treat you to some of the best Bar-B-Q and Tex Mex you could ever have! :-)

    My favourite track on the album, I can understand why it is skipped because it doesn't fit in with the other tracks. I always skip Enjoy the Silence, I've heard it so many times and it's been played to death on the radio, I prefer the remix versions. Congratulations on your good news.

    Still watching at 17' but one more time it is amazing how your and my point of view matches! Unbelievable... Absolutely fully agree. PJ does not fit very well in Violator journey, for instance Dangerous would have fit much better. However, that would I have made Violator a ore precictable and flat album, and that goes against DM rules. That being said, I allways skip PJ when playing Violator vynil, CD, DVD,... and suffer a short crisis when they play it at lives. I am a bit fed up with this song. I just listen to it when I need to analyse its amazing mix and mastering details for music production purposes. Thanks Vaughn.

    I used to dislike Personal Jesus , but as I’ve grown older, I’ve learned to love it. Violator wouldn’t be the same without it. It was a nice “hey, we’re Depeche Mode but we sound different “ in 1989. I wish they would have added a few of the B sides somehow to Violator- my favorite being sea of sin. Violator is perfection…. And this is me just trying to screw it up lol

    I understand what you mean about exploiting the sound of Violator with further albums but if you remember when they met up sometime after the Violator tour they all agreed (Martin, Alan, Dave and Flood) they did not want to make Violator part 2 but something as good as Violator but not sounding the same. I think with Songs of Faith and Devotion they achieved what they wanted to do.

    Personal Jesus is certainly a favorite, but I can see how it doesn't quite fit with the overall musical theme of Violator. I've heard it described as a transition from MotM to Violator but it probably bridges MotM to SoFaD even better. If it were 20-25 years earlier, Personal Jesus might've remained a non-album single with maybe Dangerous or Sea of Sin (or both) taking its place on the album.
    (edit: actually even without Personal Jesus it would've been a 42 minute album so they wouldn't have needed the others if they would've been okay with an 8-song album)
    I'm going to give Violator a listen without Personal Jesus and see how it feels. I can already "hear" the transition from Sweetest Perfection to Halo and it makes sense in my mind.

    Here Fletch is seen playing that little riff during the coda, at 4:51 th-cam.com/video/i2GEOcEcRtY/w-d-xo.html
    And here he's seen playing the little notes during the verses, at 1:13:26 th-cam.com/video/ECkQdGhKHbI/w-d-xo.html
    So, those chromatic notes in the middle of Fletch's keyboard are obviously used to play these parts :)

    The reason you frequently skip this song is because you've heard it so much, and don't want to actually get sick and tired of it. I do the same with the more popular songs on my favourite classic albums by DM, Duran Duran, and others - even - gasp! - Kate Bush. It also allows me to appreciate the album tracks more - and often my favourite songs on an album turn out to be the lesser-known ones.

World in my Eyes is probably my favourite track on the album, then perhaps Clean, Personal Jesus and Policy of Truth. I liked Enjoy the Silence more when I was younger. I know these things can definitely change with time. I didn't care for Walking In My Shoes that much for decades. But the last 2 years it's really clicked with me, mostly because I relate more to the lyrics. Now I think it's brilliant
