Our officials should know what they are doing before signing up to agreements. When things like this go wrong - those that signed the contract should be remanded in prison and investigated, if found guilty they should face jail time.

It's not a surprise. The government should not expect foreign companies to tolerate the shabby and corrupt way we deal with our local companies.
Nigeria should reciprocate by seizing the French government assets in Nigeria. The contract is between the Ogun State government and a foreign entity, except the Federal Republic of Nigeria was a party to the agreement. If not, it's unlawful to seize the Nigerian federal government's property. The state governments are distinct legal entities with their own powers and liabilities separate from those of the federal government. This is one of the ways that whites adjudicate a one-sided law. The French will not allow such to happen if the breach of contract is between a regional government and a foreign entity, you now go after federal government property. No matter who's at fault here, this is a wrongful seizure. Nigerian federal government should reciprocate with equal measure against France. This shows utter disrespect to the country. Another thing that must be looked at is if the court in question has jurisdiction over this matter. I would not be surprised if it doesn't. France is notorious for treating African countries with disrespect.

Yes, France has jurisdiction in this case. When the contract was signed, it had a clause that itb will be subject to international arbitration in case of any default from either parties. The Chinese are not stupid to give jurisdiction to Nigerian courts knowing how corrupt our judicial system is. It has gone to France, UK and USA courts and Nigeria has lost. Nothing to reciprocate here. Rather than reciprocating, they should pay the fine or find a diplomatic solution. This case, once again, just shows the mismanagement of our leaders--treating foreign contracts the way they treat citizens.

But the fact still remains that unless the Nigerian federal government is a party to the agreement, they should not be held liable in default or seizure of Nigerian federal assets. You need to look up the contract details as well as the constitution. I have been party to similar suits.
1st count. The contract was signed by the Ogun state government on behalf of the federal government of Nigeria. Go do your research.A state can not create a free trade zone without collaboration with the Federal government.
2nd Count. All land belongs to the Federal Government according to the Land Use Act of 1978.
3rd count. The Chinese were arrested by Federal operatives and not state police. We do not have state police, so the suit for unlawful arrest will be against the federal govt.
Lets not try to justify that ridiculous shameful behavior of the Nigerian Government. The Fed Govt is implicated in several ways.
