Cams & Timing - 1990 Kawasaki ZZR1100

Jamie is back in the shop to give me a hand installing the cams and timing the engine on the 1990 Kawasaki ZZR1100. We also need to have a look at valve gaps and find out what shims are going to be needed to get this bike running.

Good one for guidance! 🙂 replacing my intake cam, as some of this 1100 kawaz seems to eat the intake cam a bit over the years.. a small note for everybody doing this, remember to check the bolts holding the cam sprockets, should be Loctite on bolts. I messed up a 600 when replacing head and cams, where the bolts vere not properly fitted to one of the new cams, the bolt loosened after starting running and smashesd the crank sprocket after ending up there... Now your in it..lol...That's why I like to set.head up on a bench (or off motor)..I carry head to bike shop, and do the shims in the lot..No running back and forth..You'll be happy you did the valve adjusment..Nice quiet engine with plenty of power..(for racing, you set at the thickest limit for extra valve lift)..Rover's, Fiats, Jag's, Lotuses, etc. all used shims..then they figured out how to make Hydraulic lifters and they never looked back..You can get deals on old bikes and cars and all they need is a valve adj...Hardened shims are very hard to get and will only go up in value..Well done! and looking forward to hearing it run!!..👍👍👍🗽🇺🇸

It's coming along very nicely boy. Isn't it great spending time in the workshop, especially with a mate. For me though, I can only get into mine at a weekend. I'm a truck driver and away all week. So spend as much time as needed in there come the weekend. No missus to keep happy.👍

That's the bike my brother had back in the day. Its good fun working on the old bikes as they're quite simple to work on compared to modern stuff 😉

I was a 17yo lad and my older mate had one of those. He asked if I’d like pillion ride. I knew he was was a bit of a loon on a bike but I trusted him after he repeatedly said he’d take it steady. Well, on the way back from the bike shop he decided to ignore his promises and absolutely caned it. I had my hands locked on the rear grabrail and when he give it the beans I nearly flipped off the back, the only thing that stopped me was me gripping him with my legs for my life. Absolutely shit meself. Felt unbelievably fast. Got a zzr1100 99 now.

Nice video, I did post a comment earlier about a shim calculator, tried to show the link without actually entering the link, but looks as though TH-cam deleted it😢I don't do Facebook etc.
I know it's only math's, but you search for Triumph Shim valve calculator the 1st link takes you to a page for 1,2,3 and 4 cylinder engines

You the zzr carbs ..you can get lengths of o ring and seal them with cynoacrilate..it works with hydraulic rams.

A wee tip for next time ,the Haynes tells you how many links between the timing marks from exhaust to inlet should be and rotating the engine towards the tensioner to take up the chain slack.

Yeah the pan needs to come, flushing all through with oil etc and make sure there's nothing floating about in there. I'm notbtaking it off till the new gasket turns up though 😁👍
