      Very little difference… except for pro-raw on the 48mp Sensor.
      It makes me really feel like my 11 Pro Max is worth keeping.
      And the price.
      Think 11 Pro Max and an iMac… or just a 14 Pro Max 🧐

      I'm honestly surprised to say I prefer the style of processing on the 12 Pro Max most of the time. While the 14 Pro is technically better in many scenarios, the super sharpening really doesn't look good. And I'm not willing to deal with the headache of 70mb files. Another quirk I noticed comparing my wife's 14 Pro to my 12 Pro Max is that the 14 Pro often slightly under exposes images. They're still exposed properly but on the darker side. Lastly when comparing dark areas of the frame of interior shots, the noise/grain has only marginally improved. 2 years used to be a colossal difference in camera performance.

      Great video. Definitely not enough to upgrade from 12 Pro Max on camera alone, and not from 13 Pro Max at all. I know making this was a lot of work, but if you keep producing great content you will keep growing. Props.

    Love the comparison to multiple generations of devices. Many of us don’t upgrade devices every year, so the multi-generational comparison is truly useful. Doing the same for laptops, etc. would be great. Just think about how long people keep their devices (3-5 years) before upgrading. Then use that timeframe as the basis for the comparisons. That would be huge for anyone trying to decide if they should make the investment to upgrade. THANK-YOU!

    (I found your channel YEARS ago when researching the OWC ThunderBay DAS, and decided to buy based on your video)
    I gotta say, even on the examples where you specifically say the 14 doesn’t look much better, in almost every example it is noticeably sharper and more natural compared to the others on a 32” UHD monitor. I wouldn’t say they look “>$1000 upgrade” better, though.

    I appreciate these in-depth reviews. I am not one of those that does an “auto update” purchase on any schedule. These videos just help me cut through all the Apple hype and find out what is new. I do find it crazy that some make a spontaneous purchase decision based on a justification they were HOPING to find that has, in reality, little to no real benefit. I spend little more on a professional studio camera that will last for a decade. Apple has some great products but their mastery of hype exceeds their meaningful innovations.

But daylight shots are very close.The dynamic range on iPhones is pretty average and I don‘t like pictures where the sky is blown out. As an iPhone 13 Pro Max user I must admit that S22 Ultra shots look better when it comes to sky details and saturation.

    The expectation for camera on the iPhone is unique for each person. I have the 13 Pro. I went home back in February and spend time with family and it was night time. So it was an opportunity for me to try out the Night Mode with my 13 Pro. Everybody were blown away by the quality of the photos. I was shocked because I was a bit skeptical. I have to admit that the camera of the 13 Pro is impressive. I'm not a professional photographer by any means. Being an art major who was required to take Photography 101 back in the late 80's when digital camera was unheard of, I know a good quality photo when I see it. I've seen people with the most expensive cameras and have taken horrible photos. There is a science into taking photos. Understandign the lights and the F-Stop and aperture and so forth. A lot of stuffs have to be factored in and taken into consideration on how the photo is being taken.To sum it up, my 13 Pro does what I expect it to do and I'm pleased with the results. Great informative video as always!

    I think we have reached the development in phone cameras that there isn’t a truly noticeable difference between a camera from the same company unless you go 2-3 generations newer.
    The only way to see such minute pixel peeping differences is to put them side by side, but those days of taking a photo with a new phone and instantly knowing it was way better without needing to compare are over.
    Bad for tech enthusiasts however good for everyone. It means your current phone feels ‘good enough’ for longer and there’s less pressure to get a new one. This is actually the best thing for the environment tbh.
    It’s also the reason I felt very little need to upgrade from my pixel 4xl. Even though the new phones (pixel 6, iPhone 13 Pro Max, Samsung s22U) had finally surpassed it because the hardware differences just couldn’t be overcome with software any longer, the pictures it still put out where plenty good. That’s why devices like the pixel 6a can still take great photos that 95% of people would be happy with
    Sorry for the long rant

    Dang, awesome video, amazing detail and transitions are top notch. Thanks guys!

    I think the issue is the new 24mm equivalent lens. Apple hasn’t had enough time to finesse the new lens especially considering the 48 MPX sensor and new processor. I think time and firmware updates will hopefully see improvements.

    Does the 14 pro allow for optical lens switching while recording in 4k60? 12 and 13 use digital zoom when you switch to the telephoto during recording. Even outside, don’t know why. Great work on the in depth comparisons. Thanks!

    Thank you for the unbiased review! Finally a big TH-camr who values advocating improvement over views and likes from the Apple fans. iPhones have been having problematic lens flares and dynamic range for too many years. They also need some time to catch up on improving their pixel binning algorithm over competitions.

    I made a massive jump from iPhone 7 Plus to the 14 Pro Max, so I'm happy! but seeing this comparison, I think Apple did not had much time to work in the new 48 MP sensor. Perhaps a future software update will have notorious changes in video and photo quality.

  • @chrisak49
    @chrisak49 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    The biggest reason to upgrade to 14 Pro is the 48MP ProRAW shooting. The images are just next level above what you can get out of a 13 Pro. You’ll see the potential if you edit in Lightroom.

    • @mootsym
      @mootsym ปีที่แล้ว

      I've noticed some pro raw shots look a little flat compared to normal pics. Would the iphone photos editor be sufficient?

    • @chrisak49
      @chrisak49 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mootsym The pro raw shots are designed to be flat compared to JPGs. ProRAW removed all of the post processing and allows you to do most of the editing to make the photo the way you want it. iPhone Photos editor is ok but Lightroom Mobile is the industry standard.

    As someone said, it’s the 48 megapixel shots that are absolutely stunning! If you’re not into working with your photos and printing high quality or watching on a bigger screen it’s of course less interesting to upgrade from 12 or 13. I think most won’t use the 48 mp option. But I will 😊 Oh, and I upgraded from XR so everything is better for me..😂

    Of course the 2x digital will look great. Works like dx mode on full frame nikon d800 bodies. And because it’s working with closer to centre of the fx lens, the lens is working at its best, without edge of lens distortion or softening.
    Now the idea that digital zoom is terrible is because the resolving power of the lens is out resolved by the sensor. You often see pro grade lens with about 35mp effective resolution. Does not mean you get a 108mp sensor, you will get 108mp worth of details, the lens must catch up, or some image stacking. So when you crop into the 108mp, the sensor is not under resolved by the lens. There are tricks to get more resolution like Deep Fusion, or in camera world image stacking, foveon sensor in sigma cameras has very detailed 15mp 3 sensor stacking. Panasonic olympus and hasselblad also does sensor shift image stacking which has its limitations but does make up for lens lower resolution. So for a decent digital zoom. The sensor crop and lens crop should yield something at least 8mp worth of resolution and details. If the lens can only 24mp of details, a 2x crop will get you maybe 6-8mp worth of detail, I failed in math.
    Maxtech use to be a camera channel in case some newer subscribers are not aware of.
