      @@Tr4wnet I think he mentioned in his last Q&A that it is a problem with YTs policies talking about gun prices. Other than that, I totally agree. I think one of my favorite things on TV growing up was Tales of the Gun's most valuable guns. They talked about how one of Hitler's PPKs was worth well over a million dollars. They also said that John Wilkes Booth's gun he used on President Lincoln would likely be one of the most valuable guns if it were ever to go to auction. Another interesting one was the FN FN model 1910. When the show was made nobody knew where it was, but it was discovered later on and is in a museum in Vienna, I think.

      At that time, with a monopoly for producing the military model and very strict Ordonance controllers, the pecking order would be: 1st the revolvers to be acquired privately by officers, 2nd the duty ones for non-coms and soldiers, 3rd the police, customs, prison service ones, 4th the civilian market ones.

      The lowest bidder that still meets the requirements, both safety and performance.
      So usually pretty good, but not the best. The problem is that you then hand this gear to soldiers.

    Hi Ian,
    There is an immediate way to spot a civilian French 92 revolver on the left side: the lid has no hole. The ends of the axes of the hammer and the trigger do not cross it because the cover is only pierced over half of its thickness to accommodate them.
    Of the many civilian 92 revolvers I've seen, they had the same front sight as a genuine military MAS 92 revolver, so I think yours shows refurbishment or customization.

      Really, guns and bikes plus fishing reels were just about the only sport related mechanical products back then. Outdoors and sports equipment of a mechanical nature seemed to naturally belong together, and can largely be made on the same machinery. This is extra apparent when you realise that bicycle frames used to me made out of thin walled steel tubing, brazed or soldered together... Much like shotgun barrels are made of thin walled steel tubing brazed or soldered together to make double barrels. So if you had the machinery and skilled workforce to build double barreled shotguns, you already had more than half of a bicycle factory.

    6:40 Ironically, now the foreign-made 1892s are more desirable and expensive than the originals from Manufrance or the military. That is because a quirk in French law, where the originals are in Cat B (like modern handguns) but the foreign copies are technically a different model, and are classed in cat D (i.e. freely available for anyone over 18).
    I would also note a couple things about the ammunition (8mm92):
    1- This actually was a black powder cartridge, originally. It is only with the release of the Lebel in 1886 that smokeless powder became a public thing, and the 1892s were ultimately only ever used with smokeless powder.
    2- 8m92 ammunition is nigh impossible to find nowadays. As far as I know, only Fiocchi has some (at a ridiculous price).
    PSA: DON'T BUY 8m92 FROM FIOCCHI! It's utter garbage, under-powered to the point it's DANGEROUS. I fired 6 rounds from my Mdle 1892 (military issue, inherited from my grandfather) - of which three DID NOT CLEAR THE BARREL.
    I immediately returned the box to my gun dealer... and he later told me the sales rep he got in contact with that their import company had BANNED the import of that product because of how many issues they had with it.
    Cherry on the cake, the case is paper thin, so impossible to handload either... joy.
    EDIT: Ian, could you work your magic again and convince someone to make that cartridge available again? :(

      Is it safe to use .32 S&W on the Mle 1892?

    • @GigAnonymous
      @GigAnonymous ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Jacomedes It's a completely different cartridge, so short answer: no, it's not safe.
      Long answer: as far as I know and in .32 caliber, .32-20 WCF is *closer* to what is used in a Mdle 1892, as I've heard (but never tried) that it is common for handloader to "fire-form" .32-20 (trimmed) into 8mm92 brass. Do keep in mind that those very same handloaders also suggest using .38 Sp brass and a lathe to make 8mm92 brass... so there's more than a pinch of desperation and "système D" involved.
      (this being said - and I can't confirm because I don't have some .32 SW on hand - I'm very scared of the fact it might very well be possible to shoot .32 SW in a Mdle 1892, dimension-wise... with a lot of wiggle)

    • @GigAnonymous
      @GigAnonymous ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @L. S. They are... But powder is not, and you can cast your own bullets, so assuming you had brass you wouldn't really need a Cat B authorization with a spanish copy anyway.

    Recognizing that swing out cylinder revolvers date back to the Winchester revolver, my question becomes did Colt copy the French pistol for their New Army revolver's swing out cylinder or did France copy the Colt decision to make it's 1892 New Army revolver. Obviously S&W saw the sales profit writing on the wall and came to tate to the game with their own 1896 Hand Ejector revolver. But the question remains, did Colt copy France, or France copy Colt, or were they both independent and contemporaneous decisions to copy the earlier Winchester swing out design? And of course, how do we know 130 years later?

    do revolvers have any practical advantages over semi automatics?
    ive heard them described as "the katana of guns".

    • @con6lex
      @con6lex ปีที่แล้ว

      You can sometimes use 2 calibers like 357mag and 38 special.
      The handling is simpler in concept. For semiautomatic you have to remove mag then eject.
      No fear of limp wristing.
      Can conceivably fire from a pocket

    • @ScottKenny1978
      @ScottKenny1978 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A fairly short list of advantages and a list of disadvantages.
      Revolvers can be pushed into an attacker and still fire, a semi auto cannot.
      If a double action revolver fails to fire, just pull trigger again. As opposed to the whole "use other hand to rack slide..." mess of a semi auto.
      There's no chance of a revolver failing to load the next round, because you do that by hand and then the cylinder automatically rotates and indexes to line up correctly.
      ...
      Disadvantages:
      A revolver is heavier, it needs to have 5-8 chambers worth of metal.
      A revolver needs some careful machining to get the chambers to line up with the barrel every time.
      Revolvers have less capacity.
      Revolvers are slower to reload and it's a more complex action to reload them.

    This is much like the Berretta M9 and FS. The FS is a civilian production gun and the M9 is millitary, though in this case both made by the same company. They SEEM like the same gun, but if you put them side by side, you find they are not. Slightly different triggers, slightly different slides, and the dust cover for the M9 is straight while it is slightly curved on the FS...but basically the same gun.
