  • Now that I've had a chance to get my thoughts in order, here's my assessment of the Thor Love And Thunder trailer. Will this movie redeem Thor after Endgame turned him into a clown, or destroy him to make way for Lady Thor? Find out here.

What do bad writers do when they get to write Thor? "Oh, let's make him unworthy for the 23434th time." Thor has been deemed unworthy on shaky reasons and then worked his way to being worthy countless times. After seeing him put himself to the point of death and past the point of death a few times, fighting against evil forces for real life decades, we know who he is: someone who always ends up putting the lives of others above his own and fighting till his last breath to stop evil. If that is not a hero, then what is?

Valkyrie isn’t a drunk woman, she’s a deserting soldier that turned to capturing and trading slaves, who were forced to fight to the death, all to fuel her alcoholism, which is a million times worse. And how was she punished for this? She was left in charge. There’s no chance noble Asgardians would follow such a piece of shit, knowing how she behaved after ONE defeat.

      Not much.
One of the theories making it's way on the internet since the trailer is that "Laydy Thor" is actually not Jane Foster ...or at least not the Jane Foster we know. That she actually comes from a different timeline, and that would also explain how Mjölnir is back.
I suspect that the trailer actually doesn't give much of an idea of what the movie is really about. There are rumors that Beta Ray Bill is in it, even though he was not shown, and we know Gorr the God Butcher is in it, and he wasn't show either. At least I wouln'd be surprised if "Thor needing to find himself" is only like the first 20 min of the film, and then we get to some Galaxy changing disasters and Multiverse shennanigans!

I don't see them handing a franchise as big as Thor over to a 40 yr old actress. Portman looks good, damn good for her age but c'mon! She's not gonna start looking younger and if they want even 2 more movies from her, she's going to be close to 50 by the time it's done. They'll probably set it up as Lady Thor being the daughter of Thor and Jane from another time-line or something.

I remember how "Thor Ragnarok" ended with Thor taking up the mantle of King of Asgard and how proud I was for him. He learned humility and the importance of selflessness, had been pushed out of his comfort zone as a privileged royal in order to stand on his own two feet, lost his parents, his eye, and his homeworld, all of which led to him earning the role of king. Annnnd then in "Avengers: Endgame", he's reduced to a drunken manchild who is more concerned with playing videogames and eating until he's an obese stereotype rather than leading the survivors of Asgard and the Snap. At the end of the film, Thor decides to hang out with the Guardians of the Galaxy rather than accept his royal responsibilities and gives the position to Valkyrie, who had so far done nothing to suggest that she was deserving or even qualified for the job. Thor worked his way up to being king, becoming not only a worthy leader but also a good person, suffering physically and emotionally to improve himself. Meanwhile, Valkyrie is just given the title of "king" without having to work for it. I mean, in the "Thor: Love and Thunder" trailer, we see her attending some kind of important meeting and she looks f***ing bored. Yeah, that's definitely someone you'd want to have running things: someone who seems as though she'd rather be anywhere else instead of a person that respects the position they've been given and the responsibility that comes with it. I'd rather follow Fat Thor instead of a miserable, smug and condescending person like her.

Well, that's just it, isn't it? It's been given to her. She didn't earn it. People often don't respect the things they've been given. I'm sure this isn't what Tiki was going for, but it's ironic that he nailed it accidentally with her.

Natalie Portman's presence in this film pretty much makes me feel cynical about the whole movie. Portman ditched the franchise when it was pulling in mediocre numbers, but once Thor became a billion dollar brand she was eager to get another big paycheck. Through Endgame, Thor had appeared in three solo films and four Avengers flicks, and the best Thor stories were all without the Jane Foster character. In other words, Thor improved as a character no thanks to Portman, who thought the MCU wasn't worth her time. But now that they turned around Thor as a brand, she's back.

I was really looking forward to this movie when I was watching the trailer, but as soon as I saw a Lady-Thor I knew that this was going to be a shit show.
I remember in the comic books after Thor had a brief fight with Lady-Thor he tried to call the hammer back to him, and when he thought the hammer was coming back to him he reached out to grab it but then it smacked him in the face and flew to Lady-Thor.
It was at that moment that I immediately hated Lady-Thor.
And that was the main issue with Marvel trying to replace all their classic characters with diversity hires, they were completely disrespectful to the classic characters.

Jane dies because she quite literally can't handle the power of being Thor. Everytime she picks up the hammer it's slowly killing her, and in the end it does. And Thor gets mjolnir back.
The movies a solid 7. But what I appreciated was Thor is the main guy. He's the main hero. Lady Thor and Valkyrie are his support. His back up dancers. He's the one that saves the day, and has ti save them multiple times.

You'd think that at the end of Thor's character arc, he would see that there are VERY few people who are worthy of such jobs (Steve, Vision) and he would make the right choice to lead his people. This comes after his father straight up told him, Asgard is not a place, it is a people. Well, fuck. You know, the saddest part is that if they wanted a lighthearted action romcom so bad, they still could have done it.
Imagine: King Thor of New Asgard of Earth, struggling in the diplomacy the throne requires. Thor has no representation in the realms, and now Jotunheim comes calling to challenge Thor for the throne to Asgard, as he was technically never coronated and Loki was stolen at birth and his lineage has more claim to the throne by his honorable death before the Mad Titan (maybe the patricide/regicide Loki did made him King of Jotunheim through conquest, and therefore his title passes Thor's as Asgard's Crown Prince, idk). We could have the 'Love' of 'Love and Thunder' be someone's bright idea to try a political marriage to stave off another invasion. The Frost Giantess offered will be "the smallest noble they have," but she is obviously a honey pot/black widow, part of the secret coup for her to return control to Jotunheim once she marries and murders Thor. Thor is oblivious and genuinely smitten with her, all eight feet of blue skin and red eyes. Have the comedy be their wedding procession/political campaign through the Nine Realms, her failing several times to discretely murder Thor as she grows to actually like him and the conflict between the pride of her people restored and her heart, Thor juggling his strange new bride and struggling to build alliances with the other Realms due to him and Earth being perceived as weak, both of them flubbing the customs and sensibilities of every planet they hit, etc. The main conflict can come from other people who seek to conquer Earth now that Odin is dead and no longer a deterrent. Maybe Idunn's immortality apples can't grow anywhere else, so it's a resources thing, or maybe Thor's time with the Guardians of the Galaxy led to some bad situations that are coming to a head now. Hell, maybe Hela is undead and goes across the galaxy collecting souls for her new realm Hel built on the ashes of Old Asgard, and has come to collect Thor's. So many ways to write an action-packed romcom that hits all the quadrants without shitty characters like Jane Foster and Valkyrie.

Christian Bale was fantastic as Gor, Natalie Portman feels less out of place than she had in previous Thor movies and Emma Thompson is a literal goddess walking among men, but this movie was a disappointment. There were some good fight scenes, great special effects and a few funny moments, but the movie was drug down by two things (spoiler alert):
    1) Taika is his own worst enemy. The movie was filled with silliness and juvenile humor (even moreso than Thor: Ragnarok), the sort that is more likely to elicit an eye-roll and a groan than a laugh, and bouncing back and forth between the silliness and the efforts at making Gor a truly haunting - and haunted - villain clashed terribly, making it almost impossible to take the film seriously when it wanted you to.
    2) I don't think Disney could push the gay thing harder if they wanted to. Korg is gay, Korg's dads were gay, Valkyrie is bisexual, Heimdall's 13 yo kid is a transsexual (complete with a 'dead-naming' lecture) and even Miek is crossdressing... I suspect that there were more than a few parents who brought their children with them to see some light family entertainment and were not at all prepared for the conversations they had to have walking out of the theater (a la Lightyear).
There were some other minor complaints (with Mjolnir and Stormbreaker, we have to watch Thor fight with Zeus' lightning bolt the whole time - a Greek God's weapon which somehow has the power to give anyone, or everyone, have the power of Thor???), but the two above are going to be what ultimately hurts the film. They should have taken out the five or ten dumbest jokes and given us more time with Gor to really set up the tortured soul that finds eventually finds redemption. I think this movie is going to end up being one of Marvel's least successful outings thus far despite all of the stellar talent attached to it.
Also, for those keeping score, we now have a female Thor, a female Loki, a female Captain America, a female Hawkeye and a female Ant-Man with a female Hulk, a female Black Panther and a female Iron Man on the way.

Man, Valkyrie was such a rotten piece of shit of a character in Ragnarok. Even when she was nearly blackout drunk she was shown as never failing, always getting the upper hand on the hero and at no point having a moment of humility or regret for all the awful things she's done as _goddamn slave trader._ The only "failure" she's shown having is in her backstory, where she was merely one of the many soldiers falling against a formidable enemy, and the only reason we saw her lose that battle was that the enemy was also a woman. She's all the while arrogant, pretentious and disgusting yet she's instantly forgiven by Thor, never taken to task for all the terrible crimes she's committed against the hundreds, probably thousands of innocent people who indirectly met their death thanks to her. But of course, who better than her to rule a community of exiled people? As a king no less, which means she clearly wasn't chosen by them.
The worst part is that we all know this damn trailer is very likely some bait and switch crap that's going to pretend Thor is the protagonist of the movie while the whole thing is going to be Jane and Valkyrie being best friends/lovers as Thor takes a backseat.

The big problem with all of phase 4 really seems to be that they're trying to do hand-offs to people who ... haven't been built up. The Falcon getting Cap's shield is the closest they've come to actually trying to do a hand-off with a developed character, and the problem there is that they didn't develop the Falcon as a sidekick to Captain America. They developed him a little with Bucky, but that's not how legacies pass down. Sure, they're friendly, even friends, but they barely did any heroing together. Giving the shield to THOR would've made more sense in terms of emotional and spiritual connection.
I think Tony's daughter being her own heroine with her own origin story has potential, but they haven't explored that, yet. Using her familial connection to her father does give some of the emotional heft; she's continuing the STark story as much as the Iron Man story, and much of her formative experience centers around Tony's presence in and absence from her life. She can rehash "daddy issues" that Tony had to face re: Howard in a different light, and explore living up to a legacy she naturally inherited while making it her own.
Jane Foster... because she's been out of the movies for much of "the good ones," and Thor has had so little interaction with her, there's not a shared connection with the ongoing narrative. ...this is my own bias speaking, here, but I think that what I'd have done if I wanted to hand-off a Thor legacy to a new actor is I'd have stolen from Journey Into Mystery's Kid Loki arc, and gotten as young a sufficiently-talented actor as I could to play Loki reincarnated as a kid. Make Thor take on the big-brother-as-father-figure role to his brother, who is for all practical purposes a new character due to the cleansing amnesia of reincarnation, and who is struggling with his own legacy and a desire to live up to his brother Thor's expectations. Let HIM be the heir if Thor is handing it off. He can be both Loki and Thor's legacy heir into the next phase, maybe even using illusions to be "Thor Jr." or just "Thor" out of a sense that Thor is who he SHOULD be and having to learn that he can be the cunning but good-hearted guile hero, instead of having to be either the villainous Loki or the kind of hero that Thor was.

I just looked up, according to sources, Jane didn't get snapped out of existence. So then what was she doing for those 5 years, because it sure wasn't helping put the universe or even Thor's life back together? She wasn't helping trying to track down Thanos. She wasn't mentioned as leading the rebuilding efforts. For essentially a decade in the MCU she was living off the luck that Thor fell in her lap. If this isn't an alternate universe Jane, there's no way she can be worthy. except she has the vagina.

The message from Marvel these days is that identity doesn't matter. Any character can be any other character. No one is special or unique, because they can all be replaced by someone identical, or even superior.
They also love the notion that everything is a "mantle". Whereas Spider-Man used to be the superhero *identity* of Peter Parker, he is now just a placeholder. He has the mantle for now, but it can and will be passed along.
The worst is Thor, however, because Jane didn't "adopt the name" of Thor and didn't become Lady Thor. She actually *became* Thor (according to marvel and several fans) though I am not sure how that is supposed to work, since it's his actual birth name and not just a title.

@@reviewwithyou2 Yeah some of the fat jokes were horribly done, it could've been handled better. But I still argue that Fat Thor is a better attempt at seeing someone cope with depression and PTSD than they have done before. Sure, he could've slimmed up and dropped the weight, but he didn't feel deserving or worthy after failing to kill Thanos the first time. He gets panic attacks and doubts himself more than anyone else. The man becomes a walking example of self-hatred, pity, and hopelessness. The absolute look of joy in his eyes when he calls Mjolnir back and it answers really hammers it home (pun intended). He's. Still. Worthy.
It would've been cheap to have him go back to "normal" and pretend his mental issues are gone. That's like telling someone who's had a depressive episode to "just feel better" and thinking it works.
I hope Drinker's idea for a script is right, cause it would make sense for him to try and leave it all behind, only to learn that now is the best time to take back the mantle of Thor Odinson, rather than bailing and giving it to Jane.

I'm saddened to say as a marvel fan that the glory days of the MCU died with endgame. In the past they cared more about stories, character arcs and staying true to the characters, now of days it's nothing but woke agendas like pushing LGBT, feminism, gender and race swapping. For the love of Mike why can't we have good strong intelligent male leads anymore also why do they have to keep changing characters race just bring in a character that's already African American and stop changing the orgins of other's same can go for gender swapping. At this point it breaks my heart to see marvel going in this direction as a fan and if they continue this path I will no longer follow along. I just hate how they're replacing every good lead male with a woman and they treat the ladies like if they're superior. Pretty much this. Drinker is right in that Thor was going on the MC growth journey through all the films but he forgot one very critical point - Thor's arc fails at the final step. "You should have gone for the head" was the very moment his hero's journey crashed and burned. Hence Fat Thor. This new self discovery path is about him coming out of them. It's essentially what happens when a person loses their business, falls into depression, and then gets on the wagon to put their life back together again.

The biggest problem with Thor is that he comes with Responsibilities he cannot avoid. This is something that our current culture is working very, VERY hard to eliminate from our world - no more Hereditary Titles, no more Sons following their Fathers into Trades, no more Generations of one family running one business, etc. Our fates are not set by our birth, but by our actions - that's the world we're trying to create. Hollywood chief among the culture-weavers.
(and yes, this is utterly and entirely hypocritical as they also want to collectivize the responsibilities of the past onto the people living today who have no connection to those past actions)
Thor is a demi-God, which he gained by virtue of Birth and can't get rid of. He is the son of the King in a society in which power is inherited via Birth, so Thor WILL be King unless he's deposed or relinquishes power - and even then, as long as he's alive he's a threat to whoever takes that power because many will see him as the "legitimate" and "rightful" ruler, so will try to put him back in there whether he wants it or not. Thor HAS to be a Leader. He HAS to be in command. He HAS to live up to being a God and a King.
But that's not something we want as a culture in 2022. In 2012, we accepted it. We might have felt a twang of pity for Thor, who has infinitely more power than us, but no true Freedom, but we accepted that his story arc was him learning how to be a better Leader and King. This is what makes Thor's 1 and 2 better movies for THOR than Ragnorak - which was hilarious and I loved it, but in retrospect it's not a good movie for Thor. It COULD have been, and we kinda sorta maybe got some minor developments in that direction, but they were all undone by Endgame.
And now we have a character who is untethered to a character arc, and it just looks... bland.

He lost half of the Asgardians in the ship *under his rule* and decided he was unfit to rule. Now if he isn't king, as was his destiny, then what is he. Who is he? That's why he's going on this journey.

  • @mallios13
    @mallios13 2 ปีที่แล้ว +40

"Thor goes on a journey of self discovery" is pretty fucking shit when you consider that was his origin story. The guy goes hundreds of years acting like a prick, then suddenly Odin gets a wild hair up his ass and decides to humble Thor. Why? Because Thor attacked guys Marvel's take on Aesir (Oh, I'm sorry, "Asgardians," because we're all five-year-olds who can't use proper terminology) were already prone to attacking.
Then we get that again with Ragnarok, where he rediscovers his true power after losing his prosthetic hand phallus.
Then we get that again with Infinity War/Endgame, where he's coping with mounting losses and not killing Thanos properly, but at least he gets a bigger hand phallus.
Now we're getting it again with this, and his sort-of love interest nobody cared about gets his original hand phallus reassembled.
It's amazing how many times you have to turn your life around in one decade after so many centuries of never needing to worry about it.
Honestly, this movie would be amazing if it involved the deaths of both Jane and Valkyrie, because nothing else about them would be interesting. Unfortunately, it's another Taika Watiti piece, and even anti-woke people are prone to giving him excuses because he makes sure to include a few puerile giggles into his movies. So that guy's gonna continue riding the woke train of Hollywood because he's a convenient blend of two ethnic groups that gives him a free pass, while hailing from Hollywood's favorite playground the past couple decades.
But from what I've been hearing, this movie has been a nightmare behind the scenes and they're hurrying to fix things, so I can't wait to see what that'll be.

However, I did not like the comedic turn in Thor: Ragnarok. The sharp turn to Thor as stand-up comedian seemed odd and out of place. Fat Thor was an ill-conceived conceptualization of a perfectly good idea--that Thor would come out of infinity War completely lost, depressed, and disconnected from reality makes total sense. I watched the second film a few times still can't remember much about it.

I’ve loved all the Thor movies, even dark world. Ragnarok wasn’t a joke in my opinion, and was quite good with its characterization. The shift in aesthetic was weird but it was a great film in spite of that

I disliked that the Grandmaster was made out to be some complete weakling. He's a fucking elder of the universe, he deserves some respect at the very least.

I agree on everything except aboit the grandmaster (jeff Goldblum) in thor ragnarök. He was so funny, made you forget valkyrie sometimes
