My favorite aircraft mechanic instructor, Stu Miller, used to fly as a flight engineer on Pan Am cargo 707's. He told a story about being mid-Pacific and talking to a sister ship returning from Japan, with proper 1,000 foot altitude difference. They were looking for each other and starting to joke about each other's navigation being off when a dot appeared on the horizon, which grew into a 707 in just a couple of seconds and flashed overhead. The lesson was that at closing speeds of 1,200 mph there is simply no time to react once visual is made.

I was once on a flight back from Lisbon to Frankfurt with Ryanair and over Spain another plane was roughly on our height (definitely not separated by 1000 feet) and also whizzing past us in opposite direction as I was looking out the window all the time. if Boeing made their wing spars thicker and made them out of a harder material like titanium both planes would have survived the impact with little more than a hefty repair bill
Cycling Cycles no material can survive being sliced at 1000mph with the momentum of an entire private jet and a 737 behind it. Titanium would’ve had the same result.
This is my first comment on a video after watching many many of tour videos, Alecc. I have been a nervous flyer in my life even though I have flown many times throughout my short 38 years. more so when you recreate the flight in a simulator using the actual FDR data (this video is woefully inaccurate as to the maneuvers that actually happened) the actual flight path and aircraft behavior is so much more surreal and haunting than FS2004 can simulate (even X-Plane 11 with its wing failure menu cant quite match the real thing, though it comes pretty close)

That was the second time that an American plane collided with a Brazilian airliner, killing everyone on board. Just a dejavu from 1960. All the same, reckless operation, poor ATC and no fault on the airliner.
They turned the transponder off to "get to know" the new aircraft and check its features without being monitored by ATC. Irresponsible and ultimately criminal.
I haven't seen anywhere that they turned the transponder off on purpose to "get to know" the new aircraft features. Can you direct me to a source? I want to read it.
I can direct you to dozens of sources, but they are all in Portuguese. It was all over the Brazilian media at the time of the accident and also on Cenipa's final report that the pilots turned the transponder off 7 minutes before the collision and turned it back on 3 minutes after it. They denied it, but it was on the FDR. The speculation was on the "why", whether it was on purpose or by mistake. However, there were testimonies at the time of pilots stating that it was common practice among pilots when new aircraft were purchased and shown to new owners. Funny that this information is nowhere to be seen in those documentaries... brasil.estadao.com.br/noticias/geral,piloto-do-legacy-desligou-transponder-no-acidente-da-gol,289349 www.estadao.com.br/noticias/geral,pilotos-desligaram-transponder-inadvertidamente-diz-cenipa,292185 www.correio24horas.com.br/noticia/nid/piloto-do-jato-desligou-transponder-em-acidente-da-gol-diz-fab-1/ www1.folha.uol.com.br/fsp/cotidian/ff0612200817.htm veja.abril.com.br/brasil/transponder-do-legacy-foi-desligado-por-pilotos/
Damn, that was awful. Had not heard of this accident. I assume by their lack of mentioning the airliner they just sliced a wing off that they didn't see it and had no idea what happened? And why was collision warning system turned off on the Legacy? Why would it even be possible to turn such a critical instrument off?
The recovery of the bodies from the GLA1907 was specially nasty. It fell on the middle of the Amazon, on an area not even the natives'd venture to due to how dense and far away from resources it is. The military crews tasked with recovering the victims' remains and investigating the crash had to deal with a blistering, humid weather; while being constantly bitten and harassed by the infinite bugs that inhabit these woods, while the same bugs were also crawling all over the victim's corpses, eating them almost as soon as they had crashed, worsening the already nighmarish state they already were. The Brazilian Air Force made a documentary on 2016, even visiting the crash site, were the 1907's hull still sits ("VOO 1907 - 10 anos depois", it's on TH-cam). It's a really sad amalgamation of errors from multiple parties, that ended up in the merciless death of the one party that had done everything by-the-book. It caused (and still causes, scroll down and see) widespread commotion here, with the semmingly lack of consequences to the Legacy pilots causing widespread outrage with the brazilian people. Heard everywhere growing up people asking to think what would happen if a plane being flown by clueless brazilians making such fundamental mistakes crashing and killing a plane packed with americans, as if lifes can be accounted with such base value as nationality.
Hey Joshua, a guy named JustAviation has quite literally just copied and pasted this video onto his channel. I feel that this is pretty important to tell as plagiarism is not appreciated and you spend a lot of time to work on this video.
The ATC was primarily at the mercy of their equipment, but I just can’t help feeling the Legacy crew were also partially to blame for turning the transponder off. Considering they were having so much trouble contacting the ground, the transponder was a vital piece of equipment.
No. Their transponder was on. Their TCAS was off. That would have possibly prevented this. That was a huge issue not discussed. The small jets TCAS was off.
8:53 in the photo op with the black boxes, the guy in the middle looks like he's about to break. I can only imagine the things they all saw in the crash site. RIP everyone who perished in GOL flight 1907. 🙏
They did, the captain after a moment (you can hear on the flight recorder), he says: "I'm still worried about that other one, if we hit another airplane, then there's someone out there in trouble too", something like that!
It probably made a nice enough cut that the massive amount of air pressure while moving that fast ripped the wing off rather than just the tip of the small plane doing all the work
@@ElectronicDust636 yeah I suspect the collision only broke the main spar, the torsional forces then broke the rear spar (which is when the wing actually departed the aircraft) if you listen to the CVR very carefully, you can hear what sounds like 2 collisions about a quarter of a second apart, the first one is the collision, and the second one is the wing actually breaking off the plane This is also evident if you look at the wreckage, you will see the left wing is bent back toward the tail, indicating that it was not a clean cut, and in fact the rear spar was not severed in the collision, but instead was broken by torsional and bending forces
For anyone wondering, those scences of the gol flight crashing and slicing of the legacy's wing tip were not in the flight simulater; they from National Geographic HD's show,'Air Crash Investigation'. This is mostly likely because there was no setting to simulate that senario on the flight simulater.
Absolutely shocking crash. No words are sufficient . The Brazilian authorities are fully responsible for this accident. To put a poorly trained controller in this position was outrageous. May all the poor people who lost their lives because of the incompetence of others rest in peace. Great video of the accident.
No. There is much more to it and the pilots of the embraer (lil airplane) are guilty (they have been convicted). They turned off many safety mechanisms and basically transformed their airplane into a ghost, thus making it impossible for the Gol to know that there was another airplane nearby. The pilots of the Embraer even tried to hide their airplane and flee. They went so far as to hide the damaged part of the wing and lie about the reasons of the damage (when it was discovered).
Matheus is lying. No such things as "hiding wings and airplanes" happened, that's total BS. Indeed, the Legacy pilots were convicted but most of the blame are from brazilian controllers. This video shows that clearly. Flight controllers failed to inform the correct flight altitude.
It could've also been that they were severely traumatized and were cheering and laughing to try and cope with it. That looks and sounds very scary to end up in a situation like that.
this is got to be one of the most terrifying air disasters. due to the fact that for that gol flight there was absolutely nothing they could do. very sad and everytime i watch or listen to the gol cvr it gives me chills. all those people meeting their maker and nothing they can do about it.
What you didn’t say, was that one plane changed from a generally eastbound course to a generally westbound course, and should have changed flight level by 1000 feet.
Ok I have to admit something... honestly....I always thought your videos were annoying because of how they were made..... but I love them now...they grow on ya....I watch every one of them....keep it up...you do a great job at this
I remember seeing in tv that before the pilots could talk to anyone in the base they where put on a phone call where a big name in airforce asked them a lot of key questions without yet saying about the crash. Like tcas and such. After the call the base commander called paladino and ofered him a drink before breaking the news
The altitude rule is East/West not North South. So in this case, 37,000 if flying East (0° - 179°) and 36,000 (or 38, etc.) when flying West (180° - 359°). If they were flying exactly North (0°) then 37,000 would have been correct, but they were flying North-West (315°), which is why they planned for 36,000.
I got so mad when they all started laughing and congratulating each other when hundreds of people just died a horrific death. But if they were unaware of what happened to the 737, I guess it's okay.
The reason these two aircraft came together was the accuracy of the navigation system each had. The systems kept both jets right on the centerline of the airway. In the old days airplanes were seldom on the centerline, but were always correcting back to the centerline. In the old days there was less of a chance of a midair with a wrong way airplane on an airway. Long before this accident pilots started started introducing a 1 mile offset to the right to keep the airplane off the airway centerline. If either one of these crews had used a 1R OFFSET both of these airplanes would have safely arrived at their destination because they would have passed one mile apart. If both crews had utilized a 1R OFFSET they would have passed 2 miles apart. The air traffic controllers in China have been using a standard 3R OFFSET as a standard practice for all the flights in China.
Familiarizing themselves with the new plane's systems. While in the air. Carrying five passengers. Yeah-boy!!!! "I'm still figuring out how to work this Fight Management System" Why not tell the passengers that?
bank angle, bank angle, didididididididididid (plane rips apart from g-forces), poor people didnt have a chance with that much of the wing destroyed it was impossible to control.
I knew the captain of the 737-800. In the late 70's he lived with his parents in the same building as my girlfriend then. I was starting medical school. In my early 20''s. This was in Brasilia. The first "modern" ATC was built by the French in the 70's. The problem had always been both radar & voice control over the vastness of the Amazon. I remember visiting the ATC center soon after its inauguration. I was impressed by the "synchronized" radar system. They managed back in the 70's to have a computer system inn Brasilia, that combined the data to all airports in Brazil "SINDACTA" On one screen we could see the ""sweep" showing all the flights in the country., kind of like Flight Radar 24 today, but obviously there had to be a delay is 5/7th of the US territory in size. Radar towers with generators were placed in a way to cover North & NW of Brasilia the main corridor tor traffic to & from N. America to Rio and São Paulo. Audio only via VHF or HF ( lousy most of the time) . I lived in front of the Brasilia Airport while in med school. I had a VHF receiver& a good pair of binoculars! I basically learned aviation in Category B airspace from listening in my spare time. What most people in the US realize is that JFK to RIO is a 10 hour flight 5:20 h from JFK to Manaus, in the heart of the Amazon. From Manaus to Rio it's about 4 hrs & to São Paulo ( GRU) it is slightly over 5h flight!
I can think of no greater sales bullet point for the Legacy than the fact that it had a wing strike with a much larger plane at cruising speed and the Legacy landed with minimal problems. A terrible tragedy that could've been prevented with competent ATC staff. C'mon, Brazil... get your shit together.
“We’re alive!” Unfortunately the 160+ people on the plane you smacked into, aren’t alive. I’m just a passenger, not a pilot, but shouldn’t the pilots of both planes seen each other in time to dodge or something ? I realize the Legacy’s pilots were distracted trying to figure out the plane they were flying but I don’t understand how out of 4 pilots not one seemed to notice
Well think of how fast airplanes are flying. Probably about 200 mph. Flying on the same level and going that fast, they never saw each other coming. Just remember how big that 737 is compared to the jet.
Do Philippine Airlines Flight 434 small bomb explosion on mid-air to japan damaging steering and aileron control cables, but the pilot managed to land the aircraft
So they safely land and congratulate each other with "Good job" after they just took down a whole other plane because they had no clue how to fly theirs. Wow.
The pilots knew what they were doing, it was the ATC’s fault. There was extremely poor communication, which, after the accident, Brasilia ATC took notice to and changed to avoid another accident like this. Had there been communication with ATC, they would’ve directed the pilots to turn or get higher.
@@morp1 Have you already read the CENIPA final report? It wasn't just an error by Brazil's air control, it was also negligence and error on the part of the pilots. He doesn't invent things to defend the pilots.
37,000 feet. The captain tries to figure out how to work the flight management system. ATC is not taking calls. "Good job!" Yes, stellar. Only 146 people dead for no reason. This would be comedic if weren't so utterly tragic.
Both aircraft were flying so fast that any part that touched would be destroyed, the embraers wing could have been torn off instead, in this case a few inches made the difference between the 737 crashing, the embrear crashing, both, or neither
That little edge was like a knife slicing through aluminum at 1000+ MPH. The fact that the Legacy wasn't also destroyed is a miracle. A few inches higher, and they'd be dead. A foot or two lower, and no one would have died.
alternatively, if Boeing used stronger materials in their wing spars (like titanium) and made said spars thicker, the whole accident would have resulted in nothing more than some fines, a huge repair bill and 154 scared (but still living) passengers and crew
Damn... What a nasty spin, break-up midair, and crash for the GOL 1907... But seriously, how the heck that Legacy manage to slice that left wing of that plane like straight out of Zenitsu!? But that legacy plane has only small damage on the winglet? Damn!
Yup, in fact the sim video and the following CGI from outside the plane are opposite. In the sim cockpit-view it correctly loses lift in the broken wing, and it begins banking that way. When it cuts to the outside view, it's rolling in the opposite direction.
I figured flt sim would have the correct roll, but I guess whomever did the outside view wasn't an aerodynamicist, only something us aerodynamicist would notice.
Flight sims in general do not allow you to (at least easily) simulate such crazy conditions as missing a wingtip, certainly not fs2004 which is what he's using. The within cabin roll he's simulating with input. The other animation is generally taken from some documentary about the crash in question, and yes, they often get it very very wrong ;)
BeamNG drive could probably simulate this crash quite well with its softbody physics engine, assuming the plane is made with enough JBeams and linkages in all the right places (the B25 Mitchell is currently the best mod plane in the whole game, and even it needs some tweaking)
The American pilots had their TCAS off we still don’t know why apparently they didn’t know the aircraft to well. That aircraft was brand new and they were bringing it to the US. Also they were contacting the ATC on the wrong frequencies that’s why the ATC couldn’t hear them. Thy tried 12 times before the collision between Brazilia and Amazonia. They finally were able to contact them after it. There is a video on TH-cam (Aviões e Musicas) with the person who investigated this accident where he explained what happened but it’s in Portuguese. So don’t say the fault is in the ATC they were contacting them on the wrong frequencies! Brasília and Amazonia did have a good communication coverage against what some people say.
Mudd My first point stands undisputed. Secondly, they were on the wrong frequencies, and had to find the correct one, which took them 12 tries. Please keep up.
I can't imagine the reactions of the Legacy pilots upon being told that they just brought down a passenger jet carrying dozens of people. Tragic and completely avoidable💔

I can't believe the tinier craft initially survived the impact.
Yeah! I think about that too. I guess the tinier is faster than 737?
That’s because it didn’t get two thirds of its wing sliced off.
If it had been head on both planes would have been mauled instantly
if Boeing made their wing spars thicker and made them out of a harder material like titanium
both planes would have survived the impact with little more than a hefty repair bill
This thread is a mess...
These videos give me so much perspective and knowledge about the accidents that happen in the airline industry. I really appreciate your craft and attention to detail. For some reason this one is going to stay with me for a very long time. I can’t imagine the same day juxtaposition of cheering passengers after the small plane they flew in took down so many people. This one breaks my heart. They all do. I keep wanting to change history but changes are made after each incident. I will keep watching! I’m quite addicted to these! Thank you for all of the work you do!
Respect to the captain for trying to keep his younger co-pilot calm in what he must have known was the end for them all

The CVR of the GOL is just... heartbreaking :/
more so when you recreate the flight in a simulator using the actual FDR data (this video is woefully inaccurate as to the maneuvers that actually happened)
the actual flight path and aircraft behavior is so much more surreal and haunting than FS2004 can simulate (even X-Plane 11 with its wing failure menu cant quite match the real thing, though it comes pretty close)

After hour of flying: “jose, lets get familiar with this new airplane “.
That was the second time that an American plane collided with a Brazilian airliner, killing everyone on board. Just a dejavu from 1960. All the same, reckless operation, poor ATC and no fault on the airliner.
ATC error and pilot error. They did not know the Embraer systems very well so they did not notice the TCAS was off. Horrible tragedy.
You mean their transponder.
The transponder of Embraer it's off
I can direct you to dozens of sources, but they are all in Portuguese.

"The pilots try familiarizing themselves with the new plane's systems"
Yeah that won't lead to anything bad I'm sure
I'm going to look up the video.

@@Jackiezyon blame ATC for putting both planes at the same altitude in opposite directions
They did, the captain after a moment (you can hear on the flight recorder), he says: "I'm still worried about that other one, if we hit another airplane, then there's someone out there in trouble too", something like that!
Yes....that angered me. Idiots.
That was so weird that the 737's wing ripped off.
I guess the wingtip of the legacy is so strong.
It probably made a nice enough cut that the massive amount of air pressure while moving that fast ripped the wing off rather than just the tip of the small plane doing all the work
@@ElectronicDust636 yeah I suspect the collision only broke the main spar, the torsional forces then broke the rear spar (which is when the wing actually departed the aircraft) if you listen to the CVR very carefully, you can hear what sounds like 2 collisions about a quarter of a second apart, the first one is the collision, and the second one is the wing actually breaking off the plane
This is also evident if you look at the wreckage, you will see the left wing is bent back toward the tail, indicating that it was not a clean cut, and in fact the rear spar was not severed in the collision, but instead was broken by torsional and bending forces

Thanks Matheus. That was absolutely outrageous. There are no words to describe such criminal behaviour.
@@Martel03 They landed ASAP at a military base. How do you hide a damaged wing? That didn't happen.
Matheus is lying. No such things as "hiding wings and airplanes" happened, that's total BS. Indeed, the Legacy pilots were convicted but most of the blame are from brazilian controllers. This video shows that clearly. Flight controllers failed to inform the correct flight altitude.
Don't put all blame on one side. Pilots had the wrong charts (with old radio frequencies not used anymore) and had the tcas off.
The pilots on the Legacy were cheering that they lived, not knowing 154 people were dead in the jungle.
Ok I have to admit something... honestly....I always thought your videos were annoying because of how they were made..... but I love them now...they grow on ya....I watch every one of them....keep it up...you do a great job at this
Allec, if u could re-upload this, could u please re-upload Avianca 52? That video was the best of them all.
I WAS NOT expecting that @4:25-omg, those poor passengers and crew!

The fall of the 737 is even bleaker once you know what they're saying.

OUTSTANDING ANIMATION. GREAT JOB
Had there been communication with ATC, they would’ve directed the pilots to turn or get higher.

pretty ridiculous to sit back in your chair and think that from their reaction to surviving something as insanely terrifying as that.
I have (played baseball). I wonder if they actually saw the plane they hit. The pilots of the plane that survived could tell us.
They didn't know they hit another plane until after the landed
The Boeing 737 was the best plane ever, and pray for GOL airlines😭
Im not a expert but that little edge of the wing took off the wing of the 737? You would think it the other way around.
Brinski depends on where it hits, I guess.
+Maverick44 Correct
alternatively, if Boeing used stronger materials in their wing spars (like titanium) and made said spars thicker, the whole accident would have resulted in nothing more than some fines, a huge repair bill and 154 scared (but still living) passengers and crew
Damn... What a nasty spin, break-up midair, and crash for the GOL 1907...
But seriously, how the heck that Legacy manage to slice that left wing of that plane like straight out of Zenitsu!? But that legacy plane has only small damage on the winglet? Damn!
They were both at a very high speed, and those winglets are bigger and stronger than they look.
I believe the 737 would be rolling the opposite way.
These are great. Good work 👍
The American pilots had their TCAS off we still don’t know why apparently they didn’t know the aircraft to well.
