The Insta360 Ace Pro is an action camera a lot of people are talking about at the moment. They have been purchased by a lot of people around the world and a lot of people are beginning to notice the quality you can get from an action camera this small. It has internal 8K recording which is pretty incredible.
This video I put the DJI Action 4 up against the Insta360 Ace pro to see who the real action camera king is.
These are all my findings and conclusions and I try to give you the most accurate videos as I possibly can without any biased decisions.

At 2:31 Have you tried setting the sharpness to -2 on the Action 4? The result would probably be slightly more comparable
I am happy with DJI action 4, you can record in 10 bit in normal mode which is huge, honestly the photos from OA4 is incredible considering it's only 12 megapixels, and if your lens get damaged you can change it which you cant do with ace pro.
Honestly can't go wrong with both. I just wanted to see if the differences were massive
Actually you CAN remove the lens cover on the Ace Pro. Insta360 put two small drops of adhesive on the lens cover to make it harder to take off initially. Who knows why. It doesn’t make it more waterproof. The ace Pro lens cover has an O-ring like the Action 4. Personally, you can’t go wrong with either one.
You can change the front lens on the ace pro, it's very easy and you can buy lots of different lenses and filters to swap about.
@@bruceskousen5451 I belive they copied the dji but copyright got in the way so they glued it.
What is 10 bit mode?
I shoot motorcycle TV show. The camera lenses get cracked a lot. Therefore the DJI is the winner for me. The AcePro is not an action camera in this regard. I believe the AcePro looks like an action camera due to its form factor, but it’s not as durable as an action camera.
In durability you can go for action 4, on the other hand if you want perfect contrast, 8k, low light performance, stabilization, then Ace pro is better solution
I think it depends on what you're doing with it. If you put it at the end of a selfie stick and occasionally on a bicycle or something, it's plenty good as an action camera. I have its older sibling mounted to the front of my helmet. I don't need to worry about its durability there, so much. I put action cameras on helmets for many years and have never damaged a lens.
You can replace the lens of the Ace pro, there are tutorials on TH-cam. Also, you can use a screen and lens protector
@rajarshi_ithis problem was discussed by another guy on TH-cam. Some of the camera in the first batch/batches were faulty. The company replaced some for those who made the complaint
Love the authentic comparison! Gotta say, Ace Pro is pretty slick. It's got those pro features without being a pain to use. If you're just doing your thing and need something reliable, it's definitely worth a look.
No amount of digital stabe will correct motion blur, so the "dancing" or shimmering background is entirely due to shutter speed. You can get the exact same stabe on both if you match the shutter speeds, but then you will get a darker image and you'll have to crank up that ISO.
What would be interesting to see is putting both cameras to full manual, setting the shutter to 1/200s to get identical stabe, and then increasing the brightness and adding noise reduction in post editing. In theory, because the Action 4 has less/larger pixels, the results should actually be slightly better than the Ace Pro in low light.
I appreciate it's super convenient the Ace Pro does all this in camera though, which is a benefit, but at a much higher price, size and decreased durability.
Why decreased durability? Is Ace pro less durable because it has 8bit color depth or image correction?
@@mp7161 physical durability: it has a tilt screen which is a point of failure, no lens protection either so easy to scratch/crack, larger size can snag on things easier, it's a lot less durable for use in sports or if you drop it.
Hey buddy, I have a question, I want to make Kurt Caz like videos, with a similar POV, do you think I should get the action or just get the pocket with the extra lens?
Thanks for another great review Jason, this video comes just in time for my australia trip. I think I will get an ace pro after watching this video, very convincing, especially the huge difference in zoom-in image between the action4 and ace pro, it is obvious that I can have more post-production flexibility with the ace pro. Keep up the good work!
thanks for watching. Enjoy your trip!
Thanks for your professional review, which camera can take Video/Photo simultaneously like ex-GoPro 6
Ace pro's interface seems more user-friendly compared to action 4, especially for regular users like me. The low-light performance difference is huge- Ace pro has a lot more details. Great video!
my unit has audio missing when push start recording, miss like half sec and has click sound whenever i stop recording. in some mode when u press record and start talking like 1 2 3 4 until 10 u going to have some cut off or video first sound came later or audio missing, i cant remember whether its normal video mode or pure video mode. i have seen one of the youtuber experience this too but cant remember his youtube ID
Great comparison! I own both and like each for different reasons. If forced to choose one though - I'd go with the Ace Pro.
it really was hard to choose a winner. So many pros and cons
What would you say is best on your bike to get the colour of the sky etc
Great comparison as always!
Any tips for getting the warp to be fully gone on the Ace Pro? I just got the Ace Pro and while it's nice, I don't find it better than the GoPro Hero 12 in video quality for my use. The de-warp on the Ace Pro does not fully de-warp. I also don't find the video quality as great as everyone posts about. My side-by-side comparison shows the hero 12 to have better clarity (I film workouts in a garage). I use the hero in 5.3k with flat coloring. I have used the Ace Pro in 8k and 4k with flat and medium color and neither produced results as good as the Hero 12. I'm trying to find what I'm missing since most channels that post about the Ace Pro say it is superior to the Hero 12 in video quality. Any thoughts?
Which is better for surfing? Ace Pro or Action 4?
Very good comparison video, thanks for uploading. One question, can you remove the selfie stick on the Studio app?
I bought the INSTA360 Ace Pro
and the next day I returned it. It is not a consistent camera. In my opinion, the DJI Action 4 is better.
what problems did you encounter>?
yeah ive heard it extremely inconsistent
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema Thanks for answering, I was recording in a forest during the day and on many occasions the image was grainy and the texture of the leaves would look strange. I also recorded inside my car and a lot of grain was seen compared to the DJI Action 4. The DJI action looked much better.
So you had one day with the camera. Likely you did not know how to use the camera best. There are lots of settings. It is a Pro camera.
@@wilfredolopezwdjvideo That AI technology is still new so I wouldn't trust it for a while.
The main issue for me is the ace pro having close subjects slightly out of focus due to the larger sensor. Is there a solution for this yet?
It is mainly the minimum focus and both are set to infinity focus. The sensor is the same size in both cameras.
Many people use diopters with the Ace Pro for shooting close, close up filters.
why is it this video is like sponsored 😂
Great overview on these products, definitely helpful in making my decision.
Glad it was helpful!
imo the low light performance on the ace pro is better than the OA4. also, the gesture control option is pretty convenient.
yeah that is what I think too
1 year later, people sale their insta360 for newer model, the buyer of that 2nd hand crack the lens cover, rip lol
Ace Pro like twice the price lol
Action camera "VS" without any action :)
Good comparisons, ace pro's use case is far more convenient for me and the color palette looks better.
Ace doesn't have 10 bit. I got the DJI Action 4 to go with the DJI Pocket 3 and DJI Air 3 drone. Happy with these 3. I can get every shot I need out of a small backpack. The only way I would get the Ace Pro is if it was my only camera since it has a tilt screen. But I would never use an action camera in low light. That's where I would use my Fujifilm mirrorless cameras or at the very least my Osmo Pocket 3 is great in lowlight with the 1" sensor. I only use the Action 4 for mounting to my car, boat, bike, longboard, paddle board, etc... My favorite action camera mounts are the suction cup mount, super clamp and neck mount.
The insta colors are over saturated but the camera image is awesome.
Yeah steve, I guess each to their own. I like both for various reasons but neither are perfect
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema Agreed! Sony needs a good action cam!!
You can shoot in Flat color mode to reduce saturation, and increase dynamic range.
@ 7:37 -not sure what setting i have wrong but in Video recording mode and Photo mode, when i double tap it says, "Cannot zoom now." In "pure video" mode it *will* zoom-in as demonstrated. Any advice / insight?
Just saw a comment that really stands for my statement from an another video...
'DJI and Insta have really taken over the space.
The reality of the modern action cam market is that most users are not jumping out of airplanes or doing extreme sports with their action cams... at least, I am not... I just dig the form factor for recording family vacations and other memories.
So with that in mind, while DJI has a nice price and might be good for some "traditional" action cam users, I do believe you get what you pay for. Seems like more value in the Ace Pro, from the software + AI stuff to the flip screen, low light function, etc. Plus it just looks more sexy 🤣'
Agreed. 99% of people that get any of these won’t do anything extreme. But that 1% will enjoy it when they use it. Kind of similar with Almost every other filmmaking camera. Specs are far more than we ever need
Did you mention that Ace pro does not shoot in 10bit? And only shoots in HDR in 4k? And your stills comparisons feels lacking, though I agree no one buys these cameras for stills. The other big omission is setting the Ace Pro for use with wireless mic transmitter, that's a mess and comes at quite the added cost. Has me wondering if your comparison is bias, possibly sponsored by Insta360? Yes, the low light looks better and flip screen is nice. But feel like you presented this in a way to make one seem better than the other and not in objective way.
Ace pro has HDR inall resolutions, except 8k, at frame rates 30fps and below
Ace pro also ads new compatible wireless devices. Hope that will ad Samsung smartwatches too. With every firmware update they fix things and add new ones.
Also, Ace pro doesn't has 10bit color profile because the AI processor couldn't handle such bit depth, to process it in real time. But if you have a good image, you don't need 10bit for post editing the colors
Excellent and comprehensive review thanks. I'm primarily a photographer (Ricoh GRIII and Fuji X-Pro2) but am doing videos on my iPhone 13 Mini and post in LumaFusion. I am really attracted to the INSTA360 and am going away in 5 days so not have enough time to get acquainted. BTW we're off to W Australia. I like the idea of attachable filters but how does one rotate a square CPL? I assume one has to take out the nano SD and connect to my iPad via an SD card reader rather than a USB-C cable? BTW I've been diving using an ancient Xi video cam my son bought me over 10 years ago with excellent results.
I’ve since discovered the mobile app transfers the media. So far enjoying the device and ecosystem.
In Germany the Ace Pro costs 450€ and the DJI Action 4 only 330€, also i think for the stuff you do with an Action Cam and also the 10 bit color grading the Action 4 is way supperior to all the others. Low light looked better on the Action 4 and the removable lens for also ND Filters is just the best solution. And for me i dont like the AI Solution on Insta because as a professional Photo-/Videographer, if the unedited and raw better then an AI Controlled stuff then it wins because you can do in the afterwork everything too
Get the Insta360 ace pro here www.insta360.com/sal/ace-pro?INRW1AE
Can we still use dji Mic 2 after the last ace pro firmware update ?
14:22 nice biceps ;)
IMO, I would still chose DJI Action 4 over Ace pro since they don't have removable lens. DJI also offer adventure combo that gives you 2 extra batteries and a charging case that doubles into a powerbank and much more.
apparently the lens is actually removable
I think a lot of people are judging specs more than the fact these are action cams. I adore the ease of use of Insta but the DJI is going with me for those risky scenarios where I don’t want to worry about a drop.
I'd still choose DJI Action 4. It's smaller and less chance to overheat. Using it for street photography POV.
How about the comparison on both batteries?
No problem take a telesin power bank selfie stick just start your video without worrying
If you provably look at the snsts360 footage it is green colour more than dji acton, iPhone or gobpro
You mean King of Vlog cameras!
haha yeah I guess. Depends on the circumstances
Does the ace pro heat up?...I'm truck driver and in thinking of buying ace pro
ace pro is a littel bit better when it comes to overheating
0:21 Honestly, the color on the Action 4 looks more natural to me. Acepro always has that strange red tone...
btw, I think the Action 4 has a much larger FOV than the Acepro, 155 FOV vs 100-ish FOV (calculated from the 16mm equivalent focal length), why does it look so different at 3:27?
7:05 To be honest, the small differences in low light didn't really convince me that AcePro is worth $500 . Except for the stabilization part, I'm actually surprised that the Action 4 didn't fall back a lot compared to Ace Pro, considering AcePro uses an AI chip and increased the price way more than an average GoPro.
16:58 I've heard that AcePro's flip screen can't flip up while wearing the diving case. Is it true?
i think the Action 4 is now only $299. Seems like a good time to pick it up?
--0:21 Lights in the back are shaking, you pretend to be blind on that
--3:27 How can we not mention the massive stabilization crop on action4?
--7:05 That shaky light is one big factor in determining whether the footage is acceptable or not, it is either yes or no; I don't think anyone would pick the shaky footage if they want to ensure their video quality
--16:48 you won't be able to watch your image through that little front screen anyway underwater
--As for the PRICE, I think what matters more is whether people are satisfied with their purchase; what's the point of buying a $299 camera and finding out that you can't take it out once it gets darker during the day? You will end up spending more money to replace the action 4 with a more versatile camera that can support your need in all conditions
You really can't go wrong with either. These are just nit picking at the end of the day. Both very solid action cameras
@@jakevisuals1 what's the point of buying a $500 action cam and finding out that you can't even get a clear selfie shots at 40cm? Ace Pro claims to have a minium focus length at 40cm but in reality you can only get clear shot at 60cm or more. what a pity. check 8:39 at th-cam.com/video/00xtG43Mggw/w-d-xo.html
00:21 - I don't think the tiny light shaking is important to me, cuz it's less noticeable compared to the heavy red ton on Ace Pro, and you can easily eliminate it by turning on the EIS priority function on Action 4.
03:27 - I guess Jason probably used the wrong settings on the Action 4, might have turned on RS+ or HorizonSteady. Action 4 has a 155 FOV which equals a 9mm equivalent focal length. It should be way larger than Ace Pro.
For the low-light parts, I don't think there is a clear winner in this game, even though Ace Pro looks better in this video, but it only happens in Pure Video Mode which is limited to 30FPS OR BELOW, not my usual settings for an action cam. What's the point of buying a $500 action cam and finding out that you can't take good video and video quality get way worse once you set higher than 30fps? 😉
350-ish USD is a fair price for an action cam in my opinion; anything above it is overpriced. Ace Pro doesn't even have a removable lens cover, and the flip screen doesn't work with the diving case on. Its FOV is so narrow that I can't even see my arm while shooting POV. All I want for an action cam is small, rock solid, and no freezes at all, but Ace Pro failed all of them and gave me a bunch of marketing AI gimmicks. I would rather go for Action 4 this time for my motovlogging and summer vacation. Plus, I've used Action 4 in low light as well; the footage is decent and clean if you also turn on the Lowlight enhancement mode, same as Ace Pro.
But in general, I don't use action cams in low light. None of them can compete with Osmo Pocket 3, which I already have.😅@@jakevisuals1
Actually, that much larger FOV on the action 4 is primarily why I went for the ace pro. The action 4 shoots way too wide for my use case and images and video always looks like something that comes from an action camera. Whatever setting you use to lesson the degree, it still looks weirdly too wide!
The problem with 360 pro is the screen and Not lens protection!!!
Let's compare a 340€ camera vs a 480€ camera. Which could be better? Obviously the difference will be huge, it is almost 50% more expensive too. It is like comparing a Ford to a Mercedes
I think I would choose INSTA 360 pro ace
who overheats first?
one test i didn't do. Long record times is not something I do with the action cameras personally
DJI, but not by much.
emmmm, I would say... Ace pro low light performance is way better than the OA4 lol
Talks about drone footage yet only shows the footage from the Insta360 Ace Pro. Also, never talks about the focus issue on the Ace Pro. We get it, you don't want to mention any negatives as it will upset your relationship with Insta360.
This video is so biased that I couldn't finish it. Another paid video.
I own both the Action 4 and the Ace Pro, and this video confirms that Insta360 has done an outstanding job in ensuring its cameras deliver top-notch performance in all conditions. With that in mind, I can take the ace pro out and shoot all day without worrying about any unusable clips, even at nighttime. One major difference is that the Action 4 consistently loses stabilization in low-light conditions, which is a dealbreaker for anyone doing low-light cinematic production. In contrast, the Ace Pro performs much better under these circumstances. I have hardly noticed any issues with my low-light clips shot on the Ace Pro, as it maintains a higher shutter speed while keeping the ISO the same, which helps to eliminate any jitter that the Action 4 just can not do
Yeah the low light stabilisation is better in the Ace Pro
@@DavCro C'mmon now, when he said cinematic production I doubt he meant a Hollywood Movie so I don't think you're going to get much out of those 2 bits with respect to that. They OA4 and AcePro both sell Gimbals, and the 360Ace is actually consistent. Precooked, well, go manual. Recording at night, go with the Ace, stabilization is better at night. Let me guess, you have the OA4? The deal breaker for most will be the zoom in at an actual 60 vs 40 or inability to change the lens.
@@DavCroDepends on the use case. Strapped to chest while mountain biking in dark forest for example. Action camera. Not vlogging.
I may choose low light
Action 4 all the way
Insta colours seems too much red in low light.. look to you pinky skin, and ,,gray" road
dji action 4
I see @robbylayton just picked up the Ace 360 Pro.
