Hey, thanks for the awesome video! My daughter's 2002 Jeep Liberty was not heating and had a leaky radiator. I bought the same pump you used at Harbor Freight ($64.99), mixed CLR at about 30 water/70 CLR mix, and switched the flow about every 20-30 minutes for about 3-4 hours. Then rinsed with water. I just used a small bucket and some HF clamps to hold the hoses. Needless to say, this worked perfectly. The Liberty has heat, which is good in MN, and I didn't have to tear out the dash, AC, etc. Again, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the video. I went out and purchased the same pump and used the same procedure on a 2008 Tundra with a heater core that has been plugged on the left side. Worked extremely well. Took about an hour of working it both ways through the core but it now has heat. Great job thanks for sharing!
I did the clr flush on a f150 2001for the heater core with good results. Used a small fountain/ pond pump from harbor freight for 9 bucks. Ran it about 2 hours and flushed out with clear hose water for 5 mins after. 👍 thanks for the help.

Wow! Those pump motor brushes are yuuuuuge! I'm impressed. They definitely don't build cars for serviceability these days. I'd have been too scared to put CLR in my heater core figuring it would eat thru and end up all over my floor. Glad to know it'll work! I'll definitely keep that trick in my back pocket. burningdinosaurs, I was surprised at the size of the brushes too. By the time those wear out, the pump housing will probably be shot. The CLR really worked well. It's definitely worth a try if your heater core is plugged up. Thanks for watching! 🙂👍
Man I feel you because I have a 2008 Jeep Liberty and the heater core is clogged with hardly any heat and you know as well as I that it’s a nightmare to get to to change. I tried back flushing but was scared it would burst it as it’s only meant for 10 psi. Anyways how is it still holding up? Any issues with this? I’m scared CRL will eat the aluminum heater core up? Thanks
@@ghostley8155 yes I still have heat. I was nervous as well. I wouldn't turn the pump on all the way till the heater core became unclogged. As long as you rinse the heater core out with water in the end you should be fine. I'll probably give it another flush after summer. Good luck.
I wouldn't be scared of the flush. Worse comes to worse you were potentially going to replace the faulty core anyway. So if the flush works, big win. If it doesn't, move on to replacing.
I've never used a pump, nor chemicals. (I think that would be the more permanent fix, short of heater core replacement). I always just removed both hoses from the core, and used the ol garden hose nozzel. Spray one way, then reverse. Repeat until clean. You can see the crap being forced out.

Thank u sir This just saved my ass ...I just did this to my 03 blazer ...my heater core clogged and had my engine over heating so I just bypass the core in order to get to work ...its -15 here right now ...I had to drive to work for a week with no heat .....saw this video went to get the hf pump and menards for some hose and clr ...hooked it all up tryed pumping the reverse of how coolant flows ...it really didn't flow much but when I switched directions it shot water everywhere lol ....flushed her about 3-4 times until water was totally clear put new heater hoses on and man this heats blowing great ...thank god ...💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽

Ken Gamble, a hole in a heater core is no good. Heat is a necessity here during the winter. I don't blame you for not wanting to tear out the dash. That can be a daunting task in today's vehicles. Thanks for watching! 🙂👍

So if the core is really plugged how much pressure can that pump develop? A typical heating system only holds about 10psi. You can easily pop your core pressurizing it with a garden hose or electric pump.

Sometimes Harbor Freight surprises the heck out of me. Every so often you get a bit of kit from them that'll just last forever, or they'll include random spare parts that one of the major companies would happily have charged you an extra 50 or 100 bucks for.

I wish I knew this trick 10 years ago. The wife's Dodge van heater core clogged up and I kept flushing it with water also reversed the heater hoses every couple months. Must be a Dodge and Jeep thing.

barry hansen hiluxs are cooler than Tacomas, way tougher. We can’t get hiluxs in the US because of a stupid thing called the moose test.... government BS crash avoidance testing. Tacomas are as close as we can get but there not the same chassis and we can only get limited off road features compared too you.

You may need the extra impeller. I used similar pump to empty pontoons on my dock and the rust chewed it up pretty good. I got lucky by turning impeller over to keep using it. Now I keep the spare impeller with the pump not in the spare parts box in the garage. You might also check to see if the hoses collapsed internally, that is a common problem.

2004 Jeep Liberty here. OPE!! No heat unless I am driving and RPM's are up there much above idle. Can't warm the car up and then hit the Minnesota roads without my snow mobile suit once it is single digits or below zero. Once I have been driving for 10-15 and RPM's are above idle the heat finally kicks on and it will eventually get REALLY toasty until I get back to a longer idle (like sitting in the Hard To Fart parking lot going over my list)😂 Do you think next time I am in Hard To Fart I should grab a pump? Also does the 50-50 CLR/Hot water mix just keep cycling in/out of the bucket over and over and then you just reverse the 2 hoses at the heater core on the firewall?How long do you run it each way. THANK YOU!!
Just so you know, CLR is acidic. That's what makes it do what it does. If you use anything like that to clean your Core out, you're gonna want to make sure you flush it all out thoroughly with hot water.

You are wrong about the heater core being placed on a stand and the car being built around it. The heater core and windshield wiper assembly are actually hung on fishing line, and then the car is built around them both.

Hey I know this video is 2 years old but how is the heat today? I been battling reverse flushing my heater core in my 08 liberty for awhile now. I’m not going to pull the seats, dash, steering wheel off for the core or pay someone 2k to do it , also any worries of the clr eating away the aluminum in the core ? anyway thanks!
I have the same problem I have heat for a few seconds then I have to turn it off and wait few minutes to get warm air again lol. I just don't drive it in the winter lol. I took it to get it flush but the mechanic said it's not the heater core like and idiot after I had it towed home. I said flush it not diagnose it because the blend door isn't working however I have it on the heat side so that's not the darn problem. It's a car and the heater core hoses are a nightmare to get to without dissecting the top of the motor. I told him after I got it back and he said to send it back and he would flush it but I was kinda mad paying to have it towed there and back plus his fee for whatever he did I told him to piss off lol.
Sorry was it clogged from the outside, dealership is quoting me 3100 because he said the heater core is clogged from outside , I wonder if this method will work for.me
It might. But, I would install a tee with a valve on the output of the pump. That way you can regulate the pressure. A pressure gauge would probably be a good idea too. Most heater cores are designed to work at 15psi or less. You don't want to rupture the heater core.
No. I didn't run it through the radiator. Sorry I didn't explain very well. The heater core was almost plugged. Flushing it like this worked very well. Before flushing it, the heat at the vents was only about 70 degrees. After, it was 135-140.
Well, the flush worked great. Lots of rust and now the input hose to the heater core is scorching hot. Unfortunately, I’m still running down this heat issue. Last possibility is the vacuum system. I can verify this treatment works great though!
Why even bother doing a video without showing if t worked? People facing this problem don't know if they should do what u did. If you can't show it actually worked. I guess u may have sold some little pumps. From harbor fart.

I thoght it was genuis to use a pump. But there was no discovery if it worked. From what i searched for and didnt see u leave a message here to say it worked. I assumed it didn't work. We used hot boiling water with the Iron out solution which is just like CLR it cleaned a lot of junk out and it brought heat but those flip doors arn't sealing so we are gonna have to tear it down. To change it all. Well thank you for your response and the idea of using CLR . THE PUMP IDEA IS GREAT. Ill get one another time. Since its costing a lot to fix it. Anyways i apologise for having a smart butt attitude. 😩😩😩😩 please forgive me.😑😑

I used to do flushes like this on big heat exchangers, we used acid then circulated a neutralizer. It worked pretty good.

Nice that the pump has a rebuild kit. Many of the hard to fart tools have no spare parts. Just throw away.

A foot valve would be optional. If I remember correctly, I used ¾ inch heater hose. It's been a while since I made that video.

CLR will damage aluminum, just use water, or radiator flush which is safe for aluminum.

Will a sump pump work in a bucket?
It might. But, I would install a tee with a valve on the output of the pump. That way you can regulate the pressure. A pressure gauge would probably be a good idea too. Most heater cores are designed to work at 15psi or less. You don't want to rupture the heater core.

No. I didn't run it through the radiator. Sorry I didn't explain very well. The heater core was almost plugged. Flushing it like this worked very well. Before flushing it, the heat at the vents was only about 70 degrees. After, it was 135-140.

Well, the flush worked great. Lots of rust and now the input hose to the heater core is scorching hot. Unfortunately, I’m still running down this heat issue. Last possibility is the vacuum system. I can verify this treatment works great though!

Why even bother doing a video without showing if t worked? People facing this problem don't know if they should do what u did. If you can't show it actually worked. I guess u may have sold some little pumps. From harbor fart.

I thoght it was genuis to use a pump. But there was no discovery if it worked. From what i searched for and didnt see u leave a message here to say it worked. I assumed it didn't work. We used hot boiling water with the Iron out solution which is just like CLR it cleaned a lot of junk out and it brought heat but those flip doors arn't sealing so we are gonna have to tear it down. To change it all. Well thank you for your response and the idea of using CLR . THE PUMP IDEA IS GREAT. Ill get one another time. Since its costing a lot to fix it. Anyways i apologise for having a smart butt attitude. 😩😩😩😩 please forgive me.😑😑
