I always thought it was cool when you couid send a company $2 and they would send some stickers. I know that's a little low but it has a little bit of that Golden Era Flavor.
My main complaint about most of Sole Tech is that they consolidated their midsole/outsoles to just a few based on the brand. Unless it's a collector's model, they'll just use the stock soles that they have. I understand it's for saving money but it does affect the look and sometimes the quality of the shoe.
To be fair, eS did this a lot in their heyday. The Tribo/Vireo/Oarb all had the same sole. The Scheme/Sparta/Omega all had the same sole. There's a few more but I don't have a catalog in front of me. Sole Technology is still a core group with no corporate ownership so I'm sure their income and budget isn't what it was 20+ years ago so it is understandable that they reuse/combine.
Started highschool with air walks, then simples. Then I really got into skating and we were the best at it thanks to my dad having a stack of plywood, welder and an abandoned pig barn up the road that had never been used. With that I created our own skate park allowing me and a select few to skate when our Canadian winters came. Closest skate park around 1996 was 45 mins away and none of us drove cars yet. Had blue kostons blue marc Johnstons and my final year of high school had globe Mullens which were my best shoe and I traded in my skateboarding for the goal of trying to getting high everyday.
I had a 2004ish? version white/gum with shitty leather that peeled up but I traded a pair of dvs for them sooo ya know. Times were different back then.
I had prob 8 pairs of K1 growing up … arto saari comes to mind first for some reason .. the 197 sole is so bad … if they put an accel sole on the 197 would be way better .. the Quattro sole is a rock magnet
I got a pair of Grind King trucks from Vertical Urge in Raleigh, NC in a raffle and they were the only truck I’ve ever broken and I was probably 125lbs soaking wet. It was either Venture, Thunder or Independent after that. The one shoe I wish they would bring back is Duffs shoes and the original Kareem Campbell model blue with gum soles. In the trilogy video and it was a great shoe. I wish I could have held on to them all these years. I wouldn’t mind him to the Axion reissue if the KCK. The Koston 1s were a great shoe but they were expensive compared to all the other shoes at the time. I had multiple pair only because I traded stuff for them.
Growing up I literally owned every Koston shoe eS' released. Some I had multiple pairs of. I'm 34 and I kick myself in the ass everyday of my life for not realizing how significant they were at the time and keeping all of them. So many classic shoes I used to own from Reynolds 1,2, Ellington 1, 2. The list goes on and on
In my experience skating the Quattro's (same sole as 197) is the tread pattern grabs pebbles like that's what it's made to do. Don't get me wrong, it's grippy and skates well. Until its loaded up with rocks scratching up your grip tape. It's the main reason I haven't bought the 197's. Cause for me that sole is a nightmare. I spent more time cleaning out the grooves than actually skating. I didn't even finish skating the Quattro's, I gave em away.
@@GoldenEraCollector a bit of advice: if you decide to skate your 197's... Skate them at a clear park(indoor would be best), or on fresh blacktop. Even wear a different pair to the sesh and change out when you get there. Otherwise, it's gonna become too much for your ears and be time consuming trying to keep the sole clear of tiny pebbles. It literally picks em all up. Those grooves hold right on to em. The sole is mad grippy otherwise. I don't know how long it lasts durability wise tho. Didn't get that far before I gave up on the Quattro's.
I always comment this on countless videos but the number 1 problem with the 197s sole is that the OG Koston upper was designed and made for a wider toebox and a thicker proportioned midsole. I had the neon green/blacks and the blue grey pair back in the day new and after buying the 197 in gum dark navy and trying the recent 197 in neon green black I couldn't buy them again. Just holding a brand new neon green/black pair brought back some good memories. Skating and burning through the original ones myself and seeing some amazing skaters wear them back in the day, holding them and seeing a brand new one around 25 years later in person but I couldn't bring myself to buy them for that price. They just looked too too weird with that jammed up pointy toebox and shallow midsole. I'll keep the navy ones ones if I want a nostalgia trip. BTW Don, Pierre, and Soletech owns every design rights to the shoe, the general design was copied surprisingly for 1 model when Koston moved to Lakai for the Fully Flared video. It's a bummer they're using the sole they're using for the 298, it needed a real runner toe without stitching. Given the success of the Muska and the Creager it's surprising they went that route I'm guessing it was too late along production... maybe!
Imagine how pissed people would be to see a true K1, K2, K3 reissue after buying the Evant, 197 and 298. Honestly, I'm just gonna buy the white/navy 197 and that'll be it. I heard even the next batch of accel OG are going back to the early 00's silhouette
Es. Since they came back is weird. The muskas look spec to me but I never had the Ogs back in 97. I missed out on em. The suede like material feels cheap AF though. I’m curious if the OG’s felt the same way. Like you mentioned in the past video es just feel cheap or budget to me. For the same price I can skate Ishod’s. I want the 197 and 298 but prolly not gunna buy them just cuz they not exactly like what I remember seeing. Huge wasted opportunity on their behalf. The muskas prove they are capable but I still wish they would use better materials. My favorite reissue is still the Dime legacy. I got a NOS size 11 in box and a wearable pair.
i think i'd like the 197s better bc i'm not crazy about the airbags. i have 3 sets of old grindkings, g5 highs, 2 pairs of g6 or g7s, like the ones you got here
@@GoldenEraCollector i kinda like the new sole. do you think you'd like it if not comparing it to the original? like imagine the koston one never existed and the 197 was the original. i guess the ridges around the sole might feel weird to skate, but i think they fit the look of the shoe
@@GoldenEraCollector it’s a bland looking sole, thick open treads, one solid color. It comes from a time where es was just not trying hard enough. Funny because a couple years ago they had those hideous accelite shoes that actually had the Koston 2 sole. Someone told me when shoes go out of production the factory melts the mold.
i had the og koston 1 in navy/gum and white/navy/yellow, and the lakai koston 1 in brown/gum. the lakai ones weren't nearly as good, my main complaint was the sole came unglued and detached long before they had any substantial wear
@@GoldenEraCollector just the lakai ones sole detached, the es ones were fine. had a pair of dvs that sole came unglued too. so i never bought another pair of either lakai or dvs
Sad that they already likely went to production like that with that sole even knowing how damn well the "1:1" Muska's and Creagers did with new "OG" tooling.
The soles on all 3 Koston reissues are really horrible. It ruins the whole shoe for me. That's a big no. I purchased Creagers instead and they are legit! Same as Muskas.

Yup!!
Back in the late 90's you could write a letter to some companies and ask for stickers and they would send you some for free.
Yea I told Brandon that's the goal. A cheap sticker pack
I grew up in the 90's and I had the original Koston 1 and Koston 2. Originals look better but still excited they brought them back.
I always wanted these as a kid because of seeing Sammy Baptista wearing them in Shortys Fulfill the Dream
waiting on the second colorrway will also let you hear about the sizing and fit before purchasing
$5 shipped is fair to support the channel I’d say.
My exact thoughts! I really appreciate you!
Can you do a better price on a ten pack?

Skated the OG Koston back in 01 and im good with the 197...they skate great

20$ for the no fear sticker lol. Sick video. I never had a pair of koston 1s. I wanted both the 1's and 3's.

100% agree, they could have just done a slightly more solid simple sole even without an air bubble instead of using the Quattro sole
